  • This BenQ HT2550 was sent in to my day job after the owner had the lamp assembly burst and he claimed to smell something burning. Upon initial diagnosis, I can tell someone was inside without actually checking how to get inside. The lamp door had the screws ripped off and there was all sorts of weirdly assembled things that I will show you. The heatsink on the DMD was interesting...
    I found the power supply and ballast to be okay. The main cause was likely all the dust buildup and probably an incorrectly installed lamp assembly.
    After some cleaning and reassembly it was good to go and sent back to its owner. Hopefully they check the manual next time to change the lamp instead of using a crowbar...
    If you need a DMD for one of these, the part # is 1910-513AB. This part number and the video should apply to the W1700, TK800, TK800M as well as this HT2550.
    If you need a lamp assembly for one of these, go here and use code YT50 for 5% off and always free ground shipping. www.purelandsupply.com/5jjhn0...
    Thanks for watching!

    Unless there is something I've missed, it looks like the electronics bay cooling fan has been installed the wrong way around. At 19:51 the fan is installed with the label pointing inwards, and at 58:29, the fan is installed with the label pointing outwards of the projector. This could affect the cooling significantly because the design of the projector is for the electronics fan to bring cool air in, across the electronics, out into the lamp compartment through the blower, and exhaust through the lamp fan.
    In the incorrect configuration, the fans will fight each other.
    Perfectionists will be forever bothered by this comment either way hehe

      The only fan blowing out is the exhaust fan in the lamp basket. The others blow in. I ran it for a few hours anyway. I couldn't trust anything in that projector.

    Another good job. Fans are problematic more in Benq than any other brands. They tend to wear out quicker for some rhyme or reason. Must be something to do with the design of the projector rather than the quality of the fans.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I've had experience with Mitsubishi DLP TVS, but no projectors. Have acquired a non working HT2150st. When plugged in, power led blinks, all other LEDs are off. Unit supposedly worked ok, looks very clean. No diagnostic covers this led status. Hope you have a good Thanksgiving.

    I am always in awe with people not respecting things they own. Things cost money to get and by treating everything like an one use and throw away item, will really inflate your debt in no time. I was visiting my best friend today who happens to be the mechanic working on my car. Guy had a 2017 Citroen that was looking like it was used in the Gulf war. Poor thing was asking to be put out of it's missery, while the owner was asking for a discount to the jobs that were done, claiming that "times are tough" and all that jazz.
    I do not get it. My 1998 Corolla with 750K miles on the odometer ( 1 million 79K KMs) is looking like it was purchased yesterday. I really do not know how someone treats a new car/projector/anything like that and end up compalining like it is someone else's fault. I guess I will never know in the long run. But what I really know is that I am the one with zero debt in the end of the day. Love your videos Franky, gotta repair them all!!!!!!

      That sort of thing drives me nuts. I also drive an older toyota. 2002 sequoia(we like our SUVs here in the USA) with 230,000 miles(roughly 370,100 Km). I plan on driving it into the ground. I take good care of it. regular oil changes, new timing belt etc.
      taking care of your stuff just feels good too.

    If the plastic is ABS (and you can obtain this where you are) Evo-Stik extra-strong PVC pipe weld can be used, but use caution / experiment first as it melts ABS together.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great advice! I have used that (similar product) with a lot of success. I ended up using CA glue(thick stuff) and it worked out great. Fortunately there is little stress on those points.
      You are definitely right about testing. I melted the crap out a lamp door one time trying to fix the tab with that PVC glue.

    Hi Frank, I'm happy I found your channel! I've learned a lot already.
    I'm trying to fix a w2700 which I bought on eBay. Did you ever come across a case with these symptoms?
    It turns on, shows a BenQ logo (but in black and white) and then a blue screen. After about a minute it turns off. I don't seem to get a menu on the screen or any other reaction from the projector. The light seems to work fine.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Max, What are the LED's doing when it shuts down? It sounds either like a bad mainboard or something error related(bad fan, color wheel problem, something shuts the lamp off). I think the logo is supposed to be black and white on these(not 100% sure though). If you get a blue screen, then the color wheel should be working.

