We're reviewing the MSI MPG Sekira 500X PC case, which is one of the company's newest computer case additions to its lineup. MSI -- as will become obvious -- is not a case manufacturer by trade, but a motherboard and video card manufacturer. In this video, we'll benchmark and test MSI's new Sekira 500X gaming PC case, a high-end tower that's built for ATX motherboards (with some "E-ATX" support). The MSI Sekira 500X is a thermally challenged case that follows many of the mistakes from the original Cooler Master H500P. That case was eventually fixed, and we hope that MSI learns from the process and follows Cooler Master's trend to solving the obvious, glaring issues -- like obstructing the fan intake with the fan itself.

I guess most case designers assume that fans PRODUCE air, it's the only "logic" explanation I can come up with l.

It's moments like these that I think "I could work as a Designer for that company!" Then again maybe the reason why it's such bad quality is that the wages they pay the designers is barely anything... I know if I was payed diddly squat I'd probably spot a mistake like that and go "eh, I'm not payed enough to notice."

It's impressive that they managed to make a hot, loud and potentially dusty case. Most manufacturers can only manage one or two of those things. They should win some kind of award for that. One that they didn't pay for.

I would say it should be called the AR780 Award (named such after that Abkoncore case they reviewed), but that had so little airflow that dust wouldn't be a problem, right? In a way, this case was... worse!?
@@gamamew Unsurprisingly, they did, but of course simply being bad at airflow isn’t as bad as actually catching fire as in the case of the NZXT H1

They're supposed to be making the Axe of Perun. You don't need to set your case performance goals very high when you are targeting the capabilities of a ceremonial axe.
I really hope the Case R&D team is totally separate from the Motherboard R&D team

MSI is such an odd brand, on one hand their prices are decently competitive and sometimes their products are quite good. But they just consistently drop the ball over and over, like unless you specifically do your research to determine if one of their products is worth it it seems like you're better off steering clear of the brand
Absolutely. My MSI motherboard is awesome, their graphics card is garbage. One of my MSI laptops died very early, my other MSI laptop is great and still kicking. They’re wildly inconsistent but occasionally make a product I just can’t stay away from. MSI: avoid all their products unless you absolutely can’t.
After their GPU shorted out four times, I'll never be spending money on MSI ever again. ASUS and Corsair will STAY the only two brands I buy.

@@Beastw1ck I had an R7 360 from them and the cooling performance was terrible and a MOSFET blew after 13 months of use. I have a GTX 1650 Super from them and it has been performing quite well, same PCB and cooler as the 1660 Ti. And the X470 Gaming plus max also has been quite good for me so far. As you said, they make good products, but you better research before buying because they are no strangers to making instant e-waste

I'm surprised that not everybody is aware of how many if not most "industrial design" awards work. Its basically an advertising company that pumps out award badges instead of ads - deceptiv? Sort of, if you do not bother to check it out on their website...

Well unless they come from a truly Independed Testing Institution, but by this time the Product is already on the Shelves, since these Institutes don't test preproduction Samples, so getting the Awards on the Boxes won't happen until the Second production Run, which is to late for the marketing Team to brag about it.
It never ceases to amaze me how the absolute core functionality of something can be completely missed by the so-called professionals at these manufacturing companies.

I was gonna watch this like every other GN video in the last year, but that thumbnail really got me to click at 1am
5 am for me. Could not resist.
This is the exact reason I still use my Antec 900 case from years gone for one of my computers, it simply works.
Steve mentions early on that they had been working on this case for 7 years. This strikes of the marketing manager wining over engineering. "Just add an option for..." That radiator tray for example, looks like it was added very late in the design process, and engineering was already committed to the tooling for the rest of the case.

what my meaning was others saying that if Steve says another PC Case is Bad there would be comments of Bias so people don't buy it but buy the G/N Case, or if he did say another PC Case was Good there would be comments of people saying G/N must have been Paid to say those things as they would be losing money to another company if you do buy it instead of the G/N case, it is a no win for Credibility if they keep reviewing PC Cases
this goes well with their dragon center that installs a bunch of bloatware. i had to create a simple script to remove most of them just so i can control the RGB on my pc.. god damn it MSI

I have very similar case MSI MPG Sekira 100R, which fixed most of the problems you mention. Great case. They even replaced cables for front panel with moving contact pins.
But that would give MSI credit which they will never do on this channel.

We saw that when researching it! I guess a name has to come from somewhere, and certainly other mythologies are used often enough... it just seemed a little out of the blue for a computer case.

This is an example of when you let the marketing and design artist teams put together a product without consulting the engineering team.
semi agree but i'd say this is what happens when the design artist team doesn't consult the engineering team then 6 months after the final design was submitted the marketing team who didn't consult either of them goes "wtf, this case doesn't have big enough fans, we need to put 200mm fans on it and we need more glass and we need more RGB", doesn't consult the engineering team and goes straight to the manufacturing team and tells them to make these things fit.

Saw a deal on the 500p and was curious about the deal with the mesh around the perimeter of the side panels, I thought it might have issues, so thank you GN for confirming my suspicions and I will keep looking for something else
I still use a $45 Corsair Carbide 1 case I got over 5 years ago, with some customizations;
Externally mounted PSU, intake fan in its place, externally mounted top exhaust, removed drive cage to "free float" SSD's, secured in a way to manage airflow from front intakes.
x2 140mm intake fans at the front, x1 120mm intake on the bottom, x1 120mm rear exhaust, x1 120mm top exhaust, and it works quite well.

thank you so much for this, wasnt sure why my r9 5950x ran so hot even with a 360 cooler. after switching out just the one front black fan with 2 high speed 120mm fans on the inside, i see a 15 degree improvment on cpu, glass etc is alot cooler during game play.

I ended up with this a year or so ago. The case I ordered never showed up during mid 2020 (well it showed up 2 months late.) I went to Best Buy and it was the only case in stock. I haven't had any issues accept when I've pushed overclocks (in the newbie ways I've been learning.) Still getting great results for 5600x / 3080.

A review on the gungnir 110r would be nice to see in comparison to this... cheaper case but I feel the airflow might be better with the small vent in the middle of the front panel and magnetic mesh filter for the top
