You can see this in pre-release screenshots even. They just didnt update the distance model for Ricco Harbor for *some reason*. In fact, if you look down to Ricco Harbor from Bianco Hills right where you spawn, it is also a pre-release version.
Exactly. We live in a day and age where such things should be well known, but here we are making creepy pasta's about a Stage Element that the devs simply forgot to remove when finishing the product. And even then, a Mirage...What the hell would be so unsettling to that?
This game came out in 2012, while Mario Maker came out in 2015. I will say iyou have a really good idea, but I'm not sure if it's the correct one... It is possible they were holding out for a few years though...
I think it's more seen as a message the devs want to share like "Look there's Yoshi ! You should look for him in the game !" aka find every stars and u get a reward
Theory - Rosalina's mother is buried under a tree, and where did we see trees? Yep, Tree spirits, how many were there? 3. They were all different sizes, so they must be Rosalina's family, watching over Mario, I mean, he hasn't died from black holes, how though? The tree spirits, in every level but only visible in a specific galaxy
I saw a theory about in some alternate timeline or something where Peach was Rosalina’s mother and died in said timeline (I don’t remember where this theory was, maybe on this channel I forgot)…just saying that Sunshine had Bowser Jr. thinking he was Peach’s son. So like…suppose Bowser actually told the truth, and he had TWO children with Peach, who were Bowser Jr. and Rosalina. This would make Rosalina’s father Bowser, her brother Bowser Jr., and her mother Peach. Saying in Galaxy how the whole universe gets reset or something because of weird mumbo jumbo with stardust and whatever could cause Peach, Bowser, Bowser Jr., and Mario to reset, but not Rosalina since she basically exists outside of time as the mother of the Lumas. This theory doesn’t really explain the whole “buried under a tree” thing, and has tons of other plot holes cause at this point I’m just rambling on about something that would be interesting to think about. So…yeah.

That Earthbound track still hits hard. The E. Gadd theory is great. It's always nice when there's some super villain to secretly overshadow the the main villains.
Fun fact: In the German dub of Luigi's Mansion 2 (And I think it's also in Luigi's Mansion 1), E. Gadd is called "I. Gidd". I certainly don't know why they changed his name in the dub.
Fighting inside the eel wouldn't have been THAT off the wall for a Mario game. Yoshi's Island had a boss fight that took place in the stomach of a frog (along with Yoshi looking shocked/horrified after he "passes through" and exits the frog).

