Donivan Morris One thing for sure, never grab the brakes 100% because it will cause the disc locked and you cant control your bike in that situation. The brakes are meant to slow you down by stopping the wheel (not the bike). Now the usage of front and rear brake is depend on your speed and track conditions. Lets assume that the track is aspalt in dry conditions. Your speed is 50km+, first you have to release the throttle, grab the front brakes 90% (your bike will slow down to +-20km) then followed by 90% rear brake, youre going to stop immediately. You can try the rear brake first but it will take longer and farther to stop.

Before I rode a motorcycle, I was so worried about this. After using a motorcycle for approximately 1.32 minutes.... it is literally the most common sense thing in the world lol
if you've ever ridden a bicycle it will come to you naturally, everyone does it subconsciously even if they don't know what counter steering actually is
@@timetraveler2yearsago758 well technically there's only a need to learn how to turn, not specifically counter steering. A big portion of people don't know what it is and still ride just fine because they do it without realizing since it's the most effective way of turning
Literally an hour past my bedtime and I'm watching this on TH-cam because I couldn't sleep because the concept of countersteering had me so psyched out. 😂 Thanks for the encouragement dude! And for calling me out lol
For those wondering how this works, its mainly because of inertia! So as Dave said when you are above 10-15mph and move to handlebars to the right, lets say, the bike actually does move the right (Very slightly) but your body stays relatively still. This causes your center of gravity to shift to the left side of the bike meaning the bike now wants to go left. I hope this makes it more clear about the science behind his demonstration, its very cool how it works!
I think the mechanism is a bit different. The offset of the Centre of gravity would not be enough to have a significant result. If the front wheel is turned right however, there is a gyroscopic effect that forces the bike to lean left, which is strong, but dependent on the speed the wheels spin at, hence it doesn’t work at slow speed. With your explanation, countersteering would be almost exactly as effective at slow speeds
So if your body in neutral way and want to turn left and you pull the left handlebar do you fall from it or its just going to go to the left, i still don't understand yet cause i have no bike yet anybody can explain it is it necessary or not because what i trying to understand and knowing is if you want to turn left or right on above 15mph can you still push it to the direction we want to go without the counter steer?
@@alchercraft7014 you would theoretically fall from your bike but you automatically countersteer without even noticing it, so no worries. Countersteering can also be done intentionally in order to quickly dodge something for example
You have to remember that, unlike a car, you're actually riding on an inverted pendulum. Imagine yourself balancing a broom with one hand. If you want to make it go left, you don't move your hand to the left. The tip would just be left behind and fall to the opposite side. So, you first have to make the broom *lean* left, and to do that you move your hand underneath it to the right,. Once it starts to fall to the opposite side, you "follow" it at the base. It's the same on a motorcycle. To go left, you first have to move the wheels underneath it to the right. You do that by steering to the right. That will make the bike "fall" to the left. Once it's falling, now you can "control" the fall by counteracting it with speed and steering as you go around the corner.
Easier to understand, but still confused. If you turn right and the bike leans left, then you have to quickly turn left the handlebars left to actually go left? So isn’t that just jerking the handle bars???
You know, this is one of the best presentations I’ve seen yet. I’ve tried to explain this to somebody who is just stared learning and it is very difficult to do. Thank you I’ll be using this in hopes it helps. Stay safe out there and keep the rubber side down!
This was surprisingly clear and coherent. My driving instructor was confusing the heck outta me and I was starting to feel like an idiot like I wasn’t somehow getting it, but I just realized that the guy is just lousy at explaining the concept of counter steering. Hopefully will improve more starting from tomorrow. Thank you. Subscribed
Yo I had the SAME ISSUE. I was told to Push on the handle bar and I said, "like towards the pavement?" "yes that's right" so I did. Couldn't swerve for nothing. Finally, accidently, figured it out and it changed my whole riding experience.
What most people get hung up on is overthinking it. We learn this as a kid while riding our bikes. Your brain does all this by second nature no one teaches you counter steering when you are barreling down a steep hill with chain brakes dodging pot holes, your body just does it. Counter steering is only great to be aware of because when people panic knowing this knowledge can be the difference between avoiding an accident or not.
Am 60 years old and have been. Ridding since 1974, never heard anything called countersteering, entill I heard about it on u-tube but now I watched your video I realize I do it without knowing it. this is the best video I've seen on counter steering thanks...
Push Left to go left, right to go right. You are spot on! Wish more people would learn this without argument. Big bikes especially can not be “leaned” to steer. Thanks so much!
This video is crystal clear - Instantly understood counter steering after watching. Thank you. Especially the part where you compared how fast counter steering responds compared to leaning.
This demo is so helpful for me. I watched a dozen of counter-steering videos and I understood the physics of it. But when I look at their handle bars, they are always pointing left to turn left pointing right to turn right. Your one finger demo cleared up my confusion - you INITIATE a turn by counter steering, but after that, the handle bar is still gonna point to the direction of the turn. Perfect demo. Thanks x 100.
I had counter steering explained to me this way: “If you want to turn your bike, you must tilt the bike. In order to tilt the bike off-centre you must counter steer. To turn left, push left. To turn right, push right.”. All was clear after that. Good vid. Leaning will never take the place of counter steering.
