@@Rando1975 I have friends that loved in Hong Kong during the rise of king fu movies in the west and theyd sometimes just pick up any white person to play Americans or Brits, so youd sometimes wind up with a guy who's english skills arent any better than the Chinese film makers playing Americans. I saw a movie once where some chinese film makers hired some Spanish dudes to play Americans because they figured Chinese people wouldnr be able to tell the difference between spanish and English

Alan Oppenheimer, AKA, the voice of Skeletor in the "He-Man" cartoons was the ferociously over-acting tv panelist in this version of "Gamera", which I've not seen before.
This version worked a lot of American actors into it, but all good ones, like him and Dick O'Neill.
He's very underrated as a live action actor too.

I have a 'good' monster movie to review: Varan: The Unbelievable. Or, as I like to call it, Varan: The Unbelievably Bad American Cut, or Varan: The Unbearable.
You may already know about this one, but if you don't, it does everything this movie does in terms of Americanization, but WORSE.
It completely retools the original plot by inserting scenes featuring a cartoony trying-to-sound-cool-scientist guy and his wife, and essentially turns the movie into a borefest. And because of the cut scenes (one of which featured Varan's gliding ability), choppy editing, generic sound cues (replacing Ifukube's brilliant score for the film), and terrible acting and dialogue, I would say this movie goes from being a B-Grade monster flick to a Z-Grade schlockfest. Perfect to tear apart.

The saddest part is, the original cut was a perfectly serviceable monster movie, and remains one of my personal favorites.
Mark Juneburg Varan's arguably the most screwed over kaju among Toho's stable. Yes, he got his own film, but after that, I think the only screen time he's ever gotten is his blink and you miss him cameo in "Destroy All Monsters."

One of the best parts of the MST3K version is when there's a close-up of Kenny, and one of them imitates the music from The Omen, because he's that spooky a kid. Most people here would agree.

The parents were setting up unrealistic standards for their own parenting skills with a name like that.
To be fair, japanese parents usually have harsh expectations for their kids.

Gamera, the child "friendly" version of Godzilla, I'm surprised that anyone, let a alone a child watched this slightly underrated movie series.

The name Gamera (ガメラ) derives from the Japanese word kame (カメ) meaning turtle. Notice how the two spellings are nearly identical, the カ becomes ガ when it has the dakuten placed on it having to do with rendaku, in other words the dakuten makes an unvoiced constant a voiced constant.

"OH SHIT!" is what I was thinking when the milestone was hit but in a good way. Binge watched all Gamera movies with my friends, my only regret is that I was not high while watching it

Does anyone else think that Gamera's Intro is similar to how the Beast from 20'000 Fathoms was brought to life? A giant reptile frozen in the arctic was brought back to life by an atomic explosion.
Also I can explain why Gamera kills just about everyone except the kid. Most annoying kid protagonists, even some annoying adults, have a type of Plot Armor (Which i will dub the Protect Annoying Character Armor or PACA for short) that can mentally influence those superior to them to be more pleasant towards them then they should deserve.
Annoying child characters or Kennys as you call them, have this type of armor more often then annoying adults. That's why a Kenny can be part of something that they have no business being in, and why they hardly if ever suffer the consequences of their actions such as trying to derail a plan to stop a killer monster that murders millions.
However some entities are immune to this mind control, but the PACA also has the basic Plot Armor effect that may cause events to shift in a Kenny's favor regardless of immunity.
And that is my scientific thesis, hope you enjoy the ramblings of some dude trying to make sense on how these annoying characters get almost zero retribution for their actions.

Have you seen the Godzilla vs Gamera Death Battle? It's pretty cool. Also, it's not a movie, but have you ever heard of Zone Fighter? It was Toho's answer to Ultraman, and had the advantage of having a few Godzilla monsters in it, including Godzilla himself. Its as silly as you'd expect from a series like that, although most people will tell you that Ultraman, Super Sentai, and even Power Rangers are better. Also, Zone Fighter's never been dubbed, and I've heard it's really hard to find.

So, wait. Gamera came out in 65, three years after the Godzilla movies had been being made in color, and 9 years after Toho movies in general were being made in color, and it's STILL in black and white? Was Daiei poor?

Thanks for reviewing this. Like the original Godzilla, I never saw this (w/o MST3K "enhancements") until I was an adult. It didn't play alot when I was a kid. The other '60s/early '70s Gamera movies played alot on regular tv.

Many fond memories of renting all the Sandy Frank versions of Gamera on VHS tapes at my local Doorstep video when I was a kid.
One of the guys on that talk show is acclaimed voice actor Alan Oppenheimer (Warpath, Seaspray, Skeletor) and one of the guys in that US board meeting is Steve Zacharias (director of Revenge of the Nerds)

Blunova I'll be honest, but I adore "Gamera the Brave" and while not the best of the Gamera films, it's my personal favorite, despite its flaws (cute monster eyes / needed more battles).

I remember watching Gamera for the first time while I was in Chicago. It was at G-fest and a bunch of guys were riffing on it in the movie room. They let me join them and we sat their watching some Gamera riffing on it for what seemed like forever. I believed we also made fat jokes about Kenny like the MST3K crew did. Either way, great review, brought back those memories for me, and also convinced me to buy all the Gamera movies. I look forward to your next reviews.

Los Angeles, California, 1978-1989, channel 5, ktla, would play Godzilla marathons from 7AM - 7PM on 2 hoildays a year.
Maybe Gamera feels that children are innocent and pure, as opposed to adults who cause most of the problems in the world. Kaiju are pretty smart (most of the time), so it's not so far fetched to think Gamera could make that observation. Still, unless he has telepathic powers we've never been made aware of, I don't see how he could have made any observations on human kind having only been free from the ice for a couple of days. So yeah, this comment does nothing to explain why Gamera saves Kenny. Brandon's pedophilia theory is looking a lot more likely now.

MasterSeijin The heisei Gamera is geard towards older audiences. As well as the Godzilla films. The only kid friendly ones were from 1969 to 1973. Although 1972 Godzilla vs gigan was for people on drugs. No joke. And in 1974 Toho decided to cut the bullshit and went for a much older audience. Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla to Terror of MechaGodzilla. Then after that they keeped it for older audences since the Heisei and Millennium Godzilla series. Well it took Gamera until the Heisei to become more for older audiences.
