- Hobbies keep me sane in a very insane world. They are the super power of our peace of mind. Today we'll unpack a little of what that means.
Find me everywhere I am on the Internet here: timchilders.bio.link.
I started this channel in order to document life as it gets lived. It's about where I live, how I live, where I travel, why I travel, and so much more. Eclectic is a good word for the content to be found here. I hope you will come along for the ride!
Affiliate and other monetization links:
Want to buy me a cup of coffee to keep the creative juices flowing? You can on my Ko-Fi account here: ko-fi.com/timchilders
Looking to buy camera gear and accessories for photography or video? Search Adorama, one of the largest in the world, with this affiliate link. If you buy something, I get a few pennies here and there: adorama.rfvk.net/oqB7zE
Wanting to get money back every time you buy gas (along with other purchases are online stores and restaurants)? Upside might be something you'd like to explore. Take a look around at their website at upside.com. Then, when you download the app, use code TIM22542 when you sign up.
Want to get money back when you go grocery shopping? Probably my biggest money saver. That's an app called iBotta. Use my referral code to sign up and start getting money back today! ibotta.onelink.me/iUfE/8cc13c...
Last, would you like to earn money back on nearly everything you purchase? You can probably find what your looking for at one of the stores represented by Rakuten. Choose from getting money back or getting American Express Reward Points. My link is www.rakuten.com/r/TCHILD175?eeid=28187
My hobby is rescuing house plants from the mark down death rack at Lowes and bringing them back to life. I love doing this !
Cool!

What a great idea👍
Bless You!
This is worthy of a TED talk. ❤
There is a thought! Hey Tim, have you read this one?!!!
I’ve done a TED X talk on education. It was a fun experience!
😉
@@TheNewRetiredMe How about sharing the link?

Alone during pandemic I hauled out my sewing machine and made masks. I knew I needed to create and though I had put it down for about 20 years, I picked up quilting again. I feel very fulfilled and love sharing my art with loved ones. Great video, thank you. ☀️

I am a retired teacher and as soon as I retired I ran for our local school board. I love to problem solve and I love to serve. I am so involved with our students, teachers and community and hopefully making a positive impact. It's just a perfect fit for me and I am honored and humbled to be able to do this.
Good thinking! I too immediately turned inward and focused on the gifts and talents I have to offer.
It took almost 2 years, but we restarted our parish outreach ministry feeding the elderly and homeless.
SO FULFILLING! I needed church and church needed my talents.
All this came from growing tomatoes, a hobby that gave me courage to do more 😁
😊😊😊
I cannot believe how much I enjoy your channel. You’re down to earth and practical. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much!

I've done many of the hobbies you shared during my almost 64 years of adventures. At this time in my life, I read the Bible daily (much more than a hobby), love to garden & mow my property, walking, thrift/antique shopping, decorating my home for the different seasons/holidays, feeding/watching the birds that visit, watching many different YT videos & not sure if this is a hobby, but I love to watch the sunset❤
This was a great video!! Many blessings to you & your loved ones🙂

My end of job (I guess that's retirement for me), wasn't the way I expected. It sunk my soul. I was in a real depression and hoping to find a good job again. Well, it didn't happen, ageism is real. Last year I felt my guardian angel tell me, "You know, you have potential". I literally said, "Can you help me"? My angel said yes. Fast forward to today, I'm approaching 1 year of dedicated exercise. I have lost an average of 30 pounds. Everything I do feels different. I look completely different. In January, I completed a personal trainer course and applying for PT jobs. I am walking proof that a person in their late 50's could drastically change. I have before pictures to show. I can imagine a person talking to me about regaining their health back and I would have a before picture to show them of me. It's a dose of reality. Life can change, there is such a thing as magic.

I scrapbook, I quilt, I take tons of pictures, I garden, I love Reading, Cooking, Looking at Historic Homes in my community to name just a few of my Favorite Things

I'm a calligrapher, pyrographer, woodcarver, crocheter, loom knitter, fountain pen collector, and have even played with leather working. I have severe ADHD so I have to always be doing something with my hands. I even have saying that I thought of after being diagnosed with leukemia: "Look at your hands. What will you do with them today?"
The adhd crafting is insane isn't it?!..I switch projects and intrests so often!

