Instead of spending the $33 billion into flood mitigation of Jakarta, they did this how stupid. With the amount of money they could've turned Jakarta into the next Amsterdam and continue to inhabit there for hundreds more years.

Without population controls, it will suffer the same fate as Jakarta. Overpopulation with massive unemployment.and crime along with environmental disasters.

Statistically, it does makes sense, but in practice this promote more inequality to the already diverse ethnic groups and their separated regions, especially the eastern side of Indonesia that still underdeveloped from all sectors. Not to mentions, the rice farming culture of the Javanese that lead to unsustainable food policies that replaced the original diets of the eastern Indonesia region that increased a demand for rice more than it should be, while local farmer break their bone in the the rice field without ever gain more income or even cheaper fertilizers. Instead of addressing the root problem, the government tend to choose short term fix by importing rice from Vietnam and others. Also, I lived in West Java which are the most populated province of Indonesia, but when we travel to Southern West Java, it's still underdeveloped since the Soeharto's regime compared to the northern Java, perhaps it's neglected due to mountainous terrains even though it had fertile soils for tea, coffee, rice, and vegetable farming.

It's disappointing to see the Wall Street Journal's video on Nusantara presenting outdated footage and misleading information. Contrary to the claim that Nusantara threatens the rainforest, it is being built in an industrial forest area, which already poses a risk to the rainforest regardless of the new capital's construction. The development of Nusantara includes significant efforts toward sustainability and environmental protection. Accurate reporting is crucial for an informed discussion on this important project. Also the claim that Nusantara is being built "in the middle of nowhere" is inaccurate. Nusantara is strategically located near Balikpapan and Samarinda, both well-connected by toll roads, with plans to link these to Nusantara. These cities will support the new capital. While it's true that local communities face displacement issues, this is a recurring problem due to government incompetence. Instead of halting the project, we should focus on finding solutions to support local communities. Discussions on forums like Skyscrapercity offer more updated and credible information compared to major media outlets like the Wall Street Journal.

The main reason behind moving Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Nusantara is never because of Jakarta's sinking problem. While it's true that it's one of the reason, but it's not the key reason. The key reason is because economic development since our independence has always been only concentrated on Java island. So the moving of capital city will symbolize the moving from a Java-centrist development towards an Indonesian-centrist development. As a native Kalimantan, I really appreciate this move as it'll also bring more and more development to our neglected massive island (3rd largest in the world, as big as the country of Turkey).

I think in the long term this new city is a good solution, having the economy of a country depend only on one metropolitan area is a risk, considering climate change can hurt Jakarta in the future

😂😂😂The capital city of the archipelago is the center of government. Meanwhile, there are dozens of administrative and economic support cities in Indonesia as well as small towns. Meanwhile, other countries have failed to move their capital because they are pursuing metropolitan and economic centers.😂
They should have modernised the other big cities in Java instead of spending gigantic budget to a new capital. Jakarta compared to other hub cities have a huge gap in many aspects.

why do people continue to build a "great city" in the middle of no where, it never works. even if you build the greatest city, but there is no population, if there is no population base how do you grow from that? like they just expect the first wave of people will just move to a empty city without any supporting infustructure, where they get job? where to get food? if they are the first wave that means there is no existing job market, no existing food market, transportation. they should find a mid size city in a great spot and improve from that or build it next to a mid size city

They don't mention that Java accounts for 50% of the population so java centric makes sense
Java centric gak masalah asalkan pembangunannya bukan dari menyedot kekayaan daerah lain utk bangun jawa. Kekayaan tambang2 mibyak, batubara, dll di sumatra dan derah lainnya hanya dinikmati jawa.

I feel that even without moving the capital, development would be fairly even. What is needed is not moving the capital but greater autonomy to local governments.

It's to move the government so it's harder for people to protest in front of the government building since half of Indonesia population is on Java. Now people will have to fly or take long journey ship to get there instead of just taking bus or train.

Jakarta beach land always getting lower from sea every year & surrounded by active mountain ring of fire, traffic road very crowded would take much time to work, lack of water ways will make flood every year
Jakarta is overpopulated and overcrowded because people from other parts of Indonesia keep flocking there to get some of the economic crumbs. Why would they bother to do that? Because the economy in their hometown (especially in the rural areas) is not prospering.
For example, the farmers in the rural areas are being neglected with lots of imported commodities that decrease the market price. Those farmers then stopped teaching their offspring how to farm and push them to work in other fields. This phenomenon forces them into urbanisation and Jakarta is the right place for that, economically.
