I love the Galor class. A very functional design, with a monster primary weapon. I love the loading bay on the belly of the ship, with doors at the fore and aft. I would have adored seeing this warship settled on a planet surface, offloading troops en masse. I have to say though (and I've noticed this kind of thing a lot in your episodes) if you think this ship can only fire that one weapon and it has no others, you really haven't been paying attention
11:17 that Galor was firing from the top out at the peregrine fighter & the bright explosion is one being destroyed. The dull explosions on the Cardassian hull are coming from torpedo hits of the fighters. I regard Hideki class as frigates as they seem to operate in units of 1-3. They are much to large to enter a shuttle bay. I think they are roughly dominion bug ship sized. I recall one exploding on DS9's shields around the habitat of inner ring whereas a cruiser would of done much more damage in a collision.
I like the Galor, i always thought it was one of the most under appreciated ships. it is different yet functional looking i just wish they didn't get blown up so much.
The warp nacelles are located at the tips of the "wings". We see it in the TNG episode " chain of command part 2" where Data is showing Jellico a sensor scan of the Galor glass, and he pointed out the nacelles. We only see it for a few seconds, just thought I'd share.
1. Front and aft doors were troop deployment / Huge cargo doors. Cardassians exploited and subjected worlds for natural resources due to largely depleting their own. So the move in, deploy troops, create forced labour out of the natives and transported the raw goods out. 2. As with all cardassian design it's Egyptian in origin. Even the cardassian head 'spoon' was derived from the animal symbol worn to the front of the forehead of the headpieces of the Pharaohs. That's why on close analysis you see small pyramid like shapes on DS9 and other cardassian vessels. 3. Cardassians are desert like dwellers, they made numerous reference to loving the heat, etc, look at cardassia at the end of DS9 you can see the desert like planet. Therefore their ship colour came from that. Probably for the same reason earth desert military combat uniforms have a similar colour pallet. Why is starfleet grey? What colour are earth navy ships currently? Greys, why? Grey blends well between sea & sky
This ship always made me think: Easier to produce than other major alpha quadrant civilization's ships but uncomfortable. Really single purpose of being a warship. They seem to depend on having a few of them together in formation instead of depending on a lot of maneuver and pure individual power. Which is what a ship design needs to be when you are trying to hold together an empire by force (from your own people and those you conquered) while that empire is kind of on the declining path. That declining empire also happens to be surrounded by other civilizations with more powerful economies and slight technological advantages. So it ends up being a stripped down but well armored/armed ship, that the shipyards can build quickly and not taking a lot of personal to operate all at the same time. Trying to maximize what you have with more limited resources while still maintaining your strength on equal footing with those around you. Just my 2 cents though.
I always thought the Galor design had something between a catfish and a Gila monster or horned lizard sort of design. The latter would make sense due to the Cardassians being a scaled, possibly reptilian species from what appears to be a very hot, arid planet. Definitely a fan of the Cardassians, though that's because I watched DS9 before TNG. I didn't like how throwaway the Galor felt as a ship, just a menacing non-federation hull to carry off-color beams and threaten the heroic humans, and would've appreciated a bit more love thrown their way, but I loved the design and the thought that went into it. The Cardies felt very much like a nationalistic military state, so having their go-to ship of the line be designed to resemble their insignia, their national icon, it speaks a good deal about the Cardassians as a people.
This video almost made me not like you guys..... The Galor class is my second favorite ship in all of Star Trek (second only to the Galaxy Dreadnought Refit from All Good Things). It is a very sleek and interesting design. The color and style made it instantly recognizable. I've always been a fan of the Cardassians ever since their first appearance. All of the Cardassian ships are built off of the same skeleton structure of this ship. The Keldon is just a Galor class with some extra decks and armor built up on it. That picture of the Galor getting shot in the warp core is from the big battle when the Federation alliance was trying to break the line to retake DS9 before the minefield came down. It was a joint effort between the Federaton and their allies. That shot is likely coming from one of the allied ships.
It looks like to me a scorpion. Just put claws on front and the tail looks like it has two stingers on the back. On deep space 9 their words look very much like Egypt writing. Makes one wonder.
