      @damnitdave. it needs to be lighter. Otherwise, it looks to be over the gvwr. There's a lot of weight up high and suspended over the rear. Either the suspension or the frame may fail next.

      @@jagtan13 Yea, on Donut's video of it, you can see the thing just twisting like crazy even going down a basic dirt road. Basically needs a full redesign, or they need to not market it as off-road capable, because most small RVs can do the same amount of "off-roading" that this thing can yet they aren't 1.2 million dollars

    Is it me or are these produced in such a wholesome way that I don't notice all the safety issues as easily. How often I've had students (even with proper PPE) with safety glasses still get splinters in their eyes. Everyone that works around welding has to wear dark out shields of some sort. Even with all that happening, everything looks great, and professional. Seems Juxtaposed, but it works.

      I don't even cut my grass without eye protection because a lawnmower threw a stone a bust my lip and ever since Idc if I look like a doofus and I keep my mouth shut cuz if it had of hit my tooth I'd definitely have lost it.

      @@GrandDawggy Totally agree. I'm sure I sound like a broken record constantly complaining about examples. preparation and PPE, It's not manly to avoid proper equipment. It's outright stubborn ignorance.
      I don't care how long you've been doing this. How nothing has ever happened in the past.
      You will more than likely go through life with all ones faculties in tact, but the example that is provided is the injury made today on someone you care about, simply because one is stuck to ones example of not needing PPE because:
      1. It takes to long.
      2. It's hard to see.
      3. It doesn't feel right.
      4. I've always done it that way.
      5. Nothins gonna happen.
      This all sounds oddly like the overbearing abuser that will never wear a prophylactic. This may sound a bit tangent, but there is studied correlation actions promote consequences.
      I'm hoping the next generation will be more prudent than us.
      Incidentally I wear eye protection, mouth guard, either a wide brim hat or a hard hat depending on the job. gloves and long sleeves, boots, long trousers never shorts. I know the one day I don't do it, It's going to rain. (metaphor of course) but it's way too often true.

      @@bruceleealmighty I couldn't agree more and I think your right about younger generation being better about PPE and health and safety, I did a short course in collage recently (engineering) and the younger guys there would put on eye protection and just like wear them about even when not working on anything.
      The funny thing was there was two styles of eye protection one modern type and an old school style "scientists glasses" and at first everyone was wearing the new style until I tried the goofy ones for a laugh one day and a younger guy pipes up "hey they make you look smart I want to try a pair" and after that day the goofy ones always went first lol
      I feel like it kinda taught them a lesson too but I don't know what exactly 😂

    Great repairs! Awesome to fix a driveshaft like that on the trail. That being said for anyone watching this -- if you are going to use those carbide cutoff wheels you need to have safety glasses. Those discs have been known to blow apart at high speeds and imbed themselves into flesh. You DO NOT want that stuff hitting your eyeballs. I am speaking from experience and I worked with a man that had lost vision in his left eye from a carbide cutoff wheel.

    The ability of you and the crew to design, fabricate, and construct a fully functioning driveshaft in the middle of nowhere is incredible to me. People always ask why trail recovery services are "so expensive". _This is why._ You're not paying guys to come pull you out; you're paying for their thousands of hours of training and experience, their specialty equipment, and their expertise.

      I might add, MORR often has to repair their own equipment after a tough recovery too. Those costs get added into the recovery fee.

      Plus their time, wages for each employee and fuel, a portion of the vehicle cost, maintenance, portion of the store/shop and utilities and....their lunch! Did I forget anything? It gets expensive real fast! Of course, Matt does it for FREE!

    With an on-board welder and Matt's crew, that trail repair was a cinch! The fun part was turning that massive and heavy rig around on a rather steep hill and getting it safely back home. Great job, guys!

    Just a little word of caution regarding cutting the yokes off driveshafts. Never be in front of them when you cut around, then tap them out. There are rare circumstances when the shaft has become pressurised if it has been heated. The cause is the cardboard corrosion/noise damper has become charred and given off gas. How would I know? I was cutting drive shafts up for lightweight framing for an airboat. I tapped one after ring cutting with a hacksaw. It blew out explosively, shifted the vice bench back about two inches, hit and shattered the cover on an Evinrude outboard, flew up, hit the carport roof and ended up in the backyard. If in doubt, drill a small hole with a dampened drillbit to relieve any gas pressure within. If I had stood on front and pulled on the thing, it would have cut me in half.

