Expert Grill 24-inch Heavy Duty - Review and Test

  • It's time for another Expert Grill review. This time we're tackling the 24-inch heavy duty grill that retails for just under $100. Expert Grill actually offers two grills that they call "heavy duty", so really this one should be "heaviest duty". Or something.
    The goal of this review is to determine whether this grill is a match (or may even exceed) the current champion in budget charcoal grills: the Weber Kettle.

    I have the 32 inch version. I love mine. I’ve had Weber kettles and this expert grill is easier to grill and smoke. Keep it out of the rain and snow and it should last a long while. Cheers!

    I had one for 3-4 yrs and loved it!!! the only reason I got rid of it was the apartment I moved into didn't allow outdoor cooking equipment. Favorite meals on it were smoked pork shoulder, and Chicken fajitas that we marinated in fresh OJ.

      I don't know that I could handle being unable to cook outdoors. Back when I was living in apartments, we essentially disqualified any place that wouldn't allow a grill. I hope you get the chance to cook outside again soon!

      @@ColdWarBarbecue I’m about to say screw it and get one of the travel size charcoal grills. lol we’re looking to upgrade to an actual house in the next year or so after our wedding this April. Hopefully we can find a duplex or something cheap without being in a super ratty neighborhood.

    As far as the expert grills, I only have one, the steel egg shaped smoker. I swear by that after I added some extra gaskets. Smiled everything on that. I want to try this one now. I was on the fence with the Weber premium at 299 bit when I saw this in Walmart yesterday at 96, and saw you video, I think it may work well for me.

    When I want to freak out guests, I'll put on an Air Force firefighter helmet when turning meat....you know, the big silver hood with a thick clear visor completely covers your head! It does really work too! I found out one day😂

    Just picked one up they had non in boxes so they sold me one of the displays for 70 bucks , love this frill so far

    Just picked up mine for $50. Used but still clean. Just cleaned it and right now I'm season it.

      Really, as long as it wasn't rusty and was in good shape, that's a pretty good deal. I have had a pretty good experience with this grill. Good luck!

    I love fajitas and i love cheap grills, so this was the perfect video for me!!! I put bottle openers on all the decks I build, my customer's seem to think its a nice touch!

      Thanks! Yeah, the only real problem with the bottle opener on this is that you kind of have to bend down to use it. Or be really short.

    I have this grill and a Weber kettle. Both serve different functions for me. The box Expert I use for oven type cooks.
    I use my Weber for smoking because of the seal.
    I use the box grill the most. But my Weber always comes in clutch when I need to smoke something.

      For long smokes, I prefer the Weber because I get a longer burn out of the wood. If it's a shorter cook (ribs, etc.) I'd say they're close to equal. I did smoke a prime rib on the Expert Grill over Christmas and it went pretty well.

      I smoke a rib on the box too. Too much of the smoke got out, but it turned out ok. @@ColdWarBarbecue

    Is it true that referring to Freedom Units automatically eliminates all cross contamination risks? Asking for a friend.
    Also, keep the Weber because of reasons.

    This vid of yours has over 10k views...way above your average. You should make good on that promise to do a smoke, but don't forget to include "Expert Grill 24-inch Heavy Duty" in the title. Capitalize on the success of this vid.
    I think you've convinced me to pick one of these up...still on the fence, but nice review.

      Funny enough, all that popularity is a VERY recent thing on this one. I suspect it's because grilling season is starting and it's a very affordable grill. Thanks for the tip! Plan on releasing a smoking video on this very shortly.

    i loved mine and just replaced mine becauze i was a newbie when i got the first one and wasn't cleaning the charcoal shelf well enough and it rusted out

      Yep, it's easy for that to happen. That's probably the one thing that bugs me about this. The charcoal shelf isn't the easiest to clean.

    These can be great grills. Seal up the edges where smoke tends to leak out and it makes for an awesome smoker!

    Great video! I’m gonna have to try that marinade recipe. On the grill itself, I have found that the ash pan is a bit too shallow. Ash always seems to be spilled when cleaning after a big cookout.

      I agree about the ash pan. It needs to be 2-3 times deeper to be useful.

    Have you done a longer cook and what's your experience?

      I have. So, beyond the pork loin we did in another video, I also did a prime rib on this. That was probably a 3.5 to 4 hour cook. And it was pretty cold outside. About the only positive regarding the environment was that it was relatively calm winds. The prime rib turned out perfectly. This thing will do long cooks pretty well.

    LOL. "They're going to grow back". I'm going to get the 32 inch one. But how is this holding up? Would you still recommend it? I'm looking to cook brisket, low and slow, is that going to be a problem? Also steaks and chicken, which this grill looks good for that.

      It's doing great! No issues over time. Regarding a brisket cook, while I've not it on this grill, it shouldn't be a problem. I've smoked a few other longer duration meats on here (pork butts, prime rib) and they turned out great. Just keep in mind that you'll be adding wood/charcoal fairly often.

      I started up my grill, but it never got above 200. Is the temp gauge on the lid a problem? It was cold last night and I didn't use a lot of charcoal. But eventually the lid was so hot I couldn't put my hand on it, still at 200.

    I would question the durability long term compared to a weber. My last weber I got 15 years use out of heavy grilling smoking year round.

      Yeah, it's hard to comment on long term durability. From a build quality perspective, the Weber is superior. I think if you take care of this one, it'll last quite awhile. But as to whether or not this one will be prone to rusting more versus the Weber, time will tell.

      lol, a lot of people think better means better, as far as price, I’ve always bought grills no more than $120, this last one lasted me like five years or more, so I don’t know what people talk about when they say oh it’s only gonna last a little bit, I mean for $100 and it lasting five or more years that’s pretty damn good

      I agree that it's a bit difficult to clean. The bottom "grease tray" isn't all that useful. That said, many grills are difficult to clean beyond the top grates.

      I can't say I've ever heard of that channel. Though if I'm honest, the only two genres I really watch on TH-cam are BBQ and vintage computing. :)

      It is a little more troublesome than I'd like. I've got a small fireplace shovel that fits relatively well inside the front door. However, I notice there's always some areas I can't reach effectively. Depending on how long it's been since the last cook, I will sometimes use a small brush to sweep charcoal/ash into the shovel. Or even a shop vac when doing deep cleanings.

    Why did you not explain how you make tortilla? Just pointing is not giving directions unless you are driving. I saw the tortilla press. I know what it is because I work in the food industry. I know the video was about the grill. You already showed the marinade. Might as well show the rest. All tortillas are not the same. Good job. You was dying to try a new editing technique. LOL

      Hey, fair point. There were two reasons. The first was just somewhat being conscious of time, but the main reason is more to your point: all tortillas are not the same. However, these (I'm sad to say) were just using the store-bought masa, so nothing all that special.

      Had to chuckle at that. You're right, though. The Weber's enamel finish is far superior to the finish on this, both internally and externally. I'd mentioned in the previous Expert Grill review that these have to be meticulously cleaned after use to avoid rusting out. The Weber is more forgiving. Thanks for watching!