C. R. M. Yeah, once you get comfy pushing the bars to the direction that you need your bike to go, you can transition to tilting the bike by dipping your knee down for sharper corners like turns at intersections. Precise CS is esp needed for higher speed highway turns & curves. It's all a weird but fun concept. Thats why motorcycling is so much fun.
mumbo-jumbo science-rocket notes: counter steering works for two reasons: 1) push left bar forward, front wheel points right and rolls out from under bike's balance point, and bike falls left (that is, it leans left immediately), so the bike turns left because of the lean. this is the main reason counter steering works, accounting for 85% to 90% of the effect. 2) newton's second law (F=mA, force equals mass times acceleration) applied to rotation (or t=I.alpha, torque equals moment of inertia times angular acceleration). this torque effect is often cited first by us science rockets with our fancy-pants educations, but it is typically just a 10-15% effect. but, ahem, regardless all the effects and their relative importance, the theory is useless in a split-second decision (like in that bike-vs-firetruck video that made you jump out of your chair). you don't have time to think or work out the theory in a split second. what you need is muscle memory from shit-tons of practice. so get off your computer and go counter steer, counter steer, counter steer until you do it in your sleep. (finally, for the super geeky, in mumbo-jumbo science-rocket terminology, the 1st effect is called a holonomic constraint, i.e., the contact patch of the front tire is determined by its position relative to the pavement over time, assuming you don't skid while executing this maneuver.)
You know I've never really even thought about this because I just do it naturally. Been riding motorcycles for 50 years and have never thought about the physics of steering. Always came natural to me. After watching this I realized I do counter steer all the time. Great video and demonstration and explanation. Cheers
I got on a trike (converted bike) a few years back, never having ridden one before, after decades of bikes, didn't think about the fact that it wasn't remotely like riding a bike. Rode in a straight line across the lot we were in and had to get through a gate - I nearly smashed into the gate-post at 30MPH because I reflexively counter-steered ...... and counter-steered, and counter-steered for several seconds, my muscle-memory just didn't get why the f***ing thing was going the opposite way I wanted it to.
The Editor of Road Runner Magazine was seasoned motorcycle rider with decades worth of experience. Died getting on a curved on-ramp for the freeway while riding a motorcycle with a sidecar. It was a real shame. His name was Christian and was an incredibly nice guy.
Were you just going less than 20 km/h before this?? Countersteering is the ONLY way of steering a 2 wheeled vehicle. Countersteering isn't some sort of 'technique' to turn effectively, it's the ONLY way of turning. If you've been riding faster than a human sprinting speed, then you have used countersteering. I really don't understand how it's a mystery to some people.
I dont own a motorcycle, I still got a long way to go to save up, but still I watch so many TH-cam videos about motorcycles and yours was certainly the most easy to understand about counter steering. I watched a different one before yours and I was LOST. So thank you for this and for the simple explanation :)
If I knew this when I bought my bike I wouldnt have sold it after my second ride. I couldnt get comfortable leaning out and apparently it was because I was steering wrong. Thank you, might go sell my truck for another bike :)
Exactly. Wikipedia states this concept is often presented incorrectly, even in scientific literature. Dave puts it in a a way that's easy to understand, which is important for those trying to grasp the concept (as you say, made the topic approachable).
I didn't go to the Chris Farley school of sarcastic quotes, so that's not what I meant (and you fuckin' know it). Approachable is a term usually used before a noun (a person, place, etc.), and so I was unsure of it's usage as it applies to an instructional lesson, *_hence the quotes._*
Well you can, but most cyclists don't. I disagree with the OP regarding counter-steer. Counter-steer is very obvious if you keep the bike/motorcycle straight up with no lean to either side. No argument there. But as far as bike riders go, you enter a turn leaning and fraction of a second later turning.into the direction of the turn. There is zero counter steer.
If you are leaning and then steering into the turn you're doing it wrong. If you don't believe it, just try avoiding something in the road by steering quick and hard into the direction you're turning. You'll see the bike wants to stand up and go the wrong way.....At least try what he says, you'll see it works much better than what you're doing now.
Lehmann Peters it depends on the speed your traveling. Bicycles are the same as motorcycles. The front wheel does not slide sideways. If you turn the handlebars to the right what your doing besides pointing the front tire right, your shifting the neck of the frame left of center. That's what makes the bike lean. Not you physically leaning. You can push against the side of the neck while leaning which also forces the front tire the opposite way slightly causing the bike to lean. Otherwise leaning your weight to the left only makes the bike lean right without turning the wheel. COG will equalize when your going straight ahead.
I’m about to get my first bike so I’ve been reading, watching, and soaking up every bit of knowledge I can to help get started practicing, and hopefully learn things fairly quickly. The idea of counter steering was so confusing to me. I’ve seen several videos and read about it, but the videos were either underwhelming in explanation or just talk and no demonstration. Your video and demonstrations of both using normal steering at low speeds, and then using counter steering around 10-12 mph has really simplified counter steering in my brain. Now I can’t wait to get my bike, hit an open parking lot, and test out everything I’ve learned. Thank you!
"I never had any official training and I never ever heard of this counter steering, I'm fine so far without it" Hop on my bike and went around the block "Turns out I've been counter steering all along"
watched way too many videos on counter steering and your video is the only one that made my brain cells start firing off and connecting you explained and showed it so well, thank you
I couldn't agree more. If you ride a heavy machine (as I do) you simply must practice this. You can put that heavy machine (at speed) on a sixpence by countersteering. I've been riding motorbikes 40 years and only found out what this was in 2020.
