The explanation to way we use "feira": "Feira” vem de feria, que, em latim, significa “dia de descanso”. The coolest thing is that "você" is the fifth degree grandson of other words. In fact, it all started elegantly with "Vossa Mercê", which means the same as "Your Grace" in English. Then, it got really lazy and people started saying "Voss`Merce"... which evolved into "vosmecê" and finally to "vo`cê". But in everyday life, we shorten it even further and just say "Cê" (note: this is just spoken. Never use "cê" in a formal text).

It's because in our language, consonants at the end of words aren't common, so we tend to put a vowel there, usually and i or e. This is also seen when a lusophone starts to learn another language, the accent becomes perceptible.

Em relação aos dias da semana: o "feira" no final é uma derivação de "feria" (descanso em Latim). No começo era usado apenas na Semana Santa, antes da Páscoa, pois todos os dias eram dias de descanso, mas com o tempo os portugueses adotaram isso para todos os dias do ano. Quanto a semana começar com "segunda": para nós a semana começa no domingo, "monday" é segunda porque a semana começa em "sunday". Ainda falando sobre os dias, domingo também é uma derivação do latim "Dies Domenicus" (Dia do Senhor) e sábado do hebraico "shabbat", dia de descanso. I’m not especially used to hearing the differences between dialects and have just gotten used to essentially speaking a mixture of Port and Brasil Portuguese

Brazil has the biggest population of portuguese speakers, it only makes sense it's the one "version" most people talk about. There's 10+ countries that speak portuguese, and none of them is special, it's just a statistics thing.

Fun facts about Brazilian Portuguese/Brazil: there are several words that have harmless meanings in European Portuguese(EP) but have some sexual connotations in Brazilian Portuguese(BP). Some examples are: Puto (in EP it means a group of kids and in BP it can mean a male whore or a state of rage ) and Punheta (in EP it means a fish dish and in BP it means "to jerk off"). The word "gringo" is used as a general word to refer to foreigners in Brazil and has no pejorative connotations. We use the N-word (nego for men and nega for women) as an endearing term between family members. My mom calls me "nego" all the time. You shouldn't call a random person on the street "nego" though, it might be considered offensive. Between (male) friends, it's common to use the augmentative version of the word (negão) to refer to one another. The diminutive version of the word (neguinho) on the other hand, has almost always a pejorative connotation. In some regions (mostly Rio de Janeiro) the F-word (bundle of sticks) is used as a synonymous for "dude" or as a way of ending a phrase. You should avoid to call a woman "querida/queridinha" (dear/ it's diminutive form). It can sound condescending or sarcastic. According to a report from the British council, only 5% of Brazilians can communicate in English. So if you're planning on coming to visit us, you better learn Brazilian Portuguese or else you will have a hard time here. On the topic of coming to visit us, please stay away from the favelas(and the big cities too). Yes, there's a lot of good people living in favelas, but there are many bad people who use favelas as their hiding spots/base of operations and there is this misconception that foreigners are rich, so your chances of being robbed or worse are higher in favelas. Crime rates are also higher in the big cities (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, etc.). So it's best if you stay away from them if at all possible. O brasileiro e o português falam o português de uma maneira bem diferente. O português não usa gerúndio por exemplo. Eu me refiro ao português de Portugal como português europeu. Seria estranho encurtar pra "ele fala europeu" porque a Europa não é composta de um só país, então aqui se fala uma caralhada de línguas. Mas me parece bem plausível e encurtar "português brasileiro" pra "brasileiro". O Brasil é um só e fala só uma língua.

