Ha ha, my window seals are all 20 years old and really these seals are only good for a decade, maybe 12 years. I engineered door and window seals into Discovery 2 - I really should have done this some years ago (but then I wouldn't have been making this video, lol)
Thanks, I hadn't even considered this as a draught source - I'd already replaced all the glazing with lower u-value units and that has made a huge difference but have now noticed where the seals on the opening windows are not quite perfect allowing condensation to form when it's very cold - I'll be measuring up for new seals 👍
Why, thank you sir. I'm a professional Automotive Engineer, so I used my engineering skills to work out how to fix mine and then shared it. 'Expertise' is probably over egging it a bit, but thank you.
Additional tip: If it’s cold on the day you plan to change then rubber seal or it has been stored in a cold place. Put the new seal in a bucket of warm, soapy water for 15 mins before you start to make the rubber more compliant.
Can you change the seal type to a different one? I have a 7 shape rubber seal and would like to change it to an O type, to see if it helps reduce main road traffic noise outside of the rear.
Really useful thank you, please can I ask how you did the top corners? I'm not sure if I need to cut a notch to get the seal around the corner (which is what my current drafty ones look like) or if the seal is flexible enough to just bend around?
Hi can you swap a flat seal to a bubble seal as we have a lot of air and water coming through this winter the seals looked ok in the summer not been done at all in 20 years
Replacing the seals on the back door, kitchen windows and patio doors has made a huge difference - AND these are all on the leeward side of the house. Next week I'm gonna work my way through doing all the windows on the front of the house, which is the windward side. Energy prices going the way they are, makes it so much more worthwhile than ever before.
Check your hinges, especially on top hung windows. Best way to check is from outside with windows locked shut if you can . See if there is any play in the window from the frame If so you will also need to replace the hinges too New seal alone will not eradicate the draught
I've got a flipper seal gasket instead of the tube ones. Are tubes better than flipper? Looking to replace the seals and I am wondering if I should go for a like-for-like or whether to go with the (Stormguard universal) tube ones?
Firstly they are not patio doors they are french doors, patio doors slide. Try doing that off a ladder. I've been in this business for forty years and do all kinds of repairs. Can't wait for the next video.
my window is similar to yours top hung and handle at bottom. Seal is okay all around apart from 1 corner to the right side of where the handle is. For some reason there is a considerable gap compared to rest of window? Is this the seal?
Everything perfect except when you have a single gasket all the way around you should start in the centre at the "top" of the window not the bottom. Any water that hits the pane of glass will travel down so to have a join at the bottom leave the possibility of water penetration.👍🏻
I did this but about 10 years after it should have been done. The rubber was like plastic and I was having to pick little bits of rubber out of the groove.
I had two windows that were really draughty, took a look at the seals and found that there was over an inch long gap between the seal ends, had some spare seal so measured and cut the size needed to fill the gap and presto! no more draught.

I folowed your instructions and replaced the seals on my windows with great success!
That is by far the best explanation and demonstration. Thanks for your time and effort
So far the best demonstration. I have different windows but the explanation here is clear on what to look for. Great tips. Thank you
Great informative video. I wonder how many people have been talked into having new windows fitted. When all they needed to do was put new seals in.
To quote Kenny Rogers, "You picked a fine time to fit the new seal..." Thanks for the tip!

Thank you very much for this wonderful, understandable demonstration
Excellent video . Everything simple and clear . Thank you.

Brilliantly hepful video. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

back again, amazing video thank you
The diagram at 5:10 and using a hex key to jury rig the correct size is a good touch.
Brilliant explanation 👍👍
Fantastic explanation and demonstration. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome!
Good tip on the hex keys! Thanks. Clear advice.
great advice a great money saver and a win for the green fight .
Amazing video, really enjoyed watching

Cheers bud
Yes, indeed. OR keep the seal roll in a warm place indoors for a couple of days before fitting (eg airing cupboard). Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video! Thank you! It really helped me understand - total newbie here and never done this kind of thing!
Thanks for this. Can you do a similar video for sliding pvc doors
Thank you
Great information and video production skills. Thanks for the links too. I need to do mine and this video will help!
Thanks. happy to hear.
Thanks 👍🙏

Thanks v.much this was really useful.

Did you ever find out?
Id like to know this too

@@AbouttheHouse0 yes its drfinetly a job ive got to do,,, thanks for all the advice on the St Moritz hot tub aswell,,, Awsome and thankyou again. 🙂👍
Great advice 👍
Excellent
I was hoping to see how to go around the corners as the existing seal has nicks taken out so it does the bend better.

Gr8 video,... 🙂
Yr a legend nice one
Nice wish I had those type of windows mine are the sliding type

Where did you source the seals from

Mine have felt ones on them any ideas on these ones
What about going around the corners. Does it need cutting
Hi any tips remove seal that’s stuck over the years please
Thanks
do we do the same method to replace the sesl on the bottom of a double patio door
Hi. Great post. Where can I get a seal to fit the profile of my uPVC door?
Truly PVC Limited...various types
I have a bit of a hole in the seal in the glass and theres water running down the window. Can i change that?
where do I purchase the seal

Possibly hinges if opposite handle.
Is the bubble seal better than the "V" shaped one?
definately.
Everything perfect except when you have a single gasket all the way around you should start in the centre at the "top" of the window not the bottom. Any water that hits the pane of glass will travel down so to have a join at the bottom leave the possibility of water penetration.👍🏻
how much et door a plane
So I fit the seal to both the frame and opening
I did this but about 10 years after it should have been done. The rubber was like plastic and I was having to pick little bits of rubber out of the groove.
So, you measured one part of the window as 6.5mm and another 5mm- does this mean you bought two different size seals?
No, one seal to sseal all round. the gap is bound to vary around a window so the seal must fill the largest gap.
Shrinkage of the fir tree gaskets and pressure gaskets are a sign its time to replace them
Pity you do not explain how to notch the seal around the corners. You make it sound easy but the corners are not
Droughts can also be caused by worn hinges..
Better tell Greta.
I had two windows that were really draughty, took a look at the seals and found that there was over an inch long gap between the seal ends, had some spare seal so measured and cut the size needed to fill the gap and presto! no more draught.
