Yanny heaven fans are in such denial. It’s her easiest album to listen to. That doesn’t make it good - the songwriting is bland and uninteresting throughout most of the album. But of course, most mitski fans love her worst songs so seeing how many of them love that album is not surprising

your best american girl is about being a woman of colour in love with a white man in America xxxx 'the sun' = white american man 'the moon' = beautiful white women 'a star' = unconventionally attractive white woman/very conventionally attractive woc (this has been debated a lot) 'the night' = mitski and other women of colour who share her experience 'you've never seen the night but you hear its song from the morning birds' = you (white man) don't understand the plight of the night (mitski/other woc) but you hear its song from the morning birds (you only partially understand it from media representation, it gets misconstrued, you'll never truly understand me etc 'your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me' = this line is why it cant be about just immigrants, it is specifically about woc/poc because a russian or Italian etc immigrant who meets her boyfriends mother will not be shunned for it, it is more likely that she will be thought of as cute for not understanding the traditions, whilst an asian or black person for example is much more likely to be 'disproved of' by the white mans mother. mitski ofc would want everyone to appreciate and enjoy her music in whatever way they want, but it is necessary to understand and appreciate the intended meaning because it is an important message. for once instead of educationally learning about things like racism we are feeling the raw pain of mitskis experience with not being able to be the 'best american girl' which is very important as it helps us to empathise with her pain. thanks for reading and hope u learnt something new!
