    This was one of the best "how to" videos that I have seen on TH-cam. All of the steps were clearly described and the video shots were close enough to tell what was actually going on at each step.

    Thanks for sharing your experience and uploading the video! Yesterday, I removed and replaced a leaky garbage disposal. The removal was easy; the replacement was more difficult than expected. I had a difficult time mounting the new garbage disposal to the existing mounting bracket. I got so frustrated that I stopped and searched TH-cam and found your video. You made mounting it look so quick and easy so I went back and vowed to get it attached so I wouldn’t have to call an installer. I ended up cutting up my fingers on the sharp edge of the mounting bracket, but I somehow got it mounted. The only things that I did diffidently was I plugged the new trash disposal before mounting it to make sure it worked and I used the included garbage disposal wrench to loosen and tighten it (instead of using a screwdriver). Again, thanks for the video!

    Back in the 70's I was an appliance serviceman for 5 years. I removed several old leaking garbage disposers and replaced them with new ones. The first rule of working on any appliance is to ALWAYS disconnect the electrical power before beginning disassembly of ANY appliance. One particular rule I never broke when working on a disposer was to NEVER run a disposer motor dry with no water running into the grind chamber! WHY? I'll tell you: every disposer has a two piece seal above the top of the motor to prevent water from leaking into the motor and bearings. Running a disposer dry can damage the seal faces (even new ones), ruin the seal and cause water to leak into the motor itself. Should the seal leak, water frequently seizes up the motor bearings (especially the top bearing) and cause the motor to hum but not turn. This usually causes the motor protector to shut the disposer off to protect the motor from electrical overload. IF water drips or runs thru the bottom end bell of the motor, it is a sure sign the motor seal has failed, and the seal (or disposer) needs to be replaced. If you have to hire a contractor or appliance repairman to do the job, the labor cost of replacing the seal may well be more expensive than replacing the entire disposer, as many disposers are less than $200. My disposer just failed (profuse seal leakage) and I intend to buy an identical replacement disposer for $100. Since all the plumbing is the same, it will be faster, easier and cheaper than replacing the leaking seal. Moreover, once a motor seal leaks, there will most likely be bearing and motor damage from internal corrosion.

    • @joshuasmith1215
      @joshuasmith1215 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How does running it dry damage seals?

    • @utubetommy
      @utubetommy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joshuasmith1215 Seals have two separate parts that mate together. One half is a relatively soft carbon ring attached to a rubber boot with a spring inside. The bottom of the boot presses into a well in the bottom of the grind chamber. The other half of the seal is a hard ceramic ring. It usually presses into a small rubber ring which in turn presses into the underside of the grind wheel, which rotates to shred the contents you place in the grind chamber. The two seal faces... the carbon face against the ceramic, are pressed together by the spring in the rubber boot. The mating faces of both the carbon and ceramic are polished to seal perfectly when the new disposer is assembled at the factory. The carbon seal is much softer than the ceramic and when the disposer is turned on, the ceramic face spins against the stationary carbon seal. There is no lubricant on the seal faces... they are dry. So when the disposer is turned on the motor spins at nearly 2,000 RPM's. This generates friction and heat between the seal faces, which can destroy the carbon face of the seal. Running water into the chamber before turning on the disposer helps keep the seal faces cool and acts as a minor lubricant as well. Be sure to turn off the disposer before turning the water off to insure the seal does not run when dry. A good rule to follow is "water on, disposer on, disposer off, water off". Hope that explains why a disposer should never be turned on and run dry.

    • @arkrainflood
      @arkrainflood ปีที่แล้ว

      is the failure of the bearing seal the 90+% reason that disposals leak?

