    Tuvok has a throwaway line in voyager's Scorpion episode that makes me wonder if the ships are partially grown hence the curves\blades and why they vary in size up to a point.
    "Starfleet has encountered species that use organic-based
    vessels. The Breen, for example. "
    An organic process would create some non-symmetrical and unusual shapes.

    The crazy Breen. It was really cool having them brought into the Star Trek universe in such a dramatic way. Though, I always thought that it was a shame the Tholians and the Gorn weren't brought into the war in some way.

    Foley has a strange taste.. The Breen ship is a VERY COOL design because it is so wierd and alien like. It just adds up to the unknwon race that the Breen were/are. I like these ships!

    I like the design. Looks truly alien - just like the Breen. I like that the Breen's appearance was more then some dude with a weird forehead. They actually tried something different there.
    If I remember correctly, we saw a holding cell on board the Breen ship. Ezri and Worf were being help hostage as "gifts to the Dominion". Season seven episode, 'Til Death To Us Part'.

      It's lack of symmetry makes it very alien looking. I still think the Borg renegade ship is the best none symmetrical design in Trek.

    • @johnmichaelarnaud
      @johnmichaelarnaud 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My favorite ship in the universe. Most of the humanoid species we've seen gravitate toward symmetry, and I love that some species, like the Breen, don't. Which reinforces the idea that our predilections aren't universal.

  • @drewjackson3858
    @drewjackson3858 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Breen ship is kinda symmetrical on it's side. I really like that. Purposefully hidden symmetry. Weird stuff like that on an alien ship makes me think how their perspective is different from the human one. Maybe the Breen evolved in tunnels and developed a much more horizontally oriented point of view. Stuff like that.

    I actually like the asymmetrical design of the Breen ships. Those and the Klingon designs are my favorite from Trek-verse. Strangely enough I don't like most of the Federations designs (blasphemy I know, sue me); the saucer, secondary hull, nacelle designs just don't grab me most of the time.

    One of the cooler looking alien ships, imo. Wish they got more involved with the Breen during the shows. Although, the mystery behind them was part of what was cool about them. Remember, never turn your back on a Breen! lol

    I get the feeling this ship's 'design' was expedited and less thought was put into it, still one of my favorite designs from the show, to be honest. Can't wait for the more researched and discussed full episode. Granted its a shame you don't like the design of the ship too much but this is definitely a 'not for everyone' design. Though some of the pictures you used definitely aren't fairly good representations.
    I always got the impression the energy dissipation weapon was fired from much closer to the deflector, and the very overt 'weapon pods' at the tip of each blade contained both torpedos and disruptors or some more alien energy weapons. Also, the design (And the open pods and openness of the ship) made me think that there was a lot of modular components. Maybe the pods allow for weapons to be switched out easily, and similarly maybe ship parts are constructed and assembled separately allowing forsimilar and more varied designs.

    I think the separate curves are modular in nature. When they design a new weapon they don't have to build a new ship, just a new module to attach to the ship.
    I think the Breen themselves are actually energy beings like the ones that took over Troi, Data and O'Brien in Power Play, so they just inhabit and control bodies they capture like the Gould from Star Gate. I think this is why they joined the war, capturing Fed worlds would be a great opportunity to expand. When Worf commented that 3 Klingon Warships tried to conquer the Breen home world and were never heard from again, well, if you take off the Breen suits, some of them will be very old Klingons or other species, that's why they wear the Suits, to keep their true nature as energy beings secret.
    Some species may be immune, like the Ferengi (Batazoids can't read them so Breen can't inhabit them), that's why they traded with them instead.

  • @Ramschat

    I'm pretty sure its first appearance was as a prison transport for Worf and Ezri Dax, not blowing up the Defiant. Am I right?

