- 🇧🇷 When I began learning Brazilian Portuguese in 2001, I didn't just want to get fluent in the language. I wanted to BECOME BRAZILIAN! From drinking all night with samba friends in Rio de Janeiro's favelas, to learning to play bossa nova music, to parting with some of Brazil's most famous pop stars, my Brazilian adventure was definitely one of the most thrilling periods of my life.
In this video, I share the three key things I did to get fluent in Brazilian Portuguese (my third foreign language after French and Spanish), and the lessons you can apply in your own language learning adventures.

Olly I am learning Portuguese and have one of your books. I have a few friends that are Portuguese and several friends who speak Spanish. They all want me to learn both. What are your thoughts on learning both languages at the same time?
That flight to brazil really test my portugues that 8hr flight from miami to brazil was no joke but i had great experience

I'm also learning Brazilian Portuguese and the only interaction I get with native Brazilians is within a few language learning apps, but I've got an impression that the Brazilians are extremely generous and kind whenever I need help. If I ask a question, so many Brazilians would come to help me. They are also generous in compliments. I don't know if I am the only one getting this kind of impression, but their positive energy is really encouraging.

I've had the same experience...I've studied several different languages and I have to say that Brazilians have been hands down the most generous in helping you learn their language. Part of it I think it has to do with the fact that they really don't expect foreigners to learn Portuguese, but I think it's also a cultural element of wanting to help foreigners feel at home.
Never met too many Brazilians but I live in Portugal, same thing here, always go the extra mile to help. Must be something in the language!

it is! i don’t know why but i really like how natural he sounds to me, it’s quite weird but very welcome. he even pronounces the R’s the right way, and although i find it quite charming when foreigners speak with their accents, it’s always amazing to listen to one speaking so good!
Portuguese is my first foreign language that i learned. I went to Brazil back in 2011 until 2013. I've been back there a few times and my wife is from there. I would definitely consider my Portuguese as very high level. I'm most proud of how well i got the accent down, enough to sometimes be confused for Brazilian.
I'm learning Egyptian Arabic now, and it's proving to be a challenge, but I'm determined to get my Arabic to a high level as well
Why not learn Spanish or Italian or French? 🤔 I'm a fluent Spanish speaker, and it's helping me learn Portuguese. Many of the words are the same or similar enough. Of course, there are false friends too.

I went to Rio for the Olympics and it was amazing. I was out in the boonies on the Guaratiba peninsula, but I loved the Friday night bingo, samba school parties and clubinho. Amazing. I can’t wait to get back.

such an important point! don't just learn a language, immerge yourself in the culture and way of living! I'm German and I wanted to perfect my English, moreover, I wanted to become truly American! I did a study abroad in Chicago and I can say that, after this experience, I now have a different approach to speaking English! now, I try to do the same with Portuguese, as I'm so in love with Brazil and their culture! :-)

Interesting your comment on the expansive and sociable characteristic of Brazilians. That’s impressive. Been speaking Brazilian Portuguese for my entire life and I still suck at it.
You should see me and a couple of Filipinos who have lived in the Philippines for most of their life and still can't pick up Filipino. There are a few people in every population in the country who got way more western influence in their lives and speak fluent English and not Filipino without having ever step out of the Philippines. 😅

I gasped while watching this video because this is exactly how I learned Portuguese as well! I live in Canada and I made so many Brazilian friends throughout high school. I'd been exposed to Portuguese whenever I hung out with my friend group. I began to listen to bossa nova and Brazilian funk all the time and practiced them on my ukulele while learning how to sing. After about one year, I could understand 70% of my friends' conversations. I didn't realize at first what I was doing, but I've been continuously "being used to" the language, which therefore made me "learn" the language. My speaking skills are not as good however now I'm making an effort to talk more and actually study the language. Thank you for the video, I hope someday I will be fluent in Portuguese as you are.
I learned Portuguese by translating into it a book that I had written. Then I wanted to test how much I had learned by going to Portugal for two weeks. It was amazing. One or two of the Portuguese I met speculated that I was from Spain, because I am fluent in Spanish and that must have given me something of an accent. But if you have written a book, it probably has a good share of the words and phrases that roll around in your head, and would feel comfortable talking about. So I really recommend that method to learn a new language.
A couple of years later I was asked to preside at a wedding, where the groom was from Brazil and his parents did not speak English. I was terrified that all of my preparation had been in European Portuguese. So I prepared hard for the readings and prayers, but I also bought a xylophone and taught myself how to play The Girl from Ipanema. When the parents arrived I decided what they really needed was hospitality rather than just a church performance, and I just started talking with them. They did so much for me, as much as I might have done for them.

