      basically, after 50D canon midrange cameras were divided into 2 categories. the proline including 7D and its successor and consumer line including 60,70, 80 D.
      Nikon did the same thing too with D300 and D500 for pros and then D6000, 6100 and 6200 for consumers.

    I am getting it, plain and simple. I am a stills only shooter and I think the specs are excellent. However, having said that, I can also see it as being my very last DSLR. In a few years time, mirrorless tech will be even more mature and I will be able to take my own sweet time to decide whether to go mirrorless with Canon or jump ship to Sony.

    A good brief overview, Gordon! Thanks.
    If I were still in Canon, my heart would break with all the caveats or cippling to use this camera. Since I am with Sony for about 3-4 years now, I don't have those anxiety anymore. As far as Canon goes, this may be the last DSLR releases. Most likely no more 7D-3 either. Maybe one more xxxxD or SL2 type in the next 6 months just to cover the low end DSLR.
    I had the m6-1 for only 3 months. Got it for U$540 only with kit lens. But was not happy with it. So I sold it. Though the m6-2 will have many improvements, I think, even the upcoming a6200 from Sony will be better overall. But it's just tomorrow and we will know. Well, I think being one of the respected reviewers, you ALREADY KNOW! :)
    So, i hope you have something for us on that! :)

    All of the comments complaining about this 90D DSLR lacking this or that video features don't phase me. If I wanted a video cam, I'd shop for a video cam and not a DSLR... I mean technically, video cameras were all mirrorless before "mirrorless" became a "thing", so it's hilarious some folks want to gripe about this DSLR being only a halfway decent video cam and thus not worth buying. LOL I could complain that most video cams can't take great stills like DSLR's can, but would y'all videographers care? Ya, I didn't think so, and vice versa, because I actualy think this camera will be a really nice upgrade from my 70D and I can keep all my current Canon glass, because when it comes to photography, it has some kick-ass specs over my 70D. So after selling my 70D and keeping all my Canon glass, this is a solid upgrade deal for me.

  • @johnhaynes9910
    @johnhaynes9910 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    It is a seemingly excellent upgrade to the 80D and may well signal that we are not ever getting an upgrade to the 7D MkII but I think the point you are making with regard to a future upgrade to this 90D is one worth making because it must take a few years to develop a new/upgraded model. Given the falling volumes in camera sales which Canon has predicted better than most, the switch must be to higher value camera systems and for Canon that will be the R series with likely the M series holding the lower/middle ground, it will be my DSLRs that get the chop but in a sense, does that matter ? Whilst for dedicated followers of fashion, the latest and greatest is a "must", I am quite sure that my 5DS and 7D MkII plus my EF lens collection will keep me going for a few years yet plus loads of second hand bargins to be had :)

    • @davidmiller4594
      @davidmiller4594 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the 80d is selling for just $709 since last week. I don't see too many people going to 90d. I'd either choose the 80 or go straight to the R series.

    • @krollpeter
      @krollpeter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If Canon wants to hold their customers, they should focus on full frame cameras. For example, a budget full frame EOS 200D to keep the millions of EF lens owners.
      Skip all these APS-C DSLR's.

    • @krollpeter
      @krollpeter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I concur.
      I perceive the 90D changes as rather irrelevant.

    • @krollpeter
      @krollpeter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Malcolm Reynolds
      The EF lenses can be used, but most of them don't really cut it on APS-C cameras. I want full format and that not only in the class above 1500. If I have to invest into a new lens system I'll change the system. It's that easy.

    • @krollpeter
      @krollpeter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Malcolm Reynolds Most of the extra cost for full format DSLR nowadays stems from the extra features such a magnesium casing. A EOS 200D with full format sensor would cost less than USD 100 more.

      But is the uncropped video really 4K? If you pause the video at 5:44 you'll see the menu option for enabling cropped 4K, and it displays this warning: "When using 4K movie cropping, camera temp becomes too high both when shoot. and in standby. Movie rec. may not be possible." If overheating is a problem when shooting 4K cropped, how could the camera shoot 4K UNcropped without melting down? There was talk last week (after the leaks) that the uncropped 4K is really just upscaled from a lower resolution, and this menu warning seems to back that up.

    I'm glad I bought an 80D last year. The headline specs for the 90D imply it might be a better camera for my purposes but costs almost twice as much as the 80D at the moment and I won't be buying one unless prices come down significantly. Yes launch prices are always higher due to supply and demand but the value proposition isn't there. Camera manufacturers seem to have been hiking prices on entry and mid range gear while simultaneously crying about a shrinking market. I always buy towards the end of a product's cycle - the limitations and issues with a model are much better known by then and the price is lower. It might be my next Canon camera...in 2021. In the mean time I look forward to the full review. How deep is the buffer? How long before it fills at 10fps?

