I can't believe this is 50 years old. I would watch this film countlessly on video and dvd. Gene was perfect as Willy Wonka. The songs and set design has aged like fine wine. Its nice to see that he loved working on it and that he sheds a tear when fans talked to him about it.
Peter Ostrum, who played Charlie, never acted again. His parents took his salary from the movie and created his college fund, which he used to become a veterinarian. Occasionally he'd be asked to speak about his experience in the movie, and would use it to educate children about caring for their pets.
When I heard what became of him after filming the movie I thought that it was wise of him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine away from show business. And that was wise of his parents to put away his earnings for college. From what I've seen in his interviews he seems to be happy in his life.

You've got the candy store sequence wrong. The candy man is throwing candy at the kids who are reaching greedily as if they are entitled to it. He shows more personal attention and concern for Charlie. Asking for payment is a test of his honesty which he passes. The candyman gives Charlie the final ticket on purpose. Wonka expected him to win from the beginning and says so near the end.

I will never forget the scene where Wonka berated Charlie in his office. Yes Wonka was being harsh but he was in the right when he pointed out that Charlie and Grandpa Joe stolen the fizzy lifting drinks. Thereby violating their part of the contract. I believe the reason that Charlie decided to give Wonka back the gobstopper instead of listening to his grandfather was because he knew that Wonka was right. And ruining Wonka was not worth it.

Another few "Did you know"'s: The young actress Julie Dawn Cole who played Veruca Salt doesn't like Chocolate. she explained it herself in a reunion documentary, In the scene in the big chocolate river room where she had to dip into and taste chocolate sauce, she was trying very hard to get as little as possible on her tongue, and she's visibly flinching from it. Cole and actress Denise Nickerson both thought Peter Ostrum [Charlie] was a little hottie, and they took turns flirting with him. Michael Bollner [Agustus Gloop] didn't speak a word of english, and did all his lines phonetically. The other children tried to make him comfortable, but it was still pretty lonely for him, and it was a bit of a relief for him that Agustus was the first to leave.

My favourite movie of all time, always has been and always will be. I met Roald Dahl in the 70’s he read some of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to us in the local library, it was a magical experience and something I will always remember😬
I don't know, man. He definitely hard-balled Charlie after giving out a lot of candy. He didn't have to do him like that. A Wonka bar doesn't even cost that much.
it's also not like he had a sign out front saying "No Poor Kids". Charlie was watching everything play out through the window. Their was nothing stopping him from going inside once he saw free candy being given out. The second scene at the candy shop is different. He's probably gotten more business in the past month than he had in his store's entire history, but now he decides to start getting stingey?
I don’t say he is a jerk. That’s part where he hits the little girl by opening the counter door, that was a on set accident that was not part of the script. Yeah, some people just don't understand that some movies are _complete,_ with nothing left hanging and needing continuation or clarification. But you know Hollywood: "We've got to keep this cash cow alive," seems to apply all too often.
@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 except, it wouldnt be called that...because the guy who we all think of as slugworth, wasnt actually slugworth, he was wonkas only non oompa loompa employee
Slugworth was in the book, only cited as a competitor, with his sluworth sizzler chocolate bar. He wasn’t a character that interacted with any of the main characters during the story though. He was mentioned along with other candy competitors who would try to steal Wonka’s ideas, and so Wonka shut down for a while
I was amazingly lucky and honored to meet all five of the kids, 10 years ago in Chicago, at Wizard World ComiCon. It was the first time all five of them were together since shooting the movie. All five of them were incredibly friendly and kind, but Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen went above and beyond, engaging me in conversation...not just shaking hands, saying hello and signing an autograph. One of my best friends is beyond words obsessed with Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, so I got an 8X10 of the kids and Gene Wilder standing on the steps inside the Chocolate Room and had them sign it to her for her birthday and Christmas present and Julie and Paris were asking me questions about her and how long we've been friends and giving me kudos for getting her the picture since she couldn't be there herself. Till the day I leave this blue marble, I'll always consider myself every kind of lucky that I got to actually meet all five of them, especially and sadly now that Denise Nickerson isn't with us anymore (I did get to tell her how much of a Dark Shadows fan I am. I use to watch it with my Mom when I was a kid.). We are the makers of the music and we are the dreamers of the dreams.
Julie Dawn Nicole (Veruca Salt) and Paris Themmen (Mike Teevee) were going to Alamo Drafthouses around the country, and maybe world i dont remember, doing like a sing along with the movie. The last one before covid Peter Ostrum came and I am now honored to say I met thee Charlie Bucket
Also, it's worth noting all the parodies and references over the years, my favorite being the Slurm factory episode of "Futurama." "Grunka Lunka dunkety dasis, The secret of Slurm's on a need-to-know basis"
@@eclipsehorse8693 it's been done to death, but the scene where Peter runs home to the "golden ticket" music and then falls and scrapes his knee always makes me laugh.

