    The song provides a contrast, backdrop, and origin point for the final song, "The Love We've Found", as it makes no sense without "When Love Is Gone". Lyrically speaking, "I wish you well, but I must leave you now alone" is the counterpart to "The love we've found, we'll carry with us so we're never quite alone." For me, it belongs there, as that is how I've always known the movie, even if I did not appreciate it once upon a time.

    This movie came out two years before I was born and our family tradition as I grew up was to play it while we decorated the Christmas tree every year. We had the DVD with “When Love Is Gone” and I loved this song. Even when I was a kid I adored it and I’ve known all the words since I was in elementary school. It was just last year I learned this wasn’t the version most people saw and I was stunned. It’s beautiful, emotional, and it plays such an important roll in the story. Kinda surprised you didn't do a whole section on the loss of Richard Hunt. Henson's death overshadowed his, but Hunt was Scooter, Janice, Sweetums and Beaker. Not only that, Henson and Hunt were the original Statler and Waldorf, so both had to be recast for Christmas Carol.

  • @matthewbrown2037
    @matthewbrown2037 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I always thought this version was the best version of a Christmas Carol, as it's so well done and Michael Caine is great as Scrooge. Although it opens with the sad reminder that Jim Henson was no longer with us, I think it shows that his talent obviously rubbed off on his Son, and I'm sure Jim would have been proud. I have fond memories of sitting down on a, I think, Saturday evening to watch the Muppet Show each week, and always loved the Great Muppet Caper movie too, especially as it was set in my home country. The Muppets are among the best film/tv creations of all time. It's just a shame their genius creator was taken far too soon, but what a legacy to leave.

    I was ten when this movie first came out... I watch it every Christmas so my exhausted, bitter, retail working heart, can feel happy at Christmas. And it still makes me cry a bit. Every time I see it, and I've been watching it for almost 30 years at this point. If you closely watch the old 1951 (I think) version starring Alistar Sim, you can see how much Michael Caine got from that masterful performance (the scene at the end where Scrooge wakes up in particular... That bit with him fussing over his hair in the mirror is right out of Sim's performance). However, the Muppet version reaches across into something more tender. It crosses the lines of class that the Sim verison didn't, and the musical numbers are so good, and so heartfelt without being contrived.
    It will always hold a special place in my heart, and not just because a smart-ass teenage me got out of trouble once in high school by tying this movie into the group project I was goofing off from, and instead was telling my peers about how they should watch the Muppet Christmas Carol.

    I LOVE “Belle’s Song”…. It’s so touching, and it makes sense as to *WHY* Scrooge doesn’t want to ‘revisit’ that particular memory (“Oh, *please* do not show me *that* Christmas…….) & make sense as to why (poor) Rizzo is crying his eyes out……. But another favourite scene is with the Ghost of Christmas present………when Scrooge says to him “Aren’t you a little absent minded Spirit?” to which is replied to with “Hahaha, No! I’m a ‘*LARGE* absent minded Spirit”…… such a great line

    This film is also crammed full of really good music that would steal any Broadway show.
    Incidentally Michael Caine was desperate to work with the muppets. He had missed out on guesting on the TV series in the 70s as he was living as a tax exile in the US at the time. Peter Sellers and then Sylvester Stallone had told him it was great fun and that he'd be mad to turn it down if he got the opportunity to be on the show so it was something he had deeply regretted. Fast forward many years and Caine is now back living in the UK again and this was the first muppet film made in a few years so he was pretty desperate to get a second chance, which might explain why he turned in such a great performance.

    I was 7 years old when this came out and I remember seeing it and absolutely LOVING it! This is the ONLY other musical take on the "Christmas Carol" and "Scrooge" is tied with this movie because of that. I do agree that Mr. Caine's performance was wonderful. Also tied with Albert Finney's performance in "Scrooge". I liked the fact that Finney was actually still quite young and that when doing scenes from Christmas past, he was age appropriate. The makeup they put on him to make him look older was awesome! So if anyone loves musicals as much I do, check out "Scrooge". I did find that when they released the movie on VHS they put the musical number in it. I loved "When Love is Gone". Even as a small child I had a pretty good understanding of what the song was about and I totally feel that it added more to the movie. But, then again I was also watching horror movies at age 3 so my understanding of thing were already pretty developed. Thank you Minty for reviewing this wonderful movie that is so cherished and beloved by so many people. This is one of my all time favorite holiday movies and I can honestly recite the whole darn movie in my sleep I've watched it that much. Merry Christmas to all and to all Happy Holidays!

