Hello! Heads up for you all! Around the hour mark in the video, I say that Godzilla vs. Destoroyah was released in 1985. However, the correct release year is actually 1995. My apologies for the slip up!
Born in 1963, i grew during the monster boom. Even then Gamera movies were something of a minor league, but I loved the franchise. Even as a first grader when Gamera vs Jaigar came out in 1970, I thought it was more “realistic” just because of all the green blood that came out when he was injured. Well congratulations for the long video. I was captivated and didn’t realize it was 90 minutes long until you mentioned it at the end. Great work and God bless.
Last November we found out Gamera was making his grand return with the Rebirth anime, and after many years of telling myself that I would get around to watching his franchise, I thought there was no better time. I found out there were 12 Gamera movies, so I decided to watch one movie a month. Around April of 2023, I found this video of yours. I remember watching your History & Evolution of Godzilla video way back when it came out, so I knew I was in for a treat. However, I didn't want to spoil the movies for myself, so every time I finished a movie, I would come back here and watch a bit more of your video. It's been a pleasure watching you talk about each film over the last few months, and I can't wait to see what else you have instore.
Gamera the Brave is soooo underappreciated. I think its 'failure' is just a side effect of the time it was released, with most people getting tired of kaiju movies. I feel it's a strong closing to an era of Gamera movies. Hoping to see a new Gamera movie in my lifetime, I hope Kadokawa would see Shin Gojira and Shin Ultraman's success and do something about it. Hell, if Hideaki Anno wants to do a Gamera movie, he's very welcome to do so.
GTB? sigh... ppl like you are why we were punished with Godzilla: Zero Point. it's like it was trying to piss off adult fans and get the writers fetish out there on a scale and way not meant to be tested by man. I respect your take..but damn reality sucks but you gots to get a grip on it sometime :( ill pray for you
@@SpaceWizardCosplayMore so than just Gamera Rebirth, Kaneko said that he had approached Kadokawa with a new Gamera pitch but it had to be shelved for Rebirth. Once Rebirth is released, maybe they'll contact him again. Even if they don't, we have the recent statement of Seshita, director of Rebirth, that if Rebirth does well, he has ideas for a second season, a live action series and even up to ten movies. We gotta support Gamera Rebirth, because if it profits, Gamera may well become the powerhouse he was before
The running joke of the explosive finishes are the funniest damn jokes in this video. In all seriousness I love Gamera almost as much as Godzilla and this provided a lot of great info and nostalgia for me. Thank you for the amazing video!
Man we did it ! we got the Gamera Netflix series now and its really good imo. Im a 90s kid and grew-up watching the Heisei era Godzilla and Gamera movies. They are doing both our boys good nowadays. They even brought back the old school big bads for the show
I have been a life-long Gamera fan. Many people make fun of the Showa era films but I think they are great. Noriaki Yuasa crafted them with love and infused them with elements that capture the child's imagination. He is to be commended for this. Without his work, we would not have the great Heisei trilogy that came later. Shusuke Kaneko was just the right man to breathe new life into the franchise. I even liked Gamera the Brave and the way it returned to its child friendly roots. Too bad it didn't continue. Very nice video. Thanks!
The heisei era definitely revived the popularity for the guardian of the universe himself and I’m very happy that the heisei era of gamera had a darker tone just like the heisei era of Godzilla
This was a fucking awesome video. I was looking for a full Gamera history, and yours is the best one available out there. You nailed it, man. Great job!
This was such a splendid video to watch. As a fan of the terrific turtle who is on the younger side, there was a good amount of things about the franchise I didn’t know that were new to me in this video. Especially the history of the franchise outside the movies during the Showa era. This probably one of the best kaiju related videos I’ve seen here on TH-cam to date.
Dude, I just watched this video - it was AWESOME! Thanks so much for one of my childhood favorites history lessons and back stories! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Man idk why I put off watching this for so long. This was great, such good editing and as someone who grew up practically shilling Godzilla and not thinking much for Gamera this honestly made me appreciate Gamera a lot more. Great vid man keep it up!
Thanks! Just found this channel while searching vids of godzilla minus 1. Loved this vid, watched Gamera movies when I was a kid as well. Never saw the trilogy at the end, I have some catching up to do. Thanks again.
Gamera vs. Gyaos is my favorite of the Showa era. What's ironic is that even though it brought the kid-friendly factor back into the series, it's probably one of the scariest kaiju movies of its time. Gyaos is a great villain. His glowing eyes, creepy hiss/roar and nocturnal predation habits make him more formidable than the usual giant monster, and the green glow around the mountains really made for some great atmosphere. I still remember watching the original Gamera as a kid in the 90s with my older cousins. As a 6-8 year old, I really liked how scary yet silly the suit looked, something about saving the falling kid really spoke to me, like even though Gamera is destroying the city, he still knew he had to save that kid, meaning he's not really a monster, just misunderstood. 10/10 kaiju, still love him more than Godzilla
i like to think that the reason gamera didn't care about human lives in the 3rd Heisei movie is that since the charm or amulet was broken it severed his link to humanity that or he was desperate to get rid of the monsters that he didn't have time to care
Amazing video. Thank you for your effort, and for the amount of care and detail that you put into it. As a Gamera enthusiast, this tickles me to no end. It makes me want to pull out all my DVDs and binge watch everything (I think my SO would kill me!). [shared to my FB for friends!]
