same but gps as primary and paper map + compass as backup. Plan waypoints or even an entire route on which you can navigate w/ phone. Keep phone and headtorch close to your body to their batteries warm to get full life from each.
If one wants to cover distance quickly, GPS is the way to go. Learn how to use this technology effectively and minimize it's shortcomings by complementing with map and compass when necessary and you are most certainly safer. Just one example: if you are below treeline and lost, good luck taking bearings. Of course if you're in a place where they have long since cut down all the trees, maybe you can still plod along with your map and compass.
