    Hi Guys,
    Here is one of the most under-appreciated Rolexes out there. It's nicely under the radar unlike the Rolex Submariner or the Rolex GMT Master II and Daytona. This Rolex Air King 116900 is a fun and colourful Rolex, it's nicely relaxed and unpretentious.
    A lot of people hate this Rolex, but I quite like it.
    This is a Week On The Wrist with the Rolex Air-King 116900.
    Let me know what you think of it.

      Bark and Jack owned one for a few months - the case size was PERFECT but could not get passed the non-lumed 3-6-9 markers.

    Being an aviation professional, I completely understand when people say it's face is too busy for them. But for us that need quick time reference, it's perfect. The added magnetic protection is also a huge plus. My favorite everyday watch, with my Breitling Ti squadron aerospace a close second.

    Just had my hands on one of these curious watches and being a Rolex fan here’s my positive critique.
    Pros: Wears really well on the wrists. Well, my wrist in particular. The case size and oyster bracelet are a perfect match. As per the Sub the brushed links look amazing and are just so less precious than mirror finished centre links. This guy will take a beating and still look great. You won’t be afraid of throwing it on your wrist and taking on the great outdoors. The extension link as per the Datejust is all you really need adjustment wise so on the fly changes are really nice. The weight of the watch head is nicely balanced and the profile is substantial but not bulky so will easily slip under cuffs and sleeves. The polished bezel
    will be a scratch magnet but gives the watch a nice pop and flash around the dial. The deep glossy black dial and Rolex green highlights of both text and seconds hand give a nice touch of in house colour. No date just set and forget. Solid proven workhouse movement. Overall it’s a watch that will grow on you and become a favourite in the rotation.
    Cons: although quirky the clash of numbers, colours, polished cardinals and yellow Rolex crown (a yellow corporate crown no less) can be a little jarring on the senses. This is not a subtle dial it’s a bit out there. But... it sort of grows on you. An interesting dial makes you take a second look. You love it. You hate it. You’re not sure. You love it again. No... it’s sh*t. No... nice again. You can’t decide. Your friends can’t decide. Your girlfriend has left you as you bought too many watches. But now she’s back. She likes wearing this one. Selfish. It causes problems in the relationship again. You fight over it. She knows Kung fu. You wear the bruises again. It doesn’t have the new gen movement. Does this matter it’s behind a metal cap anyway...
    In summary it’s weird how I agree with all of Adrian’s points. All of them. If you own Rolex watches you can’t help loving most of the familiar features. Then there’s the dial. It pulls you in and repels you in equal measure. But one think this watch isn’t and that’s boring. Sometimes watches can be just too perfect. Too honed. Less isn’t always more. Go check them out in the metal, it could change your mind. For me the jury is still out... but they are having a fun conversation.
    And here’s the kicker. Discontinued this thing will 🚀 to the skies. The Air King could soar.

    • @TheRunningManZ
      @TheRunningManZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd go for the Z Blue Milgauss over it, purely because I like the green glass and the electric blue with orange accents. Compared to the Milgauss the Airking is great value at the price, i've had one one in my hand and it's just not for me personally, I go like the green on the dial though.
      Not sure abt the Omega being so much better, it is better, but im pretty sure you could have an MRI with either the Milgauss or the Omega and be fine, the Omega is amagnetic but the milgauss is way more antimagnetic than it's name suggest because of the special hairspring it has reducing it even more than the iron cage. I think you wouldn't magnetise either of those no matter what you did really in real life or in a lab.
      The anti magnetic watch bracket is slowly kinda running out of any purpose as all watches are built to be anti magnetic in a way they weren't decades ago. I think it will be a side benefit of all watches and stop being a reason to buy a particular watch real soon, could see the Milgauss phased out again I guess.

  • @BetamaxBabe
    @BetamaxBabe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Ah, that's why it looks so odd - it's a car's speedometer on a bracelet! I like that this and the Milgauss are a bit out there. I'd happily wear both if I could afford them!

  • @life-onmars8223
    @life-onmars8223 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The dial is not a mess. It's a flieger based dial and makes complete sense to aviators. Yes it's different, but it's unique and not boring like the dull Explorers. Hats off to Rolex for a great watch and if you have seen one in the metal and have worn one then you to will be a convert - even Adrian has been drawn into its allure. Btw, as a point of fact, modern aircraft instruments provide a shower of magnetic fields.

