How Usopp Became The MOST Neglected Strawhat

  • Usopp has long been one of my favorite Strawhats. He provides a different perspective from many of the other characters in the main cast on top of him being flat out hilarious. He used to offer so much Pre-timeskip, but in recent years I feel like he has just been present, not contributing much.

The power scaling has ascended so high, that Oda doesn't know what to do with Usopp anymore. He wants to keep Usopp weak so he retains his cowardly nature, so he can't just buff him up like he does with the rest of the crew. But that leaves Usopp very little to do since fighting is now taking center stage. Usopp not getting the W over Page1 was a complete missed opportunity. It would have required Oda to get very creative for Usopp to overcome the huge difference in strength between the two. But Oda just said screw it, and let BigMom one shot Page1 instead. We all just keep coping with the neglect of Usopp's character by saying he'll get his shine in Elbaf.

Man screw that power scaling excuse. Ussop has always found a way to beat enemies much stronger than him. Mr 4 was a monster, Kuma C was mixing him, Perrona defeated Luffy Sanji and Zoro but Ussop won. Oda just neglecting him

It did bug me a lot how Nami and Usopp couldn't find a way to beat Page 1 and Ulti without getting a massive amount of help from Big Mom. That just felt lazy to me. Nami soloed a six powers user with a cheap devil fruit in Enis Lobby. I don't see why she can't beat a haki user using intelligence. She needs to at some point. The Strawhats always get better by beating somebody who has abilities that they don't possess, and using quick thinking and in Nami's case weather science. Usopp has overcome stronger foes by using psychology, and by being surprisingly hard to take down. Surely there would have been some way Usopp could take advantage of the dynamic between Ulti and Page one, as messy as it is.

The biggest crime in writing Usopp is that *HE IS NOT A NORMAL PERSON.* He isn't just some dude that hangs out with the crew. He was actually decently creative when it came to being a shipwright with no prior training, and making weapons. He also shows impressive durability outside of gags. And to top it all off, he has literally one of the best sniping skills that we've seen. His few actual feats of sniping, are displays of immense skill. Yet it is never utilised. You would think that such a skilled sniper would have amazing utility from a distance supporting his crew. Like, lethality of shots aside, he is so useful. Yet every arc he is reduced to a funny coward that falls ass backwards into helping his crew. People say Nami gets shafted, but at least she consistently gets interesting power-ups and has non-combat utility. Usopp adds nothing to the crew while having so much to offer.

In film Gold, Usopp's feat of defeating that Luck based villain came from his wits and battle iq. In Stampede, he lifted rubble that no normal person would've been able to just to save his captain. His loyalty as a strawhat is 100% fully fledged and presented to you.
In film Red? Holy fuck, his presence in that final fight was amazing. Them practically confirming that Usopp has the most potential in observation haki because of his father, he actually TAKES LEADERSHIP of the crew to match the red hair pirates in attack of that big boss thing that Uta made.

It honestly hurts to see that our most relatable guy has barely been given squat throughout the post-time skip. At this point I feel like Usopp is only being reduced to huge burst of good fights and intelligence, which might be because he'll be too overpowered to be seen as a one trick pony for every fight that is to come. Not only that, but I also think that because of how OP his pop green ammo can be, Usopp needs to be cowardly to balance it out.
I think the thing I hate a lot about Usopp's development is the literal lack of it throughout post-time skip. Everything just feels like the same with Usopp, but he has more drip and better ammo, but it is BARELY used throughout. The only good times I've seen Usopp shine is in the movies, but they aren't exactly canon so I dismiss them, but it is good to see him do something cool like drag racing in the GOLD movie. Still, I don't like the fact that Usopp spent 2 years in a man eating island and didn't get anything from it besides abs and ammo. Like what was the entire point of it in terms of emotions and survival?
Here's my theory though that I hope shines some light. Throughout 2 years, Usopp had survived and battles against man eating plants in an inescapable island, which he and Heracles were able to get out of. I AM HOPING that we at least see some actual backstory as to what he did there cause I am so baffled by why he still acts the same. I theorize that Usopp is suffering from some sort of PTSD or trauma where perhaps he becomes so strong like a monster and destroyed and island but suppressed it because of how much damage he had caused. From there, if we end up in Elbaf, that trauma will be triggered and it''ll turn Usopp into some powerful god like he's supposed to be. Another theory is that he's probably hiding his ability to fight because I dont know.
Overall, Usopp is my favorite character, and the recent chapters still don't do him any justice. I don't wanna see Usopp just piggyback his godhood from the strawhats or by luck. I genuinely want to see Usopp shine because he is able to, and not just for his main fights between is father and Van Auger. There has to be something, at least in Elbad, but it still shouldn't end in Elbaf. Our long nose has a long way to earn his Godhood and it better come true

