  • The Amazing Spider-Man came out in 2012 and was the first movie with Andrew Garfield playing the famous web crawler. It was just 5 years after Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and was done so Sony did not lose the rights. It was a different take on the lore and Emma Stone and Dennis Leary joined the cast. Join us for this rewatch of the film and how it ties into the MCU's Spiderman, No Way Home.

    Andrew Garfield was great as Spider-Man. His films got a lot wrong but the suit and his personality as Spider-Man were almost perfect to me. "Is that a real knife? My weakness, it's small knives" makes me laugh every time. My favorite quip from any Spider-Man movie

    As much as I enjoy Tom Holland's version of Spidey, a part of me really wishes that Andrew Garfield was retained as Spider-Man. Say what you will about the stories and general execution of his two entries, but I felt Andrew Garfield reeeeally captured the version of Spider-Man that I personally connect with. The complaint of him being "too cool" always rubbed me the wrong way, because I just took it as a different approach to him being essentially a social outcast, which he's always been. The definition of nerd and "what's cool" has evolved. I liked that he still had an air of confidence to him even before Spider-Man. When people say he was too cool, I question it because It's not like the world was in the palm of his hands; if he fought back, he rarely came out on top. Okay, he skateboards, but does that make him "cool?" I grew up around skateboarders, and believe me, NONE of us were at the height of the social hierarchy lol. He was still awkward and very much a loner. However, I liked that despite his awkwardness, he's still charming. It's not an "aww shucks" type thing; but he feels more like a real person, than the inept version Maguire's always came off as. I think that approach really lent well to when he's behind the mask, joking around and throwing out one-liners. And yes, the icing on the cake was his chemistry with Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. Their romance is still my favorite of the live-action Spidey's. I love the awkward teen romance that Tom Holland's Peter has with Zendaya's MJ; but there's something very heartfelt and genuine about Garfield & Stone's Peter & Gwen.

    • @thedefinitionisthis
      @thedefinitionisthis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Anthonycheesman33 Me neither lol. But then again, had Andrew Garfield been kept, they wouldn't have written him in such a way. Tom Holland's is meant to be roughly 14-15 years old, while Andrew Garfield's was entering college/the work-force.

    • @Anthonycheesman33
      @Anthonycheesman33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thedefinitionisthis yes but the iron man spiderman thing wouldn't be as special with Andrew Garfield.

    • @thedefinitionisthis
      @thedefinitionisthis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Anthonycheesman33 Yeah, but you're assuming they'd write Garfield's version with the same material as Holland's. What the MCU has really leaned into to make their Spidey unique of the 3 live-action versions so far, is that Holland's is this 14-15 year old teenager in middle school. So it makes sense that he'd be more wide-eyed, and in awe of Tony Stark. With Garfield's, I think he still would've been someone in awe of Stark, but not to the same degree of hero-worship that Holland's is, given their age difference. Considering he himself is entering college, and at that point is a more seasoned crimefighter (having experienced 2 significant losses), and just has a level of maturity that Holland's version doesn't, Garfield's version of the character might have been looked at by Stark as more of a peer, in comparison to the "babysitter" role he somewhat plays for Holland's. Someone who But hey, it's all speculative.

When he’s rescuing the little boy in the car he takes off the mask to reassure him and then tells him to put on the mask because it’ll make him strong. This movie is pretty good, I was never a fan of the parent story-line, I remember that coming up in other spider-man things I've consumed and just never feels right. My experience with Spider-man and Peter Parker, back in the late 80s and 90s, the Peter I grew up with was picked on and an outcast, before the powers had no confidence to stand up to someone, these are the experiences I had, back in the day I got picked on for even liking spider-man. I don't mind the Peter in this movie that much, to fit a newer generation, I feel he skates the line of being a bit to "cool". In the 2nd movie is my bigger issue with the to cool Peter, in the 1st movie it still works for me and the interactions with Flash.
    I liked they used the Lizard, I do kinda wish he had a bigger snout like I'm use to but I understand why they went the way they did and its grown on me. Gwen is way better then MJ in any of Raimi movies, like her story-line and her dad. If you did mix the best parts of this movie and the best parts of the first Raimi movie you would get a pretty damn good first Spider-Man movie, though personally Homecoming is my favourite spider-man movie despite its MCU connection I just love watching it and one of the rare movies I've watched 2 times in a row.

