I've always been clean and tidy, even as a child. As an organized, and somewhat minimalist adult who suffers anxiety, watching cleaning and decluttering videos calms my spirit. With a woman, we feel cluttered in our minds and emotions if our house is cluttered, it reflects our minds. We want clarity! Straight forward, even lights need to be just right and it feels soooooo good if we come home to a cozy, clean, and welcoming nest. I clean always before I leave home, so when I come home tired and needing comfort, this will be my retreat.

My daughter does a method called the “onion layer” (she always did this we didn’t know until recently it had a name). You start by doing one “obvious” declutter and organization run through. Live with it for a while and revisit it again to see what you feel can go or work better in another area of your home. Wash and repeat…
This worked in a way that she decluttered her laundry room and removed the system she thought would work but it invited more clutter in turn. So, out that piece went from there but into her son’s room where she could better organize his toys and weed out what he no longer played with and made the room easy and manageable for a quick cleanup. A console table she knew that she didn’t want in her bedroom and was a collect all and serve no actual purpose there moved into the laundry room ~ it worked out perfect there. Since this change, her laundry room stays decluttered and looks styled at the same time (first room you see coming through the garage into the home) which gave her peace coming into her home. She did this again yesterday with another area and piece of furniture ~ it looks and feels better. Now, she will make some money by listing her decluttering items in resell Facebook groups she belongs. There are some things she declutters that are better serve being donated to the local charities or outreach groups. While yes she could sell the items, they need these items especially anything baby/child related which makes her soul feel good.
I was originally a plow through girl when it came to decluttering and organizing but I have learned to appreciate her method much more over the last few years and now do it that way.
Both methods work just depends on the situation at the time.

"Decluttering is a journey NOT a destination" is so correct!!! Since I retired 4 years ago, I have been decluttering as time permits. Sometimes it takes several passes on an area because we tend to keep more stuff in the beginning of the "journey" and realize later that we should have decluttered more than we did the first time or even the 2nd time we visited an area. I have realized that our 'decluttering muscles" getting better as time goes along as we realize we really don't need certain things in this season of life. Good video!

O my. Decluttering, I did in 2020. At that time, I was involved with a fella who lived an hour away. My daughter and her husband had decided they were moving to Florida. They did for two years live in Florida. I had divorced in 2010 and asked my mom to come live with me. In the meantime, my whole family moved in. It was a wonderful experience for me for 10 years I had five generations in my house. The house was renovated by my son in law, Gregg. After many life changes, we all did move on. My mom passed in 2018, grandchildren married, my son in law died unexpectedly. My daughter and I declutterred the whole house with help from my wonderful friends. Friends are a blessing. There was a process of loads and loads of stuff that went your way Goodwill and to my friends. Took a year and then I sold my home this March 2024. I no longer have a lot of stuff and not paying out utilities and property taxes. That is a freedom.

I agree with you and I also believe that people watch others declutter because it gives them a sense of accomplishment, even though they did nothing but watch someone else get the job done. I'm certainly not a minimalist, but that doesn't mean that I can't embark/continue on my decluttering journey! My husband and I plan to retire in the next few years, and we've lived in our current home over 20 years. His parents have passed, my parents have passed, and we are ourselves guilty of bringing in too much "stuff" that just doesn't serve a purpose to us anymore. So we are tackling it one room or space or closet or drawer at a time, so that when the time comes we can downsize without going through the emotional drama & upheaval as well as the stress that inherently comes with moving. Thanks for your videos - and keep 'em coming!

I know some of the main decluttering channels like Dana K White, and ClutterBug and Minimal Mom have touched on how to get rid of sentimental items. I’m pretty much not sentimental about anything so I don’t usually get it when people think some little scrap of paper that their friend scribbled a note on in third grade means something to them (true story), but a lot of people suggest taking pictures of the items before you declutter it, or just have a memory box, have a container of a certain size and you keep those sentimental memories in there.