Same really. I never heard of the term until recently. I just thought that there must be a reason bikers use their weight to do sharp turns and so it just naturally came to me lmao
I delivered Domino's pizza on a Honda CG125 for years (back in the nineties) and I just found out this even EXISTS. No idea if at some point I was also doing it subconsciously xD
Basically you push or very slight turn the inside bar to tip the bike in direction to initiate turn in. Then you apply constant pressure to maintain the turning with leaning. When you come out, you apply push to the outside bar to bring the bike upright. Easy...
Damn that sounds complicated. Thanks again Dave for another awesome video. No matter what kinda video you upload it always puts a smile on my face. When that notification comes up on my phone to say you have uploaded nothing else around me matters. Ride Safe. I saw that you put the mirror on the grom.
Lol it's simple, really. In fact, you probably did counter-steer in your life when you ride than you'd ever imagine. Counter steer is always in your subconcious when you learn to balance your bike.
@@Lehmann108 actually the effect is occurring at any speed. That's how you stabilise a bike at very very low speed When you feel a bicycle falling left at 1 mph you turn the bars left to countersteer the bike into standing up. Try doing this and turning the bars away from the way you're falling, you'll only fall faster. Sidenote If you never practiced riding a bicycle as slow as you can I highly reccomend it it's more fun than it sounds.
My method in instructing is this. Aim for a spot on the road maybe a manhole cover for example. At the last second AVOID it. Bump the bar right to go right. You will soon prove it is a lot quicker than leaning or trying to steer around like in a car.
I’m still a little bit confused about the counter steering but experiencing my own - I find turn left then lean right and eventually straighten the handle bar to go right, and the opposite for the other way. But love the video.
For those of you that think he's subconsciously pushing down, thus pulling the handlebar toward him? Go ahead and set out to prove that countersteering is a myth. I mean it HAS to be a myth right? Countersteering is counterintuitive! Obviously a small input won't wreck you so go ahead and try it while in the middle of your lane or in a lazy curve where you have all kinds of time to compensate for your input. ...and BAM! HOLY CRAP, IT WORKS! I don't know how it works, but it WORKS! That was my experience and it will be yours as well.
I've already passed the msf and I'm certain I do this naturally, but whenever I hear about it I never figure out if I should be pushing forward(literally turning the bars in the opposite direction) or straight down into the ground.
@@Eirehunter22 Its not called 90 degree steering its called countersteering because you PUSH the handlebars in the OPPOSITE direction that you want to go and you hold the pressure all the way thru the curve its the OPPOSITE / COUNTER to what you do in a car pushing down on the handlebar is the same as pushing down on the pegs, it does almost NOTHING to force the bike to lean at speed pushing the grip FORWARD is like power steering - just a little forward push leans the bike right over. dont argue - dont reply - GET on a real MOTORCYCLE AND TRY IT then come back and delete your post - its dangerously WRONG
Good demonstration. In truth counter steering works at all speeds is just really slow and unstable below ~10mph. A bike or motorbike is inherently unstable at low speeds and the gyroscopic force keeping the bike upright is so little that leaning or steering is just as effective and safer at crawling speeds. And it's something we all do to ride either. It's something we learn either as kids or adults without knowing it. We push and pull the bar as we lean because it makes us feel more balanced and our sense of balance just picks it up without our logical self knowing why or how. Its the reason that training wheels for bikes aren't suppose to touch the ground when the bike is upright. They are only there to keep the learner from leaning too far. Because if they touched the ground all the time we'd never pick this up. But learning how lets you learn how to use it for more then just keeping balanced and reacting faster with control in an emergency.
Actually counter steering is the only way to steer even at low speeds. Unless you are physically holding the bike upright with your feet touching the ground, you have to counter steer to turn the bike. Moving your body to lean the bike is extremely ineffective, like shown in the video, no matter what speed you are riding. Think about it, why would the bike ever lean left if you turn the handlebar left? You first turn right to make the bike lean left, and then adjust the handlebar left to stop further leaning.
This helped me so much, I picked up a dirtbike and have never ridden a bike in my life other than a pedal bike, and when people were explaining to me how if you turn left your going to go right, I thought they were insane, I ride atv's which turn normal, you turn to the left your going left no-matter the speed, this video is great, thank you
Awesome! I never even noticed I already did this. I thought I was just leaning in but yeah, pushing the bars in opposite direction to steer sharply. Maybe it's best to not think about it too much now haha. Thanks for the explanation.
Countersteering is simple. When the bars are turned right, it causes the contact patches to move out from underneath you to the right, causing you to lean left.
As someone who rode 2 wheels as far as I can remember I am somewhat confused as to why this needs to be said because my whole life this came intuitively.
Dude this has absolutely broken my brain Ive been racing MX since I was 12 and had a 1200 commuter bike for 3 years. But I have absolutely no idea what they mean... I've been just fine all along and I've done some pretty fast sh*t...
This video is aimed a new riders who don't have the confidence to make the bike do want they want it to do. I have been riding 20 years and on occasion that corner is a little tighter than I first thought, understanding in those situations that a little more pressure on the counter steer will get the bike on the right line is priceless and stop you landing in a hedge or into an oncoming car. Stop critising this video, if you are an experienced rider, then this video is not for you, it is for new riders to understand the theory and gain trust in doing what initially may not feel natural.