    • @Marniks100
      @Marniks100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FixitFrank thanks for the reply!
      I've done some more testing. And the symptoms are a bit different than described above.
      1. The projector stays on now that all fans are connected again.
      2. After the gray/white BenQ logo, the screen is not blue, but more gray with a vague glow of pink over 80 percent of the screen. And a bit of green tint glow on the top left corner. Nothing on the screen changes when I press menu or source.
      3. With startup I hear a high pitch noise for 2 seconds before I hear what I assume is the color wheel revving up.
      4. The previous owner states that there was a power problem that caused this problem.
      5. Only the power LEDs are on.
      6. The projector nicely turns off when I hold the power button.
      My hope that it is maybe the power wheel?
      Or should I start fault finding the electronics?
      Thanks for taking the time to reply!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. That is really really weird. If the color wheel stops spinning at all, the projector should shut down immediately. I suspect there might be a low voltage problem, Possibly capacitors if there was a power incident. I do not know the proper voltages to expect on the low voltage pins but I would suspect to see 12-13v, 5v, 3.3 and maybe 24v. If you see any weird looking voltages that are far off from those, I would investigate further. Maybe even give a visual examination of the capacitors on the power supply. Other than that, I would get into the service menu and see if any errors are listed. I think you press menu, then enter/source at the same time.

    Fantastic job!
    I have a Viewsonic PX-747-4k that´s very similar to this Benq. My projector is turnning off after aprox 2minutes and power led keep blue and temp led red. The fans are running, can You give some tips?
    At 26minutes you checked the diodes and get around 500 . Here they are around 1000, this is bad? can be the problem?

    Thanks, what is that for a filter / glass in front of the color wheel? Is that some kind of polarizer?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's just a glass window to keep the dust out. It didnt seem to have a coating but I didn't really examine it. The lamp assembly has the UV/IR glass so I don't think it's that. It could be a polarized glass piece but I don't know.

    benq is horralble i had 3 projectors from then and 2 broken in 2 years they would always get dirty and the start having problems the dmd chip mised up on 2 the 3ed one got stolen before it could break

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      BenQ is okay. Sounds like you has a tough time though. Like all brands you get what you pay for. In the under$3000 category BenQ is decent enough.
      All that said, if you had that many issues I don't blame.you at all for not likeling them. Hopefully you have something now that works!

    Thank you sir. I have the w1700 with one “stuck” mirror. It’s one white pixel near the centre of the image, so i am thinking about ordering a replacement dmd and they seem to be available on Aliexpress. where would you recommend purchasing one from? Did you replace the heat sink paste when you reseated the dmd? Cheers 👍

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest the company I use. they include a thermal pad which I find better than paste. Paste is okay but it can get into the pin area. the company I use is Time electronics. You can contact them at gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com They ship DHL and take paypal. Very reputable. Price should be competitive with Aliexpress.

      @@FixitFrank would you expect dmd chips to last years and years? I read somewhere benq rate some of their dmd chips to 100,000 hours, so far my chip has failed before the first lamp replacement 😆😒

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would expect it to last the life of the projector. The most common reason I see for failure is heat buildup. Make sure the insides stay as dust free as possible and run as cool as possible. DMD's have a certain temp they can run to, before they get unreliable. I see the newer UHD optoma series fail in about 1-2 years because they build them to run on the edge of the top temp.
      Its more likely yours was defective from the factory(unless you notice a lot of dust buildup). I have pets in the house so I have to clean my electronics from pet hair a few times a year. My parents have no pets so they barely even need to have me clean their projector.
      With proper heat sink pads or paste and good normal levels of cooling the new DMD should last a long time in my opinion.

      @chrisc7262 ปีที่แล้ว

      @FixitFrank just wanted to pop back and say "Thank you" 😊
      Replaced my DMD chip, new thermal pad and all back together working as good as new. Not a job for everyone. But it is an off the shelf part and possible to replace with the information you have provided. Cheers mate 🍻
