You need to put a vacuum tester on the power brake booster. The diaphragm could be leaking. Most people never expect it to leak.

The car came out great. On the cold starts, the old rule was pump the gas twice, and foot on the floor for a cold start, and depending on the carb setup, light tap before starting for warm start.
You did a great job cleaning up this car, as I knew you would. Your Grandma should be proud she has such an awesome grandson. I hope we get to see her reaction to your work and her drive it again, that will be really cool.

We called the droopy headliners “Gnat Beaters”
Taylor if no one has already said it, there is a very affordable tool that you can buy on Amazon to help identify vacuum leaks. Tool has a cannister that you put baby oil in, has a small heater in the cannister, heats up and smokes the oil, tool connects to shop air and has an internal regulator set for 1psi output, air pressure pushes smoke through the vacuum system helping to identify leaks, cracked line, leaking gaskets, etc.

Great looking SS! This is the video I was waiting for, so satisfying!!! A good body shop should be able to repair that rust and repaint from the bodyline down, I wouldn't repaint anything you don't have too.
The OCD in me was waiting for you to wash it last episode, I'm content now. This is one favorite body styles in the 80s era cars.
Turned out so good! Didn't even have to use a buffer or abrasive machine. 80s GM clearcoat is extremely thin/sensitive so that is huge.
Should be lacquer if it’s original.

T-Ray! Next time your at the shops, grab some "fallout spray" / "Iron remover". It helps with little specks of rust all over the car, and would probably help clean up that lower door section.
Love how patient this guy is. Those old GM cars can be frustrating.
Best diagnostic tool I’ve ever found is a smoke machine. When I finished the build on my 67 Cougar, I couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t idle and run right. I hooked up a smoke machine I made to a vacuum line and found and sealed all of my vacuum leaks. Car fired right up and ran perfect after that.
I think we all knew she would clean up pretty well. But damn, it looks so amazing. Paint the door and the rear piece above the back bumper along with a paint correction on the whole thing and wow it would look brand new.
Brud. I literally learned how to walk at my Grandad's Chevy dealership, first car was a 84 Monte Carlo. When I turned 16 in 92 these SS models were so hot and I wanted to drive them every chance I got. What I'm trying to say is your car here flips many many of my car switches. You've got a really great piece here and that it's a family car is such a cherry on top. Enjoy!
Looks really good. The carburator has a fast ideal choke. Check that. Also the door has drain holes in the bottom. If they clog you will get that rust on your door. Pull the door panel and reach in there and see if it's rusty or clogged. Good luck. Love this build. I love these cars. G body !!
Came here to say the same thing about the choke. Choke should kick down/off. Honestly that’s what it sounds like to me.
Speaking of the carb... holy hell, HOW?! it shouldn't even function after all these years but alas, here we are lol
@@fast97z24 you’re not lying. If was able to get ahold of something like this for anywhere near a decent price, I’d probably go all original. I mean everything is there already in mostly pretty dang good working order and shape. So after just initially getting it running, redoing to carb would be next mission. I’m not judging what the guy’s plans are with the car or anything but there’s tons of hot rodded monte Carlos out there. How many all original SS’s in that good of shape do you see out their. And it’s only going to get more rare as time goes by.
If the fuel bowl isnt slowing leaking fuel all you need to do to start the Rochester carb is reset the throttle plate. That only requires one full pedal press to reset the choke.
What a transformation, it's amazing the difference the new decals made.
As someone who get old cars started and driving again for a living, I’d highly recommend replacing just about every rubber component on the car. That being: tires, brake lines, fuel and evap lines, coolant hoses, and gaskets and seals as needed. It will make the car more reliable and safer to drive
VGG would tell you to use some SOS steel wool pads to clean up that surface rust on the doors. You will be amazed at how well it works.
There's probably nothing more satisfying than a car wash video going from something that has 22 years of buildup and grime to affresh clean brand-new looking vehicle so satisfying
Now to have grandma drive her old ride, also i will warn you Taylor the trunks on these cars are extremely difficult to track down.
The moment we’ve all been waiting for the cleaning of the SS Monte Carlo. That car is in excellent condition and the fact it’s still in your family makes for a great story.
Now we can all be held in suspense waiting for the engine swap. I would go for a BBC even though a turbo LS would be a nice setup.
The car cleaned up nice now all you need is a set of Center Line Convo Pro rims. I had set of them back in the day on my Corvette and loved that trash can look.

Taylor just take a piece of the vinyl that you cut off and patch the little piece on the right front fender. That is if you didn't crumple it all up into a ball. It will look better patched than missing!

I had a black 87 SS when I was 17. My godfather handed it down to me to learn how to work on cars so we swapped a used craigslist FBO 355 and 700r4 in it. One of the coolest cars I ever had and selling it was one of the biggest regrets of my life. He died a year after I sold it and I never forgave myself. This build brings me back and I hope you put a big block with spray in it like we always wanted to.

Vacuum leaks can be found usually fairly easy just by spraying brake cleaner in random places around the motor. If it revs up, you hit a leaking spot.