      Probably not as bad as you think, the top is hollow and the heavy stuff like batteries and water storage is down low, I'm sure it's scary but I bet it handles about the same as if it had a stock bed with a bit of weight in it. Wind would be bad though

      This is the second video I've seen of someone rescuing one of these types of rigs. The first one was Casey LaDelle getting one off a mountain that had part of an embankment collapse under it and was two breaths away from rolling down a very steep hill.
      I can kind of see the attraction, but these things do not seem to do well in the mountains....

    The vibration dampener would have been Ideal to wrap around the outside of the tube to mark a perfectly straight line like Tom Tom suggested. But Matt's Eye-Crometer did it well.

    Man, nice trail repair on that rig!
    Gotta say though, those glorified RV style "overland" rigs seem overbuilt in all the wrong ways. Super top heavy so they're tippy and can't do much suspension travel as a result. The Batmobile paint job has to make it an absolute oven in the California sun too.

      They always are lol. People who feel like they need to bring their entire home into the outdoors don't really belong in the outdoors. A decent well equipped truck with a sub 1k pound four wheel pop up camper will go far more places than that F550 ever will.

      @@dedalliance1 I live where people vacation, and I'm always amazed at the semi truck sized camping rigs that go by... Just the largest 5th wheel campers imaginable with 4 slides, washer and dryer, satellite TV, dual air conditioners, it's crazy. That's larger than a NYC apartment building.
      That's not camping... You are staying in a mobile apartment. Especially when the kids stay in and play video games instead of exploring the outdoors with the parents.

      There needs to just be a MORR stick for dip stick measuring gas tanks. Matt seems to be the killer of fuel gauges.

      When Matt was looking at the tubing for the drive shaft I remember quite a few that were torn apart from torque. Is there a logical reason drive shaft tubing doesn’t have thicker walls? Unless they want it to be the weakest link?

    Matt, you guys are talented and have a great channel to watch. I'd love to keep seeing you guys doing your thing and helping folks out, but you won't be able to do that if you get hurt on the job. As a construction worker it really bothers me seeing lack of PPE, ESPECIALLY when grinding and cutting. All it can take is a slip of your hand to pinch that disc and shatter it, and without a guard on the grinder and face shield/safety glasses on your face it can be absolutely devastating. Many major arteries and veins run through the area the cutting disc is under. Considering most of these locations are pretty far out there it's really not worth the risk of serious/fatal injury without professional medical attention nearby. Stay safe Matt and the crew!

    For the hammer haters: I sure understand why Matt uses an Estwing!! Roofer for years: framing hammers have a different feel and balance, and the claw is a versatile feature

      NGL I have one specific claw hammer I reach for first when doing mechanic work that doesn't require a sledge, has a well worn leather handle is why I started but now I'm used to the feel

    wow, you're in my old backyard. they changed the name to "Rowher Flat O.H.V. Area" many years ago, but locals like me called it by its original given name of "Texas Canyon" I grew up about 3.5 miles from there and have rode, drove, or wheeled pretty much every trail from Bouquet Canyon to Sierra Hwy and Sierra Pelona to Vasquez Canyon, I moved away 20 years ago and to this day my two sons say that was their favorite place to live, loved seeing it again, thanks for posting it

      But really, anyone with a portable welder could have done that repair.... or.... anyone with a standard heavy duty wrecker could have towed it out.....or..... anyone with a 4x4 with low range could have pulled it out.

    50 years ago I drove M35 "Deuce and a half" trucks in the Army. They had multifuel engines, and 5 speed transmissions. Because in previous iterations drivers dumping the clutch had broken or twisted driveshafts, there was a hydraulic "torus member" in addition to the clutch to reduce the shock. Fun to drive.

      I have some seat time in those, including to Ft. Carson and back at 45mph (two days each way). Interesting we drove there on unleaded and back on JP4 that was in our 5-ton fuel truck leftover from the FTX we were on. Those are truly multi-fuel!

