Long Island Sound blackfish fishing - underwater tautog footage

  • This was an absolutely stellar day in the Western Long Island Sound for early November blackfish. Conditions couldn't have been better especially for doing underwater footage in deeper water. I am very thankful this day panned out the way it did, as I got on a good early slack tide bite, learned a lot from the underwater footage, and went home with fish to boot. I do hope there are more accessible days in the Sound for me on my kayak, but if I don't get out anymore this season, I will be happy to end it with this day of fishing. Enjoy and catch ya next time!

      Thanks Scott! Yeah this day was amazing on so many levels, it’s funny because even with all the improvements I’ve tried to make to my underwater camera since, I really haven’t been able to capture the blackfish like this again. Gunna keep trying though! Keep up the great work on your channel too man 🤙

    What pound test line were you using and what size lead did you have on?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the underwater setup, I have it on 30lb braid attached to 40lb leader but then all the terminal tackle including the rig weight (5oz) and hooks are attached with 20lb leader so that in case I get snagged it should break below the camera, (in theory). When I'm actually fishing I use 20lb braid to 30lb leader and 1oz or 1.5oz jig for this depth. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks Bob! I was thinking the same thing, almost like an eel haha I don’t know how they squeeze in like that. Maybe the sound of the camera/crab/weight dropping down the water column gives off a sound or he could sense some commotion from his buddies nearby, but yea I agree it’s really cool to see him/her do that. These fish really are so curious and so much fun to catch, I really hope their numbers continue to strengthen in our area.

Pretty much that whole area has the same geography though, all you have to do is get out near any of the points where there's some marked boulders and just explore around those and you will essentially be fishing the same locations I fish in the Sound.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. I rarely ever mark blackfish on my sonar, for whatever reason (maybe related to their swim bladders or because they're usually hiding in the rocks) they just don't really show up like other fish do. Instead you have to look for what I call "fuzz" but its pretty much just an irregularity that indicates a hard object with growth/activity around it. You'll see the color spread of yellow to red is more spread out. See these two other images for example.