As a Brit, I also feel much happier overseas. I’m also learning Brazilian Portuguese. It’s my 3rd language. My 1st is English, 2nd is Greek and 3rd is Portuguese.
As a Brazilian, I'm really impressed at his level of portuguese. His accent and pronunciation are PERFECT, he sounds like he's been speaking it his whole life
Love how recognizable Garota de Ipanema is. LOVE Brazilian music. I fell into a Ludmilla-Anita wormhole on my trip. And now, every time I watch a Netflix show, I discover a new fave. 3% introduced me to Preciso Me encontrar. Such beautiful lyrics and melody.

This is an amazing video that speaks a truth that I've come to realize while living in Brazil. You're never going to feel 100% fluent, you'll always want to improve your Portuguese(or whatever language). There's times I used to need to translate every sentence while chatting with friends on What's App, but as I continue to speak more, study, watch movies, listen to music/ podcast and occasionally read the THINGS I LIKE (very important detail, you have to find things that fir in these categories you like in your target language) I get better and need less help and only need to immerse myself in content I like in Portuguese so it becomes less about learning and more about enjoying and incorporating it as an everyday experience (ex now one of my new favorite podcast is Brazilian so I listen to it a few times a week, just two Paulistas interviewing celebs but I enjoy the conversation and I'm learning )

But honestly, I kind of understand what you want to say. I think Brazil is just kind of this cultural anthropophagic monster that will demand your entirety, so maybe this sense of relieve when leaving Brazil, is just the release of the Brazilian gravitational pull, that no matter what, will try really hard to integrate you into our society.

Finding a specific interest to explore in another language is actually very useful to increase your fluency. As a Portuguese speaking, my favorite thing is to watch videos of history in English to improve my vocabulary and listening skills in the language.
Right- learning through immersion/ input is the key!! I haven't tried to learn languages very intensely at all, but always felt that the way wasn't to focus on learning grammar rules but just to get as much exposure as possible and letting the brain work out the logic by itself.
I spent some months in Brazil in my early 20ies and realized I had picked up quite a lot by just listening, without really trying to learn or trying to speak it.
Olly is already a legend for language learners. First because of his boldness, second, he has wgat is called willingness to learn.
Brazilian Portuguese is so versatile and exquisite. I can't imagine how pleasant it would be to relearn it.

I love this, Ollly! I had a similar path to language learning in the 1970's. As an American on an exchange program, my port. teacher put me onto MPB. She had suggestions for singers whose pronunciation was good for Sao Paulo (where i was living)..and even a few that were good for grammar. One example I still sing (badly, alas) is "se verdade fosse" by Paulinho Nogeira. Know it? it helped me with the subjunctive/conditional verbs.
Anyway glad you're pushing the place of music in language learning and i know you'll help other Brits and Americans learn to appreciate Brasil and its amazing culture. I wish had taken it as far as you have! Thanks again....and well done!

Interesting observations! In fact, I had the same type of realization, after studying Japanese for 3 years (unfortunately in a wrong manner so nothing stuck with me in the end :D) ang going to Japan to work for a couple of months, I realized it was all a big fantasy and as much as I appreciated the experience I no longer wanted it: the language, the culture, the lifestyle. And I said to myself: it's okay to let go. On the other hand, this failure (in language learning) made me really want to succeed in another language, an easy one preferably. And so I chose Spanish. I absolutely hated it for a long time, but after realizing I can understand more than I thought I could, I started really enjoying it. Now I honestly cannot spend a day without doing something connected with Spanish, and I am preparing for DELE B2 and the entire process took me 14 months :) So, I guess the conclusion is: changes are good, necessary haha
Oh man, I am in a similar situation, I am currently learning Japanese, it's been a year, but I hardly have progressed, the thing is, I absolutely love the language, but I don't know if I will go far just by liking it, well, It's cristal clear that Japanese is not an easy go to, but even so, I don't wanna quit that easily.

I loved what you said about not wanting to “be Brazilian.” In my language journey I often wanted to “be” (insert language), but when I went deep, I realized that just being fluent and even having an ancestral connection didn’t mean that I could “be” that ethnicity.