Always thought this was one of the more interesting designs from TNG. To my mind, it has a somewhat fish-like feel, but is fairly reminiscent in feel of the old Spanish galleons for some reason. I do get the reptilian feel, though I've always thought of that colour as a matt gold/ yellow. The whole design feels very utilitarian and 'military'. The primary weapon right at the front ( why would all races have deflector arrays that look like the federation's? I reckon the orange glowy bits are the nav deflectors) and a fairly small forward silhouette. I would reckon it has other defensive weapons about the hull, certainly the games do give it additional hardpoints all over its hull. You mentioned it firing from the wingtips: yes, I remember that too, but can't tell you when/what show that was. I can tell you that most games give it hardpoints there. Lastly, I reckon the 'Warp Core' would actually be further back in the tail, near the pincer-like 'nacelles'. Why have it the other end of the vessel? Or somewhere so vulnerable? This vessel's design aesthetics, in my opinion, are all about facing towards the enemy and mass fleet warfare.
I see the pincer at the back being like the stinger of the scorpion. It’s inspired by the Egyptian ankh and the colours give me desert sand so scorpion makes sense. It’s also a good animal for the cardassians!
This ship always reminded me of a lizard. If you look at a lizard that is standing, head alert it has that same sort of tapering with the bridge being the head.
Ok from a long time Cardassian fan some thoughts I have. Spiral wave disruptors could be phased or plasma generated. The ship looks and as is stated in early episodes, "they hunt in packs" remind me of sharks! I have a model and see the main forward array as a dual use deflector/cannon mount with two launchers below for torpedoes. I am impressed that you pointed out the what i will say is cargo holds under the wing, but yes the main shuttle bay is fore facing. The top of the main hull bubble in at least one fight scene is a dual disruptor mount. I see the warp reactor and nacelles in the foreword wings, the pincer to me is the impulse engines.
Another fine episode from Trek yards, surprised these isn’t one of your favourites, as I would put it in my top ten Enemies/Villain ships. I do have one small annoyance, Would the Commander please cross reference his eagle-moss magazine for these shows where he has the model as he tends to ask questions that they have answered, for example, the spiral-wave disruptor locations. Why do you find it odd that the Cardassians main navigational deflector doubles as a weapon like the Romulan D’Deridex or Enterprise D in best of both worlds? Anyway keep up the good work here hoping to see the Breen or more Xindi ships in 2016.
+James Oldfield If i looked at the magazines before then there would be no questions as we would know most of it, we like to come to these episodes with any knowledge we already knew so we can try and dissect and ask the right questions that we can then answer in full when we take a look at the details, hence a discussion show :).
Two things I noticed, while looking at the LCARS display, that you guys didn't mention. First off is that there appears to be a line of disruptors in the spine of the ship, just behind the Warp Core (they aren't labelled, but they are the same color as the disruptors in the tail section). The second is you didn't mention that the Primary Bridge section has an impulse engine sticking out of it. So yeah, there is a strong likelihood that it can separate.
5:30 Regarding the main disruptor cannon being marked as a navigational deflector, I dont think thats necessarily a mistake. Federation starships can use their deflector dish to fire almost any type of particle or energy beam, in the episode Starship Down the Defiant used the Deflector as a jury-rigged phaser even. In my opinion it might just be that the Cardassians realized at some early point that a deflector dish can so easily be rigged into a powerful main weapon (as in you can easily dump a shitload of energy into it and blast something with it), so they decided to actually use their deflector AS a weapon, which eventually turned into a common feature of starship design for them the same way as a saucer section is common on federation ships. Also, I do imagine the Galor class having secondary, less powerful phaser banks (actually its really confusing, i recall most often cardassian weapons being called phasers, not disruptors) spread across the hull to give full or nearly full coverage against anything maneuverable enough to move out of the main weapons firing arc. There are even a few shots where these secondary beam weapons were shown.
I love the Cardassians in Star Trek, I'm not a big fan of the Galor Class, I'm more a fan of the small Hideki Class. But it Looks like a powerful ship, and as a Starfleet officer you know when you are facing one, it's gone be one hell of a Battle. And in Star Trek Online there one of the best ships around and there very expensive on the Exchange with Prices over 200 Million EC.Love your episodes and grettings from Austria :-)
Loved blowing these up in ST: Bridge Commander; go in with a spin to use all phaser arcs, then unload three quantum torpedoes directly on that exposed warp-core. Fun times. :']
With the red and yellow glowy bits at the front it always seemed to me like the ship was originally designed to have the bulkier end be the back and the pincer end be the front. So the red deflector/beam weapon was originally its impulse engine, and for whatever reason it got flipped.
