Good Job! As a plumber for 25 years now I have to say you were pretty thorough. The Allen key is not necessary to loosen off the old disposal. In some cases people might be changing out their sink and keeling the disposal but lost the Allen key, therefore a screwdriver will work just fine...some do not have plugins but are hard wired instead...in that case you will want to shut off your breaker...also, two steps you did not mention, tighten the trap adapter and then test for leaks...otherwise great job!
Damn, you go girl. I always appreciate a woman who can deal with these sorts of things. It's even better when they take the time to show others what it's all about. I'm replacing my Badge next week and this was helpful to me. Thanks.
I watch several videos on how to replace the Badger 5 and yours is the only one that I had seen that mentions to knock out that piece for the dishwasher. Thank you thank you. Let's hear one for the girls !!!!!
Literally couldn’t sleep thinking about my disposal I bought and how my plumber still hasn’t called back to schedule an appointment. Got my butt out of bed and replaced the whole this to include wiring in under an hour.
I only watched this video to figure out how to remove the old disposal. I never considered it to be useful for anything else until I completed installing my new disposal. I was about to put away all the paperwork that came with it but stopped to read through troubleshooting just in case something unexpected occurred. I then read about the dishwasher backing up and remembered this video mentioning the need to remove a plastic covering inside the dishwasher connector. I immediately rushed to disconnect the hose only. I felt inside and confirmed a block. I inserted a short, pole-shaped piece of metal into the hole and hit firmly with a hammer a few times and popped the plastic barrier out. The short piece of metal flew through into the disposal. I was able to reach in, as shown in the video, and collect both. This video is great and a must watch if you have never switched out garbage disposals before.
So, I ran my dishwasher this morning and a little later went to use my disposal, which was stuck. I found the disposal wrench/key and opened the cabinet to get it un-jammed and notice a flood of water. Yep you guessed it. The disposal was leaking (from the bottom). I wasn't sure if this was just some seal inside that could be replaced or what, so I decided to watch a few videos to see what could be done to fix it. As it turns out everyone pretty much said I have to replace it. Doesn't seem to be a difficult job, but I watched a few videos anyway just to confirm and get a sense of what I'm getting into. This video is one of the best. The lady is very through in her explanation and step by step instructions. I thought it was cute that even though she didn't know the names of some of the things she was talking about, she explained them the best she could. She did a great job and I applaud her for making the video. Sarah, thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH. You saved me a plumber's fortune fee. You are very good at explaining every detail. I would have been totally lost without this video.
thanks to this video, I successfully installed a new garbage disposal, having never done anything with plumbing or electrical DIY before! Fantastic! I was so proud of myself when it actually worked! Thank you!
My disposal died this morning, so naturally I went to u-tube and was thankful for your excellent presentation of step by step and that pretty face too...
Hi Sarah! Thanks for the great video. Instruction manuals are good; but videos are so much better. Your step by step process helped me install my Badger 5 garbage disposal with ease. Luckily I was able to reuse the power cord from the old unit. And like you suggested, I did use the original top bracket attached to sink because it was "solid". So you saved me some money!!! Badger 5 (purchased at Lowes for $99) TOTAL SAVINGS $115.47 1. Installation $100 (this is what they charge now) 2. Otay Plumbers Putty 14 oz $2.99 3. Insinkerator Power Cord Kit $12.48 4. Free Labor :-D Thanks again! Mike M.
Hi Sarah, its good to see you taking time and effort to do a task some men would not attempt. I had to imagine myself - years earlier when I did not know the terminology for many parts. You got through just fine and made me smile with some of your phrases. My disposal lasted from 2002 till now. The cast aluminum housing finally corroded through and leaked. Oddly enough, when I used my dishwasher, it would trip the breaker, which was on the same load as my disposal. The moisture in the disposal built up when the waste water from the dishwasher was pumped through the InSinkerator. Now I will put in a new replacement Badger 15SS and see if it fixes the breaker problem as well as the leak under the sink from the old disposal. I wish you were my younger sister...we could do some great teamwork ! Keep smiling, and tell the perv's to take a hike. That talk gets OLD ! JK
Was just about ready to go out and buy a new disposal until I saw your trick to turn the disposal a few times with the key to "unjam" it. Worked like a charm, you saved me $100.00, thanks!
guess your name is sarah. just watched your video last night … gave me confidence in replacing the badger myself. appreciated you being as detailed as you were. had seen one other video previous to yours … think he just wanted to be in front of the camera. my install was a success … thanks again.