    I like this ship because it's not a "standard" Star Trek ship design. I used to collect the Star Trek: Card Collectible Game until I lost my entire collection when I moved. They mentioned that the Breen Battleship was an organic-based ship (similar to a bio-ship). In the ST:CCG mechanics, your Breen personnel cards can "report to duty" directly onto this ship (like the Borg) instead at an outpost (like other races). In a ST:Voyager episode, Tuvok mentions the Federation has encountered species was organic based ships, like the Breen. What does that mean? Is the ship alive??? Are they "living weapons"? Oh, well (how deep?), kudos on this very interesting video and keep up with the great work you do!!!!

    I know this comment is three years too late, but I have to say that the design of some Breen ships reminds me of old iron-sides ship. Not in design itself, but in purpose. Turned to one side; the ablative armor and minimal systems of that one side minimizes damage from head on attacks. Meaning that fighters and other things can be released from a safe bay on the reverse side; While also meaning that weapons systems on that forward facing side can hammer enemies. That's just speculation and theory though.

    I was, at first sight, too busy weeping to take in the design. (THEY KILLED MY SECOND-FAVORITE SHIP!!!! 😭😬😭😬)
    Looking at it now... kinda nice. Different. The designer realized that starships *don't* have to be aerodynamic. As for the lack of nacelles - monies I don't have say that it doesn't even have warp drive as we know it.
    And detachable parts are a possibility, but I personally doubt that. I want to say that the Federation is the only power that actually allows for detachment for escape purposes. Klingons, Romulans and Dominion ships usually fight to the death.
    And stop.
    Stopstopstopstop.
    *Why* does a Breen warship have a Naval Construction Code number????

    Before we ever saw the Breen ship, we were told they used organic ships, had some sort of cloak, and disrupters. Did any of that continue into DS9? I would like to think they have a weak cloak that allowed them to get to Earth for that raid..

    The asymmetrical design reminds me of Kilrathi ship designs from Wings Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger. Prince Thrakhath's fighter the Bloodfang was so baddass looking and a total pain in the ass to fight, I'd sneak up on him cloaked, uncloak then unload all weapons point blank to save 5-10 minutes of dogfighting.
    Damn spell check!.

  • @Dazzxp
    @Dazzxp 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Weyoun says their home world is quite mild in temperature indicating the suites they have is not refrigeration. Seen other videos to think that they are to move water about their body as they have no circular vascular system kinda like a jellyfish and possible the suites are used so they can leave the water for extended periods of time. Thus semi or full aquatic maybe the universal translator doesn't work on them either.
    Anyway i like the asymmetrical design, it is after all for space flight with no air resistance and warp travel create a bubble around it anyway.

  • @90lancaster
    @90lancaster 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Universe it seems to fit in somewhat better is in my view the 'Aliens' one.
    Though if you believe the Star Trek Novels view of the Breen then they have a number of diverse species forced to dress and sound alike to prevent prejudice.
    So speaking 'in universe' terms the legacy influence of several races could be said to be present in the ships design... or to put it another way... It's a space ship designed by committee.

    The Breen ship looks like it was built by committee. It utilises an organic structure, and so quite alien you would have thought the designers wanted it too be. However rather than going completely down this route, a la Alien space jockey ship or (whispers) The Vorlons, it seems to have been squeezed into the whole Star Trek aesthetic vision. The result of this is a patchwork, hodgepodge of concepts in one model, and for this reason, doesn't really work for me.

    I don't find you're reasons why it doesn't seem Star Trekish very compelling. Remember, not every vessel seen in ST carries that basic Federation design motif. You have the simple prismatic looking design of the Tholians, the cubic configuration of the Borg, the cigar shapes of the Doomsday Machine and the Probe from ST IV, etc. I love this ship and how alien it is. The first time you see it in DS 9 it's a great pan away reveal with some serious WTF vibes going on.

And not only that but Trekyards never do reviews on ships they are entertaining videos that are discussion shows about the ships and tech of Star Trek. Personally I really enjoy seeing their initial views about a ship before the do the research just to see the initial impressions, then when the full episode comes out you can see all the full information and even see where their thoughts may have been wrong etc. If you look at some of the full episodes where they even bring on the designers you may change your mind and enjoy the show?
