    To me, indian ink is the best when it comes to being waterproof. You can dilute it and when it dries, it's still good for watercolor ! Also very cute illustration !

      Fair warning, though, India Ink will much up a fountain pen real quick. Best kept for dippies.

      You can use India inkto refill your “disposable” Pigma Microns when they’re empty and the nib is still good too (just pull nib with tweezers and drip the ink in with a syringe”…. Cheap refill….and it’s waterproof!

    If you enjoy the writing experience of a glass pen but don’t like the mono-thickness I recommend Kakimori dip pens! It’s more pricier than a glass pen but personally I use it more because I get so stressed out using the glass pen

    For the watercolor smudging the ink look up archival ink (it’s what’s inside of microns) it’s water soluble until it dries and then it’s waterproof, India ink and calligraphy inks work well for that

    • @NoelleFerne
      @NoelleFerne 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Alcohol-based ink. Archival only counts for lightfastness and pigment, not how waterproof it is.

    Another thing that’s fun with dip pens is that you can mix the ink with water or other inks to your desired shade and customize your lineart color

    It is soooo satisfying to watch an artist use a glass dip pen! I could completely see somebody using a glass dip pen to write a children's book! The consistent lines would look really nice especially for the lettering! Ooh or even a graphic novel! Now I want one and the most "artistic" I get is when using a coloring book :) Great video, Kasey!

    Highly recommend Windsor and newton black ink, I use it all the time and it really only needs a few minutes to dry. The only problem I’ve had with it is that I may have to go over it again because the watercolors I use sometime cover it a little. A lot of people also will do watercolor first and then ink to make sure nothing bleeds

      Sumi ink is also a good option for more affordable waterproof ink, it’s often used for manga

    • @Littlewings1211
      @Littlewings1211 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pierce_alien9842I was actually shocked at how affordable Sumi ink is. My Mam is learning to do the (Chinese? Japanese?) Eastern style painting so for mother's day my sister and I got her a traditional set with brushes, ink sticks/stone and a bunch of little bits but because she's a beginner we also got her a big bottle of Sumi ink and a stack of cheaper rice paper to practice with. I was thinking it would be far more expensive because little bottles of calligraphy/drawing inks etc are quite expensive for the size, but this big bottle was about £8ish.

    Heya Kasey, you need to plan ahead for watercolors over ink! I always waited a full day or over night I never had luck waiting just hours! I mostly use Carbon Platinum Ink and it is waterproof but depending on the pen used it can take a while to dry! I do enjoy your art style and videos. Thanks Again!

    Oooh I LOVE dip pens 😍 for waterproof (and lovely colors) inks I’d go with Kakimori. Also, their brass dip nib is heavenly ❤❤❤ My second choice for waterproof ink is Roher & Klingner’s Sketch Inks. My on the go fountain pen and cartridge option is a Platinum Preppy or Prefounte and their carbon ink. But the Kakimori brass and steel nibs are now my most often used inking tools when I’m at home 100000% worth the money ❤❤❤❤

    I have a dip pen that enchanted me back when Wish shipped to me in Alaska. I love its look, but no matter how long I dip it or at what angle, it doesn't really soak the ink up for some reason. It's still a gorgeous instrument though!

      Metal dip nibs usually have a factory coating to protect them while shipping, you can remove it by lightly scrubbing it down with windex or dish soap and a small brush!

    Hi Kasey! I own dip pens and a glass pen but don’t use it for much except swatching my fountain pen inks. My glass pen has a swirled nib. So if I turn it regularly while writing the ink just keeps on flowing. It is really amazing how long one dip can go. If you are having issues with dry time, you could use a heat tool or hair dryer on low, I bet. I hope to see more of your glass dip adventures. Thanks for posting this video!

    There is also a glass dip pen with a more cylinder type nib it holds.... 3 times as much ink as the tear drop style. I use the bombay india inks they're very waterproof but ya you need to let the ink dry awhile compared to a traditional pen.

    Confession: I saw the thumbnail/title of this video and my brain played me a kind of reel of Kasey flashbacks to all the times that she's broken the tip of a coloured pencil or used it with a lot of pressure (that may be just a "me thing" but it hurts my heart 😂) and all the times she snapped crayons in her videos and I just winced 😂 Jk!
    I remember being so so so careful and delicate when I first got mine and being terrified of it....until I dropped it and it was absolutely fine so I knew they are a bit more sturdy than you expect! 😂😂

    I'd been curious about glass pens, and I always enjoy your process of experimentation in your reviews of art supplies. (That's actually how I found your channel a long time ago, so many brands of erasers tested and compared.) Thanks for all your great art and I appreciate your curiosity.
    speaking of inks though, I been experimenting with some metal dip pens lately since they're cheap, and my favorite of the inks I've been playing with is "Sumi Ink" - meant for calligraphy with brushes and dip pens. The Sumi Ink comes in a large 180ml pourable bottle, and I was told to add water to it until I have a consistency that I like. So I have an old ink bottle i've been measuring my water+ink mixture in, I have a large reserve to experiment and play around with too, and can mix my ink till it's the consistency I want for my dip pen. Thought I'd letcha know since I thought you may like the idea having a large reserve of ink to mix and tailor to your needs.
    Warning though, the sumi ink is a bit stinky, and smudges with water.

      @KaseyTheGolden  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    To be fair, the glass pen is more for writing than illustration. You were right that it's not really fair to compare it to the other pens. I was able to write with one here in Thailand recently and I loved it. I just didn't love the hefty price tag when I have seen these pens go for MUCH less. They wanted 1200-1800 baht (33 - 50 dollars) for a pen set which included some ink, but not much, and a matching glass pen rest.
    As a writer, I want to find something like this because a fountain pen is very messy. This glass pen is easy to clean in some water, then using a tissue to wipe off the end. Super easy. Super practical. Very enjoyable experience. I just wish they weren't feminine looking. A more masculine looking pen would be great to see.

    I didn't know Jacques Herbin made glass dip pens... though I did know they make inks. I've heard some mangaka's use dip pens for line work because of the consistency and sharpness that are achievable. I haven't gotten a glass one yet, but I do have a few different dip pens and quite a few nibs, including some metal ones by kakimori that imitate a glass nib. There are a few removable glass nibs out there, but they're a lot fewer than full glass dip pens.

    For inks, would recommend Kuretake waterproof manga ink (the one in the lighter gray container, not the one in black container). Have used it multiple time with watercolor and it does not smudge (but do NOT use with alcohol markers because alcohol WILL smudge the inks into an absolute mess). It works super nicely with G-nibs but would expect it to also work well with glass nib, only thing is it dries surprisingly fast so make sure to always have container capped when not dipping & if draw really slow ink might dry on pen. Have also heard good think things about Deleter ink 3 but have no personal experience with it, supposed to be similar to one that mentioned above where reliable waterproof but will make a mess if comes into contact with alcohol. (Usually dip pen inks that are waterproof react to alcohol & the ones that are alcohol proof react to water. The ones that say they resist both don't resist anywhere near as reliably unless they are a lot more expensive, such as Platinum Carbon Ink)

    • @kittensteaparty
      @kittensteaparty 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Other ink that have experience with is speedball ink but would not recommend. It smudges slightly & the ink is a lot less viscous so has a tendency to drip & make a mess.