I like visiting historical battlefields and cemeteries. I like walking, biking, hiking, cooking and baking. My absolute new favorite is solo car camping.

I have not listened to the complete video, but I will. My hobbies are flower gardening, paper crafting, cleaning-and recording burials in-old cemeteries, and typing newspaper obituaries for Find A Grave memorials.

Quilting is my “superpower” - my creativity and my therapy. I only wish I’d loved it sooner in my life!

This was excellent. I wrote down every suggested hobby. I’ll soon be an empty nester and I’m bracing myself for a quiet house and extra time. This was the push I needed to start thinking about new routines. ❤
Yep...keep busy lest you rust...

😊
I’ve tried so many different hobbies over my lifetime. Now that I am semi retired, in most cases, I find sewing projects to be my primary therapy. But I absolutely love also capturing an image with my camera.

All thought provoking! I made it out of the recliner...to the poang chair!😅 I love hiking, photography, gardening, travel, dogs, painting, reading, learning, cooking. 👍😎🇨🇦

Yes! I’m a life-long knitter and quilter/sewer. Now that I’m retired, I’m never bored -always have something enjoyable to do. I’ve always wished my husband also had a hobby to fill his time & use his energies creatively.
😊
🙂
Listening to this for the second time. I love drawing but I'm no expert, love colours and painting but I'm not an artist. Have no time for hobbies and feel on constant burn out from work...now I get why. I haven't nourished my soul with the things that make me feel positive, I'm never in the "flow" ...Thank you Tim!

Love your videos!!!😃
Good for you! Enjoy those lessons!

Tim, this was SO well done. Over the years, I have experimented with many of the hobbies that you mentioned. I still participate in several of them to this day. I discovered the value of that distraction and creative outlet a long time ago, and the way you scripted this video to include the concept of flow conveyed the ideas very eloquently. Please keep up the good work. Your videos just keep getting better. Once again, well done.
I costume for theater. Mostly high school, since they are so much more appreciative than the "adults" at the community theater... I love those kids, and they *need* love so desperately!

Another valuable episode. Thank you. I’ve started crafting again and my attitude as well as my health issues have improved. Worries have diminished considerably.

Number 37 - my husband, Number 38 - Me! 😂😎
Great video, thank you. I have let my hobbies fall to the side while becoming too caught up with my repetitive day to day life tasks. Hobbies are better self-care than getting a pedicure or buying yourself a treat.
😊😊❤
Great topic, Tim. Reading the comments section, someone said their hobby was "pyrography. I'd never heard the term, so I looked it up and it meant wood burning art using a heated tool.
I had a wood burning set when i was a child. It was great fun and the smell of the burning wood was wonderful.
Thanks for this talk.

😊
My hobbies are crocheting, paper crafts, beading and making journals.
❤❤❤
More Tennis, Reading, Gardening, Knitting,Painting and Drawing, making sourdough bread, pizza, etc….my friends said Retirement was for me. I agreed! How did I work???
😊
😊
I have always been a crafter. Also rock collector and tumbler, digging around old dumps, treasure hunting is a favorite(our yard is great for that). At varias times I sew, crochet, draw, write in my journal, write a poem, read, jewelry making, thrifting(more and more carefully since I am paring down). Right now, my hobby is going through all of my things and getting rid of the "too much". I find that invigorating. Traveling, including day trips. camping, we even had a gold mine for a while and I loved that. Shell hunting. Gosh, so much! Not many group activities, but I have many friends.
❤❤
Without exaggeration, I will say that my hobby helped to keeping me sane during covid since I live alone.
You’re right on all the aspects of hobbies that enrich our lives.
I do art work - specifically pyrography, painting and sculpting. I shared my latest pyrography piece on my channel yesterday.
Woodburning. They used to make kits for kids that taught this skill. It was one of my favorites.
@@LuxuryOption4756 I think they still do! I have a fancier wood burner now. 🙂

I never understood why some people don't have a hobby. For me, I can say I have too many hobbies if anything. Hobbies helped me deal with a 40 year career in a job that was not very satisfying, but I needed to pay the bills. Retired, I now can do my hobbies almost daily. I do charity sewing, spinning yarn, knitting occasionally, crochet and a bit of weaving on a small loom. For me, the difficulty is avoiding adding more hobbies that all require some kind of equipment(and storage space!).
😊
😊
my hobby is watercolor.
it gives me a way to minister to and encourage others
😊
🙂
I have always journaled. I have so many interesting experiences from living overseas for 40 years, I want to write a book. But not as a work thing, just for me, my children , and grand children.