    Hey Gordon , I love your style of reviewing cameras. You are very knowledge and effective! I want to upload some really top quality videos made in my home office onto my TH-cam channel. I am going to be sitting on a sofa explaining a new product and at times picking up presentation documents from the coffee table in front of me to show the audience. Ideally the camera should be 6 to 7 feet away from my face. Furniture in the room is modern chrome and glass with a light gray (fabric) sofa and colorful cushions on it. Walls are off white with a painting on the wall behind me situated a little off to the side. My maximum budget for the camera (including lens) is $1500. Since I'm naturally an animated person and will be picking up documents to show from the coffee table quite often I am assuming the camera should have a fast autofocus. I need to project a sophisticated image so I'd like the camera to have true to life colors and high resolution. Would you kindly recommend a good camera for this project? Thanks. Mark

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, glad you enjoy my reviews! You've provided good detail there and there's two brands that will do the autofocus you desire: Sony and Canon. I would suggest a model with a screen that faces forward, although if you are shooting from a tripod, you don't need built-in stabilisation. I use a Sony A6400, which has great quality 1080 and 4k video, great AF and a screen that flips up to face you, but NOT built-in stabilisation so if you film handheld, you will need a lens with OIS. If you want nice blurry effects, you'll need a lens with a small f-number, but that's not too long. I use the Sony e 24mm f1.8, but you could also try the Sigma 16mm f1.4 DC DN or 30mm f1.4 DC DN which will be cheaper. The focal length will depend on your distance and how much you want in the view. Also budget for a good microphone. PS - if you're ordering online, please consider going via my price check links here or on my reviews at cameralabs.com thanks!

It has better stabilization and night time performance and a better menu and bigger lens and higher pixel count than the RX 100VII and A6400. I think it's time we admitted that camera technology has reached a plateau for still images.
    4K video still has some room for growth (since hardly anybody owns a 4K TV large enough to make any difference (or a PC capable of processing the files)).
    If you are taking bad images on a Canon 80D..or 70D... then I'm afraid the 90D won't help you.
    Clearly if you want a new APSC Canon camera then the 90D will offer superb results, but I see absolutely no point in upgrading to it from an 80D (or even a 70D really).
    My recommendation would be the Canon M50. It's an 80D in a tiny and cheap body. Add the Viltrox Speedbooster and you have a full-frame look in a tiny body.... for half the price of a 90D.
    If it's high quality 4K video that interests you then Canon dropped the ball on that a while back.

  • @bigshooter461
    @bigshooter461 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This has been touted as the new "Flagship Crop" from Canon but it does fall short of the 7D mkII on many levels, back to single processor from 2, back to single card slot from 2, smaller buffer in continuous 58 jpegs from 113, fewer focal point at 45 down from 65, weather sealing, loss of 24p in video, and the list goes on. It may be that Canon figures most who would buy this camera aren't aware of all that they would be losing if they didn't already have and make use of these feature on the 7D mkII, but for those who do, calling it an upgrade is a bit disappointing. Great review I think I might still consider it for video but at that point no HD 120p or any 24p at all, again not really what I would call a flagship.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you mean. I don't think Canon are suggesting it is an official upgrade from the 7D II, but since few of us expect a 7D Mark III, it does have to fill some boots - or at least overlap a bit.

    The return of the joystick will be welcome, present on the 20D through to 50D and AWOL since the 60D, likely to coincide with the 7D.
    They seem to have run out of 2 digit numbers, 95D? Whether there will be a DSLR market in 2022 remains to be seen, but I don't think the DSLR is dead, just an option, I can't speak of others bu the EVF lag on the M series is a problem for fast action. I really like the M50, but it's not great for panning action.

  • @TheRealMarxz
    @TheRealMarxz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    actually the joystick was a feature of some of the early xxD models, just looking at the shelf of retired cameras the D30 and D60 didn't come with it, (and I believe the 10D didn't but never owned that one) but the 20D, 30D and 40D came with it... as do I believe did the 50D it was Canon's choice to exclude this feature on the 60D (and the later 70D and 80D) was the primary reason that had me holding off on upgrading (and eventually shifting to full frame 5Div) that's how much I didn't want to go back to a body that didn't have one.

    I have the 80d and I have been waiting to upgrade to the 90d but I don't feel that the improvements are so amazing as to make me upgrade. I like the 10fps instead of the 7fps in the 80d but at 7fps, I have never felt that I needed more than that.... the more fps, the more pictures to review after shooting..... From all the upgrades the one I like the most is the implementation of the Bluetooth antenna to have the camera always connected to my phone. It seems that now it will be possible to transfer RAW files to phones faster and automatically, improving workflow when having to use apps like Lightroom for quick edits on the go. It will be easier to use my phone as a control remote for my camera because it will be easier to connect. Honestly, this is what I like the most... It seems that the shutter speed was upgraded to 1/160000 of a second and I am wondering what possibilities this will open to shoot fast-moving objects. However, I am not sure if this is enough for me to upgrade, and it is sad to me that every time Canon releases a new camera, I have the same underwhelming feeling of the new camera release.

    Thanks for the six reasons to chose Mirrorless over DSLR.
    Definitely, once the RF System is mature (Lenses + Camera), I have the feeling Canon will let go EF, EF-S and EF-M as well.
    With the market shrinking I can't imagine camera companies not deciding to offer less cameras (less mounts / less systems) in the future.
    Probably Canon, Nikon to keep up in the mirrorless world, will just try a least to have they DSLR users move to the new mature mirrorless systems (Promotion, upgrade, Buy back DSLR gears and replace them with new RF/Z System).
    There is a clear rush for RF and Z systems.
    Will do the same thing as well later. I have the 90D and EOS200D.
    RF, Z: Those mounts are big enough to probably squeeze a Medium Format sensor like Sony did with their mirrorless FF E mount.

    Was wondering was you think of the Pentax K-1 Mark II.