    I’d didn’t see these two films until a couple years ago, and Like you guys, I was wondering who the hell “The Gentleman” was supposed to be.
    It turns out, he’s actually a villain introduced in a trilogy of Spider-Man novels which is bizarre.
    The nerd I am, I tracked down and read through all three books in a few months.
    Some spoilers for where these films could have gone:
    - The Gentleman’s name is Gustav Fiers, the brother of Karl Fiers.
    In the comics, Karl was hired to assassinate Peter’s parents on the plane, which he does.
    This is same the character we see in the beginning of Amazing Spider-Man 2 who dies on the plane.
    So Gustav Fiers in the present is getting back at the Parkers for the death of his brother.
    -Peter’s parents are working for the Red Skull(Oscorp in the movie), but are taking information and getting it to Shield.
    It’s mentioned in the 2nd film that Oscorp wanted to sell Richard Parker’s work to a “Foreign Military organization”.
    This would be Hydra, which brings in some fun speculation of how Sony and Marvel could’ve tied together their universes if things worked out earlier.
    -The idea of The Parker’s working for Oscorp comes from the Ultimate comics, in which we learn that Richard Parker and Dr. Connors we’re creating what would be the Symbiote, a bio suit that would fight cancer and repair injuries.
    The Goblin Suit in the 2nd movie implicitly being a prototype version of this idea which would likely have been pursued in the 3rd movie.

    A couple days late to the discussion, but I think you can totally have a Miles story with a Peter that isn't killed off, and they can be closer in age.
    The Spider-Man PS4 game and it's semi sequel spinoff Spider-Man Miles Morales does this, in my opinion, perfectly. Peter in the first game is 23, Miles is 15 going on 16. In Miles' game, he is 17, with Peter being 24 maybe 25. They're relationship is more akin to brothers, with Pete being a little over protective, giving Miles a hand me down suit with knee pads, and calling Miles if he needs to return home from his vacation with MJ, so he can provide back up.
    If they do the Miles route with Holland, then the game route is what I would hope they do. Why do we need to kill our heroes? We know they'll somehow return, so it's kinda cheap haha.

    Here’s how you explain it to people… Ya have a Spider-Man’s movie poster and put Toby McGuires head on it.
    Most people will not be as confused as they will be curious.
    Then in the subsequent film you give a little exposition in the first 10 pages catching everybody up.

    Also there is no Sinister SIx. It has been confirmed by the best scoopers that it will be five. Lizard, Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, and Sandman. Rhino will not be in this movie and it will only be 5 villains. This does make sense when you think about the fact that Sony is developing a Sinister Six film right now.

    I think Peter in this Film especially pre-bite is a person who has no moral compass like the starting scene where he tries helping the kid who is being bullied, i think its him trying to gain the Attention by helping the kid . This Peter is a person who seeks validation. He doesnt have a moral compass he starts realising his problems at the bridge scene. I thought this was a very good way to introduce the character. I can understand the criticism of these films and that people want a lead who is likeable but i think this very good adaptation of the character especially the original lee/ditko run where Peter was a jackass.

    NWH topped this movie and yes, there are things that i wish they had changed (like removing the parent subplot altogether, especially because ut detracted from this film and hugely detracted from ASM2). But prior to NWH, this film has the two most comic-perfect Spidey scenes ever, imo: the scene with the car thief and the cops, and the scene on the bridge when he gives his mask to the kid. And that's not even including the fact that every time Andrew and Emma are on screen together, there is a smile on your face like there hasn't been in a romance since the Golden Age of Hollywood. It feels like a timeless love story as the cherry on top of a delicious comic book sundae. This is by far the most Spider-man-ny film. Peter's intellect, his snark, exploring his relationship with the NYPD and the people of NYC, Garfield's lanky, agile frame, him actually moving and acting like a spider (webbing up Lizard while crawling over him, creating the giant web in the sewer to "trap his prey"), and honestly-from someone who does not enjoy Sally Fields-a far better and more believable Aunt May and Uncle Ben. I am not trying to take anything away from Holland and i really enjoy that performance, but Garfield is the best and most perfectly cast Spidey we will ever see on film.

It’s in the school cafeteria that he notices the fork stuck to his wrist with the webbing, which is the first time he sees the webbing. Also, he caught MJ and her food when she slipped. This is the next day after he was bitten.

    I feel very conflicted about the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies. I like them both, but I also feel that starting over from scratch after Sam Raimi's 3rd one was the wrong move. Sony could've easily continued that universe even without Raimi as the director. Giving up after one poorly received sequel is ridiculous to me. By the way, you were spot on about how Peter Parker was portrayed as a cool guy as opposed to being a little dorky. I knew guys in high school similar to this version of him and they were popular as fuck lol. They were the whole package: the looks, brains, personality, confidence, and they got hot girls without much trouble and we're supposed to believe a guy like this is a loser in this movie? A David Fincher Spider-Man? I don’t know about that. But I really dug this movie. I’ll take it over the first and second Raimi. Simply because Andrew is the better Spider-Man and I do feel like they TASM delivered a movie far more rooted in comics. I def hated the basketball and subway scenes. Those were weird, campy and goofy. The parents subplot slows the movie down and Lizard should have had a better design but I still love this movie.