Will you guys be doing a video about the Keldon class. It's the same length as the Galor, but taller and wider. 15 of them were used by the Obsidian Order to attack the Founder's Home world, along with the 5 D'deridex class warbirds owned by the Tal Shiar on the DS9 episode: The Die is Cast.
I like seeing it portrayed as being more yellow(actual show images) than orange (Eaglemoss). I have the EM version but would like to get the AMT kit that has it so I can paint it the correct color.
I've always thought the galor was beautiful in an ugly way, much like most snakes. It's got a head, a neck that fans out as if to threaten agressors, a fat belly like it's eaten prey, and a tail that almost appears to have a scorpions' stinger. Underated brilliance.
I found myself wondering something recently- what would a Federation defined by centuries of on/off conflict/friendship with The Cardassians, rather than The Klingons, look like?
Is it possible to discuss the Cardassian Carrier and Cardassian Fighters from STO? If so, could you also discuss the possible connection to Alpha/Beta continuity?
I wish the major powers had a larger diversity of ship classes. The Federation had dozens of classes. But with the Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, all you saw were 2 or 3 different classes.
-No Sam. The Galor was NEVER meant to go against the Galaxy Class. It's likely only 340 meters long and Galaxy's mutilate this ship with just phasers. I'm amazed I've grown to Trekyards content. Ship discussion and their creators. I never regret watching it.
+saquist I'd say the Galor is equal to an Excelsior class, we saw what happened to the Galor when 2 Galaxy class ships zeroed in on it with those broadsides
+Blood Raven In TNG, Picard makes it clear that a standard Galor is no match for a Galaxy class, even if the Galor gets a hit in with their shields down. I think you're right that it's probably equal to an Excelsior class....ships of the line of a previous generation. The Keldon class was probably a direct response to the superiority of a Galaxy class over the standard Galor.
+Rare VHS uploads I've flown against the galors on STO in my Excelsior, always an interesting fight. In an actual fight, I'd say the excelsior has the protection and fire power advantage but the galor seems to have the speed advantage so in effect it's down to captain's skill to decide the winner
This was a ship I hated too... until the final episodes of DS9. I liked the cobra-like design aesthetic... but I always thought of the ship was an "adequate" enemy vessel and didn't think much of it. I liked it about as much as the Ferengi Marauder... which means I didn't really like it. It wasn't until the shot (3:43 in this video) from the DS9 finale when the Cardassians turned on the Dominion and one Galor class ship is depicted heroically firing on Jem'Hadar ships that I started to take an interest in the ship and wondered what an episode of "Star Trek: Cardassians" would be like. I could then imagine this ship playing the part of a "hero" the same way that the Klingon Bird Of Prey can work as either a heroic or villain ship.
My own dislike of the ship came from the concept of the warp nacelles being embedded. Even the Ferengi warp nacelles are still distinct even if tight against their hull. The Galor just does not look like it would work by the parameters established by the Star Trek's milieu's technology givens.
You guys changed the channel name on me...couldn't figure out why I couldn't find "Stuart Foley" in my subscriptions... :) I always liked the Galor but I guess I'm in the minority. I seem to recall seeing a disruptor/phaser firing from the bussard collector, but I thought that was in "Caretaker" Voyager premiere)
Unique and gainly profile. Think it could’ve been better if it’s internal setup is better understood. Overall this design has yet to reach its full potential
I always assumed spiral wave disrupters was a way of making disrupters more stable and therefore had a longer range then say a klingon disrupter that could rely on getting in close with it's cloak, which the cardassian's obviously didn't have as standard.
The conceptual Galor drawing design by Rick Sternbach looks far better than the model. And the little glowing pyramids on the ship are disruptors; something akin to phaser strips on Starfleet vessels.
my main beef with the aesthetic of that ship is the front upper part that is literally obscuring the firing arc of the main phaser array - it hinders the ability to shoot "upwards". - other than that its quite sleek design with relatively small frontal attack profile.