My bucket list car is a 71 Monte Carlo. I'm 64 and have come to the conclusion that. That it will never become true. But atleast I have a dream. You are making your Grandma proud of what you are doing. Thank you for saving a beautiful vehicle. Atleast you are living your dream.

Those beauty rings, caps, and graphics REALLY sets this car off! I would rebuild the carb, get it idling correctly, get the rust door bottom fixed, etc. Then that car will be top notch! Congratulations and enjoy it!
That has to be one of the cleanest original monte carlos out there. I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. One of my favorite cars of all time.
I'm absolutely loving this build. Mom had a Monte Carlo, my in-laws met cruising their Monte Carlo's, and my grandma is in hospice right now with all of the memories we have of driving around together in Cadillac Seville. I am so happy you got to do this car justice and bring it back. Can't wait to see where you take this thing. Memories are the true time travelers.
You have to lift the back seat! who knows what treasures are hidden beneath. Could be one of your old Hot Wheels cars!
Interior: In short, extract seats and carpet with wet vac and pressure sprayer filled with water. Use a spray bottle with the shampoo, soft scrub, and suck out with water.
Paint match carpet and re-color. Remove seats, cover surfaces and spray accordingly. These work👍
Man this is bring back so many memories! My first car was a 1979 Monte Carlo when I was 16. It had the same interior as yours but came with a Buick V6 for which I promptly swapped out with a 350 out of an Impala station wagon.

Have a look at replacing any of the rubber fuel lines that remain. Fire is a huge risk with something that has sat this long. That interior is amazing.
This takes me back to 17 year old me cruisin the main strip with my buddy in his M/C ss!! I loved that car and this one is in pretty sweet condition! good job Taylor!

Doing the stickers and talking about cruising then bam! I can't help but think of Cleetus in the stadium truck, dominating the entire race, way out ahead, then crashing fantastically on the final straight. Imma go watch that again just for a laugh. Car looks great. Time to burn off those tires.
My dream car. I worked on my 87 bumper to bumper. You're doing good with yours. Check the timing. Seems like it needs to be factory reset. Also the idle air bleed valve on top of the carb. Definitely get a Haynes book lol. Be careful in reverse. They are sensitive transmission. Don't stomp it in reverse or you'll break it. The car is worth more stock motor. It's up to you if you want to replace the engine but I'd leave it stock.
This has been such an enjoyable series so far for me! My first car was a 1980 Monte Carlo that my dad and I rebuilt the engine in together. I drove it several years through high school and college. It still holds a place in my heart like all "first cars" do for car guys. Keep it up, Taylor!

great way to check for vacuum leaks is to spray brake clean around the different rubber hoses while the engine is running. if you hear the engine idle higher you've got a broken hose or leaky fitting where you're spraying

Those were pretty reliable cars. Much better than the Buick. I didn’t say faster, just more reliable and easy to work on. I owned both, I should know. Great job sharing with us.
I bought an old trans am many years ago , the dash and all the vinyl was still perfect and still playable. The guy only used baby oil and swore by it, it’s the only thing I now use and leaves no residue.
One of my kids sent me a picture of the before and after. I sent him a message back saying that can't be the same car. Good job on getting the car looking great.
You had a really cool grandmother. Mine was too. For example, mine got me signed up to be an NYPD Explorer Scout in the summer of 1999. She also liked to play Zelda games, but when a dungeon 's boss monster showed up, she would hand me the controller since I could beat them a lot faster. She worked three days a week until she was 86, then moved from Douglaston to Stony Brook. She passed in 2008, just shy of turning 93.
FYI, NAPA has a really nice headlight called the NightVision LED sealed beam, it’s a direct replacement that looks completely stock other than the 6000k bright white bulb once it’s turned on. Really the best looking aftermarket LED style headlights available that not a lot of people know about.
Soapy water in a spray bottle before you lay on the vinyl will help you a ton. Push water out the same as the air bubbles. Does wonders!
Dang it! The anticipation of what stage 2 is going to be is driving me crazy. Is it going to be an old school 383 or 406. Is it going to be a ls. Will it get a modern chassis. Do you have plans to fix the rust and have the car completely repainted. I feel like you could make a video just talking about what your plans are going to be. Taylor we need to know. 😂

As a detailer this video was super satisfy. Just needs a good compound and finishing polish once you sort the rust in the door. Keep up the hard work dude love the content
My grandmother used to have a 1984 Monte Carlo SS, and I remember even as a kid loving that car. It was the Maroon with the Orange stripes. However in 1996 she traded it in for a 1996 Monte Carlo. I remember when I was 15 I told her: You better not sell this one. I WANT this car. Drove my Buick and Caviler till the frames rusted out and she let me buy her 1996 off her. Drove that until November 2021 and could tell her frame was going. If I could get the unibody repaired I'd keep the bloody thing, but sadly not possible, my husband knows how much I love my 1996 Monte AKA Bessie and was trying to find someone who cold do unibody frame restoration around us, sadly no luck. I love the Monte Carlo's and utterly detest the fact GM discontinued them to make trash cars that barely live 8-10 years even well maintained. I look foreword though to seeing you take your grandmother for a ride in this and her reaction. Can't wait for the next video on this.
The decals really made it sweet. Love this car and your passion for it, i grew up with these GM bodies, the Cutlass and Monte Carlo's and always liked them, they cruise smooth. Now to fix that back bumper black faded area, that would really set it off...

