      Most people do this when starting out. Eventually you will learn that most metal actually uses a lot less gain than you would think.

    • @JAF2991
      @JAF2991 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Used to do that when I was starting to learn.
      Lows 10, Mids 0, Treble 10.
      Now I play metal in a band, with the gain halfway and mids turned up.

    Thank you for doing this video dude. This has to be one of the only good Tube Screamer demos that actually shows its functionality for metal. Until now, I wasn’t sure if it would really do much for my tone. I’ve been plugging straight into a Peavey 6505 MH with nothing boosting the front. I tried using my MXR EVH 5150 OD in the same fashion as a TS-9, but that’s not what that particular pedal was designed for. The EVH pedal was designed to simulate an “amp in a stomp box”. It doesn’t really tighten up the bottom end very well, and the gain is so high that it ends up over saturating the tone instead of enhancing it. This video has absolutely sold me on the Tube Screamer; it will be added to my signal chain very soon! Keep it metal, cheers man!!!

    • @Krufs
      @Krufs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your comment Cory! Yeah I felt the same, like everybody uses it but nobody explained why, it’s just one of those things that you eventually pick up if you’re delving into metal tone. It makes a huge difference, you almost can’t go back to just using the amp distortion afterwards! Stay metal, friend! \m/

    • @MetalBaller83
      @MetalBaller83 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Krufs You’re so right dude! After I posted that comment, I dove right into research mode to figure out exactly which type of tube screamer I wanted. There are so many highly regarded TS-style pedals out there; all of which sound a little different. Aside from the actual TS-9 and the 808, I wanted to learn about some of the other top rated alternatives as well; just to cover all bases. The ones that kept popping up on top ten lists included the MXR GT-OD, the JHS Bonsai, the Mesa Grid Slammer, the Earthquaker Devices Dunes, among many others. Ultimately though, I chose the one that the TS-9 is descendant from: The MAXON OD-9. And it works amazing with my setup; I couldn’t be happier.
      ALSO, I wanted to share with you a really awesome little toy I bought in the course of my research. Have you ever played with the MXR Raijin Drive? Don’t know if you’re familiar with that one, but it’s essentially a 2-in-1 pedal. There’s a selector switch on the pedal lets you toggle back and forth between an overdrive or distortion style clipping. The two types of clipping were designed after arguably the two most legendary pedals in rock: The distortion is based on the Boss DS-1, and the overdrive is based on the TS-9. Both modes are 100% true to the original pedals, but with more range! I’d highly recommend checking that one out.
      I could talk pedals all day; I gotta get back to work! Thanks again dude! Cheers from Denver!

He’s used an Ibanez Tube Screamer TS9 ( a great pedal) and he’s used a custom TC Electronic Raijin Drive pedal. He used very expensive Mesa amps but those aren’t necessary if you can’t afford them. Do you still use TS808? After 5 years later, would you pick up TS808 now, or any other TS/OD you'd prefer? I liked the Plumes, but not in stock where I live, also like Fortin 33 and Fortin Grind a lot, but they are pricey... Maybe I'll go with TS Mini, I am not sure... Cheers

    • @Krufs
      @Krufs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly these days I use a Helix. Way less error prone for live use and more compatible with our in ears. In studio I use the VST version to be able to tinker with the sound post recording. I DO use a tube screamer inspired plugin in the chain so the idea is still the same.
      I have been tinkering with Helix's Horizon Drive Emulator instead of the TS though. It's got more parameters as well as a built in noise gate so I'd recommend looking into that one if you play metal :)

      Same here. I started playing long before TH-cam was a thing. But I have noticed a few players holding the pick this way. I thought I was alone for a while. It works great for chugging . You get a killer sound that you cannot get with a standard pick attack. But, playing complex solos and stuff can be tricky. That’s why I’m learning the “regular” way now too. I tend to favor upstrokes because of the way I hold the pick. When most lead solos are played from a downstroke dominant perspective. These means I have to deconstruct and reverse engineer a lot of stuff . And it’s time consuming. So, I’m going to try a standard attack on the treble strings, and keep my reverse attack (like you) on the bass side strings 🤘🏻

    I'm 26 and just used a tube screamer for the first time on my 5150 3. It was like the first time I had sex without a condom. I thought protected sex was awesome but that was because I didn't know any better.

    Good video but the guitar is the least metal-looking guitar ever. It looks like something you use to play achy breaky heart

      Loaded with a high output Bareknuckles cobra T pickup! The look of the guitar doesn't affect the tone :)

      Derek You probably don't know a lot about guitars, first of all if u believe in your ears then it doesn't really matter what guitar or pickup he uses if the tone is good and i can tell you this metal tone is pretty sick once he turn tubescreamer on(like really good, at least to me), and yeah he uses high end single coil pickup which behave somewhat like humbucker and it's pretty good for metal especially for lower tunings which is drop c in this video

    There are better overdrive pedals nowadays. Plenty of clones, plus a few that went their own route and came out with something better.