Bits never mentioned the fact that the eel is a creepy conjoined male/female twin of sorts that share one mouth and one body! when I played this years ago I was like wuuuut? is it one eel or 2?
At 11:22 : I have actually seen this sprite before, but not in a Mario game. Toby Fox used it in the True Lab section of Undertale, with Endogeny: you turn on the fan in the room, a bunch of white particles combine, turn into THAT SPRITE EXACTLY, and then the amalgamate charges at you. Hearing that it's originally from Mario is huge news, actually.
14:53 it could either be a Yoshi face or a Bowser Jr face. Bowser Jr. is also a mystery in itself. I mean who’s his real mother? Where did he come from?
"Maybe at one point you were supposed to go onside the eel and attack it from the inside out, but that seems a bit too gruesome for a Mario game." *Stares in Yoshi's Island*
I always assumed that you were actually entering the paintings in Mario 64, not being warped to real places. So there were only the things and creatures that the artist wanted there, not necessarily a real, functioning land.
And I'm fairly positive there's aToad that will inform you of Bowser's scheme; like using the power of the stars to make the paintings real and his troops are dwelling within them.
HellValleySkyTree - The overall concept of Shiverburn Galaxy was based on Hell Valley, which is a snowy hot spring in Japan. Most of the assets in Shiverburn Galaxy also have the name "HellValley" in them. The spirits themselves are more of an Easter Egg, based on the tree spirits kodoma. Ricco Harbor Island Pipe - TH-camr SwankyBox covered this in a video, but basically it's very likely this pipe is a leftover asset meant to be used for underground passages. When that was changed to manhole covers, this pipe got forgotten about. Should you break the boundaries of the level and get to the pipe, it doesn't lead anywhere. E. Gadd - While I don't doubt that E. Gadd enjoys chaos, he gave Bowser Jr. the paintbrush while he was disguised as Mario, which you see in the opening cutscene. SMB2 Face - This file is specifically found in desert tilesets. While there's no hard confirmation, I think it was used as a place holder for Pokey (who shares a similar expression) until the proper assets were made. As for why it kept getting carried over, sometimes devs just don't delete anything as it may end up causing a problem or they forget. SM64 Face - Obviously a portrait of Yoshi lol
Yeah, Bowser Jr. doesn’t say that he bought the paintbrush, only that it was given to him. I imagine E. Gadd thought he was Mario and wanted him to test out his new invention. He also isn’t making anyone “buy the solution” to a problem he created, since Mario receives FLUDD for free in the game. E. Gadd probably sent it to Isle Delfino once he realized his mistake.
And really, how do we even know Bowser Jr. is telling the truth? He probably mugged E. Gadd and stole the paintbrush, then claimed he was "given" it because that's what misbehaving little kids tend to do.
Also lets be fr Wario and Waluigi would go their ways of cheating and since it's just a party game E Gadd just allowed them to have the items OR the villains stole them from the heroes that E Gadd made those items for. But ofc there'd be no harm considering it's only a friendly game
1:54 Infinite Bits: Attacking the eel from the inside of his guts would be a bit too gruesome and creepy for a Mario game. Yoshi’s Island Frog Boss: *Am I a joke to you?*
You’re right, but I think it still shows that Nintendo is (or, at least was) not opposed to creating Mario gameplay around going inside something’s guts.
Man I miss back a couple years ago when absolutely nobody thought Mario 64 was creepy. I mean sure there’s the piano, but the game itself has a pretty cheery vibe overall. I wouldn’t call those people “Mario fans”, but rather “creepypasta fans”. Everything is “terrifying” now if you think about it enough. Great video.
As people who are used to modern graphics entered the game through 3D All Stars, they found the graphics overall a bit creepy and unsettling. Coupled with weird ass creepypastas like the wario apparition, it kept growing. Also, its bad luck that mario 64 is kind of the first iceberg thing that comes to mind.
the thing of it is, mario 64 is a massive world with tons of open space, and because of hardware limitations, not very many characters to interact with mario. that leads to a feeling of loneliness and isolation that makes people start coming up with theories.
While I understand what you mean, people these days will do all kind of mental gymnastics to justify why something is "creepy", I won't deny that I ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED how everything was 3 to 2 years ago when Mario 64 was popular again and the boom of the Iceberg videos, it felt so magical and nostalgic, I felt the same joy I felt as a kid back in the late 2000s when I watched tons of videos about creepy stuff like creepy theories of videogames and "real ghosts captured on film" kind of videos
My fan theory about Nabbit: He's not really on the side of Mario, OR on the side of Bowser- just in it for himself, you could say. His color scheme has a good deal of purple. He steals a lot, since he loves money. He's short and fat. Now who else in the Mario series has all of those attributes? WARIO. I think Wario somehow got his hands on a performance-enhancing suit that looks like a rabbit, and uses it to go and steal stuff or help the Mario cast when Bowser's being a menace. Yes, but how did he get his hands on that? Who could've made something like that, and who's had a history of making fancy tech for people, Wario included? DOCTOR E. GADD! I think E. Gadd made an under-the-table deal to make Wario a rabbit suit that would make stealing easier by being basically invisible to enemies. I rest my case.
