this is going to be a completely hot take and idk what people think, i have over 3,000 listens on this album alone and i am more than confident in saying that laurel hell is not only mitski's best albums by far but also one of the best albums ever created in music history period because not only do i think every song on the album is great but i feel like they also all mix together excellently to make this masterwork which feels like pure art, it portrays mitski's life with her ups and downs with the borderline circus music about certain aspects of her love life more specifically being cheated on to the synthpop about her understanding that people idolize her to the masterwork of heat lighting which i personally think is her best song which tries to explain many things while being in this sleepy and almost hypnotic rhythm. i understand why some people dislike some songs on the album but when it comes to stuff like that it shouldn't be considered as a good or bad album because parts like that are completely subjective, like i'm not a huge fan of last words of a shooting star or thursday girl or two slow dancers, does it mean that it's a worse album, of course not, some people love those songs, it isn't for me to judge, the only reason why i consider laurel hell to be her best album is because it is incredibly consistent yet so diverse, each song talks about a personal part of mitski's life but each song and their respective meaning take a different approach genre wise and at the end of it, the album is this theatrical masterpiece, with the rest of her albums she focuses on usuall one or two. be the cowboy feels heavily inspired from your standard pop music, bury me at makeout creek feels inspired from your rock/grunge music while puberty 2 is a hybrid of the 2 genres, while i can't place a finger on what genre lush is, rather than a genre, the atmosphere feels rather dark in general in the entirety of the album, the closest album that comes to versatility outside of laurel hell is tried from sad new career in business but also keep in mind the hot take part, i just find the songs in laurel hell to be generally better, this is subjective of course and i love songs like strawberry blonde, square and because dreaming cost money my dear but i just prefer laurel hell more i'm sorry
'valentine, texas' I think is the best song of hers, of all time. maybe tied with 'a burning hill'. not only is the instrumentation and melody so evocative, but the lyrics are so good. imo, lyrically it represents finally showing someone you care about, a partner/friend/family the deepest, darkest parts of yourself (ie mental illness(es)/trauma(s)) and having that experience release you from your demons. and separately, the last two lines in particular, "clouds look like mountains / let me watch those mountains from underneath / maybe they'll finally float off of me" is incredibly personal to me. (TW sussycide) until very recently I'd been extremely ill and during that period I had wanted nothing more than to commit s-ide; as in, maybe if I give in and let my sorrow consume me my suffering will end and I will find the peace I've been searching for my whole life. but yeah. puberty 2 and BMAMC are absolutely her two best albums lol.

Each to their own I guess. Laurel Hell is one of my favourite albums. Love every move. Has Bowie Tonight vibes in places. Its almost impenetrable in places, but i love that.
i actually agree w this, i feel like the bottom 2 is kinda indisputable. puberty 2 is my favorite and that's our lamp is a good song. also we had a lot of the same top 3 songs, i bet on losing dogs, old friend, and a pearl are my favorite songs, but working for the knife is my all time favorite its so overhated
the reason laurel hell is lower than puberty 2 but is higher is bc I feel like laurel hell is a more consistent album (no skips and all the songs are good) whereas with puberty 2, it has more highs but the lows are LOW.. so yeah while puberty 2 is “better”, but it also has more flaws