There are two more points: 1) Although there are people who say "Brazilian" in a derogatory way, others do it because they are too lazy to use the right definition. I disagree with that, but when I correct them, they fail to see why that is offensive as they don't feel it should be insulting, but rather a shorter version for "Brazilian Portuguese". 2) A few people, including some Brazilians, actually think Brazilian Portuguese should be a different language altogether. They explain that it would be easier for Brazilian students to learn their language as it would be closer to how they talk in everyday conversations. Those who advocate the "Brazilian language" argue that the current linguistic syllabus in schools is too based on Portugal's grammar patterns. Making formal writing closer to the common Brazilian would thus strengthen national identity. Anyway, this group is a minority and the general consensus, both in Portugal and Brazil, is that Brazilians speak Portuguese. @@Avalanchee3 I believe that phonetic-wise and grammar-wise Spanish is way easier. And also it does not sound like different languages depending on the continent, whereas Portuguese is in fact quite different in Europe and America (no idea of African Portuguese, they're not that influental, apart from the Cape's singers), because Brazilians adopted Spanish "melodic" (i.e. monosyllabic) prosody.
Brazilian Portuguese is my favorite, it's curious how the Brazilian version of the language is so far from the others. It seems like another language 😆, a very curious phenomenon, I don't see it in English or other languages. I know there are changes in the English language, but nothing that compromises understanding, unlike Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese.

It come from ferial which, in the catholuc church is used to refer to a day where no feast is celebrated. Sunday is the first day of the week so, Domingo, 2ª feira, 3ª feira and so on. The legend says the apostle Saint James, who evengelised the the iberian peninsula, and is said to be the first bishop of Braga snd buried in Santiago de Compostela thought that we should reference pagan gods in the days of the week. Domingo reference God (Dies Domine/Day of the Lord) and Sábado came from the Shabat. The other referece by order, Luno, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, in Galician Lues, Martes, Mércoles, Xoves, Venres.
Brazillian Portuguese is a more free language (informal), and what you see in the dictionary or in any other guides isn't taken as seriously when communicating with other people. While in Portugal Portuguese is a lot more closed down, and they are a lot more formal with how they talk, at least compared to PT-BR. Unfortunately, a lot of Portuguese people hate Brazillians, but still like Brazillian culture, while Brazilians don't care at all about Portuguese people and/or their culture. It's quite sad because we could both benefit from each other if we were friendlier.

"Feira” vem de feria, que, em latim, significa “dia de descanso”. O termo passou a ser empregado no ano 563, após um concílio da Igreja Católica na cidade portuguesa de Braga - daí a explicação para a presença do termo somente na língua portuguesa. Na ocasião, o bispo Martinho de Braga decidiu que os nomes dos dias da semana usados até então, em homenagem a deuses pagãos, deveriam mudar. Mas espera aí: se feria é dia de descanso, por que se usa “feira” apenas nos dias úteis?
Isso acontece porque, no início, a ordem do bispo valia apenas para os dias da Semana Santa (aquela que antecede o domingo de Páscoa), em que todo bom cristão deveria descansar. Depois acabou sendo adotada para o ano inteiro, mas só pelos portugueses - no espanhol, no francês e no italiano, os deuses continuam batendo ponto dia após dia. The coolest thing is that "você" is the fifth degree grandson of other words.
In fact, it all started elegantly with "Vossa Mercê", which means the same as "Your Grace" in English. Then, it got really lazy and people started saying "Voss`Merce"... which evolved into "vosmecê" and finally to "vo`cê". But in everyday life, we shorten it even further and just say "Cê" (note: this is just spoken. Never use "cê" in a formal text).
In northeast we barely say 'cê' it's more common using 'tu' at least here in Recife

It's because in our language, consonants at the end of words aren't common, so we tend to put a vowel there, usually and i or e.
This is also seen when a lusophone starts to learn another language, the accent becomes perceptible.

Em relação aos dias da semana: o "feira" no final é uma derivação de "feria" (descanso em Latim). No começo era usado apenas na Semana Santa, antes da Páscoa, pois todos os dias eram dias de descanso, mas com o tempo os portugueses adotaram isso para todos os dias do ano.
Quanto a semana começar com "segunda": para nós a semana começa no domingo, "monday" é segunda porque a semana começa em "sunday".
Ainda falando sobre os dias, domingo também é uma derivação do latim "Dies Domenicus" (Dia do Senhor) e sábado do hebraico "shabbat", dia de descanso.

Sou russa e estudou Português na universidade estatal linguística de Moscova (gigachad universidade de linguística na rússia, FYI) 😊 Não fiquei feliz quando me deram o português mas acabei gostando dele por ser incomum. Adoro o conjugativo e estranhos palavras como 'fazê-lo-ás'. Atualmente estudo espanhol em outra universidade em meu programa de mestrado e parece muito estranho ver as mesmas palavras escritas de outra forma como se fossem realmente modificadas com IA.