Therefore, he can still showcase better skills in fighting and tact while remaining as the less superior one since he’s not part of the dominant group of the crew (powers and monster-like capabilities). So his cool and great feats and added skills could be on a level that’s realistic for him and human beings.

I think you've misunderstood or misconstrued Usopp's storyline in Dressrosa. To put it simply: Usopp learned to be brave for the helpless, even those outside of his circle of friends. Every arc that Usopp gets some play is about him finding new reasons/motivations to be brave. First it was to defend his village, then to stand proudly with his friends, then to defend his captain's dreams, etc etc. Him forgetting Robin in Dressrosa didn't "erase his character development from Enies Lobby." What it did was remove his crew as a motivating factor to be brave. The tontattas are complete strangers to him and they are not mission critical (in his eyes, at least); he has no reason to risk his neck to save them. Despite that, he still turns around to fight people way more powerful than himself. Finding new reasons to be brave is critical to his dream of becoming a "brave warrior of the seas" and being able to honestly pronounce that to all to hear.
Granted, his showing in Wano was pretty disappointing, but that's just another unfortunate byproduct of how badly packed that arc was with a bunch of lame side characters.

Second of all you're clearly the one who understand nothing, throughout the manga you're shown countless times that they are bad people in both camps be that marines or pirates so what the strawhats identify as is irrelevant everything they've done since the start of their adventure has been beneficial to people and more often then not these people were being oppressed, so don't even try to play the semantics game that because they identify as pirates it somewhat influence what they do, it doesn't and never has they always end up helping those in need and not once have they walked away from helping someone in need. Lastly when Usopp did what he did they were already actively involved in the core of the problem. So sure Usopp had no obligation to help them but you are delusional if you think Luffy and co would have let it slide had he actually walked away.

I was just talking about these very points with my bestie about Usopp. She said Oda has the curse of "too many characters" in the story, now. Whether good or bad guys, there's just too many characters and things going on, and it pushes some of the strawhats into the background. Hoping things will change and Usopp can use his incredible tactile intelligence in battle and work on mastering his observation haki. I think Jinbe should teach the strawhats how to use armament haki as well. People keep talking about Elbaf being Usopp's arc and I hope this is a very good thing for him. If it is possible based on how Oda loves to insert old fables into his stories in some way, there will be some sort of Davey and Goliath battle where the small man wins. (Usopp) I couldn't care less that he looks buff post timeskip (even though he's nicer to look at than ever XD) it just doesn't really do anything. Where did his growth in bravery come in? He was literally on a plant island where everything wanted to eat him. He also relies too heavily on those plant attacks. I liked his explosive attacks from before, which he should still try to incorporate as well as the dials from Skypiea. There's just so much wasted potential and it is sad to see people giving up on him. I don't want to, either.

Less a direct fighter and more someone who ties up loose ends and comes in clutch where battle centric Luffy can't. But Sanji closed the marine gates, sussed Robin's location, threw Crocodile off the strawhat's trail, and so on. His background deal to offer himself to save the strawhat's should've included Usopp in the rescue heist for a full circle thing. just replace him with Brooke in Dressrosa, he could God Usopp another way at whole cake.