Calligraphy is my true love! ❤

Retired in 2020. Medical field. Now full time potter. 4shops carry my work. Occasional show as I desire
Way to go!

Language learning has been my hobby for half a century and it has greatly enriched my life.

This is a great talk, especially for anyone out there that's bored. I have quite a few hobbies, and I can''t wait to retire in a few months to have more time for them. Reading, gardening, hiking/walking/yoga, to name a few, but my favorite is dog agility. There are a number of dog sports, and they are a fun way for you to bond with your dog, meet other dog loving people, get exercise, and give your dog a job that enhances their physical and mental health. I have a lot of professional accomplishments, but the agility ribbons and titles that my dog and I have earned are some of my proudest ones.
😊😊
Singing, photography, writing, travel, and singing all play a part in my sanity 😉
😊
😊
Needlepoint and reading are my biggest hobbies. I can only call what I do in the garden as dabbling, but enjoy it nonetheless the less.
☺
I struggle with reading, but love gardening, and have picked up some hand sewing and until I broke my foot was doing some walking.
😊❤
☺
Loved this video. I have just subscribed to Skillshare (to learn editing). I’m also trying to learn Spanish. I love gardening/lanscaping. My other weird hobby is refurbishing old lamps & chandeliers (I disassemble them, paint them, re-wire them and give them new life).
Beekeeping

Hi, Tim! I am a distracted person with many interests and you named many of them on screen. I suppose that makes me a hobbyist, but really what I am is a dreamer or thinker. As an introvert, I spend a lot of time in my own head. I like exercise because when I'm doing that I can think about anything I want. I have engaged in many of the pastimes I enjoy because I can do them alone. Yes, I have a few people that I engage with regularly, but when I'm with them, I'm generally doing things they like to do. I do that, because I love them not the activity. All I know is I have this God given life where my purpose is to glorify God and He says I can enjoy this life in any way that will accomplish His purpose for me. Thanks for the thought provoking video. Have a lovely day, Tim!
❤

Tim ,this is one of your best videos. I have a vast amount of interest , thus a lot of hobbies. One of my favorites is photography. I do cycle and cook, smoke meat, detail cars , some painting, puzzling and my wife love to play dominos and skip bo. I like to write from time to time . I enjoy TH-cam ,I have some 250 subscriptions that cover a wade range of subject matter. The other day I went to a car show with a my neighbor. I took my gear and took about 113 pictures. It was the best time I have had in a while. In 2023 ,I had a lot of health issues and even into 2024. So this little outing was medicine for my spirit. In the perilous times we live in ,we all need that time ,that hobby , moment away from this loud world to reconnect with good mental health .
Thank you for sharing this much needed message!
😊
I like how that list reminds me of all of my different hobbies that I cycle through in different seasons. Here I was thinking I was being boring cooking and liking to drink herbal tea and go duh watching birds. There's genealogy, diy etc. 👍🏻
😊😊
I love to camp, hike and backpack... But haven't had the opportunity due to an injury. One day a couple of years ago, my garbage disposal broke and instead of calling a repairman I decided to "TH-cam it" and fix it myself. It changed everything. It gave me the confidence to buy and convert a van. In following THAT dream discovered that I love to build things... And fix things... I'm still working on the van and it's going to be epic. I'm planning on going to a van festival in July to meet other crazy people.
I built a custom shed to house my bikes on one end and my lawn equipment on the other - all by myself (with help from TH-cam). Next? I start pottery classes next week and "turning"classes on the lathe this summer.
Hobbies have brought a sense of adventure back into my life at 62.
😊
😊
I'm with you there. I have so many hobbies and have had them all my life. We have a festival here in Cork Ireland called Lifelong Learning festival and people can go to talks and exhibitions and demonstrations around Cork City. You can get a taste for loads of hobbies that you might take up. It to promote life long learning. Hobbies keep people from talking to the walls and are a great social outlet for people. We have mens sheds and sister sheds here in Ireland and they have so many members. Mental health is so important. You can take up a hobby at any age. I run an art group every week and it's the social aspect that people love, We love the coffee and scone half way through. I have a family history hobby too which is fascinating. I crochet and make blankets for the cancer care group. They give out blankets to people suffering from cancer. Hobbies are king. My new hobby is learning to play the Kalimba. 🥰

