    Hi Frank,
    Thank you so much for this video. I replaced the bulb on my 5 year old W2000 after the bulb exploded (~3000 hours}. While I had the cover off, I noticed it was very dusty so I got trigger-happy with a can of compressed air and blasted the dust everywhere. When I powered on, I had terrible smudges. Focussing the lens, I could bring the dust into perfect focus, so I knew there was dust on the DMD chip. Found this video and followed along step-by-step. The DMD chip had a clear layer of dust on it. I blasted it with the can of air (I don't have a compressor) and cleaned all the rest of the fans and case. It's so much better now! Still 1 stubborn speck there though, so I'm going to tear down again. This time I'll try blowing air into the "hatch" you show in your other video first. (BenQ HT2050A DLP Projector | Optical Assembly Cleaning video.)
    I never would have attempted this without your video. I really appreciated you showing the re-assembly too. Made it much easier to follow along and not worry I missed something.
    **Update** For anyone curious how my 2nd attempt worked out:
    I took the cover off the projector and was able to access the hatch once the main plastic cover was off. I only had compressed air in cans and they weren't powerful enough to properly blast out the dust. Also I was worried about causing condensation in there with the cold air. Without a pump like the one shown in the video, I had to improvise. I unscrewed the connections at the end of the hose on my floor bike-pump and found that that gave a pretty good blast of air. I wanted to focus it more, so I used electrical tape to seal on a new head from a silicone sealant cartridge. This gave a great focussed blast of air. Using that, I blasted the hatch a few times and tested the projector with the cover off. I ran a "white background" video on TH-cam and focussed out until I could see tiny specks remaining on the DMD chip. Powered off and blasted a few more times. Now there are barely any specks there at all. You can only see them when focussed out on a white background. Once the picture is in focus, they are invisible. I'm delighted. Thanks Frank. I posted all that long info in case it helps someone else with similar problems and lack of tools!
    Thanks,
    Cd

      Thank you for your detailed repair experience on the w2000. My w2000 bulb blew and apparently I need to do similar to get all the glass out, so after hearing your success am going to give it a try and save the $1000 repair bill I've been quoted. I hope Frank's video equally leads to my success too (Oh just noticed that yours blew at 3000 hours... curious mine was about that old too, from what I saw before it blew -as the image projection seemed to dim a day before it blew out and I remember looking at the hours in the menu. Makes me wonder if the life on the bulbs it came with weren't up to spec for that batch?)

    Thank you very much for this video. After replacing an exploded lamp on my ht 2050, there appeared all these smudges in low light scenes, but nothing at all in scenes with good lighting. I thought perhaps it was something broken inside but eventually realized that these smudges could be brought into focus by changing the focal point, clearly revealing their nature. I finally did a full teardown and cleaned the whole thing. The dmd was covered in dust, cleaned carefully and voila! like new. The explosion must have sent dust everywhere.

Just ordered a new one from china. I hope its the right one. Hello Frank, thank you for these videos. I'm not super handy but successfully cleaned and replaced a lamp with relative ease. However, my color wheel broke and I had my friend who is very adept at this kind of thing "Fix it" but he said the lamp has no power now. He said I need a new lamp - without looking at it, is that something that could happen (meaning the color wheel causing the lamp to not work) or do you think it was not reconnected properly? Is there any other troubleshooting areas that go with color wheel replacement or do I need to just suck it up and get the lamp? If you are willing to work on it, what do you charge?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a good new lamp to be safe. Without a known good lamp, you are shooting in the dark. That said the color wheel is critical for operation. If the projector doesn't see the wheel spin up, it wont ignite the lamp. I dont know what your friend did but a color wheel replacement(if done properly) wont cause this. I suspect he forgot to plug something in or isn't giving you the full story.