Wow-you summed it all up very nicely!!! You are a wonderful communicator!!! It is very easy to see why you enjoyed being an educator and administrator. My mother was an educator for her entire career. She left the classroom early in her teaching career and became a certified librarian. My mom was a very quiet woman, so she definitely excelled in the library environment and found her true passion. She really enjoyed her work-not many can say this and really mean it, but she could, and did, many times throughout her life!!! Decluttering, for me, has become an obsession and for the rest of my life, it will be an ongoing activity. In my opinion, the easiest way not to become cluttered is to not clutter things up…LOL. From now on, I dare anyone to remove anything from its designated place in our home and not return it where they found it!!! Neatness has never been my forte-but I am certainly going to change my old ways!!!

Aaahhh, finding fulfillment. The desire to clear it all out. I constantly feel the need to let it all go. To capitalize on that thought, I have a monthly appointment with my local consignment shop that is awesome. They make a few dollars and I make a few. In addition, I also donate those items that I feel won’t sell. It’s very satisfying knowing that I don’t have to go through all of the stuff all at once.
My husband and I don’t have children so it becomes our task to manage what we want to keep. Best of luck to one and all. We’ll all get there eventually.

Excellant video. I was greatly impressed by the video where you shared that you have gotten rid of most of your books and now have 13. 13!!!! You also mentioned that you can look at things from your past you and see if they are relevant to you now. This gave me so much food for thought. Two days ago I brought a toy horse to the local antique center. I carefully packed it up in a box, careful to add any bits that had fallen off of it. I received it from a friend when I was a child. She had gotten 2 of them from a wealthy family who we both knew. She passed one to me. They are probably antique, covered in stitched horsehair. bridle, tack and blanket all came with it. My friend and I played with them often and treasured them. As the years went by, the stitching was becoming lax and bits of tail fell out(I saved them). Finally the leather bridle started to break. I realized that I should not own it any more, it was just deteriorating. I know that Dan, at the center, will find a proper home for it. If he's lucky, it might be worth alot of money. I, however, just gave it to him. God Bless him if it's worth alot. I got it for free and pass it on. I loose nothing, and I gain knowing that somebody else will treasure it.
...And now, inspired, I will go through my books again.

You are correct. I started to watch because I had been following channels on decluttering and your video popped up on my TH-cam feed. I continue to watch decluttering and minimalist channels for inspiration. It just motivates me to continue the process. There is no way I will ever be a minimalist but I really do need to get rid of a tremendous amount of stuff. My brother when he died at the age of 59 had an extremely hoarded house. It took my sister and me one year to clean it out and rehab the house for sale. There is no way that I want to do that to my kids. I brought a lot of my brothers things home with me because much of it was new. He was addicted to buying stuff that he didn't need and never used. I was able to sell, give to relatives, or donate all of it. Then my husband passed and my mother went into a nursing home. Again my sister had to clean out her house for sale. Much of that came to me. I have raised three kids and have lived in this house for 53 years. In addition I ran a wholesale packaging supply company for 30 years. I retired from the day to day operation, but was still selling out of the retail store that was still in operation. Covid hit and the business never recovered. As a result I am left with about 2000 square feet of unsold merchandise. I have been selling and donating it but it is a slow process. I really want to get my home back this year and stop having to pay for storage. I set a goal for myself in Jan to get rid of 3000 items. I have passed 2000 items already and have thousands to go. What has helped is that I made a pledge to myself to get rid of 10 items everyday and I made a spread sheet to keep track. They need to either sell, be donated, or trashed. I now make a weekly run to a donation site. I use Goodwill, St. Vincent DePaul, Matthew 25 Ministries, AMVETS, Scrap it Up, or Cincinnati Reuse and Recycle for my donations. I forgot to mention that I am helping a family of a hoarder who was a neighbor. He ran a retail gift shop and was a collector. I am selling things for them on E-bay. They brought some of it to my house as they live out of town. Now my house is filled with their things as well. I give it a set amount of time to sell and if it doesn't it too gets donated. This decluttering has become a full time job.

I watch decluttering videos for the body doubling effect. So I should say I listen more than watch, as I work along on my own projects at home. I procrastinate less, learn new things, and feel the benefits. Thanks for your great content! Diane in Denmark is another TH-camr with super motivational “work along with me” videos that have had a big impact on me.