As someone who is very much a beginner / low intermediate speaker of Portuguese, I’m glad to finally discover why I have a habit of pronouncing my S’s as SH when I speak the language. I’m not especially used to hearing the differences between dialects and have just gotten used to essentially speaking a mixture of Port and Brasil Portuguese

Lembro de uma vez q estava indo p west coast da Florida, e paramos numa loja de conveniência na estrada. Brazil has the biggest population of portuguese speakers, it only makes sense it's the one "version" most people talk about. There's 10+ countries that speak portuguese, and none of them is special, it's just a statistics thing.
portuguese language was born in portugal, and in 1500 Pedro Alvares de Cabral arrived at brazil, when it only had indigenous tribes, and transformed it in what it is today. same thing with all the other countrys that speak portuguese, all of them speak it because portugal went there and build citys, not many people know this, but you can search it on google if you want, portugal in some point in time, was the biggest empire in the world, we conquered many lands at the time, but we failed in mantaining it.

On the topic of coming to visit us, please stay away from the favelas(and the big cities too). Yes, there's a lot of good people living in favelas, but there are many bad people who use favelas as their hiding spots/base of operations and there is this misconception that foreigners are rich, so your chances of being robbed or worse are higher in favelas. Crime rates are also higher in the big cities (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, etc.). So it's best if you stay away from them if at all possible. Brazil's countryside has wonderful places that you can visit with little risk of being robbed.

There are two more points:
1) Although there are people who say "Brazilian" in a derogatory way, others do it because they are too lazy to use the right definition.
I disagree with that, but when I correct them, they fail to see why that is offensive as they don't feel it should be insulting, but rather a shorter version for "Brazilian Portuguese".
2) A few people, including some Brazilians, actually think Brazilian Portuguese should be a different language altogether. They explain that it would be easier for Brazilian students to learn their language as it would be closer to how they talk in everyday conversations. Those who advocate the "Brazilian language" argue that the current linguistic syllabus in schools is too based on Portugal's grammar patterns.
Making formal writing closer to the common Brazilian would thus strengthen national identity.
Anyway, this group is a minority and the general consensus, both in Portugal and Brazil, is that Brazilians speak Portuguese. In spite of all the antagonism and inflated egos, videos like this should bring us together.
I think it shouldn't matter that some people disagree with calling Brazil's language "Portuguese", whatever their reason is. That only concerns them.
I, for myself, am far more interested in enjoying the Portuguese tongue, cultivating cultural harmony and have a great time with language content.

And also it does not sound like different languages depending on the continent, whereas Portuguese is in fact quite different in Europe and America (no idea of African Portuguese, they're not that influental, apart from the Cape's singers), because Brazilians adopted Spanish "melodic" (i.e. monosyllabic) prosody.
Brazilian Portuguese is my favorite, it's curious how the Brazilian version of the language is so far from the others. It seems like another language 😆, a very curious phenomenon, I don't see it in English or other languages. I know there are changes in the English language, but nothing that compromises understanding, unlike Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese.

Funny fact: Portugal change it that much after Brazilian independence. That's the reason the other colonies (independence in XX century only) follow the Metropolitan version.

The legend says the apostle Saint James, who evengelised the the iberian peninsula, and is said to be the first bishop of Braga snd buried in Santiago de Compostela thought that we should reference pagan gods in the days of the week. Domingo reference God (Dies Domine/Day of the Lord) and Sábado came from the Shabat. The other referece by order, Luno, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, in Galician Lues, Martes, Mércoles, Xoves, Venres.

Brazillian Portuguese is a more free language (informal), and what you see in the dictionary or in any other guides isn't taken as seriously when communicating with other people. While in Portugal Portuguese is a lot more closed down, and they are a lot more formal with how they talk, at least compared to PT-BR. Unfortunately, a lot of Portuguese people hate Brazillians, but still like Brazillian culture, while Brazilians don't care at all about Portuguese people and/or their culture. It's quite sad because we could both benefit from each other if we were friendlier.