I loved this show and the toys and the training videos (training videos made for one of the best birthday sleepovers of my life too with me and six friends shooting at badass armies of animated Sauron Sky Sentries). Really sucked how it all imploded. Great video btw.
I always thought that the town in Wet Dry World was a kind of reference to the fact that Mario 64 and Zelda 64 were made at the same time. They even were going to make OoT's hubworld to be Ganon's Castle and have it function similarly to Peach's Castle.
It's a nice theory but to my knowledge no. While yes they did develop together but Zelda was originally designed for the 64 DD but when sales numbers came in for the addon it was decided re-develop the game for the 64 cartridge. Also in mid development Miyamoto took a trip to Europe and wanted an open world feel using German style buildings similar to the original Zelda instead of the originally planned hub world like mario 64. The original engine that was used for Mario 64 could not handle an open world concept so they designed a custom engine just for Ocarina of Time which was reused and updated for Majoria's Mask. The hub world element can still be found as the last area before you ascend Ganondorf's castle.
@zomfragger The hub world aspect from Zelda 64 can also been seen in the Forest Temple's boss room with the paintings. However, the change from 64DD to higher storage cartridge was because the disk add-on was continuously delayed (December 1999 ended up being Japanese release), so likely they predicted poor sales/attachment rate in advance. But one dev mentioned Link's animation count grew to the point where the 64DD couldn't stream all the animation data fast enough to run Link properly.
I remember that when I was a little kid I used to love wet dry world a lot it was one of those levels that I would spend a lot of time in I don t know why I used to love it so much
Dude this style of video is always my favourite! I like how you always are innovating on this channel! Can’t wait to see how far this channel goes in the future! 😁
About the Sunken Ship mystery. New Super Mario Bros. U (And Luigi U) has a Sunken Ship level in Sparkling Waters. This is not a ghost house and it still features boos. However, in that game there is even less information as to why the ship crashed or who was in it.
I remember seeing the hellvalley sky trees for the first time. That night, I thought I kept seeing them outside my window. But then again, I was just a kid 👻
14:03 I see the face as a carving of yoshi's face on a plank of wood. However, In the ds remake it looks more like the glow of the star on a wall. I think the ds is what it was supposed to look like but the n64's resolution made it look like a face.
it does look like that. If it wasnt for the color being the same as the wall behind it, I would have thought it looked like a bowser head mounted above the fireplace or something
I am today years old when I discovered people consider Super Mario 64 creepy. The game was the first 3D Mario game on a brand new console. The "emptiness" in the game is just hardware limitations. Compare it with other Mario games, there are hardly enemies to begin with. And no mention at all that Rosalina's father is Luigi?
Regarding what you said at 1:54, attacking an enemy from the inside isn’t too gruesome or creepy for the Mario universe. The concept is utilized quite innocently in Yoshi’s Island with one of the bosses.
what's creepier is the eel appears to be a brother/sister male/female conjoined twin pair of sorts...has 2 sets of eyes (one masculine with thick brows and the other with lashes! But they share a mouth and body???
1:56 We did go inside a stomach in Yoshi's Island. So it's not so unusual. Also as a 3D artist i like to model also the insides especially when it is that simple.
11:06 it kinda looks like a smiling boo but if it was in the original doki doki panic, it was probably meant to be a smiling ghost enemy that they just never implemented. My best guess for XD3R-B8HH-92R2-FL16 is that it was meant to be a single use code for whomever first found it but the code was never activated.
1:13 - That would not have been the first time actually; in Yoshi's island from the snes you get shrink by kamek and then eaten by a frog, you have to beat up it's uvula to get out. 2:10 - Didn't they reappeared in a minigame of Wario Ware get together? That one with the windmill.
Hell Valley Sky Tree's are actually a reference to "Jigokudani" in Japan. Jigoku meaning Hell Dani or Tani menaing Valley Jigokudani is a famous hot spring spot where monkeys go to relax/take hot baths and stuff! The place is also pretty damn cold too, if you do a google image search, you'll most likely see the hot spring AND a lot of snow... sounds familiar right? Shiver Burn? a "blend" of fire and ice? :P Now, why are there creepy little fellas are there... well I'm not so sure, but I've heard that when you go near hot spring spot in Jigokudani, you can look up the mountain and spot some monkeys looking at you... again, not super sure on this one, but sounds possible enough? Anyway that's about it really. A very specific reference from Nintendo that turned a bit creepy probably because of how they don't really see words like "hell" as creepy or anything like that. Take Sonic 2's deleted level "Genocide City"... they used Genocide 'cause sounded cool, so maybe it's the same case here?
I know I've seen that face in mario 64s ending before, but best I can think of is the baby yoshis appearance from new super mario brothers games, all the facial features line up perfectly.
The smiley face I would say was a placeholder texture or a beta enemy. I guess the mystery surrounding it is why it's the icon for The Cutting Room Floor. Also, please make more of these mystery videos.
I couldn't help but laugh at you ending the story of Wet-Dry World by starting up the Lost Woods from Breath of the Wild. The irony of Wet-Dry World being reused assets from Zelda64 is just funny to me.