Living up here in the rust belt with -2 degrees day I couldn't help but shake my head in disgust when you are talking about the sun in winter and the surface rust. It's all good though I am just a little jealous 😂
I love watching you bring this back. My first car was a black 88 ss with t-tops. that my dad sold me for cheap. unfortunately I totaled it after 6 months. My Dad still hasn't forgiven me and I haven't forgiven myself even though it was over 20 years ago lol. Do just about anything to get another one someday. Never see them on road anymore 😕.. One pump to the floor on cold start will close the choke, if it's not working properly the choke can stay partly closed causing high idle. I had a similar problem on my 76 impala and ended up using a zip tie to hold the choke open temporarily until I tossed the QJ in the garbage
Dude, this has been one of my favorite builds so far because I have also been fortune enough to get one of my grandparents vehicles. I haven't been super motivated in fixing it up in a while but this has brought that spark back for me to get it done so thanks for that. I'm super stoked to see what you have in store for the Monte Carlo in the future because its already looking so good!
I was never a fan off these cars until i had a chance to detail one with 26000 kms, it looked so good.

Those cars are cool. I have had a 1980 and a 2007 Monte Carlo. But the doors are long so people can access the back seat and you have to be careful opening doors in garage. My 1st car was a 1969 Barracuda Fastback which I bought in the 80s. Recently I bought a 1967 Barracuda Fastback. The doors are not long on these cars and the concern was not an issue for access to back seat. I am a pick up man and am used to short doors. It is great that you saved that car and are doing more for it than the previous owner.

Take the door panel off and check for rust on the inside of the door, and make sure that the drain holes in the bottom of the door arent stopped up, if they are, water will like to ruin the inside of doors, and that’s not just for the monte, that’s for anyone’s car or truck reading this, cause the water goes down in the door and then out thought the drain holes, I’m sure you know this T-Ray, but anyone else reading this, I hope I could help 🤘🏼🤘🏼
That black piece on the back between the trunk and rear bumper, that trim black by SEM would make that piece look brand new lol
OMG, that oil pressure unit I immediately guessed, and it WAY triggered me. GF's ( now wife) 80-something Trans Am had a non-op oil pressure gauge. Easy, just replace the sending unit. What a good guy I wanted to show. A good plan, until that POS snapped at the threads. I almost threw up. It was a major hassle for my young self.
Hey taylor. i still have my 85 ss that I got when I was 14 years old. It’s a primered roller at the current time and tore up. Was a sharp car back when i first did it up with a vortech 355 and chop stick and a Porsche red paint job ($7 an hour pushing shopping carts and bagging groceries for 3 years😂😂😂) and I drove the car to highschool one time for some addict to slam into it and destroy the whole front end. To get rear ended on the way home that day so call it a double whammy. Tore it all down again around 2006 to start over and lost my dad during the project so a coat of primer went on the twisted body a 383 from my late dads vette and I drag raced it. In 2012 I got a turbo 6.0 ls set up put it in (first in the south jersey area mind you 😊)but life happened again and it ended up getting pulled out. Well 2023 is the year I give it to my 7 year old and we are starting it over again. Seeing you do this gave me inspiration to dig in now. She’s getting a big block and a tkx for sure and I just want to do my pop proud. Weird how I started it with my dad the first time as a kid and now I’m restarting it with my kid as a dad this time. Sorry for the novel I’m sure you won’t even see this lol.
Duuude, that thing came up sweet after some elbow grease. The rust on the bottom of the door maybe from old stone chips caused by rocks flicking up from the front wheel. then all it takes is rain, humidity and time. Awesome stuff mate, cheers.
Taylor! Those electronic carbs are fickle when they set awhile.
Also, make sure the choke is fully open. That will not let the idle come down.
Like the clean up on the Monte Carlo. The motor sounds good.
This my dream car right here. My dad had an 86 and then an 88. Wish I would have been able to have one myself. It was the first car I learned how to drive in though and I did drive the 88 for a couple years. Maybe one day I will have one as well. Currently drive a Chevy Bolt EV though lol.

The monte carlo SS has a special place in my heart my dad being a race car mechanic specifically drag cars iv seen these kind of cars come and go in just about every configuration some clean some dirty some junky and decent looking hot rod or prospec 454 big blocks 383 strokers all kinds of stuff i love this car it is my favorite classic car of all time good you got yours running looks nice hold on to it
One day I was driving my brothers 67 c10 truck, pressed the brakes and nothing.
Rear brake-line let go, and had to resort to dodging cars and even running a light.
Taylor, please verify or even replace all the brake hoses.
