    Went there with the family a couple years ago after a disney trip. We picked it because of how close it is to LAX and did a half day before an early evening flight home. Ate lunch at Rock N Fish and it was absolutely amazing. One if the best seafood restraunts I've been to.

    Hi Chris! Thank you for this video. I just flew me, my daughter and baby grand daughter to Cali. We went to Manhattan Beach which is our all time fave of all of the beaches. We love how effortless and, walkable it is, and the beach itself is beautiful! Our favorite place to eat is Uncle Bills Pancake House. You are correct about feeling safe. I am very comfortable there, as opposed to Venice Beach. Stay safe and healthy out there! CAB😊

    Grew up in Torrance a few hundred feet from the Redondo border and not far from the Redondo Beach/Hermosa Beach border. Manhattan Beach is just north. I could walk to Manhattan Pier from our house. Our family used to go to the beach in Manhattan Beach as the sand is wider than it is farther south. I still don't live very far away and shop in the area. My brother and his family live close to the pier. Thanks.

    Chris...thanks so much for this video. Love MB! Pre-covid I used to visit LA regularly from Australia, and always visited MB, so was really excited and sad at the same time when I saw you were doing a beach video of Manhattan Beach. It has a great village atmosphere, food and beer, but yeh, a little on the pricey side. A couple of blocks over from your walk is a South Bay institution...Uncle Bill's Pancake House. To die for breakfasts.

    • @brianmccarthy5557
      @brianmccarthy5557 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My family has lived in the area since the 1890's. That's ancient history here. Never heard of Scottish immigrants here before it became part of the US in the 1840's. I strongly doubt the local Gabrielino tribes spent much time directly on the beach area or what used to be a somewhat marshy area behind it as the water supplies are seasonal and there are better places for fishing and getting shellfish. We do get a lot of our water from our local aquifer by using deep wells, but we do a lot of maintenance to avoid salinization from the ocean water seeping in. The original natives couldn't do that. The semi-permanent Indian villages were located along the streams that flowed out of the mountains on our north, the biggest being where downtown LA is today. Descendents of the local tribes are still around intermarried with the local population, but in a metropolitan area as populous as Los Angeles and the surrounding counties they're hard to find among the more than 30 million residents. I have met a few. The area was first throughly explored in the 1770's by the Spaniards who founded Los Angeles and the Franciscan missionaries. The largest local ranches in the area were owned by the Dominguez and Sepulveda families, both of which are still around. I went to school locally with some Dominguez descendents, though you wouldn't know it by looking at them. The main line of the family is now called Watson from a son-in-law in the 1860's. They still own a lot of land, businesses and the local water company. Los Angeles was still a very small town until the railroads reached here in the 1890's. Manhatran and Redondo Beaches were originally developed as terminuses for the local trolley systems. The other impetus of growth came from both the ooening of the Panama Canal, which opened major shipping routes to LA's ports, and the construction of aqueduct systems to transport water hundreds of miles from the massive Sierra Nevada mountains to the north and east and from the Colorado River far to the east beyond the Mojave Desert. The water allowed the entire region to rapidly expand in size. Up until the mid 20th Century there was still a lot of farming and dairy ranching in the area. Most of the housing was built in the 1950's and 1960's. Up through the 1950's there were oil wells along the beach. When I was growing up there were oil wells on almost every block. They mostly disappeared by the early 2000's due the rise in real estate prices but there is still a lot of oil under the area. There even used to be natural seeps of asphalt and tar coming out of the ground. We have long been an area of advanced technology. When I was a kid most of the dads in my neighborhood were working on the,space program. I have been an aerospace engineer much of my career and so have many of my relatives. There's also a major movie studio in Manhatran Beach. The famous rock group The Beach Boys were from the area, as well as many other musicians over the years. It's never been unusual to see Hollywood people in the area and some of our locals have become famous in films. There are a lot of films and commercials shot in the area. The Pacific Ocean usually lives up to it's name of being peaceful but occasionally violent storms can hit the coast. The bay in front of Manhatran Beach looks peaceful but it can be very dangerous for shipping and most ships stay well clear of the coast before swing around to the south and east to enter or exit the Long Beach/LA-San Pedro Harbors complex, one of the largest in the world. LA Airport (LAX) is just to the north. Manhattan Beach and the surrounding beaches were one of the original sources,of surfboarding culture. We are also on a major whale migration route. The California Gray Whales migrate north every spring from their calving grounds in Baja California in large numbers right off the coast. The Blue Whales, the largest animals on earth, are,also reappearing in the area and are regularly seen migrating off the coast. Many local boats do whale watching cruises in season. We also have a fairly large population of local dolphins who can often be seen frolicking by the piers. There are also large numbers of seals in the lical harbors and along the coast as well as brown pelicans. The area is also known for having good skin diving conditions.

    Hi Chris. Great info as always. I imagine Manhattan Beach to be a larger area. But I prefer that it has a small town feel to it. Hard to decide to view the sunset from the pier or from one on the hillside restaurant. Either way the view would be spectacular. Thanks for sharing.

Shellback across from the pizza place, the wildly popular Uncle Bill's restaurant about a block North, and Beckers bakery with big yummy muffins and cookies and more. Everything else was spot on. It's a great place to just relax, walk on the strand or just sit on the sand and enjoy the water.

    I grew up in manhattan beach and fished on the pier allot in the 70's My folks grew up there too.
    my dad and also my grandfather fished on the pier as far back as the late 1940's and the fishing was excellent. fishing was descent in the 70's but now it's all fished out, rarely does anyone ever
    fish there anymore because it;s a waste of time, If you do miraculously catch a fish, you best throw it back because they are all toxic, there are even signs posted on the pier to not eat the fish. the water is not what it used to be, polluted from all the sewage dumped into it, and also toxic runoff from toxic bolgna creek. I guess if you want to eat at horribly over priced bars and restaurants then go for it.
