I think the part where Sanji being removed as the crew is walking through Alabasta under the sheet is because Sanji walking around to begin with was due to him being an unknown member of the crew, giving him the leeway to not be hidden. But since so much got taken out, Sanji's phone calls, mystery, and the like weren't made clear so they probably felt like there was no justifying having him being the only human member to be walking around in broad daylight.

Wow! Why were they doing this? I remember watching the series with bloods and cigarettes in german TV on mid day time. I feel sorry for the english audience kids lol.
You know, if you told me that in the original, Zoro's childhood friend Kuina was crippled by a fellow male student resentful over not being able to beat her in a fair fight, and in the 4KIDS version they instead made her fall down the stairs, I'd immediately believe it. Not just that, but I'd start believing that Oda made a powerful statement about the treatment of women, and how 4KIDS went with a "safer" option that is almost insulting. It's kinda crazy how the 4KIDS version is arguably better, at least thematically.
From France... I just don't know HOW THE HELL it was possible to censor One Piece like that... I mean, yeah in France we got a lot of things censor by changing the name / dub or even cutting the episode but this is just geniously stupid. Changing the music to replace it by this... shitty rap or shitty soundtrack like DBZ is beyond comprehension for me.
no, you see: it's a good thing they changed it! now no one dies! I mean, they replaced it with a girl getting beaten to the brink of death so bad she can never recover, and someone else getting thrown in a dungeon to die of malnutrition & neglect, but that's off screen. if it's off screen, it doesn't count. no one dies on screen, so it's better! but seriously, a simple realistic accident of slipping on the stairs to getting beaten so bad you're bedridden for the rest of your life. they made that soooo much darker
Imagine being the guy having to edit all the guns into finger guns or invisible guns on Yu-Gi-Oh, or the dude who had to edit all the hell shirts on dgbz xF😅
4kids : oh look, a show with cartoony artstyle and lots of humor, a perfect fit for kids, let's pick this one to dub 4kids after 20 episodes and 50+ censors : we made a huge mistake
That's what they get for thinking "Animated" = "For kids." It was a huge waist of time that changed nothing. They censored guns, yet today we still have gun violence and school shootings, so...
4Kids choosing to downplay Luffy's first bounty is one of the most mistifying changes to me out of these. Do they want kids, who are watching a show where the main protagonist is a pirate, to not think being wanted by the government is cool?
They don't want it, but lowering his bounty doesn't make him less cool. He is a rubber man who uses his powers as skillfully as he can, more than any other character with rubber abilities or similar, so it's useless to lower his bounty.
That's the thing, given how overtly reactive and sensitive 4kids were, I don't think 4kids would have wanted to plant the idea to child audiences that being rebellious to the government is cool. I too don't fully understand their logic though.
The thought process is truly baffling. Gum gum pistol? Too violent, can't reference guns. Hmmmm, bazooka is also too violent. Hey, you know what doesn't imply violence? _Double barreled shotguns_
4kids made me consider One Piece as a huge joke for YEARS. It was so goofy and dumb I could never take it seriously even as a kid, it was only 10+ years later sometime in highschool I decided to give the One Piece anime a chance again because I would always peak at it after watching my weekly Shippuden and Bleach and wondered why and how it lasted so long. So glad I gave it a second chance, can’t believe they let a studio just ruin an anime like this.
Same. I came across the 4kids hunk of junk when I was around 16 or 17 and called it "One Piece of shit" until THANKFULLY a fews years later, my boyfriend in college screamed "NOOOO! WATCH THE SUB!! IT'S AMAZING!" after I dropped my aforementioned name for it when he asked me if I liked it, I just thanked him last week for introducing me to the REAL One Piece. I'm all caught up to this day and awaiting more Egghead arc every week. I'll be 39 next month. Sooo now I've been with this thing since I was Luffy's age and now I'm about to be one year older than Brook when he died. XD What a ride. 4kids ALMOST ruined that.
I consider myself fortunate I was clued in to the anime community at the time and learned about Funimation getting the One Piece license from 4Kids the day after it happened. If you weren't there, it's hard to conceive how much JOY rang out through every fandom. Even anime fans who didn't like (subbed) One Piece were happy. It felt like the Beast had been slain… We didn't know at the time 4Kids never wanted One Piece and was _legally forced_ by Toei to take it.
@@Your4Local4Geek Thanks! This face just looked so derpy imo that I had to use It! Although I am planning to change It to something from Post Timeskip Perona later on...
We made a meme go so hard that we ripped thru the space-time continuum to the day the 4Kids localizing team chose Kuina's death to be caused by a student named Down D Stairs
To be 100% fair, THAT edit is par for the course for ANY cartoon airing in a "children's" timeslot. Same with smoking (the lollipop might have been less edit work and is also a neat unintentional shout-out to the detective series _Kojak_ -- its titular character always had a lollipop because he was an ex-smoker… "Who loves ya, baby?")
I like to believe that in the 4Kids One Piece world, there’s just one guy who goes around removing the signs of shops leaving them blank. Hence why they sometimes appear and reappear in the same episode.
@@ItsB3enLikeThis I could imagine both extremes getting upset: Secular and non-Christian parents getting upset that having crosses is somehow promoting Christianity, while Evangelicals getting upset that having crosses somehow denigrates Christianity.
The funny thing is that the Water guns the Navy use in the 4Kids dub would probably be more effective given almost everyone they target has some form of Devil fruit powers.
