    There is a reason why eating out in Thailand is the norm. Today we go food shopping in Thailand and you will not believe how much the basics cost.
    Street food is my usual asian go to and as you can see, there is a reason for this! If plan to come travel to Thailand or live here permanently then this video will hopefully shed some light as to what to expect to pay for food.

      That is a very expensive supermarket. Normal supermarkets such as Tesco Lotus and Macro are MUCH cheaper. I get most of my stuff from the market nearby, fruit and veg all grown locally. Imported items that Thai people don't eat are expensive, best to just get what the locals eat

    FYI. For people who haven't been to Thailand, this is a high-end supermarket with emphasis on imported and premium products in a quite high-end shopping mall. People don't usually shop there unless they want a very specific imported goods (or they are well-off enough to not care about the price). Typical supermarkets where Thais shop most of the time are much cheaper ($2 for 4 apples, $6 for 0.5 lbs of Mozzarella cheese, etc.). Supermarkets like Tesco Lotus, Big C, and Max Value have some imported goods and more than decent quality products 👍. So yeah, since there is no explanation in the description, I'm putting it out there so no one misunderstood that grocery shopping in Thailand is always expensive 😂.

      @@PaddyDoyle. Yes that is true but you are giving the impression throughout the video that all supermarkets are expensive. Your title is: "Food Shopping in Thailand's Ridiculously Expensive Supermarkets" and you reiterate that several ties in the video without saying you were shopping at one of the most expensive markets in Chaing Mai, only rivaled by other stores in the same upscale chain. While it is true that a premium is charged for imported goods as they are everywhere in the world, items like locally grown produce are a lot more expensive at that chain than the average market.

      But to be fair imported stuff are more expensive then required. Even Tesco, Big C or Super Cheap (Phuket) gives you quite an bill when you shop. Looking at Thai income it is quite strange. But yes if you go fresh market it will be cheaper and good quality as well!

    • @benrawson007
      @benrawson007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BurnnerArtwork It's not misleading. Supermarket shopping is more expensive in Thailand than UK (for example). Yes this supermarket is a high end one but all are more expensive in general.

    Hi Paddy, been a subscriber for a while now, but only now really spending the time going through your back catalogue. Really enjoying the journey so far, and I've already watched some of your later videos. It's really great watching someone who genuinely enjoys what they're doing. Given this video is almost a year old now, it's probably a mute point, but there is an app that I and a few of my friends use to track our travels called Polar Steps, I'm not sure it will help with the channel, specifically, but given all the travelling you've done (and will be doing, hopefully!), it can be really interesting to look back at where you've been and see memories.

    Yes shopping in certain stores can be eye opening, but the same it true with places like Whole Foods in the US which is probably a good comparison to the one you are at. We shop at the local Tesco and Big C but mostly at the local markets which is very, very affordable. Western and imported foods like imported fruits and vegetables are expensive and we sometimes get them but for the most part we stick to local produce. The green mango you got was super expensive as something similar in the local markets here is 20 baht. I know you will enjoy your upcoming trip, hit me up once you get around Aranyaprathet

    Hey Paddy right after we got into Lampang Gigs dad took us to a super market to shop since we came totally unexpected. We spent just over 3700 THB and I was like how is it this much! Thankfully on the way home further north we stopped for lunch at a small shop and paid a little over $1 USD for a big noodle dish with duck. Cheap eats / small shops all over thankfully!

    Hey Paddy, been following you since budgetteers season 1. My plan is to get back to thailand coming Christmas and new year. Hopefully the whole covid situation allows me to go back. It will my 7th visit and looking for new stuff to see. So I'll be watching your channel closely and hopefully you'll inspire me and show me some cool new places to go. Good luck and have fun on your new adventure!

    Good to see they still sell my favourite beer - London Pride! B209 ~£5. I’m paying almost £3 here in the UK. On special offer here in Tesco UK - 3 bottles for £5. So yes, one bottle for a fiver is a bit expensive. I would still buy them for a special treat though!

    Next stop you should go to local , the real local market that opens only morning,Klong toey market. You can find all this stuff as the same as in the mall but without air conditioner. I believe the price would be a half of this mall or less

    I experimented with cooking all my meals at home in bangkok and I was spending $200 USD per week on very basic groceries (fish, chicken, rice, veggies, Greek yogurt).
    My grocery bill is higher than the average thai salary. I have no idea how the majority of thai people afford to live.

    Cool little bit at the end pads. So if I click your Amazon link and then do my normal shop, you should get a cut? Have I understood that right?
