In this Mystery Bits video, we explore the fabled Super Mario 64 1995 Build as well as why some believe that every copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized. This build is apparently dated to July 29th, 1995 (07/29/1995) and is believed by some to have been a beta for testing an experimental AI for Super Mario 64.

I know the whole "Every copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized" thing is fake, but honestly, if there WERE some sort of AI technology that monitored the player, I can see it working like this:
.) It would monitor how many times the player picked up a Wing Cap and/or how much total time the player had spent flying while wearing a Wing Cap. If it vastly exceeded the amount of time spent using other powerups or methods of movement, the game would add a few additional Wing Cap boxes to certain stages, and in those same stages, certain stage geometry would be placed closer together, just enough that they could be flown between using a Wing Cap.
.) It would monitor how much time the player has spent swimming and/or underwater. If it vastly exceeded the amount of time the player spent on land, the game might tack on an extra second or two of time between each reduction of Mario's Power Bar/Air Meter when underwater.
.) It would monitor how much the player has Mario jump compared to how much they make him walk, slide, or other such things. If a player likes to make Mario jump more often than not, the game might ever so slightly increase the distance of Mario's jumps, meaning the player might be able to clear certain "shortcut" jumps that they might not have been able to before.
Basically, it would monitor how the player played the game, and if the player displayed a sort of "preferred" playstyle, the game would slightly alter itself to accommodate it.
This is roughly how the Nemesis System in Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War works.

that would be cool! like if it notices your getting really good at platforming it moves/changes the platforms to make it abit more difficult for you, or if it notices you really like to punch/kick it starts morphing it more into a fighting game, or if it sees you exploiting a glitch it could like detect it and then start making levels around forcing you to use the glitch.

@@nhilz Yeah I definitely think the people making ROM hacks, art, and stories are definitely just being creative. But also, oppositely, a lot of it comes from the fact that this was a formative gaming experience for people of a certain age and... like the collective nightmares thing, what seems spooky at first mostly just comes from the fact a mass number of people consumed the same cultural product and never really took a step back and analyzed that.
Like even Mish admitted to the negative feeling that WDW gives you... I don't think a lot of people have ever just considered that it's kind of a shit level design as compared to the more open and adventurous designs of a lot of the previous worlds.

I remember one of my craziest "memories" though I'm pretty sure it was just a dream, was where the main floor of peaches castle had two extra areas extended to the bottom left and bottom right, as well as a boo level that was not big boos haunt up on a floor above the third floor, as well as ANOTHER boo level that was in a portal similar to HMC outside in a garden area, though this boo level was mainly filled with water much like WDW without being able to change the water level. I even remember dreaming about doing the red coin mission in that level and each coin was in the main underwater section hidden in little alcoves. Again, these were all dreams and not one of these "personalized copies" but the fact that I can so vividly remember these dreams years after having them is really weird to me.

If you consider the different play styles, the different co-ordinates, the order of stars collected and everything, then yes, every Super Mario 64 playthrough is personalised.

Something people always neglect to mention in these videos that might end up confusing younger people is that the Super Mario 64 DS version is /completely/ different
You start out as Yoshi, unlock Mario by fighting a giant goomba, and then unlock luigi and wario later on and you can access them via doors that swap characters out.
Many people may hear that "it's impossible to play as luigi without mods," and remember the DS version specifically and think since it contradicts their experiences they may have played a personalized copy.
Imagine if they had an almost finished version of Mario 64 that was different but was scrapped for some reason and we ended up with the one we have now

You want a crackpot conspiracy theory I just made up on the spot? The N64 is gimped from the original versions back when it was called the ultra 64, it was too expensive to develop the console in large quantities and so they had to make it less powerful, and symbolically dropped ultra from the name because it wasn't "ultra" anymore.
Actually from what I’ve read Mario 64 was designed around an earlier set of specs for the N64 that where significantly less powerful.
Zelda OOT was also originally designed for those specs as well,using a similar hub structure, before the mario 64 development team found the console’s limitations a lot less strict then originally anticipated.

The MIPS Hole has more grounded versions of these anomalies, although it does allow anyone to make a page. I do know that you used it last video, but please check more of it out! Plus, it's more fun checking this stuff out without trying to act like everyone is trying to make it seem real. We just want to make content for this cool stuff. Besides Big Boo's Forest or Child of King Bob-Omb, there's stuff like Floor 2B or Night Light.

My personal theory is that the game isn't personalized but maybe certain copies have a randomizer. I've known some games to include stuff like this like Pajama Sam or Binding of Isaac where it's different every time you load it up
I remember when I had a N64 when I was younger and I was obsessed with Super Mario 64 since that was one of the top games we had. My obsession quickly drifted into my dreams of me playing different types of SM64 stages that didn't exist to me having new "game insert" thing? (I hope you know what it's called, I can't think of what they are called) In my dream I would find these new game insert things with a SM64 looking cover but it was different. Then when I woke up, I swore it was real and I would go looking for the game insert.. This is making me think of a lot of things.
