Your presentations are creative and thoughtfully crafted. This one is no exception. Now I am a man approaching the age of 70. I have worn my Explorer for a large part of my life, and it has been all over the world in all manner of conditions. I can only speak for my own timepiece. It has acquired a soul, as perhaps I have as well. In the rare instances when someone in a chance encounter recognizes the Explorer, their next glance at my face is not quite the same as the first. Suddenly you have that touch of mystery about you. At this point in life, that is quite priceless.

I just had a Tag Carrera for 10 years. Wore it every day. It went with me on all my travels and adventures. But then I jumped into a lake with it on and destroyed the movement. Cost me a lot of money to replace and I realised 50m water resistance is nothing and there are watches out there specifically for jumping into lakes. I bought a Seiko diver. This got me into collecting and now I have 10 watches. The notion of a one watch collection ended up costing me 800 quid.

You actually make some really valid points in this video and it wasn’t before I watched your videos pointing out that watch “reviewers” are actually ADs that I started to truly question what I was watching. There are not many true independent watch reviewers out there and the lack of pros AND cons in watches is very noticeable. Thank you for your content and continuing to educate and throw your own opinions out there. We may not all agree with everything you say, but nor should we. That’s what brings about good conversations, healthy debates and promotes educated independent thinking like those Greek rapscallions used get up to a few years ago. Keep on being you TGV 🙏🏼👍🏼

It’s the size. 36mm Rolex is perfect for those of us who lack overstuffed appendages. My DJ41 is truly a work of art but damned if it doesn’t look simply gargantuan on my puny 6.5” wrist. Cursed Arnie and Sly are responsible for Rolex diving headlong into the (hopefully short-lived) Uber-large watch trend. That only works on a diver or Pilots watch or G-shock, not an everyday do-it-all like the Explorer, DJ, or Day-Date. Well-done as always Mr. TGV!

For myself this rings so true, there is no one watch to rule them all, but for my wife I bought her a ladies Rolex pink dial day date on a jubilee bracelet 21 years ago as my wedding gift to her and its the only watch she has worn everyday since. To here it is perfection, maybe its cause it Rolex, or maybe because I bought it for her, or a combo of the two. My Tudor Pelagos FXD is my Rolex explorer.

I'm glad you're keeping the explorer. As I (hopefully) grow more mature and wise, I've come to appreciate the things that mean something to me, regardless of what the prevailing opinion may be. I've gotten rid of a lot of things over the years that I now wish I'd kept, but also, I've come close to getting rid of others, and in doing so, come to appreciate them all over again. I've always found Rolex to be too associated with flexing, but over the last year or so, I've come around to the idea that I might actually like to have an Explorer (were I suddenly to find myself with abundant discretionary income). It's subtle, understated, and elegant. I just like the watch, regardless of whether it has that crown on the dial or not. Great video as always!

Okay very interesting take on the Bond character who is even more vacuous in the stories. Ironically I always found the movie versions to flesh out the character a tad more obviously necessary for the screen, but also creating a rebellious “Everyman”. Each actor having his own interpretation of this though Daniel Crag topping this off (IMHO) in cold rage. For me, it was as if Camus” Meursault were in the role of Bond, still vacuous, but more of the void staring back at him. I know this has nothing to do with watches, but I did like your bond point

I do agree with the guy that commented that you’ve become more bitter.
You used to be a lot more about the watches and their history. It was a lot more about the hobby and less about the people that spoil it. Talking about the former has soured and maybe even spoiled your channel for me. I used to get excited for each and every video. You still have the elements that made you a great channel (my number one) in the beginning. I just wish you could get out of this phase of expressing what sounds like disdain for the things that spoil the hobby and the market.
Even your saying “onwards and upwards” is more true to the roots of the channel. Looking ahead and up, not letting ourselves be weighed down by sins of others.

I think you're wise to hang onto it. I personally hankered after the Explorer for a long time, but my desire subsided as the newer models just aren't "tooly" enough. You are right that Rolex is a "flex" brand now which totally puts me off most of their offerings. The waitlists put me off anyway. I've come to the realization I prefer the Tudor equivalent of the Explorer, the "Ranger". It's somehow more "me" Much less shine, printed indices, also as my wrist is a but larger at 7 1/2", the 39mm is my "go to" watch size. It has its own heritage and is (after all), the Explorer's "first cousin".

I live in a city where I see them everywhere and doubt that any of the people I see use it for what it was designed for. I have 7 5/8" wrists and a big watch is not a problem so two years ago I bought a Glashutte Original SeqQ Panorama Date and have decided to sell the Sub. It just doesn't have the same value to me.

Personally, I'm into games design, and I'm currently transitioning into UI/UX Design. It's very interesting stuff, and it sort of ties into watches, in regards to user experience. Like if you have a watch but the font illegible, the hands are too dark compared to the dial, and the bezel doesn't serve any practical function, it's all user experience.