      A while back I was training a new driver for the trucking company I worked for. This guy was a few months out of the Army, and said he had been a motor pool driver. No matter what I told him, he couldn't let out the clutch smoothly enough to get the rig rolling (standard 18-wheeler.) When I asked him if he'd ever driven a manual shift before, he said all the time, but in the Army you just side-stepped the clutch and gunned it!🤣

      Your comment brought back long ago memory. One of my fellows in green said that he could pull the front wheels off the ground, with 5ton. Bets were placed, a truck was obtained from the motor pool. At a remote location, we watched as he put in low range, 3rd gear ( I think, it's been a while) revved it up and dumped the clutch. As you say, a twisted drives haft was the result!

    I just love these stories and adventures! Living it vicariously through TH-cam, and when I say it like that.. it sounds kind of lame.. but, it is a nice way to wind down the day. I get to see some beautiful country, hear some stories, maybe learn something about off-roading & recovery.. stupid stuff not to do, smart ways to get out of sketchy situations…. I know I’m not alone in this , as there are nearly 500K folks enjoying it too!

    I've done some ill-advised things in my life, but driving an unknown vehicle that far, knowing it's got an "iffy" transmission is not one of those things. The Banana comes off the trailer and the Spyder goes on.
    Also, I worked in 2 different driveline shops in California (southern), so you know I've seen some things. I once replaced a tube on a 1710, which is a big rig driveshaft, that came into the shop in two pieces. One of the drivers had locked up on it, and their mechanics did a beside the road replacement of that puppy. Pretty danged impressive on the part of those guys.

    Really is amazing that they can "make" a drive shaft with a new piece of steel pipe in two hours and limp it on the road. It takes me that long to fix a pvc plumbing break. They're doing a level 10 (1 to 10 scale) repair in the time it takes me to make a level 1 repair!

    I’m watching this and repeatedly saying, aloud, “wow…wow….WOW”. To attempt this degree of REBUILDING on the trail is Absolutely Ridiculous!! “Hey, let me get these buggered up screws out and then let’s custom build a driveshaft on a 25* Rocky Mountain side and have it be as precise as we could do it in the shop but we’ll use a hand held vise and a battery powered cutoff tool, yeah, that’ll be easy…only take an hour or so…”
    You guys are absolutely phenomenal!!! Fun to watch!!

    This is so cool! My mom and nephew actually took pictures of that truck as it was driving down the street from us immediately after this recovery. This trail is 4 miles from my house! Wish I would have seen as I would have stopped and said hi! Great trail repair!

    Interesting story about Matt's first car. When I was a junior in High School auto shop, shop teacher had one of those Spyder Corvairs. My project was to remove and rebuild the engine with the help of another student. I had never seen a Corvair before. But we did it and received a trophy for "Most Outstanding Auto Shop Student for 1966-67".

    Corvairs were always known as GM's road oilers. The standing joke was that the county bought a fleet of them just to keep the county roads oiled so as to keep the dust down. In second place was Jeep's 1965 Gladiator pick up trucks with the 230 cu overhead cam inline 6 motor. I owned one in 1971. Even put a new short block motor in it thinking I could cure the vital fluid hemorrhaging. Even double checked all mating surfaces and gaskets. Torqued everything to specs. Within five months it started leaking from every seam all over again. Traded it for a new Yamaha XS 650 motorcycle still in the factory crate. The new owner of my Jeep put a Ford 390 motor in it. Good luck with that with the factory drive train that came with a 3 speed on the column. Never knew how long it took him to twist all the axles off.

    Another great recovery for the Off Road Wreck Team and Matt leading the endeavor. TT did his stick welding and he gets an ATA boy right now. Now TT can go back to the shop and make some shakes on drill press. The one other thing he has mastered.
    The customer offered other rescue outfits this job and they all walked, some ran, away. Sensational efforts by all of the team members.
    Now a little deeper into California for the Corvair shopping trip and money was on Matt taking home another Corvair. Everyone who bet on the Corvair wins as Matt takes another one home. We do know he will keep buying Corvairs until he has them all.
    Totally deserving Matt.

    Very nice job on that driveshaft you fellas. I drove a 5500 Dodge for a few years pulling a trailer. I found going down very steep hills, that the engine and exhaust brake, while in its lowest gear, didn't help at all. It was still too fast, so I would just put it in neutral, then I was alright. Thanks for this video.