    I love my Air King, IMHO the dial is beautiful, it is unique, color of the crown and Rolex corporate color in the second hand and prints. It shares the same case as Milgauss and the same movement of Submariner. This piece represents great value for money in a well executed package.

    Nice vid👌🏼
    Actually, the Air King is one of THE most storied and longest running pieces in the Rolex catalogue, first being produced in 1945, the same year as the DJ, almost a decade before the Sub, a decade before the GMT-Master and almost 20 years before the Cosmograph Daytona, and it is approaching its 75th year of uninterrupted production with the kicker being that Hans left a directive that as long as Rolex has a pulse and produces time pieces, there will be an Air King in the catalogue!!
    It’s start came as a four reference collection honoring the RAF Pilots who flew in the Battle of Britain, with the other three in the series being the Air-Giant, Air-Lion & the Air-Tiger.
    It is Rolex’s first true Pilot’s Watch and has a pedigree, lineage and DNA that a price tag can’t buy nor denote its significance. Their vintage examples up through the 1990’s were beautiful pieces with a more understated elegant dial and this was actually our fastest moving Rolly, though in full disclosure, price had a lot to do with that, lol.
    Granted, the Air King is often referred to as the “poor man’s Rolex,” and though their current color scheme and dial layout is not my favorite one, this is far from a “poor man’s Rolex.”
    It is an Icon and THE ONLY ROLEX that Hans requested to stay in the catalogue.
    That’s special👌🏼
    Continued Success🍻

      @RP Jake -- Very good. Indeed the Air-King's “start came as a four reference collection honoring the RAF Pilots”, and the inspiration for the model mentioned here comes from instruments in the Bloodhound Speed Car. That instrument, in turn and ironically, bares close resemblance to the Flieger Watches of WWII, particularly the B-uhr.

    Great video! I own this one since a year. Bought it from Clyve, the Wrangler. You are right when you point the fact that pics don't do justice to it. I owned several watches that were great on pics but not so much for real. Like girls I guess, some take the light better on photo. Well opposite result here with the AK. It's appealing and substantial in person. Secondly I don't get bored with it like I seem to with other watches. I will encourage the haters to try it on with an open mind. It works and remains a bargain...in modern Rolex times.

    I found this very interesting. I have owned an Explorer II for 24 years. It has doubled in value at least. I am considering trading it on the Air King. My son is an aspiring pilot. I have come near the end of a very succesful 30 plus year career in sales. So I like the humor of the "Air King" as a tribute to my lucky gift of persuasion. (The real key is qaulity listening, by the way). If my son inherits this watch the tribute to aviation will resonate with him. I love the fact that this model is not the one everybody else chooses.

    Love my 116900...a classic color combo...the dial is surprisingly user friend since the white gold hour markers usually fade out so one can see the printed second markers ...the faraday cage....super accurate movement....40mm size...
    The only tool watches left by rolex are the milgauss and airking....

    I’m glad to see this video...as a King Air pilot, there’s something that just makes sense in wanting an Air King. Plus, I was born in 69, so I dig that part of the reference (116900). Speaks to me, and I’m glad to see a full length review of it. Saw one and tried it on at the Rolex boutique in Beverly Hills (connected to Patek by the way), and I’m definitely smitten. I have an 8” wrist, so the bigger the better for me.
    Side note, I really love your style and approach to what we love and how you share it. I like anglage, and Cote de Geneve, but not being able to jump a stream and getting foot soaked? That’s exactly why my foot would be wet too...👍🏻 keep up the great work. As an IWC Spitfire Double Chrono owner, I’m jaded, but I REALLY dig the Air King, and I’m not ashamed to admit it! ✌🏻

    Glad you made the video mate. I love mine - very very unique and different. Living in nyc everyone and their mother has a typical sub, gmt, datejust etc. it took me a year to see someone on the street with another one and I love it. Threw mine on a nato strap so short of bumping into a watch geek, nobody knows what it is (which I like). Also note the collectability. This is the first watch in Rolex history to sport a green “Rolex” and gold (yellow) crown. Anyways.. great video and love the watch. Never selling mine

    I love this watch... it breaks the mould for sure. Yes, a Daytona, or a Pepsi, a whatever else is massively inflated price wise, is a Rolex through and through but this, this one has a certain something about it. Call it fun, funky, quirky... whatever. Its cool!