Tim, I love everything about your channel. This was a very good review of why we declutter. I've been doing this for many years and the reason I continue is the the seasons of my life change and things I was interested in only a week ago are no longer relevant. I need them out of my space and mind.
    Cheers

I think we like to see how other people approach decluttering.
It’s a personal thing why we hold onto certain things.
I cleared my Mums 4 bedroomed house, she filled each bedroom as we left home!
It’s sad to clear peoples lives and things they held dear but don’t suit your home.
Not everything can be kept, but I curated the phots split them up between family.
The church, Mums friends, charity shops took lots.
    Cathartic but exhausting!
You have a nice way of thinking and talking.
    That’s why people stay! 😊

This was a very interesting video for me! I don’t struggle with decluttering or organizing. In fact, I really enjoy decluttering! I’ve downsized 3 times in the past 18 years and with each move I look forward to getting rid of more stuff!😂 I’m now in a 900 square foot condo and I’m loving it! So I’ve often wondered why I enjoy watching decluttering type videos and tv shows. I have never thought of them like ASMR! That makes a whole lot of sense! Thanks for all your great videos!!😊

Don't discount the fact that you have a nice, relaxing speaking voice and easy manner that coupled with the decluttering is a double dose of calm. I am a virgo and have always been organized but I can still get tips from videos and enjoy the insights into why people do things. I have been watching a channel called Peeling Away the Clutter and she is a hoarder who has poor health, depression and ADHD and a horrible mess. What is different is that she is slowly tackling the huge mess herself and you can see the learning process through her eyes . It is inspiring to many that if she can do it anyone can.

Love, Love, Love this video! I jumped into the decluttering stream about 4 years ago and continue to swim in it daily. I love how you explained how captivating it is and why. I started a TH-cam channel myself a few years ago since I felt so strongly about it 😊. Come see me sometime! I’m also on the brink of retirement so I’ve enjoyed your videos on that topic too.

living in clutter is like living in filth and noise...serenity comes from order and cleanliness. But imo, reducing clutter is not enough...it is also about creating beautiful fresh environments if you have the means....decorating and style can also go a long way to improving well being and livability.

I had a health issue and then lost my job at the same time. Forced change where I have to sell my home and 90% of what I own of 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with garage, and garden. I watch them for all the tips and read books on it as it also covers the common psychological hindrances one will go through that hang one up. I have found it very helpful, it is a skill. There have been many tears along the way. I am doing this in 90 days. Agree do it over time, dont wait till something happens and you have to purge which is very stressful. Luv the Swedish Death decluter perspective. Sounds morbid but its very practical. Also on TH-cam. Do look forward to being in my new space with less stuff. I Stayed cuz of you my dear, and your other content. Hugs.

I like decluttering videos that 1. Don’t have chirpy music with lyrics playing in the background and 2. The person decluttering looks at each thing and verbally decides whether to keep or not and why it needs to go: it helps me to decide what I get rid of for many of the same reasons: it never fit right, I really hate the color so I shove it to the back and avoid using or wearing it, my old neighbor who I never liked gave it to me and I don’t want to think about her any more, etc. makes you look at your stuff different and makes it easier to part with.

Nah .... came here for the relaxation!😆
Been indulging (slowly) in Swedish Death Cleaning (as is one of my friends) ..... it’s taking ages! We pinned down our slowness to the fact that she’s not moved for over 35 years and raised three kids in her home; similarly, I’ve lived here for over 30 years and raised one. Mine bought his own space over five years ago, I’ve still got stuff of his in my house! Similarly, her two eldest bought their own spaces a couple of years ago, her youngest is currently still at home, but looking to buy her own house now.
I’ve yet to experience any autonomous, sensory, meridian response from the death cleaning - just overwhelmingly stressful at the moment 😂

As someone who’s pretty minimalist, most of my friends would say it looks like no one lives here, I like watching decluttering videos because it’s motivating but also weirdly I like to see other people stuff. I like to see what they have, a lot of times people have things I don’t even know what they are, especially when it comes to kitchen gadgets, not being a cook. I’m a crafter, so I love watching other crafters decluttering and organizing their stuff. I just like seeing other people stuff, I loved watching your mom decluttering her kitchen. She had so much stuff, and had no problem getting rid of a lot of it. She had a great attitude.
