Heres something you may find interesting. :)
The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird ''turkey''......
.....but the name of the bird does have a connection with the name of my country, let me explain. :)
Name of my country has always been Türkiye, it's been known as such since around the 1200's.
The name it self has a suffix, '' -iye '', that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means 'land of/belonging to',
just like the Latin suffix of '' -ia '', which exists in such country names like
    Austr-ia, Austral-ia, Latv-ia, Roman-ia etc etc again meaning 'land of/belonging to'.
Many would remember the country Czechoslovak-ia which changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia).
The Latin suffix -ia probably originates from Turkish -iye as Turkish is much older, ancient Turkish been over ten thousand years old.
Spelled in different languages in different ways to phonetically resemble '' Türkiye ''
    we got various spellings like;
    Turquía (in Spanish),
    Turchia (in Italian),
    Turquie (in French)
    Turkei (in Germn) and
    Turkey (in English)
all trying to resemble the pronounciation of ''Turk-ia'' thus Turkiye.
Mind you this was way before the animal we currently know as 'turkey'' was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas. The bird was first sent to europe from north americas in the year 1519, so up until that point there was no bird named 'turkey'....
...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird ''Turkey Fowl'' meaning ''Turkish Chicken''.....
....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc.
In time you don't get to call the Greek Harehound as simply as ''Greek''; or you don't call the British Terrier as ''British''; or the German Shepherd as ''German'', but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just ''Turkey'' and later ''turkey'', and has been going on for hundreds of years.
Now in modern times, this is causing confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their own country on the map, this ''confusion over the naming'' needed to be corrected.
So my country decided to rectify this confusion that has been going on for so long and corrected the name to Türkiye, which it always was. Basically we didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : )
So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : )
    Best wishes. ;)

I'm glad Tirana is ranked quite higher, beating some other Balkan capitals. Who could have thought? Imagine 20 years ago, the city was on its knees, a total rubbish, coming out from a deep isolation followed by a rambunctious " free for all, free for everybody"with not a single infrastructure in place and I was happy to run away from there....Now, the city is getting better year after year, and you need to see it 4-5 years later when some of the projects in place are done. I have been to seven Balkan capitals so far, and my ranking would be:
    1. Belgrade: ZNAM ZA JEDAN GRAD ZOVE SE BEOGRAD! It does not offer as much as let's say Sarajevo in terms of sightseeing, but Belgrade certainly excels on the experience side. It might be one of the most vibrant cities one can visit. Nightlife, cultural scene, history... Belgrade offers all.
    2. Ljubljana: I really think the weather makes the difference. It is one of the most picturesque and lovely capital cities in Europe, especially in late spring-early summer. The one reason why I rank Ljubljana so high is the day trip opportunities. While Ljubljana itself can be visited in its entirety in a day, it is a great hub for day trips. It is quite easy to take public buses to do day trips to Piran, Bled, Bohinj etc. and then enjoy the evening hanging out in all the pubs and cafes on the Ljubljanica river.
    3. Sarajevo: It is one of the most unique cities in Europe for sure. A city that should be absolutely visited. However, this is a city where the traumas of war and genocide are still palpable. For people familiar with the history, visiting Sarajevo becomes a quite gloomy and emotionally heavy experience.
    4. Tirana: I agree with you. On the uglier side, not much to do as a tourist, but quite vibrant and pleasant.
    5. Zagreb: I mostly agree with your points. It simply punches below its weight compared to the other Balkan capitals.
    6. Skopje: It used to be one of the major cities of Ottoman Europe. Nowadays, it is far from its former charm. First, the earthquake in 1963 destroyed a significant part of the city, and then the corrupt Gruevski regime spent billions of dollars to build ugly monstrosities in the middle of the city centre. What could be one of the most charming capital cities turned into one of the ugliest. Only worth visiting for a day.
    7. Podgorica: There's nearly nothing to see or do. It is a boring government town built mostly during the communist era.
The first 3 are great destinations, next 2 would get a passing grade, unfortunately the bottom 2 are not even in competition with the others.
One small note: Most buses travelling from Bosnia/Croatia direction pass through the Bay of Kotor even if they have Podgorica as the final destination. So, it is not necessary to use it even as a transit point, you can just get off at Herceg Novi, Kotor or Budva.

Honestly as a Croat that lives in Dalmatia I must agree that Zagreb sucks. I've been to Zagreb a few times and every time its depressing as hell. I love the architecture I have to give it that but as a capital of a European country it really isn't that good. Dalmatia is way more exciting and beautiful, nature is best on islands and my favourite cities are Šibenik, Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar

As a Croat from Slavonia (eastern continental Croatia), someone who's impartial in this subject (Split-Zagreb rivalry) I would ALWAYS in a split moment choose Zagreb over Split to be much, much more interesting, and also more beautiful than Split!
Yes, there's Diocletians palace in Split and Adeiatic sea but other than that and the Riva promenade Split doesn't offer too much in comparison to much larger, more elegant, sophisticated and more interesting Zagreb that has to offer huge number of things if someone actually prepare before!
And as I can see so many tourists only tend to see smallest fraction of Zagreb that even doesn't include major part of the historical center let alone many other cool places!

People were really kind and generous. Just be aware that in Bosnia you may see a few child beggars coming up to restaurants etc and some more overt signs of poverty (compared with Montenegro which is in places like Kotor/Budva are just tourist playgrouns for wealthier people) - but you get beggars all over Europe (Italy, France, Greece etc). As Croat and person from Zagreb think that my city should be in top 5. and also our good friend Ljubljana. Zagreb has Medvednica mountain really close to city which is nature park and you can get to the top with cable car, also pretty good night life and some interesting museums as Museum of broken relationships, Technical museum, Museum of hangover and so on. Zagreb had for many years the best Christmas market in Europe, just to let you know. I think you haven't explore enough of the city, sorry, innit?! Belgrade is a good city for a night life, without any doubt, but Zagreb has a way better historical attractions, public transportation, cleaner city and so on.