The analogy of pushing the left bar, rather than turning the bars right to go left is so helpful. I dont even ride yet, but I appreciate this. Thanks.
Yes and if I told you I could walk on water would you believe me?
How is this different to normal steering?
Turn handlebar right - go right.
Left - left.
No?
@@alchercraft7014 you would theoretically fall from your bike but you automatically countersteer without even noticing it, so no worries. Countersteering can also be done intentionally in order to quickly dodge something for example
@@semenivanoff8615 no, countersteering is turn handlebar right, go left
Best layman's explanation that I have come across.
excellent analogy
This actually makes it easier to understand. Thank you for that!
You fuckin science rocket
Easier to understand, but still confused. If you turn right and the bike leans left, then you have to quickly turn left the handlebars left to actually go left? So isn’t that just jerking the handle bars???
As the great Doc Hudson once said "Turn Right to go Left!".

Watched quite a few of these and this is hands down the best video on counter steering I've seen. Thanks

This is the best comment on counter steering here!
This is the absolute best video and explanation of counter steering on TH-cam so thank you from a new rider.
You are the best.
100% I am starting the theory part of my license and this is by far the best video for counter steering.
I love the simple way you explained this. Makes it so much easier to understand if you’ve never done it
I had counter steering explained to me this way: “If you want to turn your bike, you must tilt the bike.
Thats why motorcycling is so much fun.
mumbo-jumbo science-rocket notes: counter steering works for two reasons:
1) push left bar forward, front wheel points right and rolls out from under bike's balance point, and bike falls left (that is, it leans left immediately), so the bike turns left because of the lean. this is the main reason counter steering works, accounting for 85% to 90% of the effect.