    Hey Frank,
    I am interested in sending you my HT2050 for repair. Power light is green when i plug it in, fans start, sounds like the projector is booting up properly. Then lamp light starts flashing red, power starts flashing green and then lamp light goes to solid red until the projector goes back into standby mode with orange power light. No light whatsoever coming from the lens/lamp. Have not tried a new lamp yet. Noticed the plastic lamp connector was slightly discolored. The small plastic connector/snap piece broke off while disconnecting it. Did my best completely breaking it down and cleaning but same issue. If the projector has a red lamp light wouldn't a new lamp just have the same issue since I am unable to get the lamp to light to reset the timer?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fortunately the lamp timer will not cause your projector to not start. Only a handful of older models did that. Never BenQ thankfully. I suspect you have another issue, maybe a color wheel, maybe a ballast or power supply issue. The missing clip on the connector is okay. Not ideal but not a huge issue.
      I'd be happy to look at it if you want. But first, let me ask, where did you get the replacement bulb and is it an Osram?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! If your projector is not shutting down and giving you a temp error, it is probably working properly. The fans will cycle on and off as needed so they may not be running when you look. You definitely want to remove the dust as that will help the projector run cooler for sure but I would not worry about the fans unless you are getting a Temp error. If you do get a temp LED flashing and the projector turns off, then I would look at changing the fans. Projectors do run very hot. The exhaust air can be 140-170f / 60-77c which will feel very warm.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'd be more suspicious of the color wheel. Those fans should be okay for at least 5 years but I could see the color wheel going bad. if the noise stops as soon as you turn it off before the cooling cycle ends, then you know it's the color wheel.
      Cleaning the fans anyway is never a bad idea just be careful you are not fixing something that isn't broken if that makes sense.

    Hmm somehow this makes no sense to me. When you saw the white spots for the first time they became more visible after you took the picture out of focus. Stuck DMD mirrors would be best visible when the image is in focus right. And how can the lamp fixed the issue? All the lamp does is throw light into the projector. Spots and this like that will most likely be in the optical parts of the projector. Weird...

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the whole problem made no sense to me at first. The lamp was not shining bright enough. When a lamp is dim, it shows more dust bits that normally it would shine through/around and wash out. Stuck DMD will not always be in focus if the pixels slipped. I have seen plenty where the substrate that holds the mirrors lets loose and mirrors are no longer in the same focal plane. But the focusing was why I stopped thinking it was the DMD. I was going off the lamp hours in the projector without knowing they had been reset.

    Hi Frank, great video, I wouldn't have attempted the strip down without it for fear of breaking the casing.
    I have a identical projector in the UK its badged as a W2000, the only difference I can see is it has the capacity for a add-on wi-fi component.
    Recently my lamp exploded and a small puff of smoke can out of the projector and tripped my mains electrics.
    I've stripped the projector about four times and removed all the glass and dust, there was a piece of glass in the lamp fan that I'm guessing caused the machine to cut short the initial start up. I also noticed something was interfering with the the colour wheel so I dismantled it but found nothing, on reassembling it seemed free wheeling.
    I've tried two new bulbs, and checked the bulb housing for continuity. The machine boots up and I can hear the fans but soon powers down without the lamp coming on, then the red lamp warning appears and the machine goes into standby. I took out the bulb assembly and can see the colour wheel spinning freely. Unfortunately I'm not in the states otherwise I'm at the point where I'd send it to you!
    Do you think it could be the ballast power supply?
    Do you think its worth dismantling the machine to clean the colour wheel sensor?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Graham, I am curious about the puff of smoke and the tripping of your RCD. IT kind of sounds like you may have had a main power supply failure(power factor correction circuit). I would check and see if any of the capacitors (mainly the large 400V) have vented. If the lamp burst and the arc points hit together before the ballast shut down, it can cause a bit of a domino affect failure. The ballast can be damaged which then takes out the PFC section of the power supply.
      I'd be leaning towards checking the mains supply first(that lowest board that plug into the ballast and mainboard). Then the ballast. The ballast wont start unless the mains supply is happy. How comfortable are you with a volt meter? Cheers from the other side of the pond!