    This is by far my favorite movie to watch at Christmas time! It has a beautiful blend of comedy and drama. Michael Caine was, by far, the best choice for Scrooge and his approach to his role was spot on for his character! Can you please do one on The Gods Must Be Crazy?

    I think the reason this one is my favorite despite seeing so many other renditions is because of Michael Cain. He isn't over the top and it makes a great contrast to the muppets who are over the top. I mean could you manage to see him going over the top and seeing a goofy scrooge. Also the scene with belle needs to be in the movie. I watched it as a kid and even then understood why it was important. Without it you can't really grasp how important Belle was to Scrooge. You only see them meet and then break up. There was no build up. So her singing it ties in the stuff you never see.

    This is my favorite version. I am in my 60's and have seen all the other versions, even the Patrick Stewart one. I completely agree that Caine's performance was spot on. But I also love the music and artistry of the Muppet creations. 'Nuff said. And the fact Claire wasn't in the finale just means she was in the kitchen! Like I always am!

    Great video! You summed up my own feelings perfectly! But just to answer your question; According the the behind-the-scenes book "No Strings Attached", no, they did not reuse the ghost-puppet for anything. She was built exclusively for this production, and was quickly disposed of afterwards because she had to suspended in a tank of mineral-oil for filming, and the puppet was soaked through. But here's a positive; as someone who has read the OG book, the Muppet versions of the three ghosts are STILL the most accurate depictions of these characters on screen!

    Also Mark, deceased people DO visit in dreams. It's a way of saying goodbye to a lot of people who never got to say it. Often people will notice that when they dream of a family member or friend who has died, is that it's not like any other dream they usually have. My dreams are really weird where I cannot even describe them later on, but when I dream of those who have passed on, it's like real life, as the conversation is pretty normal, as if it's real and you don't know you are dreaming. There is always a sense of strangeness after those dreams when you get to meet those who have passed - nothing like the normal dreams you may have...

    • @granadosvm
      @granadosvm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If those dreams are our own brains playing trick on us or they are real visits, is a matter of debate, but I have a story about it.
      When I was a kid, my father was really strong (for a period of time he owned a moving truck and he would carry things as heavy as a refrigerator up the stairs), and a little chubby, he never got cold, or at least, he never admitted needing a coat or a jacket. In old age, he got sick and he weakened with time, became very slim, always cold. One day he went to the hospital and stayed overnight for a routine procedure, nothing that have not happened before, so I didn't think anything about it when I went home and got to sleep. I saw him in a vivid dream, young, chubby, in my dream he was smiling and outside, on a green field in the Sun, where I could feel the warmth, almost posing how well he felt. I woke up from that dream, knowing he was well again, and I didn't go back to sleep, I sat in bed to wait for the call, which came 14 minutes after I woke up from the dream. My father had passed away less than an hour before.

    If I could only watch one movie for the rest of my life, I would choose Muppet Christmas Carol. It has everything 🙂
    I also think Michael Caine's playing it straight is a big part of what makes the movie. It maintains its "Christmas Carol"-ness because he does.

    George C. Scott #2 for classic adaptations.)

    Thank you, Minty for that review. This movie has always been a favorite Christmas movie of mine. I will be dating myself when I say I saw the premiere of 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and I try to watch it every year.
    I read a couple days ago that Cain said that he read his part in a 'Serious as a heart attack' manner. Other things you mention in this video make it even more interesting.
    ...Thanks again, Minty....Merry Christmas from your #1 Moline, Michigan fan.

    Muppets is my favorite version of a Christmas Carol, too, and just like you, I like the most for Caine's perfect representation of Ebeneezer Scrooge. Even if Caine starred in a version without Muppets, it would have been just as good. What you taught me about Michael Caine's role as Ebeneezer Scrooge now makes perfect sense on why I love this version of a Christmas Carol so much!

    That song is the single most important song in the movie! It's the whole point where we learn why scrooge is scrooge. I was mad when I watched this on Disney Plus and the song was missing. Even when I was younger I got that the movie needs the song, it's the emotional anchor for the whole film and makes you really want Scrooge to change.
