funny, this guy Hiram is the stereotype of immigrant's sons who is ashamed and makes everything to attack his parents country. if life is cheap in usa is because they have the low skilled jobs done by a still cheap labor force. stupid people like hiram doesn't know how economics work, if you pay everybody a lot, simply the price of everything would become expensive, just watch japan, even the homeless people make a lot of money and they cannot afford a decent life.

hooray for you wanting cheap labor , exploiting these people . None of what you posted applies to my previous comment . I said the illegals contracting the work have no licence. The illegals that work for license contractors get paid in cash or use a fraudulent means to get work . You don't live near the border so I wouldn't expect you to know how things work around here . You may travel the streets in your area , and perhaps see no Mexicans, oppose to the SW you might see them more than any other race . To say Mexicans do work that others don't want is a misconception in the SW and Calif, its called demographics

His restaurants are all in the San Francisco Bay Area, where housing is extremely expensive and working full time at a restaurant that pays you minimum wage (and even above minimum) won't cut it for anyone, immigrant or non-immigrant. The Bay area needs to address its housing crisis for the working/blue collar class people or the very wealth off Bay Area residents need to get accustom to paying higher prices for goods.

In my generation we all dream about going to the U.S. to work and earn money , but it was never to stay there , I started goin there in the early 90s back then it was soo easy and cheap to get across I know because I did it for soo many years, and soo many times, I worked in the food industry for many years I remember one time I was working in a restaurant some where in California and emigration came in and arrested mi and some other workers, and my boss was soo sad and practically begin the emigration officer to let us go and the emigration officer just laughed and said to him dont worry this guy will be back here in a couple of days, and that is the way it was back in those days, I remember when I saw the officer come in I was soo happy, cause I been working two full-time jobs for about a year, I had save a good chunk of money and I was ready for a good vacation ,I was happy to get deported, the U.S. was a diferente place back in those days , but as it got harder to get across the border that's when we decided to just stay there but not only that we started to bring every body else with us , girlfriend, wifes, kids, brothers, the U.S. it's and amazing country I will always be grateful for all the years and all the the experiences that I lived while a was there ,not to mention the opportunities, back in those days when people ask us how did you get here to the U.S. and we told them how you had to leave your family, your girlfriend, your friend, your life, to go soo far to a diferente land where they spoke diferente ,where the food was diferente ,where you had to risk your life swimming across the rio grand , freezing in the desert, or asfixiating in the trunk of a car just to work and earn some money and make some dreams come true, well , people used to admire that, they didn't see you as invader as a criminal, things change some people in the U.S. are realy stupid, you know I have a friend, he does very well, he has big big machines , soo he needed some new machines for his business, a very expensive one, soo he went to the U.S. to buy it , I think some where in the south soo after he did his business he went to a store to buy some things for his kids and he had the misfortune of running into some mega hat wearing stupid fools that for not reason started calling him all kinds on names, you can imagine what kind of names, I decided some years back that the U.S. was not for me, that the American dream was just to boring for me , soo I left everything behind and came back to Mexico with cero money ,cero luggage , I started from cero, now days I have a very successful business and I'm making it I love Mexico and there is nothing that will make me want to go back to the U.S. in fact sometimes I have dreams that I'm back there and I weak up in sweat as if it was a nightmare, and is not that the U.S. is a bad place, it's just that for me Mexico is better

@randy miller It's easy to say "pay more" when you don't take into account the low profit margins that plague the restaurant business in general. You don't always have the luxury of having additional capital to increase worker salary. Unless you have seen this company's income statement and have looked at their retained earnings, you should think before posting.

randy miller I see you lack the slightest bit of business acumen as you've missed the core problem at hand, entirely. The native population sees itself (for the most part) as being too good for those jobs to begin with. Immigrants coming in from poverty see those jobs as an opportunity. However, as immigration slows, coupled with the aforementioned views held by the native population, it creates a difficult to fill vacuum in the hospitality industry.

Obvious questions not addressed in this video: (1) What is the pay rate of the average employee of the business covered in this video (2) are they paying any kind of benefits to their employees and (3) what is the average work hours for the employees? Is it that they can't find employees, or they can find employees that will work for the wages they offer? All these facts are left out of this video. Come on WSJ gives us ALL the facts here, not just ones that appear to support a pro-illegal immigrant stance.

Hi, Dalton my husband and I live in Chihuahua Mexico. When we visited Los Angeles we noticed all of the latinos doing the labor jobs. I suppose they pay them very little and make them run around. However, I realized the Americans hire them because it's a cheap labor force. If they replaced them with American workers to pick the fields, do housekeeping, clean cars etc the American workers would demand good pay and benefits. These owners cannot afford that and make a profit. I never understood why Americans get mad at latinos working. They should demand to speak to the owner and get mad at the owner for hiring them. The owner knows the laws so shame on him! The owner should consider hiring high school students. I am not sure how hard high school American students work and if they can keep up with the pace of being cooks and field workers though.

