    I’m all for the new air king. Upgraded movement, height reduction and the 3 6 9 lumed for the bonus are some highlights I admire. I think it’s a home run.

    I am on you with this one, the old Air King wins it for me. Having owned the 116900 for 2yrs I am against the idea of adding "0" to "5" as it also look off balance being much bigger than "10". Looking at the 126900 now, the "10" looks off balance. The 116900 is surprisingly legible at a glance precisely because the 3,6,9 hour markers are applied full WG which differenciates from the other minute markers. The current lumed 3,6,9 to me makes the dial looks more busy and confusing as it blends in with the white numerals minute markers. Pilot watches are traditionally suppose to have big crown with no crown guards and somehow the new Air King ended up with crown guards 🤷‍♂️. My only grip is the lack of lume on 116900 and maybe Rolex should have just added lume to the white minute numerals or on the "-" of the chapter rings at every 5 minute interval like the vintage air kings with a dot lume at the end of the applied indices on the chapter ring.

  • @AKhan.28
    @AKhan.28 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    The new Air King is perfect now. Slimmer, Sharper, Sportier, Symmetrical, and Lumed 3 6 9. I honestly didn't mind the older one, but never considered purchasing it.

    I have to disagree- the "05" is a crucial element to the overall aesthetic of the watch's design. It's paramount to saying that single note was not crucial to the melody of a song. Maybe it isn't but it sure helps make everything complete.
    ...the lume, and crown guards also help a great deal.

    • @keesketsers5866
      @keesketsers5866 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the single 5 has been used on pilot watches since WW2..... So changing it to 05 makes absolutely no sense. Only Rolex fans had a problem with the "5" where for 70 years no one had problems with it on all other pilot watches with minute markers.

  • @almehgub
    @almehgub 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I personally prefer the "5" on the 116900 over the "05", but other than that I think the 126900 is an complete and a total improvement.

    I tend to agree. I realize this is subjective, but I prefer most of the physical characteristics, of the prior generation. To my knowledge, you are the first to bring the entire case redesign, to light. At least that I've seen. It really is quite comical, that everyone is so fixated on the slight dial change, and addition of crown guards, that they failed to realize, that 2/3 of the rest of the piece, has changed entirely, w/ the case and clasp. SMH. We really are an odd bunch. Great video. Here's wishing you, all the best, Oisin. Cheers....

    Great review as always. Bit different from the norm👍
    I had the old Airking wen it first came out but sold it to get a 39mm Explorer One… and immediately regretted it. Put my name down to replace the Airking but was disappointed that the original was discontinued and the new version was not to my liking (mainly because of the revised case shape and crown guards). Then, while on holiday in France in June this year got a call from AD to say they had the discontinued model available if I wanted it. Reserved it and collected it on 24th June. It is registered with Rolex dated 24th June so must be one of the last registered originals

    • @mikemush9741

      That worked out perfectly for you! Sometimes in watches you have to pick up "better" models and try a few different ones to confirm the one you really loved all along. I did roughly the same thing. I went 116900 Air-King to a 39mm Explorer and immediately regreted it. It wears so much smaller and thinner than the Air-King. Sold it, tried a few other watches, then got the 126900 Air-King and liked many of the upgrades, but somehow didn't connect with it and moved it along in just a few months. I just finally reacquired the 116900 and can't wait to have it back in the mix. It's a keeper! It's imperfections are part of the charm for sure.

    I do love my "old" one (big wrist guy) and will not trade it for the 126900 ... they tried to make it a little bit "more perfect". In a way this reminds me of the newer car-designs ... always "better" but they all look the f... same to me.

    This is an interesting perspective. I always felt like the last iteration was a bit of a lazy design....a mashup of a Milgauss case with a dial variation of the Explorer 39mm. So for me, I welcome these changes to the new version of the Air-King, as it becomes something of its own. Anyway, nice video, as always.

    Rolex clearly explained their reasoning in several of their literature. I don't understand why we keep harping on where the dial design came from. I loved the old Air King and love the new one even more. It is the only watch in Rolex catalog that is a tribute to the Pioneers in Aviation.

      @@bigmacdaddy1234 most people's problem with this watch is exactly the dial design, because rolex watches are all tributes to some feat of humanity but the air kings design is based on a failed project (landspeed car) but you would only know that if you actually paid attention to what most of the people in these video's say rather than trolling some guy giving his opinion in the comment section. Got the call a couple weeks ago for the new Air King and I absolutely love it. I'm a big fan of the upgrades over the old one personally. The fact that they doubled down on this design alone makes it that much weirder lol. I disagree with you and think that the 05 makes it more symmetrical. Also like the thinned out case and crown guards personally. Both are cool new one wins for me and it didn't take me all that long to get one at retail, which leaves hope that it won't be so impossible anymore

    I can appreciate the new more sporty case design with the hard sharp edges and flat slab sides, but given a choice I much prefer the smoother, softer, and curvey style of the old case. More elegant and refined in my opinion. With the availability these days I’ll take either, but will admit the harder lines of the new case make it seem like I’d be less afraid of actually treating it like a tool.