Though that would have made for an interesting film... *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory* Select children have won a contest to inherit a chocolate factory deep in the heart of South-Eastern Asia from an insane French man... little do they know, but NVA troops are working their way to the factory. Who will survive, and what will be left of them?
The funny thing about mentioning "Willy Wonka" in the title is that the character doesn't make an appearance until just under halfway through the film.
Grandpa Joe Benefits cheat, 20 years bed ridden watching his family struggle hard times and sponging from them, and yet is up and dancing at the prospect of a day out with Charlie.
Not to mention that he encouraged Charlie to steal the fizzy lifting drinks after Wonka told everyone no. And he also encouraged Charlie to give Slugworth the gobstopper to spite Wonka!
I don't usually comment but you are one of the only channels I am subscribe to and I love your content. I'm rooting for you minty. I love this movie and I love your insight into the meaning. Also you have a bad ass collection. 😆
I heard that the reason they changed the name was because the Vietnam War was going on and they didn't want to have the film associated with the enemy which had been nicknamed Charlie. I am glad you mentioned Sammy Davis Jr. though, because that became his signature song and he even sang a bar in the Cannonball Run.
"Don't care how. I want it NOW!" Verruca Salt is the most bad-ass of the kids. She's so awesome, she was the only kid to have their own song. Not even Charlie got his own song. The only song Charlie gets is a depressing "life sucks kid, get over it" song from his mom.
@@melissacooper4282 when the "Cheer Up Charlie" song is about to start, I'm all, "Prepare to fast forward. (prepare to fast forward) Fast Forward! (fast forward!)"
My favorite scene was where the guy is using a computer to calculated the location of the golden tickets. The contest was definitely rigged. The fake Slugworth was able to confront both Veruca and Charlie before the discovery of their tickets were made public. Up the airy mountain, down the rushing glen. We dare not go a-hunting, for fear of little men.
When Wonka does that forward roll, I always think Gene Wilder leaves it too late to actually go into the roll and he's going to fall flat on his face !
This is akin to what Disney was doing at the time , (and kind of still does)- a nice delightful movie for kids with at least one or two freak out sessions for adults. It was the 70's after all LOL
A few years ago I was falling asleep with the movie playing in the background. I started to dream out the scenes as the audio was heard but the dream changed. I saw the entire layout of the chocolate factory that wasn't shown in the movie or written in the book. In the basement were Oompa Loompas that we didn't see, and they all looked like John Malkovich. They were fueling the entire factory with coal as coal was being mined.
Some other random facts: 1. There were a total of ten actors playing Oompa Lumpas. Nine men and one woman. 2. In her adult years, the actress that played Veruca admitted she took a few props and still has them (such as a Golden Egg). They were forbidden from doing this but she got away with it. 3. The puff of steam that Mike exhales after eating the explosive candy was made by a tube connected to the side of his face.
Great Video, as usual, Minty. I think that Gene Wilder was so brilliant as Willy Wonka, that, Johnny Depp, who is also a Great Actor, was doomed from the start, especially when your last name is Wilder & you have Wild Hair. So sad that Gene Wilder passed away, even if at a decent age.

