This was a special taping for TV with a free-admission audience that had to stay through any retakes, not a paying audience. This made it possible to give the cameras more freedom.
@@M_SC There was previously a regular concert performance with a paying audience. Soon after they made this version. The same procedure had been used for the Bernstein/Boston versions of Brahms Symphonies 2 and 4 in 1972. I don't know if there were retakes, just that this method made it possible to make corrections.
Add this time to my thousands of times in my 91 years on the recordings or in the concert hall. I feel like I was born out of this. As though I brought it forth, or it brought me forth. Or perhaps this created the Cosmos. "In the beginning was the word" and I just now experienced the "beginning" again. Gods and Goddesses bless!
@@M_SC with a little creativity you can hear the instruments speak to one another. Often music feels like conversation or storytelling. That might be what he was refering to
This is just absolutely amazing. It might be due to my lack of experience, but i've never seen any conductor interpreting Tchaikovsky symphony 5 with this much optimism in the end. This interpretation should be kept for a long long time.
Exquisite. Sublime. Marvelous. Such highly polished musicians. And all under the skilled baton of the incomparable Bernstein. Watching the expressions on his face is a joy. He was so gifted. Tchaikovsky would have been so proud to have been there at Lincoln Center for that. I first heard Tchaikovsky's 5th as a young man of 18. I was swept away. Now 58 years later at 76, I am reminded of my youth and the countless times I listened with my dear father to these iconic works. Thank you to ioannis mavridis for getting this on TH-cam.
The only reason I would legitimatley consitor becoming a conductor is to recreate music in the way Bernstine does in this recording. Everytime the finale gets my heart pumping, plsu fantastic work with the french horn. I do not see this work moving from my number one spot for quite some time...
This filmed performance is beyond remarkable! I've probably heard this work a couple hundred times over my lifetime. This is a passionate and exceptionally well played reading. Bravo!
Csodálatos a produkció !!!!!! de szerintem ez nem a New York-i, hanem a a Bostoni szimfonikusok zenekar és Bernstein remekmű előadása. Érdemes a produkció érdekében a feliratot javítani !!!!!!! Kasznár Márta
Yeaaaaaa... I have no idea how tough it is or not to pull off but im used to Jansen's recording with Oslo and they had way more energy and excitement at this part imo.
Armando Ghitalla (Principal) and Rolf Smedvig (Asst Principal) … I had quite the crush on the young and handsome Rolf, who always stood out on all the Boston Pop performances with Arthur Fiedler on PBS throughout the 70’s, when I was a teenager.

Interesting! Any more information you could share would be good. Did they play it through and then go back? Or stop along the way?

Greetings! How wonderful to feel that way. This music is wordless, how does that fit in?

Tchaikovsky, Leonard Bernstein, and the BSO at their best! BRAVO!! Thanks so much for posting this marvelous performance!!!

Just curious, optimistic in what way? Trying to learn more 😊

Mon chef d'orchestre favori pour diriger avec verve, force et ce talent immuable, une de symphonies les plus expressives et émouvantes de Tchaikovsky.
Never a dull moment! Boundless energy. Wonderful work, great performance. thanks for uploading.
WOW!! Mr. Bernstein conducted that Finale with such FIRE!!!
Soy una ferviente admiradora de tanto de Tchaykosy como de Bernstein.

Es un espectáculo ver como Bernstein vive con esa intensidad la música que dirige.
Brought to tears...thank you.

Marvelous, i think ive seen this before, one of my favorite symphonies, definitely one of my favorite performances.
Semplicemente sublime e con Leonard alla direzione ...non aggiungo altro
La musica e la sua direzione parlano da sole
Best Fifth I ever heard
at 20:56; one of my favorite parts, Bernstein lets the silence sit so well into the melody
it's really a pity that the original version of this video can no longer been found on the internet!
Brilliant triumphant, Ioannis. Thanks a lot from an old viola player, John A. Precas.
Bravo💪👏👏👏👏👏😘💐💐💐thank you

Thank you! Sorry for my mistake!
Does anyone know who the trumpet players are in this recording?

It seems a bit tinny and rushed compared to others’ performances. Great piece of music, I think it should be slightly slower and grander.