      I've seen 116900s hit 126900 MSRP recently. Market is probably going to drop a lot more in the next few months, I'm glad I got my 126900 at the AD last month. I was served up this vid after watching Part 3 of the Certified Pre-Owned Rolex stream of consciousness. I had seen it before but gave it a tap to take a second look. I had forgotten the Milgauss comparison. Seeing that tripped a synaptic link.
    So I checked the comments and there was my plea to Rolex not to change Milgauss until I got mine from the AD. No way of pinpointing the comment date but shortly thereafter (mid-Aug2022)… "I got the call" from the AD… my chunky-sided Milgauss had arrived. Given the conversation with Danielle at J&W, I must have been the only person to have "Registered an Interest" in a Milgauss. She mentioned recalling my gushing about it as she opened the delivery (the before I collected it) from wherever US-based ADs get their new stock. She could have been blowing smoke but why bother. Anyway, I'm now happy for Rolex to discontinue the Milgauss as I've now got mine at retail price from the AD only about five or six months after I "Registered an Interest" in this beautiful chunky beast. I wear it daily (and nightly too for that matter) only taking it off for showers. Its consigned my 2020 stainless & white gold with fluted bezel 36mm DateJust with a bright blue dial and jubilee bracelet to my jewellery box. It's the size of the Milgauss that compels me to wear this everyday. It's damn near perfect and fits my 7.5" wrist just right (and so much better than the 36mm DateJust).

    AGREE that the older one has all the quirks and charm. The new one has a lot less of that silliness that made the old one so special.

    Circeled back to watch this again since you decided to part with the newer one. I’d forgotten how good this video was. BTW, TH-cam has added quite a few commercials to it. I certainly hope you get a taste. Even if you’re not in it for the money, it doesn’t hurt so I waded thru them all. Cheers.

    I bought a 1 month old Air King right before Covid hit. I was looking for a 39mm Explorer but they they had suddenly gone way up in price. I found my Air King from a S. American AD that was selling it for retail on Ebay. Ebay was having this crazy 15% off sale for most luxury watches when I found this one. 15% off retail for a professional Rolex. Not only yes, but hell yes! This is a fun watch that makes me smile because I know it's so damn quirky. When Rolex decides to get rid of it (old/new) style) I have my doubts that they will make something like this again. Roll in Sad music like your video.......

    I love that you use good music and don't care about the monetising,
    Took be back to del boy and the jolly boys outing then the end tune I love that.

    Very odd I think to put 05, I mean you wouldn't say zero 5 when counting

    What a brilliant video. Really wasn't expecting all the beautiful B-roll and background scenery. I can say I didn't understand the passion for Rolex models until hearing your perspective. I saw them as fairly homogenous, but the examples you gave of the case shapes and contours that separate the tool watches from the professional lines... I think I get it now. The new Air King certainly got me excited, but I never looked closely at the one it's replaced to be able to appreciate the nuances you've pointed out. I can see how how it's possible to perceive that the character has been lost. Enjoy your journey in good health.

    ATTN: ROLEX… NO messing with the Milgauss until I purchase mine in its current iteration. It’s just SUCH A BEAUTIFUL tool watch as it is now that there’s NO NEED to change. (And to that end, please supply sufficient stock to James & Williams Jewelers in Berwyn, IL USA to satisfy their “Register of Interest” such that I’m offered an opportunity to make my purchase.)
    Another fantastic video Oisin! I agree that the old Air-King case is the superior example. Other than that, I like the changes to the new Air-King, particularly the lumed 3, 6, 9 indices and the - wait for it - more balanced 05 minute marking. And who wouldn’t be happy moving up to 70 hours of power reserve?
    Keep up the GREAT VIDEOS!

    I think you answered your own question about the Milgaus. With silicon hair springs etc the Faraday cage is no longer needed, therefore is there a need for the Milgaus when watches like the Omega Aqua Terra are rated to 15000 gaus? The logical chop from the line is actually the Milgaus. As for the Blood Hound instrument, it was an aviation instrument that needed some modifications and Rolex built it as part of their sponsorship of the vehicle. I’ve spent my working life as a pilot, there’s been a lot of “aviator” watches over the years, but none with the simplicity we all needed which the Airking brings. My grandfather was a wartime pilot, peacetime test pilot until retirement and his daily workwear watch was a Rolex. That Rolex travels daily in my briefcase so that part of him carries on flying. I used use a no date sub for work that he gave me, it’s now incredibly tired and a 41mm Aqua Terra does that job, but the new Airking really appeals.

    Maybe this case will be used for a larger Explorer in addition to the 36mm? Great video as always.

    The new one is much more proportional. The 3,6 and 9 is an improvement and the 05 improves the symetry. Although I do agree that the dial design as a whole is still messy.

    I agree the older model has more character bigger that suits pilot watch more than the new model that looks like any other Rolex tool watch. Big fan of the case shape of the older model. I’m a pilot I like the old vs the new one as you note on this most excellent review video