I liked her on the Electric Company She was a funky dancer
Drinking game: take a drink every time Minty says "Wonker" 😁. Excellent vid!!
One of my favorite movies! I’m
70 now and still love it’s plot and Wonka’s craziness. I can’t think of anyone doing a better job than Gene Wilder! Love the Ompa Lompas too! 🤪❤️👍
I agree, I'm glad they didn't make a sequel.
But.... um yeah, me either.
Yeah, some people just don't understand that some movies are _complete,_ with nothing left hanging and needing continuation or clarification. But you know Hollywood: "We've got to keep this cash cow alive," seems to apply all too often.
I wish they did. They could have called it, _Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory 2: Slugworth's Revenge..._
@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 except, it wouldnt be called that...because the guy who we all think of as slugworth, wasnt actually slugworth, he was wonkas only non oompa loompa employee
That's what I'm saying not all good movies need sequels.
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator was a wonderful book.
My siblings and I sat on the stairs eating popcorn watching this movie.
Love the info.
Also, it's worth noting all the parodies and references over the years, my favorite being the Slurm factory episode of "Futurama."
"Grunka Lunka dunkety dasis,
The secret of Slurm's on a need-to-know basis"
Grunka Lunka dunkety darmed-guard...
The parody in "Family Guy" was pretty dead on to- as Peter gets kicked out of the factory, he even laments "don't I even get a song?"
@@eclipsehorse8693 it's been done to death, but the scene where Peter runs home to the "golden ticket" music and then falls and scrapes his knee always makes me laugh.
Absolutely! Futurama did it the best!
Minty- an insightful and thoughtful episode! 🙏
I was just telling my partner how I thought the Candyman was a jerk for handing out free lollies and then being cold towards Charlie, and not 10 seconds later you voiced the exact same opinion! Glad to know the character had a similar impact...hahaha.
can never get enough of this movie. its on every christmas easter and any other chance they can to get it shown. gene wilder is just of the wall in it. this and blazing saddles are my two favorite wilder films
Rest in peace Denise Nickerson. I loved her performance in this and Dark Shadows.
And Brady Bunch!
Vietnam... is why it wasn't titled Charlie...it was a sign of the times on top of the other things you also mentioned.
....makes sense.Good observation.☝🏾😏
Though that would have made for an interesting film...
*Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*
Select children have won a contest to inherit a chocolate factory deep in the heart of South-Eastern Asia from an insane French man... little do they know, but NVA troops are working their way to the factory.
Benefit cheat, did it seem they had money for food,
Not to mention that he encouraged Charlie to steal the fizzy lifting drinks after Wonka told everyone no. And he also encouraged Charlie to give Slugworth the gobstopper to spite Wonka!
your monolog at the end is spot on. thanks for saying it.
Both the girls had a huge crush on Peter Ostrum, and were constantly competing with one another because of it.
Can't say I blame them
He was a cute little kid!
In the Candy Store Man’s defense , if your hungry and you eat really rich food fast you risk being sick on it .
Regarding the name Herpes: We're all helpless as to what our parent(s) decide to name us at birth.
True story. I once met a girl named Latrina.
My wife knows a guy who named his kid Dimmick.
I actually work with a girl named Echo!
@@melissacooper4282 There's a girl called that in the show Mr. Young.
My sister almost was named Edel. Then her name would have been Edel Weiss
I had the honor of meeting the cast. Veruca Salt is just the nicest person in real life.
I bet no one noticed that Willy Wonka is the original Jigsaw, not Kevin McCallister lol
That's because there is no reason to put the two together
I could picture Kevin subjecting Harry and Marv to the creepy boat ride
I don't usually comment but you are one of the only channels I am subscribe to and I love your content. I'm rooting for you minty. I love this movie and I love your insight into the meaning. Also you have a bad ass collection. 😆
I just watched this on the 50 year anniversary. The best line is "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams".
" A little non-sense now and then, is relished by the wisest man".
Who is that a quote from? Just wondering . . . 🤔
@@raoularmagnac2037 its one of the little quotes from the movie, he says it, if i recall properly, to mr. Salt
The rumours really are true, this movie is just Wonka’s spiral into insanity
I always loved that last scene where Gene Wilder smiles big & gives Charlie a meaningful hug...... that’s my favorite part of the whole film!!!!!!!!
I want it NOW!"
Verruca Salt is the most bad-ass of the kids. She's so awesome, she was the only kid to have their own song. Not even Charlie got his own song. The only song Charlie gets is a depressing "life sucks kid, get over it" song from his mom.
To be honest I didn't care for the song "Cheer Up, Charlie."

The guy using the computer was the late Tim Brooke-Taylor, most famous for "The Goodies".
He passed away last year from COVID-19.
Slugworth was able to confront all 5 of the children as they won the tickets.
dude every time you say Willy Wonker it cracks me the hell up LMAO!
When Wonka does that forward roll, I always think Gene Wilder leaves it too late to actually go into the roll and he's going to fall flat on his face !
I love this movie so much, with exception of the last few years, i use to watch this every christmas eve.
Only musical I was willing to watch as a kid
Such a great film! Much like Mary poppins, which is also lighthearted and fun!
Imagine all the little kids in the audience watching that tunnel scene.
This is akin to what Disney was doing at the time , (and kind of still does)- a nice delightful movie for kids with at least one or two freak out sessions for adults. It was the 70's after all LOL
Don’t have to. I was one of them.
@@eclipsehorse8693 a big-lipped alligator moment!
Some other random facts:
No mention of snozzberries?
Gotta keep it family-friendly, I guess.
Well, update, they taste like snozzberries. :)
I think Dahl made that up later just because he was a jerk who hated the movie
where IS the lickable wallpaper?! why don't we have this by now?! :)
@Edgar Poe do you know who Alan Moore is? The man is borderline insane when it comes to movies based on his works
@@eclipsehorse8693 as disgusting as children are, the last thing we need is them spreading more of their germs around
