i took the line "went to your room thinking youd feel something, but all i found was your burning body waiting" to mean she was in search of an emotional connection with the person but found they only wanted a physical/casual relationship
I interpreted as a disconnection from your own feelings, one can try to go to the room to "feel something" because the room is private and maybe you are more likely to be vulnerable when people are not around.
“And I’ve been a forest fire, I am a forest fire. And I am the fire, and I am the forest, and I am a witness watching it” is such a beautiful way of saying, I am the problem and I am the victim and I am the bystander altogether. Mitski’s lyrical genius is at work.
i think this persepctive. It feels to me like Mitski presents all these stories and situations that tend to happen during one's younger ages, especially during Puberty; Short/Silly love, sex, drugs, questioning her position in society. She uses these metaphors to present depression, insecurities, and loneliness. For example one may listen to Dan the Dancer and think that it's of Mitski's first time, which I'd agree with, yet there are so many layers in which one can interpret the true meaning of this story. I believe this album shows Mitski's harmful mindset in her adulthood, reminiscent of the love and emotion shed feel during her young adulthood , calling it Puberty 2.
This is probably it. Only that rather than reminiscing, all these things are happening right now in the viewer's adulthood. A sort of late bloom situation. Youve already passed through your biological puberty, and youre only experiemcing these things people associate with puberty late into your 20s.
I personally disagree with your interpretation of a burning hill. She's not happy, she's just tired, tired of being disappointed and used. She's going to work, doing boring mundane things and trying to love the little things to fill up that hole. Depression is slowly making her decay she doesn't know herself anymore and doesn't have the energy of doing anything risky because of how scared she is of getting hurt because she KNOWS she wouldn't be able to handle it. She's trying to find happiness in the little things so she doesn't fall apart because she feels she has a responsibility to live and exist but she doesn't feel a purpose
to me Thursday Girl is a girl going out partying on thursdays (already) instead of the socially acceptable times like friday and saturday. She is getting lost in the partying/drug scene and she wants someone to stop her for this/ call her out
i like to think that the album's title comes from how after all this self destruction, she sort of reinvented herself. it was like a metamorphasis - a second puberty. but that also makes me feel pretty fucking defeated. i'm barely 16 and i've had enough. i'm four attempts in ffs. i've been thinking about my future more often lately and it sucks how you can't just turn 18 and magically mature and stop being sad and unpredictable and horny and impulsive and awkward. it seems like this second puberty lasts for most of your twenties but i've already had enough of my first puberty. the lie of maturity i've been told my whole life is being reconstructed and honestly it sucks. sorry for the rant. i just want to be grown.
hi kiddo!! I don't know if this will help at all, but I'm currently 21 (22 this year) and my childhood/teenagehood was terrible. abuse, bullying, poverty, etc. I was planning on ending at 18 actually. but here I am, three years after and I've come to find my life is extraordinarily better. like, so good I didn't think it would ever be this good. I have a partner, a stable job, a lot of my own personal life goals have been met already and I'm only 21. I'm so unbelievably sorry that you're so young and already so burdened with what life has done unto you. you're allowed to be angry, and frustrated, and resentful. but please keep going, because from one chronically mentally ill person to another, it DOES indeed get better. it will take time but the time WILL come and you will thank your past self for still pushing forward. you're a kid, so don't be hard on yourself. the world is hard enough and you need to be your own safe haven. learn, live, please live. you've got a destiny worth fulfilling and someday you will find yourself staring back at the empty void you escaped with nothing but a garden of hope ahead of you. don't worry about meeting anyone else's expectations; when you find yourself at a point where you're satisfied with life and someone criticises it, tell them this - just because your mountain touches more of the sky than mine doesn't mean mine isn't touching it at all. Extraordinary means different things to different people, and nobody but you knows the full context of your life. you're gonna make it, I know it kiddo. with love.
I feel you SO much. Im also 16, close to 17, and mate is this hard. I dont think ive been through that much in life but I may be underestimating it. I dont even know, tried to write something coherent here and ended up about a lot of stuff, but the important part is that I am now reflecting about some things and it kinda made me realize about some of the ways I damage myself, so thanks for commenting and helping a random person 8 months later do something. And thanks for being alive, because it is worth it, for the good moments, for making a good life. Even if those moments are scarce now, they will slowly become more and more frequent, better, you just gotta live to experience them. If some of this helps a bit im glad. If not, Im sorry, just know there is people that ubderstand you, even tho its 1 am and I should really go to sleep, even if our mother tounge is not the same and we are absolute randoms on the Internet, there are people who can relate to you, who can and are willing to understand you, care for you, try to help you. So live to meet them. Live to listen to the next mitski álbum. Live and keep going. Please, stay alive. Sorry for all of this, Just wanted to say something.
CAN YOU POST A VIDEO FOR OTHER ALBUMS TOO?? i've been listening to her music for a long time and since then i believed that the meaning of the songs was personal and it depended on the experiences of the listener but for some songs i cant even build up a storyline and they dont make sense that much so i really wonder the meaning behind them. yes i can look it up but trust me this video was the most clear one compared to what ive read before. ty so so so much!!