I took a look at a few seconds of your video which completely inspired me to just try to replace my own garbage disposal. Thank you so much for this video! I have been shoving money into my handman's pockets and super stressed since he abandoned the request of replacing my disposal for $150-$250. Thank you again!
Thanks Sarah! Super clear instructions, especially the part about removing the plastic stop for the dishwasher connection. Disposal came out in less than 5 minutes. Thanks for being safety conscious also regarding the power.
Didn't even watch this. I took one look at you and figured if you can do it, I can do it. Please don't take that the wrong way. You actually did inspire me to just do it on my own though....so your video still worked
Mine is leaking too, I watched a lot of video of people repairing them, but it seems like a better idea just to replace it. Thank you for the video. Update, wife and I used your video today just to make sure we didn’t miss anything. Great video, keep it up.😀
Thanks Sarah, the end of the video was the most helpful to me. I didnt know you could manually move the unit with an allen key. That did it for me and saved me money, time, aggravation, and a more sore back! You rock!
That hex key you said is made to tighten the mounting ring is actually the tool used to un-jamb the disposal if the disposal locks up during use. There is a hex-hole in the bottom of the disposal which, when that is inserted, will turn the internal rotating plate that has the " grinding blades" on it. The internal 'blades" are not sharp, they are actually just pieces of shaped metal. Yes it can be used for tightening the ring (or two screwdrivers works better and gives an even pressure not the ring when tightening), but it's real use is as stated.
Sarah, you are terrific. I watched several videos before attempting and yours was the most clear, detailed and thoughtful one. Thank you for taking the time to make the video and posting it.
I just went and picked up the Badger 5. I did not know the Badger 5 was in my house when it was brand new. There was a little difference in the drain connection. I did have to do a little adjusting, but it is in and working. Thanks.
I think I forgot to say this a few years ago, but thank you SO much. This video saved my butt from a $750 charge from the landlord! I was at a point where I really didn't have that kind of money and it would have put me in a really bad situation. I easily repaired the disposal myself, and avoided the charge completely!
Thank you for taking the time to post this tutorial...it helped tremendously and I was able to install my garbage disposal in 1 hour and 20 minutes. My dilemma was that some sort of glue or something similar was used on the dishwasher hose that connected to the broken unit, it took me 15-20 minutes to slowly get the hose off. I hope you continue to create how-to videos - it's great to see a fellow female TH-camr create helpful videos.
I've replaced a garbage disposer before but was not aware of using the metal tool to loosen it. About to replace another one, knowing this should make it a lot easier, Thanks, I figured you'd have a few creeps following you. Keeping doing what you do
Thank you so much! My garbage disposal just died and this video helped me install it by myself. The only problem was that connection to dish washer and outlet was in the back side on mine and was inaccessible, so I used your bucket idea and unhinged it first and then was able to unscrew the dish washer pipe and outlet.
Thank you very much for your video! My disposal rusted out from the bottom and finally went out tonight! I'll be making a trip to home Depot in the morning. You made it look very easy!
So Sarah... thank you (almost 2 years later). This video definitely helped me and I finished this task successfully today. Having said that... I am with all the other guys... I did watch this video more than once :) Please take that as a compliment... not a pervy comment.
Thank you for explaining this in girl language. I just installed my replacement Badger 5 with your help and I’m feeling “F Yeah” excited about it. I bought the one with the electrical plug already installed so that part was easier. I also did a little further research and learned about the “Dr. Disposal” installer tool that really made the lifting part easy. The most satisfying part of the whole project was when the guy at the hardware store asked me who was installing it, “I am” has never sounded sweeter.
I'm glad your video came up first, because you did a very nice job of demonstrating. I looked at another video as well to compare insights, and you just about nailed it. I am so happy to see a woman show they have the brains and skill needed to home repair. Thanks.
That's right. You don't need to ask a guy to do it. :) I'm sure you're not the only female to feel this way, unfortunately. I'm glad that this video is inspiring to you. It is probably inspiring, in the same way, to other females. The video was very informative. It had information that the home depot video was missing, like details on removing the bad disposal. lol
Whatever she says, i will do. OMG. I have the same problem but watching this amazing woman is way more important than my garbage disposal problem. I love you!