have you tried inputting the code at 12:22 using just the buttons on the controller? for example: x, then down on the D-pad, right on the d-pad 3 times, etc...?
The 'supposed' creepy face (to me a least) looks like a king, possibly Peach's Dad. The eye is the jewel on the crown, the nostril is the actual eye, with the real mouth underneath and the mouth is just the collar of his clothes. To be fair, I only realised what everyone was talking about after watching the video, so I thought the king was just pulling a creepy smirk😅.
1:58 It's not like there isn’t a precedent; remember, one of the boss fights in Yoshi's Island consists of you attacking the uvula of a frog that swallowed you while dodging stomach acid.
The sunshine island was never a mystery since the devs put the wrong palm island in its location since there is a palm island with a paper leading to the Lilly pad 8 red coins level
Quite the odd video for this month. What gave you the idea to make this video this time of year? You should do the next video a polar opposite theme for the month, but same format. It'd be quite funny to see you serious while talking about koopas dancing or something. Also congrats on almost 200k!
Great video. These are very interesting and mysterious. I enjoyed your content. You should do videos like this more often. Kinda funny you posted this in December. Would be perfect for October but it's cool. I'm not complaining.
I think the smiley face was a old version of the boo. But I think the design/vibe of the game got change right before the Final Cut. And the non-canon boo sprite got changed because the devs and in general everyone had a weird vibe about it.
Hey bits, it was a great video, but I would say the cut back to the board after every one felt a little weird. I think one of the main things with that was the difference in audio quality during gameplay clips, and your corkboard clips. I think maybe if the audio was the same, it would feel like it flows a lot better and be a pretty cool video format! Great job at it keep going!
I have a theory to the identity of the hellvalleyskytree. What if Shiver burn galaxy is the home of the Shroobs, the alien species from the Mario and Luigi games?maybe they are observing, and mistook Mario's presence as an act of war, Kickstarting the events of Partners In Time? Also, I think that Nabbit might be a Ninji in disguise.
Another thing to make mario 64 even creepier is the music. As you go deeper into some levels, the music changes slightly. Before it was a remix of the original underground theme, but once you get to the bottom of the level, the music changes to include strange sounds, almost like ghostly voices, and the underground theme is gone.
11:22 is it potentially supposed to be a cloud? Like in the first super mario bros game, the clouds have similar smiley faces. I know it's not really shaped like a cloud, but it's my best guess
"but that sounds a bit gruesome and creepy for a Mario game" uhhm. I believe SMW2: Yoshi's Island has a word or two to add to this, and that Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time would also want to add to that.
The castle in 64 looks creepy and empty because everyone is "inside the walls" as Toad would say... I guess the remaining Toad are just lucky they were not caught by Bowser...
03. Professor E. Gadd: I can't say about the items from the Mario Party game, but I can say about the Sunshine one. Bowser Jr. is lying at that moment, we learn that an artist asked Dr. E. Gadd to make something to give life to his art (metaphorically) but Dr. E. Gadd misunderstands the request and creates an invention that can turn art into life, that's why that wand can make drowins move and everything else. When the artist finds out that Dr. E. Gadd made something like that, he loses interest, but Bowser Jr. takes interest and steals the wand. Anticipating the events that could happen, Dr. E. Gadd made FLUDD to clean any possible damage that could be made by the wand, that's why Mario finds out FLUDD laying around.
Ever wondered why Mario looks more cartoonish than the New Donkers in Super Mario Odyssey? Watch the video "Why does Mario look more cartoonish than most of the rest of the humans in Super Mario Odyssey?"
"Was it due to just being on primitive hardware?" More likely that they ran out of time on Mario 64 and they had to prioritize what to polish and what to cut. The game only has 15 levels but, according to an interview with Takashi Tezuka during development, "Currently, we have 32 courses, but the final version may have more. Maybe 40 courses. That doesn't include bonus areas, of course." Even WITH that cutting-down, Miyamoto had to ask his bosses to delay the Nintendo 64's release to give them a few more months to finish Mario 64.
In my opinion about that face at 14:25 it kinda looks like Croc from the Cover of the inspirational game Croc: Legend of the Gobbos that inspired Nintendo to make the 3D ultra platformer Super Mario 64 bc yoshi's nose doesn't have those nostrils
I personally think that the third ball was made to add more challenge to the race with koopa the quick The modeled stomach was likely done to add realism and its possible that it is required for it to be modeled like that to see the mouth of the creature.note that it has no obvious places to attack or textures. The sky trees were likely planned for a star The rosalina part is just a story thing the pipe may have come from a time when the sewers were made of pipes. E.gadd might have not known who bowser jr was. Also wario and waluigi are too greedy to give up their gold. wet dry world is nowhere near as bad as hazy maze cave in my opinion but the lower area is much more uncomfortable. The face may have been to test more advanced sprites. notice how close the letters on the code are on a keyboard. it was likely just keyboard smashing. I feel that popple is the most likely person to be nabbit. the face is a mario portrait the smile is his mustache and the eyes are the symbol on his hat

