Played support to the Stones in Rome, 1966.
Whilst leaving the gig there were 2 guitar cases unguarded left near the loadout, very risky, very stealworthy.
Our drummer and I decided to keep an eye on them until their git tech arrived and sat on them to wait.
I unlocked the case I sat on to see what git it was and to my amazement it was Keiths Black 50s Custom........ he was lucky not to loose it.
Move on to 1978, i did the sound on the Small Faces reunion tour. Steve Marriot, during an all night story telling session in my hotel room, told me someone turned up at a SF gig in London carrying a guitar case (not sure when), and asked him if he wanted to buy a 50s Custom LesPaul.
Knowing Keiths had been stolen ( and i seem to remember he said he knew the guitar well because he previously owned it) he gave him £100 and told him to f off.
The next day he phoned Keith to tell him the great news and gave it back to him.
What a great guy Steve was...rip.
Of course, i can't say it was This Custom in the video or how many LP Customs Keith has owned......... an interesting question for Keef.
Incidentally, I swapped a vintage, beaten up Sunburst Telecaster with Steve in 1967 (I think), he loved the worn look of it, before it was in fashion and gave me his Pink 59 LP Special....... both of them are on Small Faces youtube vids.👍🇬🇧

@@stevescontriano860 It's kind of like the Sword in the Stone. The guitar actually won't let you play it unless you have a ciggy in your mouth and heroin rushing through your veins. If you don't the strings will cattle prod you as soon as you touch them.

I'm fairly certain that it's 3 volumes and a master tone up top so you use the volume knobs to choose your pickup/pickups.

Probably why they are marked as such. I picked up on that, right about the time Tyler pointed out it had a master tone where the pickup selector switch goes. Definitely an interesting mod.
Exactly. I had a 3-pup custom and this configuration is called the Mickey Backer Mod. Much like an old ES-5 with p-90s. (Pre-Switchmaster).

Ditto, and knowing the context of their friendship and how important they were to eachother... just makes it the most special guitar in the world.
Certainly there are fewer guitars out there that have been owned by Gram.
I haven't seen any proof of their ownership; just a story from the person who is selling it... Very tricky.

The clean tones of that guitar are astounding. Really amazing, when I heard the clean tones I immediately felt "that almost sounds like a piezo acoustic..." Really cool. But the heavy overdriven tones are totally different.
That guitar throws out some of the most unique tones I have ever heard from an electric guitar. Very interesting.
That thing looks wild, I feel like only Keith would have something like that but it definitely has some awesome tones
Peter Framton played a similar guitar, and Framton was able to make all kind of great sounds with it. I'd love to see footage of Keith Richards playing this guitar
Reminds me of something Ace Frehley would have played? Sounds surprisingly bright for a custom, yet has the ability to get some fat tones when dialed in. Definitely a bit different but still has that old school vibe. Very cool!
Aw man, I really want to know what's going on with the controls. It's not that hard to tap a screwdriver on a pole of each pickup to see what's active. 3 volumes and a master tone would make sense.
The three knobs are volume specific to each pickup, the top knob is pickup blend/master tone type thing. Pretty neat.
Trogly did a video on the Mickey Baker. IIRC, it’s three volumes and a master tone. When you roll a volume pot down all the way, that pickup is silent, but unlike a typical LP, the other pickups remain in the circuit.

@@roebuckmckinney It sounds like this was modified from the stock configuration to me. The "Mastertone" doesn't appear to behave as a tone knob on this one. Further investigation is needed
The sound is awesome; not at ALL what I was expecting, but I love it. The first taste of crunch on there was just... wow.

It was never owned by Keith Richards. Keith's 57 Custom has four knobs and he still owns it. Keith also used a 56 Custom with P90 pickups, which he also still owns.
That is the coolest sounding famous guitar I have ever heard.

I like the idea of three pickups with a volume control for each one, and the tone knob is pretty cool which controls all pickups together. Why does.t Gibson offer this? its a cool idea and seems to work real nice
I have an Epiphone custom Sg (1999) and it has the exact same thing with the pickups
@@kloeyjordan27 that is too cool. Richards in my opinion is a genius in many ways, I think he may have thought this one up. so did you also have the tone button like on this guitar? your sg could be worth something with that set up. did you have three pickups on your sg?