@@crovanti the thing is, you said that Usopp had a very wide role in the crew and it got reduced with franky joiniing.
But then you reduce the story telling itself to his fights post timeskip. Or even in pretimeskip you don't give credit to how he saved Zoro, Nami and Vivi from the melting candle wax from Mr 3, him blowing up Jangos and fullbodys Ships and producing an escape route to Mr 2s distraction and how his rope came in very usefull in multiple situations in skypia.
But postimeskip, what about how his plants, brain and skill helped the crew there. The list grows, when you not just focus on fights.
      1. Keeping the crew save on the travel to ffishmen island like keeping a zoro from making a slash attack threw the bubble or slowing rocks.
      2. Trampoline for Zoro when he fought the dragon, boats to cover a lake.
      3. Putting the raging kids to sleep and capturing caesar at the end (very important) when he got seastone handcuffs in advance (a disappearing he did what formerly was mostly Sanjis thing).
      4. Starting that whole alliance in Dressrosa with getting the tontattas to their side, freeing himself and robin.
      5. Improving Namis clima tact again.
      6. Rallying up the samurai in wano, something Zoro declared to Luffy he would do but failed misserably by geting kicked out of the flower capital.
      7. Not only keeping 2 Tobi Roppo occupied while they could harm allied forces liike queen did, he forcefeeds tamas dangos to A LOT of Gifters and headliners.
      8. Protecting Red scabbards.
Yes, his fighting was not that success in wano and he probably realised it himself that just with plants, you can't get threw something very durable like a Dinosaur. Even Sanji could not defeat Page One fast, IN HIS RAID SUIT.
But he did lots of stuff in wano pre onigashima, more than Zoro, who at the end just protected Komurasakki and Otama and the rest wandered around lost.
He also did stuff in Onigashima.
But yea, it ofcourse gets totaly overshadowed in things like popularity polls by more and more strong, cool characters appearing with cool fights/gimmicks. All what Usopp does in the backkground seems like nothing when a Zoro defeats an All Star with the Name "King" and slows down a combined attack of 2 yonkos, while also getting a tiny bit of family history revealed.
And while Usopp and Sanji shared tactican/strategist roles pretimeskip, Usopp claimed these roles mostly for himself posttimeskip. And why sani priior to wano also not exactly won some fights with Vergo/Doffy (he also not lost them), it gets overshadwoed that Usopp also took these jobs as from Zou onwards, Sanji took a leading role and got lots of development as focus on him. The tons of small jobs Usopps got are well, small and easily overshadowed.

I have to disagree on Brook at least. Brook was hands down the MVP in Whole Cake Island, both getting the rubbings of the poneglyphs (Even standing up directly to Big Mom, mind you) and destroying the picture of Mother Carmel. Furthermore, he greatly helped in fending off Big Mom's fleet during the escape. Even in Wano he held his own, even if he may not have been fighting a major opponent. Usopp just felt completely out of his league during Wano.
Chopper on the other hand may have ways to contribute that go beyond just fighting, but he suffered greatly from the fact that he was left out of both, Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island.
But overall there's generally a whole lot of neglect for the main cast because Oda is putting more and more focus on a whole new roster of supporting characters in every arc ever since Dressrosa, leaving far less time to focus on all of the Strawhats, even with the massively inflated amount of chapters for each arc.
I really miss the times when it was, for the most part, just the Straw hats versus the arc's big bad and his henchmen... arcs like Alabasta, Enies Lobby or Thriller Bark come to mind.

All of the Straw Hats personalities are fully in tact and the Straw Hats live off the beat of there own drums. So there going to act like themselves most of the time cause that's how they choose to express themselves. (I have a small theory that each of the Straw Hats will get there own Arcs before the Story Ends). But a more meta reason it cause well back in the old days of One Piece we had fewer straw hats, and very few additional allies, and it was much more simple to get from Point A to Point B. So they were front, and center like let's look at Thriller Bark we have only the Straw Hats not a lot of Major Enemies (like only 4 reason) that weren't given that much focus so the Straw Hats had the spot light too themself. But now we go to Wano where we have Dozens, upon Dozens, upon Dozens of Characters. But it's too show that the Straw Hats are hitting the Big Leagues there fighting literal armies. And Oda has stated multiple times that there were things he wanted to do in certain arcs but he just didn't have the time to focus on that thing honestly I respect him for being that transparent with his fans. So yes it is a Issue that our God Sniper Boy hasn't done much but at this point but the World doesn't revolve around him, or the Straw Hats honestly it never did. But honestly if this is One Piece's Final Saga then I want Oda to take his time Franky is my favorite Straw Hat and he hasn't had much focus since Dresrosa but if Franky gets that one big epic moment before the series ends I'll be satisfied. I'm just going to enjoy the ride. I will say this What Happened to Sniper King Mask? Does he still have it?