Oddly enough I have an old online friend who had worked on the 4kids version of One Piece and I asked him if he knew why the sea was redone in some of the episode openings. According to him, it was because the opening episode title text for those episodes had the sea moving in the background and it was impossible to add a new still frame with the new texts without it looking weird. Other episodes had blank backgrounds so it was easy to either snap a frame and enter the new text fonts for the episode titles, or if needed, remove a few things from that shot. But the sea was everywhere around the original opening episode title text. So instead of looking amateurish by just taking a snapshot of the frame & not having the sea move behind the new English text, they opted to make a new 3d sea animation as a background drop for those particular episodes. Obviously after so much time went into that, they scrapped that approach for future episodes.
4kids edits just feel like a store manager having employees do meaningless tasks just so they can tell the regional managers that they were doing something.
I remember when the 4kids version started airing here in the states. I would catch episodes at random every so often, and I remember just hating this show! I could put up with Yugioh or Pokemon cheesy writing, but something about 4kids One Piece really irritated me more than the others. I remember watching an episode on toonami during the end of the Drum Island arc, and something seemed less annoying than the first time I saw it, not realizing it was the uncensored dub. 4kids ruined any interest I could have had in One Piece for almost 15 years! I was shocked when I heard how massively popular this show is and STILL on going. I started watching the series and now I’m committed to catching up one day! Currently at around episode 200!
To me One Piece is a kind of goofy you’re also meant to take seriously, but in the 4kids version they just do away with the seriousness and slap on another layer of uber goofiness to make it “4kids”. Which I of course think is so ridiculous because Avatar The Last Airbender was a show for kids, but also for everyone, it got into some seriously dark stuff but in a way that teaches you how to deal with and respond to tragedy and fear. Anyways keep it up. My best friend forced me to watch One Piece and I only did it because he was my bestie. My perception of it was similar to yours except I just had it in my head that I only liked a select few mature anime, Monster, Berserk, Attack on Titan etc. and that One Piece was probably the epitome of anime I didn’t like. But watching it and then catching up with the manga was one of the few best things to ever happen to me lol. It is just so profound and beautiful and wholesome. Please take my advice and if you are, stop looking up one piece content and if you ever see it click “not interested” if a video pops up so the algorithm doesn’t send you anymore. You WILL get spoiled if you give the internet any reason to show you one piece stuff. Even if you just want to google a name or something to jog your memory there’s a good chance it’ll show you a spoiler related to whatever it is you searched (given everything is so interconnected and there are very few one off characters and places).
I think one of the biggest reasons that kids try to play out stuff they see on TV is because they don't see people getting hurt, or bleeding. They have no idea that hitting someone with a big stick like they saw on their favorite show might actually hurt someone. By leaving in the injury and the blood it does teach the kids that; yes, this is dangerous stuff and you can be hurt really badly. Don't do it.
Yepp, thats what bothered me with Stuff like OP or DBZ - People seemingly beating the hell out of each other without any consequences. Thats an INVITATION for Kiddos to try it... Like you said. Blood and Injury shows that this is serious stuff.
Using the youtube auto captions, i have compiled every instance of the phrase "has/have been [adjective] censored" using a regex, and there are 97 total occurences. With a conservative estimate of 30ml per shot, and 40% alcohol content, that would be 12ml of alcohol per shot. That would be 2.9 litres of whatever drink you choose, or about 1 litre of pure alcohol. With an overestimate of 5.5 litres of blood volume (more than the average person), would result in a blood alcohol concentration of 17.4%. That would make you very, very dead.
@@n00bxl71 I appreciate your math and thank you for it, but I must translate it into American so dumbasses like me can understand. SO… 30mL is just over 1 fluid ounce (a "mini" shot or 2/3 of a normal shot). 97 shots would be either 97 ounces OR, for full-shots, 145½ ounces. For reference, a US Gallon is 128 ounces -- just under 4L. In other words, by US reckoning you'd be drinking just over 3/4 of a gallon (as you say, ~3L). Very very dead.
@@Soufriere84but we do use milliliters, it's on like every type of medicine you can buy. If people near you don't know how much a milliliter is you must live in kentucky or something lmao
Actually wanted to watch the 4Kids dub myself after seeing your videos. Only knowing the original Japanese and German dub. Sooo, wish me lots of strength! Also. Thanks for your awesome videos, would be funny to see more videos showing off somewhat random edits and all like that. Heard Pokemon was pretty rough, too.
4kids was in charge of the export that was licensed to other territories, so they made their version blank of most text so they could edit their own text or choose to leave it blank. Most territories imported it from 4kids, rather than Japan, because 4kids is the licensor, so they receive 4kids version. You can tell because the scripts are translations of 4kids texts and contain 4kids edits.
Which territories ? I can tell that in Europe we didn't had the 4kids version but the original, and I'm pretty sure that it was also the case for Asia.
It was a fun ride watching your 4Kids One Piece videos and then seeing this finalized version of it. I’m happy you referred to it as the 4kids edit and not the 4kids dub. How I see it, dub implies that the only thing they changed was the language it was in. It doesn’t take a major One Piece fan to realize that isn’t the case with 4Kids’ version. The watching the 4Kids version of One Piece is pretty much the same as listening to the radio edit of your favorite song. You know how everything is supposed to go, but you know it can’t be that way because of standards and practices. I still don’t understand why the only Filler Arc they completely kept in was the Rukia Island arc. I thought the other filler arcs were taken out because the nature of those arcs added nothing to the plot and were only made so the anime wouldn’t outpace the manga. Lastly, I like that message you said at the end talking how 4Kids shouldn’t receive all the hate they got for censoring One Piece. We can definitely joke about how it was a bad move on their part, but we definitely should move on from this. I will say that the “What if 4Kids dubbed [anime]” parodies are really hilarious and do show how ridiculous their edits can get.