Thanks for this vid. I have started learning Portuguese with reading your book (yellow one). I like it a lot. I fully agree with you, when u mention that its harder when we get older. I myself have a family and lots of work, and still try to manage to learn/maintain bunch of foreign languages. It is hard for real. My native is Russian, i also speak Estonian, English, Swedish and Turkish. Now also adding Portuguese. It is a huge challenge to keep old ones on high level while learning new one. So i said to me Portuguese will be the last one :)
As language lovers, we always say the next language we learn will be the last! :)

Hello friend! I have a nice story to tell about learning a foreign language.
I learned Italian without having that purpose in mind. It happens that I was a member of the symphony choir in my home city in Venezuela. And as one all my professors was an opera singer, we were regularly singing opera choruses in Italian. But I was found out to have kind of a good tenor voice and I decided to give it a try to become an opera singer. That took me, under the influence of my teacher, to listen to full operas on records which I bought from time to time and listened to interminably for about 6 years. Not only that but also we performed several operas in town and I had to learn not only my part but also to take part in the rehearsals with all of the singers that made up the cast in those operas. I never intended to learn to speak Italian but, in the time span of six years, I travelled to Italy to pursue my singing dream and there I discovered that I had learned to speak Italian. I found this out after a single week living there where I wouldn’t risk to speak very much. But much to my great surprise, on the 8th day of my sojourn in Italy, I was speaking fluent Italian, surpassing even Spanish-speaking friends who had been living there for over 4 years. That was simply amazing.
Now I am learning Portuguese but unfortunately there are no operas in this language and popular music doesn't help me that much to reach my goal for I also grew to love classical music while I was a choir member.
It was Italian in my case but it could also have been French, Russian or even German, languages in which great operas were composed.
The other method you mentioned namely Language Exchange is another way of learning a foreign language faster.

Love this video!! I'm born and raised in the USA, but I didn't learn English until I was 6. Before that I only spoke Spanish and Catalán, because of my dad and both sets of grandparents. Later, I learned Dutch, French, German, and Portuguese, and Portuguese is my favorite of them all. However, I learned the European version, since I first studied it when I spent my semester at LA Sorbonne in Paris and then spent the following summer in Lisbon with a Portuguese family that didn't speak anything but Portuguese and they didn't have cable TV, so all the channels were local from Portugal.
When I was learning European Portuguese I used music a lot! Brazilian too!

Hi oli, I've been struggling to learn brazilian portuguese for coming up to 3 years now, I listen to brazilian music everyday, I watch videos very regularly, I tryed duolingo but all I learned there was lots of words but not how to have conversation, I often use words on a day to day basis mostly opa lol, I take weekly classes but it's still such a struggle. I've just purchased your book "short stories in brazilian portuguese " any other ideas that I can get from watching will help. Moito Obrigado

real interesting how it went form a fantasy to somewhere you didn't want to live because of cultural fit
One curious things that you mentioned was about the word "saudade". Brazilians in general wrongly think that this word has no direct translation to any other language but it definitely has (longing, for English for instance), but a better representation of that concept is probably "cafuné", which comes from old dialects of African languages back in the colonial times. It means "to caress one in docile manner over one's head". I really have no idea about any equivalent word in any other tongue and it is quite a Brazilian flavour of the language, even Portuguese people lack the concept of "cafuné".
longing is a very beautiful word in and of itself but it doesn't mean the same thing as saudade. longing is a yearning type of desire. it's when you desire something (usually something unatainable) so much that it hurts. longing is the feeling you get when you look at a crush who doesn't love you back. saudade is the sorrowful feeling caused by the absence of something you love. two very distinct words. in some cases, when you are longing for something in your past, something that you lost, it does take on the same meaning as saudade. mas eu não sinto saudade dos lábios de uma mulher que eu nunca beijei. i do long for them, however.

Ho avuto un' esperienza simile alla tua, anche io ho vissuto a Rio per un po', innamorato della cultura e della lingua ma ciò che hai detto mi ha fatto riconsiderare il mio tempo in Brasile , non ci avevo mai pensato in questi termini, mi hai offerto una riflessione molto importante che mi ha fatto rivalutare i miei ricordi, che forse solo ora, grazie a te, capisco veramente.

Ho sempre avuto una grande passione per la lingua portoghese in generale, poi ovviamente essendo l'italiano la mia lingua madre non è stato troppo difficile imparare

I have found some videos of stories in BSL which I guess would be a good starting point. Would you have any further advice on how to proceed?