Grow bonsai trees

I learned bread making during lockdown and whatever interested me but was too hard to make and we had no time when working full-time. Learning things from scratch the way we were taught when there were no machines around. Adding in regular fitness routines at home and studying natural health remedies.
☺
They really are so important. Plus having a TH-cam channel is a hobby all in itself.
❤😊
Love, love your videos and presentations. I agree with other comments that have already been posted that this should/could be a TED presentation. People I know ask me what I do in retirement and my response is usually, “whatever I want to do.” I enjoy a number of activities that you posted so my day is usually full. That being said, I appreciate the knowledge that I can also have a “lazy” day if I want to. So, stop and smell the roses and be grateful for a new day. There are endless possibilities that surround us all.

Such a great topic! I don’t know how people live without hobbies! I like the variety you had on the screen. Some I never really considered a hobby but I checked off many boxes. The one that really gets me into that ‘flow’ is quilting and all things related to it including the restoration of several quilts passed on to me from my maternal grandmother. I got my 88-yr-old Mom involved so it’s been a great way for us to spend time together and for me to hear family stories and history. Looking forward to more time for this when I retire in 5 weeks! 🎉

I’ve had many hobbies over my lifetime, but I have been unable to spend much time on anything lately due to health issues, so I try to focus on my main passion, which is creating music, but unfortunately it is not always relaxing! It’s tough when you’re really bad at the thing you love most. But if I don’t do it, I get severely depressed. So I’m pushing on, if only for my mental health.

My main hobby is Ham Radio and I've been a ham for more than 50 years with some lulls during life but now that I'm retired, I'm able to give back to younger new hams. I also enjoy photography among a few other things. I've also returned back to mathematics, writing and grammar that after 60+ years fell into ruts of routine and not much expansion. I now appreciate the efforts my teachers made decades ago. Did I really use certain subjects in life from school? Some yes and some no, but too often I fell into ruts of life and career choices with low rewards. Oh, what I'd tell my younger self! But I also choose now not to beat myself up with regrets; that's like digging a grave sooner than it's needed.

Reading, listening to music, scrapbooking, genealogy research, working on adding swimming, walking, and possibly line dancing and pickleball.

Splendid TED talk! Among other hobbies, probably the one I've been in the state of flow the most with is building. The more I learn , the more I realize how little I know. However, it gives a certain satisfaction in building a small building and then completing it by building work tables, shelves and storage inside. Many jobs we do during the day are repetitive and never ending like cleaning or cooking. It is so nice to look at something you have created and it is still there the next day. Also when you learn a skill, even if say the building burns down, you have the skill and knowledge to make something even better and the confidence in yourself to accomplish it. Thank you for sharing!

Tim, this is a great video. I was going to listen while playing my online game. When I realized you were listing hobbies on the screen, I had to actually watch the video! I've had many hobbies over my 70 years on this earth. The one I "flow" the most is genealogy. I can spend 18 hours doing it. My tummy will remind me when it's time to eat. I have a great curiosity for learning new things. I enjoy reading historical non-fiction, houseplants, cooking and baking bread, puzzles, Scrabble, and birdwatching. I recently started a TH-cam channel. It's kicking my butt learning about it, but it keeps me engaged. Thank you for this video. It's one that I will listen to again and perhaps again!
🙂
A Great Video with M-a-n-y "🤔" Idea's and some Never even "heard" of. As for Myself, Being a Senior, have Done "Alot" of Different Kind's of Thing's throughout my Entire Lifetime . . . I Take Each Day as It Come's, then Decide WHAT I want to Do for that particular Day. That's the R-E-A-L "Mystery" & the FUN of LIFE. We Can " Change " Our Mind and Can DO Something Completely Different than we had Intended on Doing. Our Right.