    The Amazing Spider-Man is my main example when it comes to a movie that I originally really like when it came out, now the more I watch and think it, I grew to dislike it. I don’t think it’s terrible, it has its moments, but I found it to be a soulless, bland, and dull cash grab that’s pretty much almost a repeat of the first Spider-Man movie, but nowhere near as fun and charming.
    I love Andrew Garfield as an actor and it’s not his fault cause I know he loves the character and wanted to honor it and if he really is in No Way Home, it might give him a chance to have better material. Because for both of these movies, the #1 rule for a superhero movie should get right: Make you like the main character. It worked for Tobey Maguire, it worked for Tom Holland, not for Garfield sadly as I found his Peter Parker/Spider-Man to be so unlikable, obnoxious, and whiny. And I get it Spider-Man jokes a lot in the comics and this is more based on the Ultimate comics, but you could make your main character come off as a smart ass and still make him likable and whenever he jokes, which is like for 2 scenes, I didn’t laugh a single time. Also he never really grows or have an arc, as he never learns his lesson.
    I know I’m in the minority on this one, but I never cared for the Peter and Gwen romance like everyone does. There’s just no substance to it and to me they just pad out each scene for so long, it just comes off as Garfield and Stone ad-libbing… badly IMO (It’s even worse in the 2nd one when they keep going back and forth in wanting to be with each other) and it’s so cringey in both of these movies, they’re like that annoying couple that has to remind you that they’re in love every time. Also didn’t help that I don’t find Gwen Stacy in these movies to be that interesting as a character, and hot take: I found Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane to be a better written character, despite people complaining about her being a damsel in distress, because at least the first Raimi movie set up her character up really well. Hell even for the little we got in Far from Home, I got sense of Zendaya’s MJ and her personality and why she likes being around Peter. It’s not that Emma Stone was bad, she was okay (Although she got on my nerves in the sequel), but the character barely has anything to her and we never get why she falls in love with Peter, she’s literally the pitch perfect definition of a bland love interest in a superhero movie. It’s almost like Sony and the writers were like, “We don’t need to write an interesting character, people love Emma Stone, she’s charming, they’ll automatically like her.”
    The Lizard is a poorly developed villain and looks like a giant Goomba from the Super Mario Brothers movie and his plan to turn everybody in New York into lizard people is completely dumb, some subplots or characters disappear, Marc Webb’s direction didn’t really stand out to me and at times felt like a music video (Which make sense because he’s directed some music videos before), the action scenes are pretty dull to watch, I didn’t really feel anything for Uncle Ben’s death because you never feel like it had that much of an impact on Peter and plus it was his fault for going for the gun and the robber wasn’t even threatening him. The whole storyline with his parents is completely unnecessary, the Spider-Man suit looks like shit, it’s poorly edited and any emotional moment just doesn’t feel earned as the writing feels lazy, and we didn’t really need another retelling of the origin story again, we already know, if you ain’t gonna do anything unique with it, then what’s the point? Instead it tries to be a Batman Begins wannabe.
    Not everything in this movie is bad, I like Denis Leary, there are some cool web slinging shot at times, I like the scene on the bridge with him saving the kid from the burning car, James Horner’s score was fine, and it has one of my favorite Stan Lee cameos. But that’s really it honestly. For me, the biggest problem with both of these movies is that they come off as a cynical corporate product that only panders to fans without anything sense of passion and heart in them. I know the Amazing Spider-Man films have their fans and that’s cool and I’m glad some people like them, but I just don’t see it anymore personally.

It just shows that he didn’t learn a single thing and didn’t grow that much as a character.

    @57:28… If after all this bullshit with Tom Holland’s contract and the licensing issues with the character if they screw up such an obvious and enjoyable solution both Marvel and Sony are fucking clueless. It would be a bigger missed opportunity than Batman VS Superman.
    You re-introduce the world to Andrew and Toby (WHILE Disney picks up the tab to do so), confirming that there is very obviously demand to see these characters again. Then in the end bake into the plot that Tom stays in the MCU, Toby & Andrew stay in their perspective universes. Then Disney/MCU has their Spider-Man and Sony not only has A Spider-Man but two. I guarantee you the only hesitation around doing this would be they think it would confuse fans, which is lazy and just untrue. I explained this whole idea to my 11 year old nephew, it took him MOMENTS to comprehend.
    If they somehow fuck this up they’re gonna make Warner Bros/DC look like its run by Cecil B DeMille.