    • @leesbeandribblers
      @leesbeandribblers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FixitFrank Thanks for the prompt, insightful reply Frank.
      I've stripped down the colour wheel since the machine needed dismantling anyway and it visually looks fine.
      On checking the PFC, the large capacitor seems fine, but the small black one 1000uf 16v (which can be seen at 26mins) nearest to the connectors that protrude through to the upper board seemed to show a reading. I am however checking it in circuit and with my cheap multimeter, I don't feel competent enough with my cheap iron to remove it. The other two (brown 680uf25v) seem ok. None show signs of leaking or bulging.
      I checked out your ballast diagnosis video and found that one of the four mosfets is shorting and beeps with a continuity test across all posts. I might have ago at removing it since I have a replacement on the way.
      Do you think the black capacitor on the PFC could be problematic? I don't want to damage the new ballast.
      Do you think the puff of smoke may just be the from the exploding bulb? There's no sign of scorching on any components or anywhere else inside the machine.
      Again, thanks for your expert opinion.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was a puff of smoke rather than a cloud, then it might have just been the lamp you saw smoking. The crack noise may have been the bulb bursting. The ballast failure is pretty spot on though. I have seen that a bunch of times. I would suspect the rest of the caps are OK . It would be very obvious if they failed if the smoke came from them.
      More likely the bulb burst, shorted out and wrecked the one mosfet. Then shut down the power supply. The PFC is still suspect but you can check that with the ballast removed. You should get about 380Vdc on the power input to the ballast when you start the projector. It should go high to 380 for a moment before it sees no response from the ballast and shuts back down. If you get 350-300, then the PFC circuit isnt working. The mosfet for it as well as the fuse resistors and maybe a diode could be damaged(only if you dont get the 380).
      I would connect the ballast back up without the power leads connected. Meaning connect the control wire cable only. That will load down the control circuit correctly. Then carefully hold the leads on the wire that would plug into the ballast from the power supply and turn the projector on. The 380 should show about when the color wheel starts to spin. Then the wheel will stop and the 380 should drop to 300-350v. As long as you see that 380, the rest is probably OK. You just may need a pair of mosfets. I say pair because you want to replace them in pairs even if one seems OK. Or if you can find a used/working ballast. As of now, I would start with check the PFC voltage and go from there. It sounded a lot more dire at first, but it may not be as bad as it seemed.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Believe it or not, most of the time filters cause more damage. Not because they are wrong but because most people forget/neglect to deal with them. They get clogged and then the projector truly cooks itself to death. A lot of companies have gone for the "let as much air pass through as possible" approach and more times than not the dust goes right through.

    I would have thought the lamp fail before getting dim enough to not shine past dust inside. Guess not all the time. Also, the free labor thing would be cool for a video, but you're kinda already doing that, right?

      Exactly. It really depends on the issue, what sort of free time I have etc. This was recorded back in March so things have changed a little. I have a day job (obviously) otherwise I'd be more into charging a normal rate.

    Hi Frank, love your videos! I have an Optoma GT1080HDR with a scuffed outer lense. I tried to polish it out which helped a little bit like take away the dark spots on the screen and now it looks ok but has a blur spot that's very annoying. You mentioned in the video that you could try to fix the problem so you could do a TH-cam video on it. Well if it's at all possible I'd like to send it out to ya. I'd pay all shipping and replacement parts of course. Let me know. Thanks!

    What are your specs in custom user EQ settings?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pardon my ignorance but I'm not sure what you mean? If you mean on the projector, I'm not honestly sure. I repaired it for someone and they set it to their liking. I did not notice any EQ settings

    sir i have optoma Hd 143x projector , am used to 2nd monitor on macbook pro , i have problem if laptop charger connect time projector not view display what is right solution , i have try changed hdmi cable and power supply cable not working

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is an unusual problem! I would check the laptop charger. Make sure it is proper wattage for the macbook. I have never seen this problem but if the power is too low from the charger the second display may not work properly.

      If your using a hub with the macbooks that only have the one usb port, it could be that the hub can't handle both at once and you need a better one.