You did a fantastic job with The Evolution of Gamera!! I enjoyed watching this so much. The Heisei Gamera films are exceptional and are my favorite kaiju films after Gojira & Shin Godzilla. Kaneko is a master film maker. Thanks so much for this!
Reciently I knew Gamera this year by watching the three Heisei movies and man, they're awesome!!! Totally incredible, well done, masterpiece truly!! I still watch the three movies in my free time to relax and enjoy when there isn't a good movie.
Awesome video! As a kid, i watched some early Gamera on ‘Creature Double Feature’ and now, after this, i want to see them, plus the ones I missed! And yes, we need a Gamera vs. Godzilla!!
This was just a perfect video for Gamera, i had no idea who Gamera was until now, i always thought he was just another forgotten Kaiju like so many before, but now that i know he's basically been a rival to Godzilla with a trilogy of serious films as well as a collection of stupid goofy kids movies with a pornstar in it really made my day, thank you
Awesome video. Its great to know there's other hard core Gamera fans out there. I really hope they make a season 2 of Gamera Rebirth and that we get more Gamera content in general but I would love to see another movie made that looks as epic as the 2015 concept tease 🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏 Well done 👍
Dude, your passion and commitment shine through here, you told this story so well. I hope some of the people who worked on the films get to see this - they'll be stoked to know they inspired you so much 🙂
That's super kind of you to say! Thank you so much! Believe me when I say this was a labor of love. It would be amazing if I could get to hear from one of the filmmakers. Only time will tell!
Great work in the making of this video! I can only recall seeing Gamera vs. Guiron, several times, as a kid and loved it. I had no idea so many other Gamera movies were made until I stumbled upon them on Amazon Prime. I haven't watched any yet, due to the fact they are undubbed. I just may have been inspired to watch them regardless, because of this video. At least I know what order to watch them in now. Keep up the good work!
Excellent job. I am a 57 year old Japanese American who's been in California since 1971 so my childhood memory of Gamera are the same as any kid in CA at that time(I think they usually played on Channel 11 or Channel 9 on was called KTTV). I must say the new dubbing of the new Gamera is way better than when I was a kid. Back then, the dubbing made the people sound like morons and they all spoke with a fake Japanese accent. We were all unknowingly racist at the time but today the translation is very good, no goofy accent or weird dialog. I think it's thanks to Anime and Manga because it turned on a young crowd to Japanese culture. Think about it, no modern kid would think its OK to put a dump Japanese accent on a Dragonball Z episode. As far as your presentation, I found it spot on. I loved all the wacky monsters and found them cool. The knifehead with shyurikens mat seem stupid modern kids was "Wow Bitch'n!" to a 6 year old watching on a small black and white TV. Later in life I looked back at the Gamera movies with found memories but also with realization on how cheaply they were made. So watching the new Gamera, specially Gamera Vs Iris, I was delighted and Amazed at how good the new Gamera was. It is as you said, the old generation remaking their beloved Kaiju into what they think would make it even better.
Really solid rundown of a character that is often sidelined by the king. Nice to see Gamera get some spotlight. I do think your VO would be stronger if you didn't so often resort to artificially trying to add weight to a statement by saying the last two words of the sentence....really...slowly. Save it for really big transitions or reveals, maybe two in a script at most.
Thank you! That's been a big issue of mine lately and something I really need to work on. So I appreciate the reminder going into another video so I can catch myself doing it before it happens to often. Lol.
I love how chaotic the past of both of these film series are, if it isnt Godzilla suits literally being stolen all he time its Gamera set actors throwing a riot and trashing all the props
You did a fantastic job, listened to the whole thing while I prepared and cooked supper. I love listening to lore and history videos and you certainly delivered a lot of interesting details on all aspects to the movies creation.
For people don't know is the part where Gyaos almost sliced off GAMERAS arm was foreshadowing in the future and every time Gamera loses his arm it's always the right arm
@@Kaiju-bm4ts he only lost his right arm 3 times in the gamera franchise Gamera versus gyaos the first original one not completely losing his arm but nerely slicing it off the second time is when he lost his arm with Iris and the third time is in the rebirth series
@@benjaminwalters2188 He never lost his arm in the showa era so that doesn't count if he "nearly" lost it. Even then gamera losing his arm in g3 wasn't meant to be a recall back anyway. Him losing his arm in rebirth is however a callback to g3
Very excited to see the video. Love the content, also I notice a typo (I think) in the description when it says "The monster that went Head-to-head with Gamera. I think it should say Godzilla but not sure.
