The West Coast v Sydney Rivalry was one of the best in the competition. No relation to geography, just 3 years of intense games, including back to back grand finals, all separated by less than a goal.
Judd, Cousins, Kerr and Cox - probably the best midfield of all time. Swannies did magnificently to win the first one, then come back and nearly grab the second - what a club.
Cox is the separator there. If you went midfield trio you could also do Voss, Black, Akermanis. All Brownlows. Then Lappin is the next behind them who almost won a Brownlow too (like Kerr). Ruck dept is the differentiator.

The scores between Sydney & West coast over the 2 final series 05 & 06 creepy 05 qualifying final eagles win by 4 ,69 - 65 grand final swans win by 4, 58- 54 then in 06 qualifying final swans win by 1 ,85_ 84 and in the grand final eagles win by 1 ,85_ 84 both sides could have lost or won 2 grand finals one all a fair result given the talent on both sides
Everyone knows this was an amazing granny, but I’d wager those who aren’t Eagles or Swans fans have no idea how terrifying it was to watch this rivalry back then. Going into watching those games, you never felt safe at any point, no better displayed than in this game. A shame the Eagles weren’t able to keep the rivalry going as the decade wore on.
Nah it was obvious to outsiders that it was easily the best and hardest rivalry in those mid '00s years. Really fitting that they won one premiership each it would've been a travesty if either team won both, they were that evenly matched. A couple of other classic battles including a qualifying final were probably even better matches.

To this day, i still wonder how/If they planned to get Benny Cousins up there holding the cup with Judd alone. 20:38. Because obviously Cuz was the spiritual leader, and the former long time captain.
Yeah for sure it was planned, Worsfold is looking right at someone as soon as he raises the cup and gestures for him to come up first, and the rest of the team waits a few seconds before they jump up. All the photos show Judd and Cousins with the cup, I've never even seen a photo of Judd and Worsfold with the cup. The pics really sum up the difference between Judd and Cousins, with Judd his usual cool, calm and collected self, and Cousins going off as we would expect.
