Finally - an explanation that actually makes sense.
Nobody, including instructors, have been able to explain countersteering in a way that suggests they understand how it works - they all just sound confused themselves.
    Thanks.

And if one is really "squimish", just ride a bicycle, two wheeled vehicles ( with rounded patched tires to be exact) can only be steered by leaning, you just feel its direct steering but direct steering does not work at all, try as you may on a two wheeled vehicle :D , it leans for gosh darn reason, something to do with its tires and the fact it only has two wheel :D Physics is magic

Excellent explanation of counter steering. Most of the time, you just hear, "You have to counter steer," but what does that mean? It's the "...brief period when we apply the force on the handle bars to change the lean angle..." Your explanation of initiating lean is the easiest for most people to grasp, and is simple - initiate lean opposite the turn direction so that the bike can turn into the direction desired. Plus, you are not leaning, only the bike is. You are actually staying upright, allowing the bike to lean beneath you.

    • @daszieher
      @daszieher ปีที่แล้ว +2

the "funny" thing is that "you" and the "bike" form a shape-shifting vehicle with a moving centre of mass. "pressing" the bike into the turn (i.e. staying upright while the bike leans) is more related to comfort and oversight than to physics.
although keeping the torso largely in one space lowers the moment of inertia around the roll axis facilitating quicker leaning at slower speeds.

9:23 This is the core summary of the entire topic! Countersteer is any change of handlebar direction that is opposite to lean angle. Thanks for separating the leaning from turning!
We can even expand the understanding. When we are done turning, we briefly turn the handlebar ‘more inside’ to make the bike stand up. It’s also the same countersteering.
We better call it “the principle of countersteer” instead of treating it like some special technique. All self-balancing objects must move its lower body outside in order to lean inside. All bikes change the lean angle by the principle of countersteer. Turn right to lean left, not go left.

The instructor said to basically push into the steering the way you want to turn- so push on the left handlebar to turn left, which does the same thing, but I didn't understand the physics or what was happening. I didn't know we actually wanted to turn the wheel slightly the other direction and I was using bodyweight as well. thanks for clearing up everything!!

Brilliant video - even better than a couple of other great videos on TH-cam, and that is saying something. What is really tough for me is that I have already learned this stuff subconsciously for years, and it scares me to start just pushing handlebars just to see what happens! Why bother then? is a good question. Answer is I now live in a region with very much more challenging and mountainous terrain, and it has given me a shock as to how much more skills I need to not overcook bends or come off on wet corners and gravelly roads - if I am ever to keep up with traffic that is. Going deeper has undermined my confidence at the moment - like I say I have done the easier bends for many years, or just gone very slow for the occasional one - but I think in the end practice and understanding what I am doing will make me a much better and safer rider. Shame I can't do rider courses, but if you can ride to one safely at traffic speed from where I live, by then you will pass with flying colours.

It is built into every single steering system ever made. Bicycles, cars, office chairs and baby trolleys. With different rake angles you achieve the different steering effects that are explained so well in this video.

Great channel!! Many YT channels talk about bikes, some (often American) talk about 'beginners'bikes referring to 400ccs a 'small' bikes which is really rediculous. 400ccs already are VERY powerful. They recommend these huge bikes without giving any technique tips and exercises. Just buy the thing and figure it out. If you survive the first year. Your channel is obligatory viewing for all bikers, especially beginners. I always recommend learning the basics on a 50cc. Anyway, great channel!

This is so unbelievably well explained.
I was sitting here under the impression that riders HOLD their handle bars through the entire corner, and physically turn it throughout the entire corner, sort of "manhandling it". This explains why i kept falling over in my 1st lesson (where the instructor didnt explain anything to me, at all).
I kept trying to hold onto the handle bars like if it was a steering wheel, of course the front wheel then couldnt auto-correct at all.

BRILLIANT explanation of how counter steering works, how a bike can move forward on its own, how body weight plays a role and how to comfortably position yourself not keeping the front wheel too tight so it can correct itself. And also a brilliant explanation of slow speed turning which should really help someone doing a test. I knew counter steering worked but before watching this my mind was not convinced. But now since this video explains the science of it I have no doubts about it.
Thankyou so much, you have the gift of a great talent man.

Thank you so much for this and all of your other videos! I'm a new baby biker and I'm still taking my driving courses, Just got on manual gear and got a bit of confidence drop when I dropped it for the firs time a few days ago... you explain things very well! Makes me much more comfortable to hit the bikies again ♥

You're the first person to explain countersteering in a way that I could understand. I'm not yet a motorcyclist but I'm not dumb either. Thank you very much. Cheers.

.... that's why countersteering is always a part of any good motorcycle course. My courses are also good by the way....
The way you narrate these videos are very interesting

Thanks the best explanation and demonstration of the process I’ve seen. Been riding push bikes since I was able to walk and motorcycle for 30+ years. I think it’s always been there just no real understanding, awesome

This is the best video about countersteering I have seen so far. I managed to flip my bike quickly without fear of falling after watching your video.

I think the only reason this is sooo much debated - and indeed argued - is that countersteering is so intuitive. My old granny used it on her bicycle and I used it on my Puch Dakota in the 60s - still neither of us knew shit about the steering principles. I have seldom or never seen such a good explanation as Andrey's.

Very interesting. When I was riding (50 years ago) I naver heard of countersteering, it was just a technique I discovered for myself, as a means (I thought) of initiating a turn a bit more quickly. Never knew a thing about the theory and principles. It was just doing what comes naturally. Wish I'd had your videos then. But the internet was undreamt of then.

I first found out about this when I was around 10. Being Dutch, I always cycled to school and I wondered why it was impossible to move away from the curb when you went too close so your front tire was scraping the curb