Ok I just found this last night and watched it today. This was absolutely amazing and sincerely a labor of love. I am 58 and I discovered Gamera when I was 8 years old. You do the math. There was this local station that would play a genre of movies over the course of a week at 4pm. So that week it was obviously Japanese Horror/Monster movies. My 8 year old self was glued to the TV every day that week as I fell in love with Gamera and eventually Godzilla plus one movie called Attack of The Mushroom People I found rather disturbing for a 8 year old... and i loved it . But I am here to say Gamera was my first love, then Godzilla. They lit my little imagination on FIRE and I started my life as an Artist just drawing what I loved. So watching this today made me realize my love for imagination came from these movies. Star Wars made me want to draw people and use my imagination as well. Saw Godzilla minus One earlier this month in IMAX and was actually terrified for the first time watching a Kaiju movie. Would love to see another Gamera movie as well. Thank you again for creating this.
This comment absolutely warms my heart. This video was absolutely a labor of love and I thank you so much for watching and sharing that fantastic story. It's comments like these that keep me going and you have no idea how much I appreciate seeing them. ♥️
I was born in 1967 and I grew up with Gamera. Excellent job you've done here. I hope and pray before I die, that Gamera faces Godzilla in an epic Monster Film.
Excellent job CJ! As a big Gamera fan myself, I loved this fond and fun look back at one of my all time favorite kaijus (I have a bunch of toys and figures to prove it!)! The Gamera 1995 - 1999 Trilogy still remains my 3 favorite kaiju films ever!
This is a fantastic video. Love the Gamera movies, but I didn't know a lot about the making of them. The Daimajin movies are also great, so I knew Daiei wasn't just a "ripoff" company, but I'm surprised to see they were such a big studio at the start.
The Garasharp concept wasn't until the 90's as a special feature for a laserdisc release, Wyvern was supposed to be the villain for the film after Zigra
This is such a great video THANK YOU! ok thanks this is why i love GAMERA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe even more than godzilla im crying right now THANKS!

Not really....as he lost his first fight with legion and didn't lose his arm or had it damaged. Wasn't really foreshadowing
This video's timing is perfect since Gamera's about to come out of hibernation thanks to Rebirth.
I wonder how many people who played the Shining Force 2 game on Sega Genesis notice the Gamera nod in the optional playable character Kiwi.
Another banger of a video, it's made me want to watch these movies now
Thank you so much! If anything, I always recommend people check out the House trilogy. Some absolutely great stuff there.
Very excited to see the video. Love the content, also I notice a typo (I think) in the description when it says "The monster that went Head-to-head with Gamera. I think it should say Godzilla but not sure.
Much love, man! And yes! Thanks for catching that! Guess I'm getting a little caught up in all this Gamera stuff. Lol.
@@JustinSVA I just found your Godzilla Evolution video! Sooooo...😁👍😁
Absolutely fantastic work, mate! You got yourself a new subscriber!
Thank you so much! ♥️
Gamera was always my favorite when watching Creature Double Feature as a kid. A flying turtle is still an awesome idea today.
This made me remember that netflix gamera film and now imma watch that tonight to see how it is. This makes me love gamera.
This is an awesome and epic essay on Gamera!
I was born in 1967 and I grew up with Gamera. Excellent job you've done here. I hope and pray before I die, that Gamera faces Godzilla in an epic Monster Film.
Thank you so much! I'm sure we will! Only a matter of time!
Thank you!
The Netflix anime Gamera Rebirth was great too. Sadly, the G Man animes weren't. Great video man!
Yeah I was looking for a comment about this
Great video!
Thanks!
This is such a great video THANK YOU! ok thanks this is why i love GAMERA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe even more than godzilla im crying right now THANKS!
The fact that I got tears out of anybody is a massive compliment. Thank you so much for watching!
@@JustinSVA yes I am very happy I did thanks. I made this a playlist on my channel to promote it because it was so good!
@@barrage933 Thank you for doing that! Any little bit helps so it means a ton!
Thank you very much. I'll be watching them all now
Don't know why it was just only recommended to me. It was more than an hour yet didn't bore or disappoint. Awesome work.

Amazing video. Ive always been a huge Gamera fan. Its great to see you making vid of him. Thank u❤
Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it!
*Gamera : The ORIGINAL Mutant Turtle You are absolutely correct about these movies @**25:02** HIT THE FLOOR @**25:25** Thank you for this presentation*
I'd definitely would be excited too see Gamera introduced into the Monsterverse , with Godzilla & Kong
That would be so good! Definitely the most likely way we'd see them together too.
Gamera isn't as popular in the west for something like that to happen
@@NoneofwhatHollywood is usually the gate way to popularity
Just Amazing work.. Thank you..
Thanx Justin I'm a Subscriber because you do a GREAT job- Please keep them coming!!!!!!
Absolutely will do! Thank you very much!
This was a high quality doc! I didn't know anything about Gamera The Brave, thanks!!
An entire hour and a half video talking about my good ol friend.
Thank you for sharing a clip from the Texarkana Dub. That Gag Dub is hilarious. "Holy cryaa-aap!' lives rent free in my head forever!
This is a hellva review! Nice job!
I watched this video till the end. Good job my man!
I'm hoping they make a new Gamera movie sometime soon. That Gamera Unknown trailer was sick.
♥️
Fantastic and I learned a lot I wasn't aware of.
🙏🙏🙏
I don't know why I subbed to you before, but this came up as a recommend. Gamera is my favorite monster, but I was only given Godzilla as a child.