Hi Sarah Great video! You have a special talent for instructional videos. I am having an issue putting in the Badger 5 XP it is shorter than my last Insinkerator so I have made a few trips to Home Depot and I am dealing with the black right angle fitting wich is too short. Thank you George
I'm glad you emphasize safety first. Unplug that beast! I was also lucky enough to be replacing a Badger 5 with another, identical Badger; that really simplifies the process. However we don't have a outlet underneath the sink; we use the hard wired version of the disposal unit (with a switch on the wall above the countertop). Hard wiring is easy but it isn't nearly as quick and simple as plugging in a new one. Next time I replace this Badger, I'm wiring in a outlet so I never have to fiddle with that again :D
Thanks for the heads up on the dish washer plug. Another video I watched mentioned nothing about that. And thanks for using a Badger disposal which is what I replaced the old one with. Well done.
Thank for this presentation. I wish more lighting is done and an actual wiring is shown. I've replaced twice the food disposer of a different brand. I used a car jack which allowed me to control the height during the attachment.
I will say, that was the best plumber video I have ever seen in my life. I'm a Union Pipefitter, not a Plumber but you are really good at teaching for real. And you are pretty so that makes it better than the other stuff, lol
Thanks for the video. I couldn't figure out how to get my old InSinkErator off and then you showed the most important tool and a light bulb went off. LOL. I completely forgot about that tool from when I installed it 10 years ago... Later watching the video, I said lefty loosey, tighty righty about 2 seconds before you! Great minds think alike!☺
I watch this video two time the first one I didn't pay attention on garbage disposal 😜👈so I have to watch it again thnx for uploading we need more videos plz
Thanks for making this video!! I was missing the part about the Allen wrench because I watched a video where a guy just hammered the metal pieces apart but mine is on too tight for that.
I gotta say, “You are the most adorable plumber that I have ever seen!” Good job with the disposal replacement, and thank you for helping me with mine🌹😋👌
This is the best video I found and I searched many. Thank you for creating this, I think you saved me some frustration and blood pressure rise. The only thing that would be better is if you just did the job for me. Kudos.
Nailed it. The most difficult part was hooking it back to the mount. My electric cord was easy to my surprise. I was able to use my cord from the original disposal. Thank you
I always do this type stuff myself after watching a video on how to do things like this. I have to say you were very complete in your description of how to do it. Thanks so much!
Thank's Sarah. Helpful. I did mine yesterday, there was no way i was paying Lowes 150.00 to do this. BTW I would recommend putting something underneath the old disposal before you start loosening as it could drop down HARD and damage the wood underneath your sink. You looke so dejected after you couldn't get the power cord out :(. It' actually not hard, you just need to squeeze the cord right where it connects.
Thank you so much for your video. I was able to amaze and astonish my family when I removed and installed the new garbage disposal! Your video walked me through each step and I really appreciate your diligence to detail. Again, thank you so much!
Thanks for this video! Gonna do mine tomorrow! As the female handyman of the family its nice to see a detailed video! Mine doesn't have a plug though, i think it's hard wired
Thanks Sarah. I live in Santee, Treviso. I'm about to change my garbage disposal . Its leaking from the bottom. My water is so hard, that its actually rusted out the motor cover housing. allowing water to drip thru the bottom. It's been 10 Years plus, so guess i got my use.
You are totally adorable! Thank you for the video! I am the "plumber" in the house, but have never tackled a garbage disposal. Thank you for posting this, now I can add one more thing I am able to fix!
Good job....but I thought the ribbed one on the electrical wire from the wall was the hot one.I haven't finished installing my badger but I did do the wires on it so I guess I'll switch them. Thank you so much.
Thanks for making the video. I got it off fine. Hard time attaching the new one though. I think I’ll be able to get the new one on ,I just have to make a minor adjustment.
Thanks for making it simple Sarah. I'm not Mr. Plumber so this helps. What doesn't help is that you're so beautiful. lol. Thank goodness you started off with reminding us to unplug the electricity first, because I got temporarily lost when I saw you. I might've fried myself. Thanks again.
Nice job! My only problem with replacing my Badger was to figure out how to remove the wire that was the same as yours from the badger without breaking something. I see you did not try and bought a kit from Lowes. I may have to do the same but I am going to try a little harder and if I break something I know I can get a replacement part.