Just 3d printed one, I'm doing as many star trek ships as possible, wanted to do to scale, but I did this one way too big (it ended up same size as my 1701D which is actually almost twice as long in scale, and for some reason I always feel like they should flew "pincer first" like to me they look as if they are flying in reverse.
+Trekyards when you do the main one. Look up Star Trek Hidden Frontier, they use the hanger one of their Season 7 episodes. Yes it's a fan series, but it's still being used. It does take a Hideki Class in it as well.
I'm sorry Rick, I just don't like this ship by itself, but when its grouped up with the Dominion and Cardi fleet they look better. Like what Barney said in How I Met Your Mother, its the Cheerleader Effect; where a group of women would look hot but if you single each one out they're actually not hot but ugly. That's how I feel about the Cardi ships...Please don't send the Obsidian Order after me Rick! And Cpt Foley, to my knowledge the Cardi ship didn't fire from the wings, mainly from the crystal.
+Captain Lokiawa I would have to agree with you on that, all ships look good in a fleet. Even the ships that I don't like look good to me when I see them flying with others.
And in no way is this ship meant to go to to toe with a Galaxy class. Picard is smirking when a Galor attacks the Enterprise. Again, watch some Star Trek.
Cardassians is one of my absolute favorite Star Trek races. They were very dynamic on screen.
For whatever reason, the Cardassian ships became my favorite. I also love how its silhouette is their national emblem.
The Galor is one of my fave, I love the Cardassian ships, I absolutely would love to have a Galor in STO but their so expensive to buy
Skyla Jade Forster sorry but what means STO
star trek online
I love the Galor class. A very functional design, with a monster primary weapon. I love the loading bay on the belly of the ship, with doors at the fore and aft. The spiral wave disruptors according to Star Trek Online are a mix of disruptor and phaser energy
1. Front and aft doors were troop deployment / Huge cargo doors. Cardassians exploited and subjected worlds for natural resources due to largely depleting their own. So the move in, deploy troops, create forced labour out of the natives and transported the raw goods out.

Galor has long been my favorite of the alien ships.
I can’t believe I’m just now seeing this episode. It’s fantastic!
Looks like there is an impulse engine attached to the main bridge area, supporting the idea of being detachable.
This ship always made me think:

Anyone notice that the "claw" on the end of the "tail" looks very similar to the bridge on the Klingon Vorcha?
The Ships looks like a backwards flying Vor`Cha
Yeah, when I first saw the Galor Class ships, I thought it was flying backwards! =)
It looks like to me a scorpion. Just put claws on front and the tail looks like it has two stingers on the back. On deep space 9 their words look very much like Egypt writing. Makes one wonder.

always thoght this ship looks like its stingray inspired
cobra snake..... the cardassian are reptiles
definitely a ray I was half expecting the Cardasians to be amphibians the first time I saw their ship
Looks like a scorpion to me with it's claws cut off.
STO has Cardis using phasers. On screen the beams also look orange and not green.
Galor is brilliant looking
And the fork bit at the back is also a weapon platform
They did fire from minor emitters on the underbelly, wing tips, and tips of their "cobra head"in Caretaker (VOY).
Ok from a long time Cardassian fan some thoughts I have. Spiral wave disruptors could be phased or plasma generated. Primal Cardassians probably looked like a cobra snake that may be why there ships look like a snake.
Two things I noticed, while looking at the LCARS display, that you guys didn't mention. Love this ship like anything else abuot the cardassians
5:30
Regarding the main disruptor cannon being marked as a navigational deflector, I dont think thats necessarily a mistake. Federation starships can use their deflector dish to fire almost any type of particle or energy beam, in the episode Starship Down the Defiant used the Deflector as a jury-rigged phaser even. It looks like it needs to fly backwards and land on a pyramid in the desert.

It may not be pretty but the Galor is definately iconic.
How does one acquire the rank "Captain". Good video guys, the huge primary weapon was always interesting on this ship in DS9 for me.
With the red and yellow glowy bits at the front it always seemed to me like the ship was originally designed to have the bulkier end be the back and the pincer end be the front. So the red deflector/beam weapon was originally its impulse engine, and for whatever reason it got flipped.
