I asked a few windows shops reps if there was a way to replace the foggy condensed sealed glass unit of my bay windows they avoided a straight answer and tried to replace the whole windows. Glad to see its doable and cost effective. and sad to see having less and less honest sellers/installers to tell all the options to replace/repair a failed IGU (didn't know this term as well). Thanks for this great viedo for DIYers or folks willing to hire someone to replace a broken unit.
Great video and even greater instructions. Although I probably won't be able to do this myself (75 yo, single female),. I will know what is involved when I hire someone to do it. Thx, Thx, Thx
Thanks for that and very good question, the last comment was very good, but not always possible if not labelled etc. The fool proof way is the lighter flame trick. The easiest way to explain this is to watch a you tube video and there are numerous (search how to test for Low e (flame trick). These short vids describe it hands on and very easy. Good luck!
Nice, concise video. Lucky you though. I'm working on a dozen or more home windows that are 45 year old Rivco with wooden glazing strips held by LONG staples and 45 years worth of toughened glazing compounds :)
How did that work out for you? It’s not always double sided tape holding it in. Sometimes it’s silicon, sometimes it is construction glue, sometimes it is hot glue. Is the window stationary? Imagine doing some of this while hanging out for a 2 story window.
This is great. My windows look all grainy / foggy. I was told the seal failed. How do I measure so I know what to order prior to replacing? Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
Your sealed units sound like they have moisture in between them. Measuring can vary depending on the manufacture, but the best way would be is to remove the glazing stops, these are usually materials depending on composition of your windows that are either cut at 45 degree angles of straight cut that tap in that secure the glass into the frame against the tape. Not only is the width and height of the sealed units but the overall thickness usually 3/4" to 1".
Hopefully you can help. The whole glass unit has come out of the lower sash on ore double hung vinyl window unit. If I remove the sash, lay it flat and apply the tape, should that work? All the interior pieces are intact -not sure about the outside but your video is a great help. Thanks
Great video! About to do one of mine for a second time. Question: Is there a way to tell which way to install the sealed unit so that the LOW-E pane is on the correct side - exterior from what I understand.

@@StarlineWindowsTonyDeBonisAwesome. Thank you!!. Now I just have to figure out which way to install the sealed unit. Low e pane on the exterior or on the interior of the window. From what I'm seeing, it may not matter all that much. I'm in Southern Ontario Canada.
As a window cleaner Ive had clients ask if I can clean a damaged window when it looks yellow-ish purple. I just explain to them that the window is damaged due to natural elements etc. Is this the way to replace those type of windows?
Yes, the seal has broken causeing the elements to get between the panes. There is a thin coat of metal on low-E glass and that can rust when the seal fails. The sealed unit has to be replaced like in this video.
As a Glazier of 25 yrs plus, it depends on type of window,, it could be security tape, wedge gasget captive E etc, also unit thickness could be Standard 28mm or smaller, 👍👍
@@anthonypape6862 Lowes will cut single panel of glass, but will not build you a double (panel) glazed, vacuum sealed, replacement window to replace the broken one, as is done in Tony's video. Eventually I found a vinyl company that build me one for less than $150, where a whole new window unit would have been 4x the cost.

Thank you so much for this very informative and simple approach to replacing an IGU!
Great demo. Even if you hire someone to do this, important to understand the process.
Thank you very much for your educational video saved me thousands of dollars!!!

Thanks for the great video/information 👍
Thank you for this video....after seeing a recent estimate for a small window unit. Shame on them!!

Thank you so much ,this was all a mystery for me !
@adelaferreria4575 •If you get a quote for a new window be very rapidly crystal clear !😊
Thank you so much !!!!! That was very helpful best video I found !!!
Wow, really detailed info and good instructions.
very well explained. thank you.
Can you say again what the name of the tape (blue on the roll)you were applying, thanks

I worked in the commercial area of the business. I always wondered how easy the residential side was haha.
Did you just change the seal, or the glass and seal
Does the frame have to be removed from the house or can it be done in place?
How thick is the glazing tape? Is it 1/16 thick and 1/2 inch wide?
Thank You, you are good and fast!

What about 20 plus year old units. What about the vinyl breaking. Now you can't get new ones . What can you do
Same people Cathey 450 for the one(1) pane???

What about the argon gas? Is that pumped back in there?
That’s why the other guy said “sealed” as in sealed with gas inside.

Where does one get replacedment double glazed glass panel?
Did you get a reply, or find a place to order them? If so, please post it.
Wish they posted a link that would be so helpful. Im like ok i know how to install now where do i find the actual part too install
where do I get the sealed unit ?
Where do you live?
I live in uk and just went to a local glazing company they made me new units for very little cost and i picked them up the next day.
@@ryanh3285 thank you for reporting back.
Thank You🌸
Thanks! This was extremely helpful !!!
Thank you Sir
Again ask the question why did the unit break down answer it lies in water. No attempt to test drainage won’t be long before it needs replacing again
If you don't own a glazing spoon I'd use a scraper or putty knife rather than a chisel less damage to the profile
Its dangerous to scrrape off the double side tape on the frame havind the doble side panel underneat !! You can easily brake it with the chisel!!
Thank you
Having glass stops on the outside is a sign of a cheap window. A suction cup and a flat head screw driver and you get in
Or a glass cutter or a rock or hammer or lock pick or bump key or knock on the door and when they open it all ways to get in
