Making S&OP Work, Part 1: An Intro to Implementing S&OP

Many people struggle to make their S&OP process work. However, with 3 key concepts, it’s easy to get your S&OP process to work for you. Doug Dedman, the president of DBM Systems goes on to explain the advantages of looking beyond just supply and demand, and how it can improve the way your operations are handled. Companies must learn instead how to balance their external view and internal view of the business. Their goal should instead be to get the best view, and understanding of what their customers want, and make it work with their own internal capabilities to meet their demand.
To determine this proper balance, your company must be disciplined with meetings to figure out what the external view looks like, determine your constraints and capabilities, and what you can efficiently deliver. Furthermore, you need to have a standardized way of presenting this to your business, so that all departments can read and come to a similar understanding of what’s being presented to them. By doing this, you eliminate the need to translate what is being presented as you move from one family to the next, and everybody has a common way of speaking about your process.
By mastering the Process, Families, and Data, an effective and efficient S&OP process is well within anybody’s reach.