And for whatever reason it got flipped.
Probably to look less like a Vorcha.
It would make more sense if it wasn't meant to be a
King Cobra.
The Tamarians (Children of Tama, "Darmok" episode) seemed to give the Enterprise D a licking. Maybe a video on that ship?
Will you guys be doing a video about the Keldon class. It's the same length as the Galor, but taller and wider. 15 of them were used by the Obsidian Order to attack the Founder's Home world, along with the 5 D'deridex class warbirds owned by the Tal Shiar on the DS9 episode: The Die is Cast.
yes, the galor class did fire form the wing tips I believe it was in voyager on the first episode.....I think.
I like seeing it portrayed as being more yellow(actual show images) than orange (Eaglemoss). I have the EM version but would like to get the AMT kit that has it so I can paint it the correct color.

Well....STO is hardly indicative of a ship's actual firepower. It's highly customizable and dependent on your character's chosen skill set.

I figure due to the radiation in space any colour would be stripped from a ships hull which is why they are made grey.
it fires from the top as well (in the sacrifice of angels when the peregrines make a bomber run against them)
Side profile just makes me think, Quack, Quack, Quack, Donald in space...
Would love to see you do a mission briefing on the U.S.S. Titan.

I would have liked to have seen more of the Keldon class ships during the Dominion War. I hope eaglemoss will make model of it.
I always loved this design, reminds me of a stingray or something. RIP Steve Erwin.
Also known as the cannon fodder class.
i love the galor. its like the ugly duckling that never got to become a swan.
was there a full episode released for this?
ah the Galor class... the glass cannon of the Cardassians.
I seem to recall seeing a disruptor/phaser firing from the bussard collector, but I thought that was in "Caretaker" Voyager premiere)
at 14:45 those doors n the bottom view go straight to the cargo bay... So they're cargo bay doors, not shuttle bay doors.
I always felt it looked like some kind of alien bottom feeder sea creature
I always thought of the Galor as a scorpion.
I like the Galor class it's different.
The warp reactor being at the top isn't really that different from federation ships where it's right at the bottom which is just as easy to hit.
I somehow liked that ships... Looked always like a skate to me.
Bottom is also cargo bay... So I guess cargo doors. See alcar.
You know what that ship looks like. It looks like a stingray.
great video
Lol designed to go up against a Galaxy Class starship? Yeah right as they became Target Practice for Nebula Class starships.
Also A ship That I'd like to see is the Qib intel battle cruiser.
it always brings to mind a whale or some sort of sea creature for me.
i would love to see a Vulcan Ship, why are there almost none?
I'm pretty sure federation core members have long since stopped using there own ships. There were star fleet ships that were pure Vulcan after all.
Wow I thought they looked like an Earwig to!
You could say that the Cardassians has a hood (neck) to.
If you think the Galor class is cool, you should an episode on the Keldon class.
It's a Hammerhead shark
it looks like Ray that had been lizarded.
When is a Defiant Class video due?
Before January
+Trekyards when you do the main one. Look up Star Trek Hidden Frontier, they use the hanger one of their Season 7 episodes. Yes it's a fan series, but it's still being used. It does take a Hideki Class in it as well.
the flying lizard
The Order never had these Ships.
Looks like a fish or skate.
has phasers, not disruptors
hi can help you build a new starshit pls i am a big fan of startrek ship
looks like a scorpion
Looks like a crossbow
Cardassian ships look like fish
lol...you hate the cobra like profile of a ship that was made by a race of serpent-like aliens?...hmmm
Never liked it, and the front and back doors are cargo bay doors, the higher ones on the side are shuttle bay doors.
Do you guys not watch Star Trek???? There are battles where you see beams coming from different parts of the ship.
*Picard facepalm
And in no way is this ship meant to go to to toe with a Galaxy class. Picard is smirking when a Galor attacks the Enterprise.
Again, watch some Star Trek.
And in Canon in dialog (TNG) it is said that Galors have PHASERS.
kinda looks like its giving birth to a vorcha :)
+Doktor L yep :)
Never liked how the ships looked exactly like the symbol. A bit too on the nose for me.