Push left, go left is actually initially due to gyroscopic precession....

i’ve been through so many videos about countersteering and this is by far the most helpful. Thank you!
Died getting on a curved on-ramp for
the freeway while riding a motorcycle with a sidecar. It was a real shame. His name was Christian and was an incredibly nice guy.
I think because of the triangulation of the balance isn't the same as when just the balance of two wheels
Just tried this today. HOLY HELL. It feels so good. I feel like my cornering angle just doubled.
@@AQHackAQ I think you can normal steer until 30-40kmph?
This needs to be DRILLED into new riders, and practically NEVER is.
I dont own a motorcycle, I still got a long way to go to save up, but still I watch so many TH-cam videos about motorcycles and yours was certainly the most easy to understand about counter steering. I watched a different one before yours and I was LOST. So thank you for this and for the simple explanation :)

Very informative, yet "approachable" for those learning!
Exactly. Wikipedia states this concept is often presented incorrectly, even in scientific literature. Dave puts it in a a way that's easy to understand, which is important for those trying to grasp the concept (as you say, made the topic approachable).
So it wasn't _actually_ approachable, hence the quotes?
I didn't go to the Chris Farley school of sarcastic quotes, so that's not what I meant (and you fuckin' know it). Approachable is a term usually used before a noun (a person, place, etc.), and so I was unsure of it's usage as it applies to an instructional lesson, *_hence the quotes._*
Maxx Fordham Quotes means he quoted, quotes don't mean sarcasm. Life isn't a Seinfield episode.

You probably used countersteering on bicycle but you didn't noticed that.
Yep, it's the same effect when you're going really fast on a bicycle, but most people don't realize it.
Young0Kuleczka / yeah thats it
I’m about to get my first bike so I’ve been reading, watching, and soaking up every bit of knowledge I can to help get started practicing, and hopefully learn things fairly quickly. Thank you!
I finally understood. Thanks man!

Basically you push or very slight turn the inside bar to tip the bike in direction to initiate turn in. Then you apply constant pressure to maintain the turning with leaning. When you come out, you apply push to the outside bar to bring the bike upright. Easy...

You literally just slightly turn you bars and lean
Lol it's simple, really. In fact, you probably did counter-steer in your life when you ride than you'd ever imagine. Counter steer is always in your subconcious when you learn to balance your bike.
DIRECT TO THE POINT! Nice explanation, very clear explanation!💯
It's most understandable video on TH-cam regards counter steering, and I've seen a few. Thanks Dave
Same concept on a bicycle at 10mph or higher... I’ve known this since 6 grade lol
Right, but you have to be traveling at least 15 mph. Also most bike riders induce a turn through leaning.
@@Lehmann108 actually the effect is occurring at any speed.
That's how you stabilise a bike at very very low speed
When you feel a bicycle falling left at 1 mph you turn the bars left to countersteer the bike into standing up.

Finally some one with question that make sense.
@@Eirehunter22
Its not called 90 degree steering
its called countersteering
because you PUSH the handlebars in the OPPOSITE direction that you want to go
and you hold the pressure all the way thru the curve
its the OPPOSITE / COUNTER to what you do in a car
pushing down on the handlebar is the same as pushing down on the pegs, it does almost NOTHING to force the bike to lean at speed
pushing the grip FORWARD is like power steering - just a little forward push leans the bike right over.
dont argue - dont reply - GET on a real MOTORCYCLE AND TRY IT
then come back and delete your post - its dangerously WRONG
This is the best example of countersteering in the entire youtube
No, its not close. Counter-steering is the only way to steer a bike. If he had given full gas, the bike would turn the other way, on the slow turns.
So satisfying how good your mic is on that bike. I don’t even ride motorcycles, and I stayed for the whole thing. Nice video!

I have been riding 20 years and on occasion that corner is a little tighter than I first thought, understanding in those situations that a little more pressure on the counter steer will get the bike on the right line is priceless and stop you landing in a hedge or into an oncoming car.