I'm surprised you missed it, but "Cook it Up" wasn't originally from the Alabasta dinner scene. It was used in the cooking contest Sanji entered in Loguetown. They just repurposed this song for another scene later.
One of the reasons I began watching One Piece was that the only thing I knew about it was it was on the same channel as Sonic X at one time and when happened to catch an uncensored episode on Toonami Adult Swim, I really began wondering what changes they could’ve made to the show to make it “for kids”. I’m now caught up on the show and love the fact that there was once this version only. Thanks for making this series!

It's kinda crazy how the 4KIDS version is arguably better, at least thematically.
why are the marines from 4kids so op in alabaster with all those water guns
From France... I just don't know HOW THE HELL it was possible to censor One Piece like that...
I mean, yeah in France we got a lot of things censor by changing the name / dub or even cutting the episode but this is just geniously stupid. Changing the music to replace it by this... shitty rap or shitty soundtrack like DBZ is beyond comprehension for me.

It's so bad. Sanji's voice is hilarious, though.
The 4kids dub is unintentionally hilarious, worth a watch just for the dialogue alone 🤣
Ain't no way they thought Kuina getting beaten up by a boy was better than her falling down the stairs 💀
Just like the idea of Bell-mere being... imprisoned in a dungeon forever (And then NOT saved after Arlong Park) is somehow "better" than being shot.
no, you see: it's a good thing they changed it! now no one dies!

Wait, they changed luffy’s first bounty?
@@venomgaming7014 They got rid of everyone's reactions to it except for Shanks, and cut part of his short.

Literally the same thing happened except like 15 years later for me 😭😭 nobody told me

Thank the gods for digital animation lauers.

The journey will be long, but it will be awesome.

Take a shot everytime he says the phrase "has been censored" :)

Also. Thanks for your awesome videos, would be funny to see more videos showing off somewhat random edits and all like that. Heard Pokemon was pretty rough, too.
Let me just say there are many reasons why funimation took one piece from 4kids if you watch you can immediately see why
4kids was in charge of the export that was licensed to other territories, so they made their version blank of most text so they could edit their own text or choose to leave it blank. Most territories imported it from 4kids, rather than Japan, because 4kids is the licensor, so they receive 4kids version. You can tell because the scripts are translations of 4kids texts and contain 4kids edits.
god praise germany for not doing this

Man. Shame that 4Kids didn't continue. I wonder how emotional Brook's promise towards the iceberg would've been!
Maybe not all the hate, but an ounce of forethought would have saved them quite a bit of trouble. so it's maybe partially deserved.
you gotta wonder how shortening he hilt is censoring it when ALL SWORDS LOOK LIKE CROSSES
You know what's the hilarious part? The water guns kinda make sense, if you consider devil fruit weakness.