      BTW, I'm an old truck driver and have driven many miles using only the odometer for a fuel gauge. That said, I was highway miles that were consistent, off road fuel mileage will be anyone's guess so you can't use the odometer for that. Back to my childhood on a farm tractor that never had a gauge, you just took the cap off and looked in the tank. But now I'm telling my age. LOL!

    Matt, love that you are a fan of Corvairs. Corvairs are actually the only Chevy I have ever owned. I have had quite a few over the years. I even had a '64 Turbo engine in a '61 VW Sedan... I just sold the last of my Corvair parts last year, a set of Halibrand magnesium kidney bean wheels, complete with knock offs! Have fun restoring your Spyder!!

    I tested my rig and it did great 👍 I’m running a hummer and a small stand in off road trailer that I home built. What a waste of money this rig is. I got more room, mine don’t break, I don’t get stuck, I only spent 20k all together, mine comes with a boat and a bike. I only have a few things left too make a it truly a tank set up and that is engine and trans swap and a nice solar package. I might start building rigs for other people because it seems some builders are not building with their brain, their building with making money in mind.

    OMG, my first car was a Corvair Monza, four speed, metallic blue. I expect your Corvair was a pretty, dark metallic blue at one time. That was in 1966 and I was 19…. Seeing that Corvair brings back memories…..57 years ago……

    Coating the body with undercoating adds a LOT OF WEIGHT. I was at a customers body shop. Next door, Rhino was coating an entire truck with that stuff. The body man said the weight would make the truck top heavy. Wouldn't get scratched too much when it rolled over though, he said with a smile.

    The front wheels almost came off the ground with the rocking of that rig. It was way too top heavy and too light of a truck. Not many people know about phasing drive shafts, and to get one done in the field. Well done Tom.

    Matt, My first car was also a 1963 Corvair coupe... 110HP, and I was a 14yo. It had no front body work as the body shop had cut off the entire front clip (front fenders, wheel wells, and fascia) to graft onto a '63 Spyder that had been hit. Trunk floor had been cut out as well so it looked like a scoop shovel! The front suspension was all there along with the fuel tank (my dad drove it home from the body shop). I parted it out and swapped the motor and trans into a 1964 Coupe that I bought at 16. Was my first car that I drove to school too. You bring back good memories for me with all of your Corvair work!

    You’re a brave man, publicly posting a video of working in CA. You should post the video of when the CA state gov’t fines you for using your Utah vehicles in their state, and then sends you a tax bill for your CA income. 😂😂
    I dissolved my CA-based business in Oct. 2020 and moved out of that state permanently in Nov. 2020. They have sent me a tax letter saying my non-existent business in a state I don’t live in owes them taxes every year since. And yes, my business paid its 2020 taxes.🤦🏻‍♂️

    I used to work in a shop that worked on nothing but Corvairs and VW Bugs. A guy who rented the upstairs of my parents house had the world's fastest Corvair. Spent a lot of time in and under those cars. For the most part they were fairly easy to fix. Don't see too many of them these days though.

      Wish you were around when I had my '60 Corvair which was a lemon from the gitgo. It was broken down by the side of the road more often than I drove it. ☹☹😵

      @MaryB-ps8lg yeah some did have issues. And they were not the best vehicles for certain areas either. Being air cooled didn't help in hot climates. Mountains were hard on them too. Going down hill wasn't a problem but going up could be, and if you went high enough you would have change carb adjustments. Wet areas were rough on the bodies and undercarriage. Funny the issues were the same with the VW's as well.

    That's Rowher Flat OHV in Angeles National Forest. It's a nice beginner/intermediate trail for any 4x4 vehicle. You don't need lockers. Most of the main trail is fire road and steep climbs ranging from 25 to 35 degree climbs. Depending on your line it can get moderately flexy or very flexy and technical. There are various off-shoots and play areas that are more challenging with steeper climbs, loose ground and may require lockers depending on the line.

      Im a big MORR fan but this wasnt anything special really. They drove all the way to Cali just to repair a drive shaft? I would have figured the guys there woiulda taken the old one out and went to town to get a new one or one built.

    OBTEW: The gas tank of the Corvair was the firewall between the driver and the front trunk. "Unsafe at any speed" was a good statement. It's basically in your lap in case of a front-end collision.

    Anybody else notice the rear suspension of “blue steel”? Seems like it could use some overload springs or air bags