    • @utubetommy
      @utubetommy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arkrainflood Yes, in most cases. The other possibility is the grind chamber itself. Cheaper disposer chambers are made of painted steel (sheet metal). Over time the paint inside the chamber will wear off, exposing the steel to corrosion. Acidy foods as well as hard foods or accidental foreign objects like spoons, knives, and other metal objects (yes, that does happen) will wear or erode the chamber until a pinhole leak begins. Eventually the water will leak into the top of the motor with the same result as with a leaking seal. So those are the two things in the vast majority of disposers that can cause problems in the motor.

    Thanks for the video. I just installed my 3rd in my lifetime. I could not for the life of me get the new one to connect to the old connector, I puttied and put the new one on and was glad I did it, the putty was pretty bad. Connecting the new disposal and wiring was a snap but lordy, taking the rings off and putting the new one on to the connector was a beast and had to take several breaks. Make sure that ring is 100 percent on. I was tightening the screws to the connector and bamb! Flew off like a projectile as the ring got pushed off!! These disposals are heavy so if you have a portable car jack like others have mentioned....use it! I used a pot and paint can to rest mine in between hoists. As a 66 year old lady, found my upper body strength is zilch but I did it!

    Yep. This worked for me. I didn't even need to watch it all the way through, just past the parts that I wasn't sure of. And my new Badger 5 is working. It was actually a few inches shorter than my original, but the hoses and connections were at the same distance from the top, so I was able to use existing drain pipe and did not need to modify. Mine didn't have the connection to the dishwasher, so I may modify that later, but for now, this works. Saved me the time and money of calling a plumber. Also kept the same drain attachments, so was much easier to install. Basically just connected electrical and screwed it back in same way I unscrewed it.

    This is EXACTLY what I needed to see. I turned on my Badger 5 (20+ years old) to hear just the "hummmmm" sound, but no motor rotation. Did the 1) impeller rotation check with the 1/4" allen wrench (didn't fix it), and the 2) red button reset (didn't fix it), and so was on to 3) replacement. I have zero problems with paying a pro for this sort of thing if I'm not sure I'm capable of the repair. OTOH, if I know (I'm admittedly not the handiest, but can do a few things) that the procedure is something I can do, and will not electrocute myself, or cause a Noah style flood, I'll look at vids like this and do it myself. This Badger 5 replacement looks doable for me, and Lowe's has the new Badger 5XL's in stock! Looks like my afternoon is planned out for me...
    Thanks for the great tutorial!

    Thanks for the great vid instructions. Not an easy mount, but made it happen. Used a five gallon bucket prop to get it close. Not sure if you called this out - when connecting the dishwasher hose, make sure the carburetor clamp is on the "teeth" of the insert coupling. Common thought is to push the hose in and clamp it as close to the base as possible. Missing the insert coupling teeth may allow water leakage. Previously, I had a plumber repair my dishwasher line and fixed this up (Drew on my knowledge of outdoor sprinkler poly repair. Crimp clamps also go on the teeth, not against the base. Much higher pressure and sooner or later, sure to blow off if not properly secured).

    Thanks I was able to replace badger 5 with new badger 500 from home depot. Only thing I had to buy again from store was the connector between the dish washer line with the badger inlet. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for the video. I would just add that I'm 98% sure that the Romex Connector IS required by the electrical code. That makes no difference when its a DIY that won't be inspected. Even so, it can help to keep the wire from being chaffed . Generally not a big concern but the home inspector will catch it if you go to sell the house. FWIW I am a retired contractor

      I just bought a house, and the garbage disposal is leaking so I’m replacing it. There was no clamp and the inspector never looked at the garbage disposal closely. I guess I should’ve hired a different inspector! Definitely using a clamp for the replacement.

      It's required, so I'll add the 2% to your 98% and make it 100%.

      @@Danny-jb6pg No, I tweaked it and it worked. I used that curved wrench and reset it.

    Lol you made getting the locking rings lined up look insanely easy. Mine has never been that easy. I'm stuck down on the floor on my back looking up into the cabinet trying to awkwardly hold the disposal with one hand and turn the ring with my other. I've had to walk away from it several times due to frustration.