    The minute I saw this watch I got it in 2018, really liked it and also had a Batman... then I traded out the Batman for a Sub 114060 since the BLNR center links got scratched when I looked at the watch...all the while bad press was propagating over the Air King... was crazy crazy about the sub and then questioned why I have two stainless watches arguably similar given the sub was multi-function... so I sold the air-king for $100 less than I paid at the AD since there as ZERO demand (2019) for the AK... then the 114060 with the maxi case got on my nerves especially when it got labelled as The Flex Watch... so I got spooked on that while the Tudor GMT was the Bell of the Ball which reminded me of my Rolex GMT Coke I sold years go... so I sold the 114060 also in 2019 for fractionally more than the new AD price while everyone was screaming demand is HUGE... not. Moral of the story I should have kept the Air King all along... its always the quiet unique one whose more fun than dating the superstar. Good news is the Tudor GMT and I get along well - no ego on that watch. Nice video as always Adrian...

    Nice video Adrian! My wife saw the first part of the video and she said: ...”Who is that Guy? He’s funny!” 😃 ...and I said: “He’s a guy I watch on TH-cam that talks about watches and drinks coffee!” Nice setting and a good review of the Air-King! Cheers 🍻

    Ive always thought it was a quirky piece, but every time I see one in the flesh I get the hankering to add one to my collection ... based more and more on how rare they are in the wild. Nobody wears one .... that alone is reason enough to part with the cash.

      Darren Clarke I think they will be ... it’s that underdog syndrome where nobody wants one until they become sought after and then it’s the must have piece.
      For me, it’s pretty much as Adrian stated, when you get your hand on one it has “something” about it (fun in one respect) that makes it differ from that scroll past watch when you see it online.

    It's the Rolex that no one will recognize as a Rolex. Drilled lugs on this one would complement. The maxi case detracts IMO. But the nod to the instruments for that rocket car make the watch 90 % cooler and makes it make sense. It can't be too large if it's a pilot's watch.

    The Robin. I own the Air-King as well. And I agree that it is a very substantial watch on the wrist. It truly stands out. Everything to love about this watch. I love the green and yellow. I nick-named it “Robin” because it is a perfect compliment to my Batman.

    I wanted a black dial Rolex Air-King ever since I first saw one in 1981 at C.D. Peacock Jewelers of Chicago. 20 years later, on 9-7-2001, my wife bought me the watch of my dreams at Bucherer's flagship store in Lucerne, Switzerland the day before we flew back to the US a few days before 9-11. I have enjoyed my black dial Air-King for 20 years and it still is my favorite watch. The most understated and underrated Rolex never looks out of place as it whispers pure class.

    I believe the Air King has quite a significant following - the current model is a tribute to the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, Rolex has supplied some of the in- car instrumentation. The Air King was originally derived from watches like the Rolex Air Giant; Air Lion and Air Tiger created for the RAF Chaps during WW2 to replace their unreliable service issue watches. That’s quite a Heritage - furthermore I can’t think of any other Rolex Sports Model that can claim an equivalent history. Although it’s different and very Marmite - it was the original Military Aviation Pilot’s Watch created in 1945. Clearly I love my Air King equally as much as my GMT2- Daytona- Blue Sub - Ex2 Polar and SDDS Blue. Great video as ever. I look forward to the next one with great anticipation. Thanks.

    Totally quickly and I think the coolest rolex. Although I would like it numbered "05" rather than "5" on the dial to improve the symmetry. And I would have named it "speedking" rather than "airking" as an homage piece to the bloodhound speed attempt. Then I think it would have made more sense. But still, one I think will be a future collectable due to its rarity. Dont see many of these on peoples wrists, unlike subs and gmt.
    Great video btw. Loved the 'in the wild' shots. Keep up the good work!

    I've tried the AirKing and the Milgause Z-Blue on and was disappointed how the Milgause looked on my wrist. I was really excited about the Milgause in the press releases and loved the pictures. The AirKing however really popped out when I put it on wrist much to my surprise. It goes to show to always try on the watch before committing.

    Its such a beautiful watch, also many more people are discovering it and it gets increasingly harder to get it.
    I have a question, i know you make your own nato strips, but please put the 116900 on a green rubber band.
    it just suits the the green Rolex font on the dial so well.
    keep it up Adrian