I think the best part of happy is that the actual part with happy in it lasts only about 30 seconds, with the remaining time being Mitski wishing about him. It’s the same as the fleeting feeling of happiness (or orgasm) after a night with someone
Puberty 2’s lyricism reminds me a lot of Tidal by Fiona Apple… not necessarily how it’s written but it’s vulnerability. I think it’s just that they describe intimacy with words like “taste” 😅
on thursday girl: she was also born on a thursday (on my birthday) so that could add another layer of destiny and maybe breaking it? at least wanting to... but rather than being triumphant in some glorious (ha) battle, shattering some cross-cultural barrier (what would happen if ybag was resolved), she concedes and take the mundane (littler things) path.. i am so incredibly and respectfully in love with this woman
This was one of my favorite video essays in a while. I loved all of your interpretations, and how you tied them all together with a very distinct editing style (and interspaced humor). I know these videos take a long time to make, but if it means anything I think it was well worth it :)
i do love these interpretations, though i think ascribing them to being autobiographical in most cases can be misleading. in an interview, mitski has said that when she writes, she focuses on a specific feeling and the songs are written to express that feeling as best as possible (rather than pulling from lived experiences) also: this analysis made me realize how much of a heteronormative lens ive been viewing her songs, i didnt even consider a queer perspective on once more to see you but it makes sm sense woah
As a Mitski enjoyer I appreciated this greatly. I'd love to see you annalyse her other albums but I'd definitely understand if you don't want to, they are heavy as fuck.
your best american girl is about being a woman of colour in love with a white man in America xxxx 'the sun' = white american man 'the moon' = beautiful white women 'a star' = unconventionally attractive white woman/very conventionally attractive woc (this has been debated a lot) 'the night' = mitski and other women of colour who share her experience 'you've never seen the night but you hear its song from the morning birds' = you (white man) don't understand the plight of the night (mitski/other woc) but you hear its song from the morning birds (you only partially understand it from media representation, it gets misconstrued, you'll never truly understand me etc 'your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me' = this line is why it cant be about just immigrants, it is specifically about woc/poc because a russian or Italian etc immigrant who meets her boyfriends mother will not be shunned for it, it is more likely that she will be thought of as cute for not understanding the traditions, whilst an asian or black person for example is much more likely to be 'disproved of' by the white mans mother. mitski ofc would want everyone to appreciate and enjoy her music in whatever way they want, but it is necessary to understand and appreciate the intended meaning because it is an important message. for once instead of educationally learning about things like racism we are feeling the raw pain of mitskis experience with not being able to be the 'best american girl' which is very important as it helps us to empathise with her pain. thanks for reading and hope u learnt something new!
pleas please PLEASE do an interpretation of Bury Me at Makeout Creek, I feel like it's got some of mitksi's best songs and some really cool interpretations could be made with them.
this entire album reminds me so much about Aiko Tanaka. it's really sad that she couldn't get away from that rabbit hole and all her story it's hopelessly catastrophic, as well as the rest of the Oyasumi Punpun mangá, in most parts. me as a Mitski fan have a place in my heart for this manga and if you like Mitski as well I recommend you to read it, unless you have some triggers or are in a rock bottom phase of your life, cause it will destroy you, certainly.
My Body is Made of Crushed Little Stars and Burning Hill will always make me cry. My God Mitski is amazing. Beautiful video essay and lyric analysis. :D
The way I’ve interpreted Thursday girl is that she in a hypersexual point in her life and the only way she can feel connected to people is sex but that’s all anyone wants from her they won’t tell her no and sit down with her to find out what’s wrong the on her knees in my head referring to sex but probably also praying
Puberty 2, especially fireworks is without a doubt her masterpiece, I always recommend Puberty 2 to anyone who is new to Mitski because I know that the overpowering emotion and incredible lyricism in every song will completely swallow them. Absolutely her best album.
I went in expecting nothing and learned so many meanings, of course there's things I don't agree with but this was very well done and thank you sm for making it
Just found this channel and watched both of your videos, really good work honestly. Perfect mix of humor and also smart analysis. Definitely earned a subscriber and I’m excited to see what you do in the future if you choose to continue :)
this is such a nice video, I adore mitski because she not only makes beautiful music but also because she is not afraid to talk about topics that some people aren't comfortable with and/or people don't want to accept
love the video, but I think you slightly skimmed over the meaning of Dan the Dancer. I think unlike the rest of the album, it does present sex as something positive in "Clifton"'s life - the whole thing about his "bedroom dancer". beyond the obvious sexual metaphor I think it could also represent some sort of emotional intimacy and closure he finds in his partner.
Honestly i feel like many people interpretating Your best American girl forget that another important thing in that song is how it speaks about being raised by a toxic mother.
I realy loved your analysis on this album, cried for at least half of the video lol, I am susbcribing, hoping you will make a video about her other albums.
also for dan the dancer, interpreted it as whoever is hold “dan’s” hand is eventually going to go down to, and eventually started to crumble after going down with him.
When I first heard my body’s made of crushed little stars, I I thought she was saying “I better erase that interview, I told them that I’m not afraid to die I better erase that interview”
i took the line "went to your room thinking youd feel something, but all i found was your burning body waiting" to mean she was in search of an emotional connection with the person but found they only wanted a physical/casual relationship
I wish I could like this comment a hundred times, Crack baby is my favorite song but I never was able to decode this line, thank you :)
@@32.saibahelal21 my silly little interpretation feels so valued rn ur so sweet :,) !!
That is such a good interpretation. I kind of interpreted it as the person in the room had od and died......
I interpreted as a disconnection from your own feelings, one can try to go to the room to "feel something" because the room is private and maybe you are more likely to be vulnerable when people are not around.

Addition to Thursday girl, mitski was born on a Thursday

was going to say this- I feel it's the opposite of hope or light, more so a surrender or giving up
i love watching depressed people explain an entire mitski album to me, thank u so much
Mitski songs always sound better when you know the meaning.
I interpret Thursday Girl very differently, but maybe that's just because I see it through the prism of my own experiences
how do u interpret it?