There are 4 but one is too short to be seen tho

Fighting inside the eel wouldn't have been THAT off the wall for a Mario game. Yoshi's Island had a boss fight that took place in the stomach of a frog (along with Yoshi looking shocked/horrified after he "passes through" and exits the frog).
Even worse (maybe more funny) it looks like Yoshi gets pooped out when you beat the boss battle

Dear God, I thought I was the only one that thought the worlds in the paintings were like that
It's definitely that and not some dumb Mario is dead and dreaming nonsense lol. Dumb kids

People probably have creepy theories for Pong. It's what people do.
With the eel what happened to the city there
My fan theory about Nabbit: He's not really on the side of Mario, OR on the side of Bowser- just in it for himself, you could say.
E. Gadd is so smart that he even planned the plot of both Sunshine and Bowser's Fury. Amazing

*prince froggy intensifies*
what's creepier is the eel appears to be a brother/sister male/female conjoined twin pair of sorts...has 2 sets of eyes (one masculine with thick brows and the other with lashes! But they share a mouth and body???
1:56 We did go inside a stomach in Yoshi's Island. So it's not so unusual. Also as a 3D artist i like to model also the insides especially when it is that simple.
The Mario Sunshine pipe island is just when they just never changed it from a pipe to a manhole
Yes the spacing match perfectly with the manhole cover.
What a great video man!
Hell Valley Sky Tree's are actually a reference to "Jigokudani" in Japan.
Jigoku meaning Hell
Dani or Tani menaing Valley
Jigokudani is a famous hot spring spot where monkeys go to relax/take hot baths and stuff!
The place is also pretty damn cold too, if you do a google image search, you'll most likely see the hot spring AND a lot of snow... sounds familiar right? Shiver Burn? a "blend" of fire and ice? :P
Now, why are there creepy little fellas are there... well I'm not so sure, but I've heard that when you go near hot spring spot in Jigokudani, you can look up the mountain and spot some monkeys looking at you... again, not super sure on this one, but sounds possible enough?
Anyway that's about it really. A very specific reference from Nintendo that turned a bit creepy probably because of how they don't really see words like "hell" as creepy or anything like that. Take Sonic 2's deleted level "Genocide City"... they used Genocide 'cause sounded cool, so maybe it's the same case here?
4:30 - My theory is that the sun/moon manholes used to be pipes at some point in dev, and they forgor to correct that in the Ricco Harbor background
i love this mystery type video where we try to solve the creepy unsolved mysteries. i love this, keep up the good work, man!