I think you are underestimating Usopp's post time skip moments, just like in Enies Lobby where he was fundamental for the SH to win, he was the most important character in Dress Rosa alongside Luffy, without Usopp they simply would've lost there to Doflamingo, everything that happened in that saga is so characteristic of him and highlights his character so well
He also does a lot in Wano, both in fighting and in helping Otama get to the Speaker, displays a lot of new skills and constantly outsmarts Page One and Ulti to keep fighting these much stronger opponents, just like he did before
To me his character is just constantly evolving ever since he joined the SH, out of all of them he is basically only second to the monster trio development wise
We see in Wano that pretty much all straw hats get something new, Robin's fight versus Black Maria is amazing in all aspects since the beginning with Sanji calling for help to her new power that fits her so well
Chopper developing a cure in a few minutes for an artificial disease he didn't knew before, while in the middle of a war and being himself afflicted by the disease, then administrating it to everyone there is probably the greatest feat he has ever done in the series
I think all of your sentiment is very common, in every series people tend to have adversion of the new stuff to come out and look in high standards on the classic and old contents due to nostalgia and/or the content having more time to mature, therefore to be really understood and analysed
I'm sure this will happen to One Piece as well, just wait a few years and I'm sure you'll start appreciating the great moments Usopp had so far, also his true highlights are yet to come at Elbaf and in his reunion with Yasopp

Absolut TERRIBLE take on the Dressrosa moment with the Tontattas. That was by far his HIGHEST moment in the show !! He did not forget the events in Ennies lobby either, this was 100% Usopp. Why is him running away bad? Usopp had absolutely no reason to save the Tontattas in that moment. He only knew them for a couple hours to that point and the only reason he was there was due to them kidnapping him and Robin and him telling a lie to get out of that situation. The Tontattas are complete strangers to him and Usopp who is a PIRATE, not a marine, not a hero, a Pirate, has 0 obligation to help them out but in the end he DID. He risked his life to save Strangers.
We've been shown how he is willing to fight for his friends but him fighting a battle that he could not win to save some strangers is prove of his bravery and you are saying its his worst moment because he hesitated to jump in?!?!
What makes this Moment even greater was that he stood no chance in that fight. He was alone fighting a Character with the most broken Devel fruit in the show and a guy with Logia like powers who was not affected by any of his attacks, yet he still came back and tried to save them. He didn't jump in without thinking like Luffy but he hesiated and choose to show courage. Any other opinion about this moment is sheer nonsense

I totally agree!!! In fact, it wouldn't make sense for Usopp to be so brave in Dressrosa right away bc his goal is to be a brave warrior, and all the strawhats will achieve their goal at the end of their journey! Slow burn character development is not linear, so moments like this totally make sense. It's the fact that even if he forgot Robin and would MOST DEFINITELY lose against someone who could killed him, he still went back at the end and made a decision to stand up! People forget that he's the most normal guy in their crew sans Nami by that time.

I think Usopp should have used treachery and some new gadgets to defeat Trebol because leaving aside his horrible role as bodyguard of Sugar, he didnt play any other relevant role in Dressrosa until he attempted to kill Law and Luffy in a suicide attack (which failed).
In Wano he and Nami should have been able to defeat Page One and Ulti by using teamwork and opportunism. Also in this arc he should have gained more or less experience with observation haki.

In contrast, in the past if Usopp didn’t help the Strawhats completely lose. If he’s not there for Enies Lobby then Robin doesn’t get saved, if he’s not at Thriller Bark Perona makes all the Strawhats negative and they can’t even fight back. My gut feeling is that Oda is going to inevitably fall for the same trap that many other Mangaka have before, which I like to call "the Goku Show Problem". Where inevitably as a series gets further along one character ends up the only one that matters in fights/ect. and by the end literally every other character that isn't being fought at that moment might as well be part of a cheerleading squad for the character because Mangaka often without realizing it buff their character up again and again until the power difference is so high that the others might as well have never bothered showing up.
My only hope is that Oda doesn't fall for this trapping and doesn't inevitably make literally everyone else (even including Sanji and Zoro) useless in comparison because Luffy essentially has Toon Force: the ability now, and finds ways to keep everyone else able to at least contribute in some way.

    Two things:
    1. Wano barely had any Usopp moments, but one thing I think people don't talk about enough is that throughout the arc Usopp is confident in his abilities and has resolve, and only in extreme circumstances (like facing Big Mom) does he show any cowardice.
    2. The thing that makes his running from the Tontattas important is that when he does come back, he doesn't hide behind a moniker or a mask. Often when he combats someone else he dresses himself up to be more than he is, calling himself Captain or God or Usoland, or putting on a mask and pretending to be a superhero. It's not about whether he won or lost but that he showed a piece of extreme bravery and redemption and took full accountability without putting up a wall of deceit.