🤗
At a graduation at an Art College someone termed what you called "flow" ARTISTIC AMNESIA. I could relate and loved that phrase.
❤
😊🙂
The activity that puts me in "flow" is bird photography, especially the neotropical Warbler birds. They have beautiful colors and are small birds and never perch long enough to get a good photo. I have to concentrate on watching the bird fly around so that I can get a clear photo that hopefully will show the eyes. It's taken a lot of time and I would say more than 50% of the shots are deleted. I also want to recognize their songs by hearing. Birding gets me outside and walking around in the parks, forest, rivers, and my own backyard. I travel for the purpose of birding in different countries (so far Africa and Australia) and within USA for Warbler migration (happening now). I'm a member in a couple of fb birding groups. I have some great shots but won't post them on social media until I can get copyright. I have many other creative hobbies but for now, photographing birds is my first passion. Thanks for providing the link to Adora!!
❤❤
Your reasons for developing or continuing a hobby are spot on. I have always been a reader. As a teen/young adult I started crochet. Once my kids were older and I had more free time, I learned to knit. A couple months ago I started spinning fiber. I am the introvert whose life barely changed during the pandemic shutdown 😂 My hobbies do indeed get me out of the house with a weekly knitting group and my first spinning guild meeting this weekend. Meeting new people is much less stressful when you have a common interest to talk about!
My hobbies bring me joy. I have the fun of picking out the fiber or yarn, making the project, and having a unique, handmade, finished object. Listening to an audiobook or music while crafting is a bonus.
😊😊

Lately I’m immersing myself in carnivore videos. And I make art out of vintage jewelry. And I raise caterpillars.

❤ me too!
The hobbies I enjoy most are photography and sewing. I get lost in the "flow" sitting at my sewing machine. ❤

Thanks Tim. The responses alone verify the value of hobbies. So glad you took the time to do this. It will help a lot of people who haven't found or pursued theirs yet. When we think about it, I believe as you say so healthy and meaningful.

I love to write poetry, draw, watercolor, take photos, read , play with my six kitties, collect tiny objects like "the world's smallest toys such as worlds smallest monopoly, scrabble, etc and I love to rise my bike and walk. Somewhere in the middle of that I still have to work and pay the bills. Paying bills is not a hobby that I enjoy.... 😂 Great video !!!

Crocheting is my "happy place" and watching TH-cam. It may not be good physically for me since I sit for hours crocheting but it works my brain. lol It is a great stress reliever. I have met many friends thru TH-cam that I look forward to seeing everyday. Our kids both have families and live in different states and are busy with their lives so it gets pretty lonely as we don't get to see or talk to them much. Looking forward to your next video, have a great week! 🙂😘❤

Great message! I am enjoying learning new skills with my current pursuit, which is empowering and fun, and problem solving, as well as accepting imperfection in the outcome. Little time for hobbies with full time job, 20 hr commute, and all the usual chores, but a little time found here and there is treasured, I also read 1-2 books a week on my long commute, which helps decompress from the stress at work.

Very good, Tim! I've never needed any prodding to invest time and energy in my hobbies. My biggest problem is I concentrate much more on my hobbies than I do on my actual job. LOL :)

☺
There you go being an educator making me think again lol
😂
I do everything and I do it pretty badly, painting, crafting, air dry clay, knitting etc BUT we all have that something and for me it was embroidery! I couldn't even sew a straight hem but the moment I started to learn embroidery everyone was shocked that I could do it so well. I still paint my ugly childish daubs, I still make random useless clay stuff and I love every moment of it. For me its just the sheer relaxation, the almost meditation aspect of it. Sit with a book or paint, sew etc and time flies by. Its wonderful and yes there are so many groups both online and in communities for those wishing to join others with the same hobbies.
My husband is wanting to retire early this year and I've firmly told him he needs a hobby, so many people when retiring from full time jobs die too quickly because they have lost purpose, they become less motivated. Hobbies can be invaluable to keep the brain active and stop people from becoming isolated and lonely.