I know I've seen that face in mario 64s ending before, but best I can think of is the baby yoshis appearance from new super mario brothers games, all the facial features line up perfectly.
14:53 that face in the background is Mario. Like that’s clearly Mario. Details are a bit off but the silhouette is unmistakable
It is? But where’s his nose and mustache? I can kind of see the ears but there’s no line separating his head from his hat either

I think its yoshi look at his nose and eyes

The smiley face I would say was a placeholder texture or a beta enemy. I guess the mystery surrounding it is why it's the icon for The Cutting Room Floor.
Also, please make more of these mystery videos.
Could the code at 12:44 be a coded message that uses different kinds of coded languages or an obscure coded language?
Just ask mat pat
What is the music that plays at 10:08?
The 1995 Wet Dry World ost
The ghost ship in SMW is the only level in SMW where you end the level by touching a ? orb.
Reminiscent of how in SMB3, when you beat Boom-Boom, and have to touch the crystal ball that appears to finish the fortress, or tank levels.
Fun fact: the face at the ending screen in Mario 64 is probably like Bowser's head cut off, forced to look at the cake for eternity
Quite the odd video for this month. What gave you the idea to make this video this time of year? You should do the next video a polar opposite theme for the month, but same format. It'd be quite funny to see you serious while talking about koopas dancing or something. Also congrats on almost 200k!

The end screen face looks like Bowser Jr.
It’d be cool if they were hinting at his existence in the next 3D Mario from that early on!
I think the smiley face thingy is the thing that blows you up
I’m positive it’s a place holder and the smile is off center to communicate what direction it’s facing.
Loved this video I’ve always found a lot of Mario 64 to be very creepy so was awesome to see a video on it
Watching this right before bed to make sure i have nightmares.
Love this new video and the Unsolved Mysteries vibe!
Glad to hear, thank you!
Not sure where I heard this from, but a “description” of Nabbit. “Not a friend or foe, just someone looking over Mario and his friends.”
One of your best videos yet. I loved the more unsettling athmosphere.
Thank you man, glad you enjoyed!
I love what you're wearing all through the video 😂
4:46 It's either the island with the lone Pianta with the lilypad level or how manholes were originally pipes.
9:51 Is the Bob-omb Buddy a joke to you?
The creepy face is the vengeful spirits of all the Yoshi's Mario dropped off cliffs for extra jump distance in Super Mario World
Might be wrong, but if you look at the cover on " The Kite Runner "
The Wet Dry World skybox kinda looks like that
0:32 it’s because they want it to be easy the first time they play the game and they made it a little harder after the first star

Gadd:
I can't say about the items from the Mario Party game, but I can say about the Sunshine one. Bowser Jr. is lying at that moment, we learn that an artist asked Dr.

That doesn't include bonus areas, of course."
Even WITH that cutting-down, Miyamoto had to ask his bosses to delay the Nintendo 64's release to give them a few more months to finish Mario 64.
Fun fact: the mario 64 face is a fucking drawer. the "nose"/"mustache"/whatever is a handle and you can see the rest from there.

I personally think that the third ball was made to add more challenge to the race with koopa the quick
The modeled stomach was likely done to add realism and its possible that it is required for it to be modeled like that to see the mouth of the creature.note that it has no obvious places to attack or textures.
The sky trees were likely planned for a star
The rosalina part is just a story thing
the pipe may have come from a time when the sewers were made of pipes.
E.gadd might have not known who bowser jr was. Also wario and waluigi are too greedy to give up their gold.