U are adorable when u explain things but good job on getting it done. That Allen wrench ur going to want to save it's used to rotate the blades when it's jammed.
yeah another thing...my old one had a plug but the new one didn't so i was like wait why the heck doesn't the stupid thing just have a plug...why don't they make them with a plug instead of adding it on...none of the other videos discussed this and that is what i wanted to know...thank you ...you totally went over that...cuz i know i'm not a plumber/electrician but i remember watching my dad install one and i'm like i'm not paying 150. for to have this installed on top of the 99 disposal and the plug plus tax! i'm doing this...thank you for this video...
Thanks for a great step by step explanation. The only downside your video under the sink way dark can't see much. My scary part is the electrical plug in to the disposal wiring it correctly 🤓👍🏻
Lol just found u by chance when I was looking at garbage disposal videos. Yeah been doing DIY videos goin on like 4 years or so now 🤙hope all is well on ur end
On AC circuits (this is an AC circuit) the black wire is the hot wire, the white wire is the neutral wire (sometimes called a return) and the green wire is called the ground wire. Always connect the white wire to a white wire, the black wire to a black wire, and the green wire to another green wire or to some metal object.
i am going to try to clean my garbage disposal worth that tool you showed and i noticed you said only do once appliance is unplugged however the prob is i can't reach that..it is behind my sink cabinet...should i still attempt with the light turned off or maybe the circuit breaker
Sarah, my Badger 5 disposal is leaking from the bottom from 3-4 different places. So like you said it is probably dead... do you think so? I am planning to follow your video and replace it myself.
Wow! If I had watched the first part of this, I would have forgotten to break the plastic piece inside the tube for the dish washer! Thanks so much. Rick Tucson
Easy! Thanks! I did it in maybe an hour. No men were involved!!! I had to climb inside my cupboard to put the damned thing in though. I'd also note that my wires came directly from the wall through a metal wiring tube rather than having an outlet to plug into, so I had to turn the whole line off at the breaker box. Don't forget to do that first if your house has direct wiring!
lol at the white wire being a coolant wire it's not sarah the white wire is the l neutral wire black is the hot and green is the ground i am a electrician so i had to correct that
Wow what a workout..I cut my power cable from the old one and did not remember to label...however your mention of the ribbed side being the white side I had to reconfirm and..IT WORKS!!..Thanks!!!
Great post and nice, thorough explanation. My badger's rusted out and I'll be replacing it soon so this will help me avoid that insane installation fee.
watching you do this job was a bit distracting, but thanks for making me know that I'd have no problem doing it. Paying an installer is def a waste of $ here. Easy peasy, took me all of 20 minutes. I used a car Jack and a piece of wood to hold and guide it instead of busting my arse trying to hold it up and turn the neck with the wrench. Hardest part was lining up the drain pipe correctly.
5:31 Ref removal of disposal body... thanks for mentioning the need to loosen the neck of the disposal from the drain housing by making the quarter turn counterclockwise. That’s why the tool is included for installation. You may have to improvise if you’re only removing a disposal. Many videos fail to mention this and to the uninformed it’s crucial to removing the disposal.
Thanks !, It helped me remove garbage disposal and clean it after we had broken glass in the sink. Just remove it and shake upside down, wash with water, test it that its running & put it back.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I'm totally going to replace my own. Mine hasn't worked for probably 5 years and I forgot about it. I plan to replace this weekend. OH YEAH!!!!
I watched a different video first and changed everything fine...except for the plug. Had to take it apart again and remove the plug so thanks for the solution to the dishwasher not draining.
You are simply awesome and funny!!...I used you for my first time garbage disposer R&R and it was just straight to the point and user friendly!! Keep doing such a great job! THANK YOU....you saved me $150!! :-)

That hex key you said is made to tighten the mounting ring is actually the tool used to un-jamb the disposal if the disposal locks up during use. The ribbed black wire goes to the white wire and the smooth black wire goes to black. Very important and she got it backwards.
Hi there, it is so nice to see a beautiful day doing mechanical work. Congratulations!
+Jake Romero Thank you =)
Thanks for inspiring me (as a female) to feel like I can replace my own garbage disposal! And that I don't need to ask a guy to do it. You rock.

I completely forgot about that tool from when I installed it 10 years ago... Later watching the video, I said lefty loosey, tighty righty about 2 seconds before you! Great minds think alike!☺
+OldCityBob Yay! Im glad it helped =)
I watch this video two time the first one I didn't pay attention on garbage disposal 😜👈so I have to watch it again thnx for uploading we need more videos plz
+Adnan Ali Shah What garbage disposal? Did I miss something?