It would be nice, but you know Gibson would want $6000 or something absolutely ridiculous for it
While it’s cool, it seems like a pain to switch sounds on the fly. Probably good for home playing though.
Richards owned three 1957 Les Paul Customs - one 3 Pickups silver hardware (the one he painted with the moon/rainbow like thing), one 3 Pickups gold hardware with Bigsgy, one 2 pickups P90's - and one 1958 gold hardware. But all of them had the standard volume / tone knobs configuration. Also the pickup frames are 100% not original for a Black Beauty. I have never seen Keith Richards with the guitar described in this video, so if he actually owned this one, he must have hidden it very well. I think I would be worth to find out, who actually bought this guitar and why this strange volume / tone configuration. It looks to me as it was Gibson custom made for a specific buyer, as it does not look like after sale changes. Serial number would help!
Probably owned it for a week or so. This auction house does this with other guitars…famous musician “owned” said guitar, but it reality it was something they used for a few weeks and then never touched again.
Totally agree, he played multible black 3 pickup lp customs but never seen him use one like this!.....
I myself would love to see and hear the one with which Keith made the mid 60's hits and album cuts. he got great tones from the LP Custom / Vox Supreme combination.

@@lennycann3334 His tone on Gimme Shelter was awesome too, although that was a Triumph amp, and probably the borrowed Maton guitar. But Keith came up wis some awesome tones. I think "All Sold Out" has examples of his LP Custom.

This is one of my top ten most beautiful guitars ever! I’ve been in love with that look since I first saw Peter Frampton’s (slightly different designs yes). You see that gloss black with gold trim with three humbuckers, it’s almost too beautiful to play, thankfully it sounds so good you need to play🤘🏻
It's crazy to think that the owner is willing to subject that gem to the rough handling of UPS or FedEx by shipping it back and forth. If those are original PAF pickups, then they were designed by Gibson to be clean, quiet pickups. They're relatively low output, un-potted, and probably slightly microphonic, giving them that sweet lively sound. They do feed back, though, and that's why people swapped them out in the '70's for higher gain pickups for rock stage use.
What an interesting LP. Honestly, imagine buying a Gibson Les Paul Custom and just going "Yeah, I'll swap all the electronics out for some weird phasing between pickups stuff - it'll be cool, why not?". To live in the 60s.. lol.

9:30 you totally nail a Jeff Beck Blow by Blow sound....amazing instrument, have never seen that model and been looking at and owned Gibsons many many years.
If only you could send this off to Trogly (Austin) and have him take a look at how everything works on this guitar for sure.

I have a triple humbucker SG. When all 3 are engaged, it's a mellow yet airy sound. I use it on everything basically.

OK - not sure if anyone else has commented on the controls ... I think the "TONE" knob is actually a master tone knob for all three pickups. There is no pickup selector. You choose your pickup or combination of pickups by the volume knobs. They're just volume knobs - you just turn them on to select the pickup. You can get unique combinations by the amount of volume you select. I think.

The different tonal configurations you can do with this guitar are incredible. So many freaking options. He didn't even explore how it sounds with only the bridge, or only the neck. Imagine if you could split each humbucker with a coil tap. Man this thing really is a tone tank

Thanks for just simply being the one to inform me who Mickey Baker even was. Instantly recognized the riff from that song "Love Is Strange", but could never find it because I never knew the name of the song either. Hence, I have another song now I've always wanted to learn.

My guess is, that knob is some sort of series / parallel or coil splitting blend and the pickups are likely not wax potted based on the airy quality and definitive harmonic overtones ringing out. Sounds AMAZING, btw! Keith should have kept it! 😅

From what i remember the the 3 bottom controls are master volumes for all pickups and a master tone is the upper bell knob

That guitar looks fantastic (particularly that binding) and sounds even better.
Id love to have a Les Paul with that tonal range. I like a more acoustic sound with my electrics and I actually use a few guitars with Piezo bridges and when ya blend the acoustic and electric together its bliss.

The knob on the upper bout is a master tone control. The other 3 knobs are separate volume controls for each pickup. I love that guitar.

I met Mickey Baker at Decca Records in London in 1970. All I remember is that he seemed a big man, he also wrote a line of Guitar Tutorial Books. I wonder if he gave Keef the guitar during this visit to London? I was 18 at the time. Baker was a friend of Marcel Stellman - who is only remembered nowadays as the "owner" of the show "Countdown" but one of my heroes for having produced the "Ying Tong Song" by The Goons. British guys of my age will remember this song...

Plot twist: Tyler sent this to Philip McKnight, and Philip added different PRS pick ups and bridge and knobs… And got the whole guitar nice and shiny!