My husband and I are from Chihuahua Mexico. We are the Mexicans that had enough to go to a universidad. When we visited Los Angeles and stayed in a hotel we were shocked to see how many latinos were employed in housekeeping. Every restaurant we went to had latino cooks. It is evident Mexicans do the the labor jobs for such little wages. I doubt the Americanos would do those jobs, that fast and efficient, for such little pay. Lets just say they hire gringos to do housekeeping, work the fields, clean cars, etc.. what would happen? These companies would have to pay them a lot more and the prices would go up. I guarantee there would be a lot more lawsuits as well. Unfortunately you need them do the dirty work for such little pay. On another note, if the gringos don't want them here then why do they employ them? They should employ high school students to work the fields. Don't get mad at the Mexican working, get mad at the gringo owner who employed him. I have yet to see a viral video of a gringo yelling at another gringo to only employ gringos to do housekeeping, clean cars, work the fields, warehouse workers, nannies, etc..

it's funny how people bark and say pay more and I take the job!! but when it comes to actually get dirty and work hard, they forget they wanted the job or they just say hire Americans but they want other Americans to take the job not them. The profit margin on the restaurant business is between 5 and 7 % (10% is rare ) after you pay for all the bills specially rent, which in Seattle is around $5,000 and $15,000 a month (not downtown) depending on the neighborhood and the size or the building, so paying more is not an easy option.

They’re all hard working, loyal and most of all they’re very family oriented humbled people. Americans will never do the jobs these real contributors of America will ever do, and this is a fact I’ve learned over 30 years in the business. Now I’ve had to cut down on services that can be automated like refills and preprepped foods. Taking quality away to more convenient methods.

"Mexican workers"? More like illegal workers. Reduce the taxes and regulatory expenses associated with hiring Americans, and you'd see a reduction in the unemployment rate, especially amongst millennials, without drastically increasing the cost of services. It would also reduce the cost to taxpayers who have to pay to support all the unemployed and underemployed.

Most comments here fail to consider the reality that were the restaurant owner to a so called "living wage" he would have to raise the cost of the food. Who would pay $15-20 for a simple taco? If you increase wages you increase the cost of the end product. From there you simply apply the law of supply and demand: if costs go up, demand goes down. The US has a certain standard of living, when costs go up that standard goes down. Even if you give everyone a raise, you only inflate the cost of living. Every economy needs people who are willing to accept a lower wage or that economy needs to export out the jobs that require that lower wage. This is why Trump will never bring back low wage factory work, you wouldn't want him to anyway. Who would want to pay more for an iphone?

Liberalizing county's economy within limits to its natural resources, demography, gdp, etc. is more favorable if backed with strong safety nets. PPP as commonly practiced by others use immigrant's labor force at low cost. Heck, just look at commie ch state run enterprise winning bids globally , besides giving u a loan of course when building that infrastructure, business , and hiring their local chinese workforce (NOT AS LEGAL IMMIGRANT OR UNDOCUMENTED WORKFORCE PAYING TAXES TO U.S. BUT MORE LIKE STATE CH CONTRACTORS FOR LOW COST PRICE MAKING CH GREAT AGAIN)🤪

Marquee Mark that’s an uninformed comment. Taxes are still paid on immigrant/illegal labor! Haha that’s the fucked up part! They even have tax deductions from their paychecks which in turn at the end of the year they cannot claim any tax refunds because if they ARE illegal they more then likely are using a fake Social Security card and the government absorbs the monies they’ve paid throughout the year/years. I’m a business owner but I don’t employ illegals. I’m Mexican too. First generation born and raised in Northern Ca! My parents migrated here LEGALLY back in the 50’s when the US Government would actually grant you your US Citizenship when joining the military. You'd have to pay taxes and if it's 40 hours a week, they'd get benefits. Illegals, there's none of that. And they're virtual slaves to the boss. Kind of hard to not hire illegals when there's so many benefits to the company. I lived in an apartment where they hired a Mexican guy as a custodian and he managed all the illegal hires. They'd line up in the parking lot every morning and he'd come out and pick out the ones he wanted.

because more and more people are realizing that a college degree is worth its weight in gold now a days, and no one wants to work for $9/hour forever. Also this guys business seems like he hasnt given a raise to anyone since he opened.

Then why are there lots of stories of people with advanced college degrees flipping burgers?
There are plenty of degrees out there that have ZERO practical value to any employer.

Are you kidding? Why are you running such insane stories when US citizens are having trouble finding jobs? Are you trying to lose your readership? Maybe you should focus on Mexican readers as your US market share is going to hurt with this kind of terrible reporting.

I started in the u.s as a dishwasher. Altough I graduated medical school in POL. Worked later in a construction site, everything without any legal papers. I am so happy I came back home and followed my doctor career that I was destined to. In the u.s i didn;t make any good money, didn't save much. In Europe nowadays there s a big problem with lack of workers in any branch. I quess nobody from EU comes to you to work, does'n t pay off. The american dream turned out to be an american nightmare. Personally I lost 4 years of my life there.