I think people are just angry the SH in general are no longer taking the center stage. Now the story is lot more focused on the side characters. I think all the SH are still fine and well in true still the SH. They still feel like characters and not caricature. It just that their moments were significantly reduced and they're a lot more mature. If you view post Timeskip as a whole, it does seem that they lack any developments but if you actually judged arcs by arcs you'll notice that they still do have their moments that makes them still feel like fleshed out characters. WCI isn't just Sanji's arc. Nami, Brook and Jimbei were super developed there as well. Chopper not as much, but still have highlights here and there like the fact he was the one who managed to capture Brulee to begin with.
I also hate the sentiment that the SH need to have a big 1v1 fight for them to truly shine. One Piece isn't a typical battle shounen. It's mainly an adventure story and an epic fantasies. Usopp has a lot of highlighted moments in Wano as well. And yet based off some comments here, it really seems people are just fixated on the fact he didn't have a "big" fight. Dude out here criticising the Samurai and their culture while defending their asses, played a massive support for Nami and was a key figure in turning the tides of war by figuring out Bao Huang and using her to broadcast Tama's voice.

    • @crovanti
      @crovanti  ปีที่แล้ว +8

I agree that Post-Timeskip the scale of what is happening means that all the Strawhats can’t get attention all the time and I really liked Oda’s solution of splitting up the crew in Dressrosa and WCI to make sure that he doesn’t have characters just sitting around doing nothing. But I’ve been rewatching pre-timeskip and some of the Strawhats have definitely been reduced down some. Zoro is one of the biggest examples of this he used to be so much more than the cool strong guy he is now (Yes I did like him and Sanji being excited to see Luffy getting close to his dream in Wano). On my rewatch I’ve been shocked a couple times on just how smart Zoro used to be.
And I’m not calling for everyone to have a 1v1 fight every arc. For instance, I’ve been completely fine with Robin Post Timeskip because she is on the crew to look for and translate poneglyphs and she has been fulfilling this. Chopper hasn’t had a 1v1 but in Wano he did his doctor duty.
Sanji highlights my problem because he has been written so well consistently since Dressrosa. If Oda can do all this stuff for Sanji why can’t he spread the love around to the rest of the crew?
The point of this video was to show that Usopp can contribute to things to narrative because he used to all the time (Enies Lobby is probably Usopp at his best and he doesn’t have a 1v1), but recently he has been no where near as important or prevalent. The timeskip happened in 2010. Is it not fair to expect more out of members of the main cast across 13 years?

There is one other thing to note....
The series was not originally meant to feel so long
One reason we feel we lost some character development from Ussop is because we kinda did...
Oda is kinda repeating some steps.... why??? Because while he needs to expand the world, he actually already fit most of the story beats....
Alabasta, Water 7 & Enis Lobby were repeated with Dressrosa, Zunesha and Whole Cake.....
The reason the power scaling and everything increased was that Oda wanted to expand upon the world itself rather than just the story of the characters...
It's also why Sanji suddenly had a new backstory... because Oda felt a need to give the Straw Hats more story to develop.... because if not, their story is finished...
In fact, he even admitted in an interview that he never wanted Gear 5, but put it in to bring back the fun of the story...
One Piece isn't the original story Oda planned...

I think I know why he has little relevance now. Ussop's development basically has two goals now: Become a worthy match of his father and become a brave warrior of the sea. The only problem is that his dad has a 2bn berry bounty, so for him to get that strong and still be the weakest, you have to power up the rest of the crew significantly, including his fellow weaker members like Brook, Chopper and Franky (I see Nami as being 700m berry worthy, but she isn't as durable, which I don't think will change, but she now has a Zeus stand). I think everyone mastering haki, having their fruit awakenings and beating Black Beards crew will be their final individual power-ups.
And don't forget, this is the final saga. Character arcs are coming to completion, so we can't have anyone but Luffy, Kobe, Dragon, Shanks, Buggy or Trafalgar D Waterlaw starting character arcs (I say these guys as they seem to be the main sectors of influence in the story; i also like saying Law's full name :).