+Adnan Ali Shah Thank you for watching. Do you have any video suggestions? if so name a couple =)
***** Indeed I am :o)
Adnan Ali Shah u
Me too, I was busy watching s.t. else
Thank you for easy instructions your video is de Best i watched to install Thanks again....
Your welcome! I am happy you got it done 😃
@@WanderFixThrive Thank you Thank You Million times....
Thanks for making this video!! I was missing the part about the Allen wrench because I watched a video where a guy just hammered the metal pieces apart but mine is on too tight for that.
Megan Your Welcome!
Thank you
She did a good job except for the wiring, it's actually the other way around. ask-the-electrician.com/how-to-identify-flat-cord-wires/
Great video, the best, UNPLUG like she stated at the start. Then the 2nd most overlooked part, the dishwasher plug. Great job my lady.
It's been 10 Years plus, so guess i got my use.
thank you for the video. we were trying to figure it out, but once we saw your video it took us 2 seconds to remove the old one.
You are totally adorable! Thank you for the video! I am the "plumber" in the house, but have never tackled a garbage disposal. Thank you for posting this, now I can add one more thing I am able to fix!
The white one is the coolant!
Seriously, very good and thorough video. Thank you
Good job....but I thought the ribbed one on the electrical wire from the wall was the hot one.I haven't finished installing my badger but I did do the wires on it so I guess I'll switch them. Thank you so much.
Thanks for making the video. I got it off fine. Hard time attaching the new one though. I think I’ll be able to get the new one on ,I just have to make a minor adjustment.
I just watched the video to see how adorable you are, and did a great job installing the disposal.
+Michael D Kennedy (Deerpark243) Thank you for watching =)
Thanks for making it simple Sarah. I'm not Mr. Plumber so this helps. What doesn't help is that you're so beautiful. lol. Thank goodness you started off with reminding us to unplug the electricity first, because I got temporarily lost when I saw you. I might've fried myself. Thanks again.
I love this power cord kit...." It came with like a plug "
Just fixed my garbage disposal by myself with your help. God bless you love
Thank you for he video and the Eye Candy. Job completed. It is amazing how a Quarter will totally halt the entire Kitchen Operation.
SM? is it you buddy?
Lol just found u by chance when I was looking at garbage disposal videos. Yeah been doing DIY videos goin on like 4 years or so now 🤙hope all is well on ur end
So I watched another video and they didn't mention the the dishwasher knock out plug. I had a little mess. Thanks for the solve.
I love how you give the instructions step by step. great for the novice.
Sarah, my Badger 5 disposal is leaking from the bottom from 3-4 different places. So like you said it is probably dead... do you think so? I am planning to follow your video and replace it myself.
+Arati Deo Yes it sounds like it is dead. Time to get a new one =)
Kinda mixed of information and fun watching your vid,, you have a unique funny yet informative way to explain . Loved it
Wow! If I had watched the first part of this, I would have forgotten to break the plastic piece inside the tube for the dish washer!
Thanks so much.

Just changed my Badger 5 thanks to you. This video deserves an Oscar :-)
Easy!
Dude,
You are a boss G. I am educated, entertained, and thoroughly impressed. Huge kudos to you. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

You go girl! I just ordered one since mine crapped out. Can't wait to install it, thanks for the tutorial!
High Vibration Your welcome! Glad I can help =)
Also, put a cardboard box under the old disposal when removing so it doesn’t fall when loosened.
Thanks !, It helped me remove garbage disposal and clean it after we had broken glass in the sink. Just remove it and shake upside down, wash with water, test it that its running & put it back.
How long do these Badgers last? I have a leak from the red reset button. Not sure if a washer or gasket can fix it. Six years old. Thanks.
Installed under an hour . The ribbed is hot wire I didn't know and not in included instructions . Good video!
+oscarbird2 Thank you =)
I could watch this all day
That was a very complete step by step process. Thank you
Got it! Just had to really watch what wires matched ribbed versus smooth.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I'm totally going to replace my own. Mine hasn't worked for probably 5 years and I forgot about it. I plan to replace this weekend. OH YEAH!!!!
I can watch this all day!!!!
Sarah, I did my wiring like you suggested and mine works, but should I switch them because of the comments or is it safe to leave them as is?