  • @TheRunningManZ

I don't get being put off a brand because of social media and the mass market. Whether that's because a brand is considered unpopular, for example Hublot (some are overpriced with what is inside them but not all are terrible), but equally on the other end of the scale watches that are over hyped such as Rolex or PP/AP etc.
Rolex make great watches, you can like them for you and not because of any other reason. When I'm going out or to a gathering I pretty much always dress down my watch with a desire to not stand out with something flashy. But my watches are for me, I can quite happily own and enjoy a hype watch and wear it when it's just me walking the dog or working from home etc. It's my collection, the idea of being put off a brand because of the hype is as stupid to me as being put off a brand because they are unpopular.
Get over both and judge the watches on their own merit and how they make you feel.
I think being a YTer talking about watches for a long time is likely to lead to more animosity towards the biggest hype watches because every video you are faced with a choice between getting good views by talking about Rolex, or making the video you are actually passionate about which less people will be interested in watching. This is going to lead to a resentment to the brand but your audience wont have that. It's lead to an ever expanding quest for clicks on YT, even your thumbnail for this video is click baity a little (this is not a bad thing, I'm not calling it out as it being so either), most channels have gone way more down that path of course.
PS you have become a little bitter over the years. You talk down on other YTers and the state of things far too much with words like "vapid" being used far too often. You may well be right but if you put down your competition whilst looking down your nose at others, describing other channels as tainted as watch dealers etc. You yourself were tied in with a watch dealer for a time. Still love your vids, but if you are in a car dealership and they spend all their time talking down the other dealers you tend to feel like walking out. No need to put down other content, your knowledge is great, your ideas for videos are great, maybe be a little less "old man shouts at cloud" if you can.
You talk about corporate shilling, you had a contract with Watchbox. Be real, make your great videos and stop putting everyone else down if you can. From someone who also falls into the old man shouts at cloud trap too much themselves too.

Excellent video - as per usual. The history, the conversation, the footage... all top notch. The Explorer and the OP 36mm are the two Rolexes that I would actually consider pursuing... however the 1016 is my favorite variant of the Explorer by far. The Nivada Grenchen F77 is an amazing watch also btw. Cheers.

The Explorer is a great watch. Lately however, I developed an attraction to my Black Bay 58. I have an extensive collection but the BB58 in my opinion could be the only watch one will ever need. But as you said the horological promiscuity is tormenting me every single day and this momentous “crush” could end soon.

Always loved the simplicity of the explorer and was looking forward to picking one up and fortunately I was lucky to try one on before buying one and sadly it was too small for my large wrist and just didn’t work. The watch is beautiful and simple. Fell back into wearing my 16610 from 99 on a black Everest rubber strap which is so understated 🤙🏻

I must say, TGV: it's silly to let other's opinions affect your appreciation of a watch. Think of your own heroes. Think that's how they'd handle hype? No, they'd rise above it. (I picked that up from you, I think...)

The Explorer (39 MKII) is my grail watch, meaning it’s my daily watch that fits best my life style 24/7.
I’m not saying it’s the best watch ever or the best Explorer model, it’s not. And it’s not cheap either.
But if it ticks all the boxes and it works for me great.
But it doesn’t mean I’m done with watches etc… I still love vintage watches and wear them (more) carefully.
Rolex only makes sense if worn for 20/30 years. They are long term watches, and meant to be worn for decades and become “your” watch. Not meant to be changed every six months as a fashion accessory. 🤔

As a bigger chap myself, I always liked the 36mm Explorers but they looked a bit squished on my wrist. Alas, the 39mm mk.2 was the one for me that I pulled the trigger on. Few years on and it has been a great daily weekday wear, with my Daytona 116503 serving as my dress or weekend wear.
Thank you as always for such a great video and introspective look into the matter!
    Cheers, my friend!

I enjoy the watch "collection" and "why we collect" type videos more than other videos just measuring a random piece.
I, too, lusted after an Explorer years back when i got into watches. I bought a Hamilton Khaki auto 38mm on bracelet 3 yrs ago to substitute for the explorer I could in no way afford. The Hamilton being as great as it is, and Rolex being the company they have become, I honestly no longer desire the Explorer. The Khaki is what i wear most, and I couldn't be happier.

Social media discussions about watches have indeed become toxic. The hype is a significant issue, compounded by brands like Rolex prioritizing manufacturing exclusivity over horological innovation. Sadly, this shift is driven by the end of the "tool watch" era; watches have now become jewelry and status symbols. As someone currently wearing a highly utilitarian Vostok Amphibia that I've customized with a custom bezel and a durable leather strap, I appreciate the practicality of such timepieces. However, when considering practicality, today's ultimate "tool watch" is arguably a G-Shock or, at worst, an Apple Watch with its unimaginable complications. This relegates traditional watches to a different role, often as mere material for braggarts to flaunt.

Closest watch to a one watch is an explorer, however what if your exploring abroad then you will need an explorer 2, but what if you are given a mission to dive through a sewage grate to infiltrate a military base, then you need a diver. But then you contract a virus that turns you into a werewolf so you need a moon phase to protect your family, this watch also comes in handy when you are playing a high stakes poker game the next day as it slips under the cuff. But what if you need to fight some baddies after the game, you need something robust like an explorer.

Hearing the designer of the Rangemaster saying that the idea of "one watch to do it all" is a delusion is akin to the Pope saying there is no God at his Easter message. I kept looking at mine on my wrist and telling it "Shhh. He doesn't mean it. It's Rolex he's talking about, not you."

I've come to think that having one watch (or perhaps two including a dress watch as well as an everyday wearer) is pretty darned rational. However one would have to give the choice quite a bit of consideration in a mini-collection. An Explorer or Explorer II is always going to be a serious candidate for an everyday watch seeing that they are among the less hyped-up Rolex references.

There is a difference between what you want to see on your wrist, and what really belongs on your wrist. It does not mean that you are posing or faking if you choose to wear something else...that's fine. I love my Timex Ironman and my Casio DBC-611, but to be honest, the CA-53W McFly probably suits my personality better.
Wear what you like, like what you wear. Never mind the watch...if there's a problem, it's not on your wrist. It's in your head. So deal with it there--not by chasing an image.
