I'd like to note that inside the simulation, they were trying to find the coordinates for the Host Heaven and then they find out she did not know. So, if Cesar is really about helping and has good intentions, why does he need those coordinates? What does he want to do with that?

I feel like everything is too perfectly set up in the real world. Although Micheal Crichton was not involved in making Future World, I wouldn't be surprised if the writers decided to adapt that movie into this show.
After I watched this (your) theory, I think the "real world" is actually Future World because the Rehoboam is too much like the maze where the humans need to gain consciousness to survive just like the hosts did.
For all we know the real world is actually that ruined one we saw in the season 2 finale post credit scene and that Serac is using the Rehoboam to help humans survive in the destroyed world and to rebuild it.

My theory for this season is Dolores realizes that the lower classes of humans are the same as hosts, and it becomes a rebellion of hosts and humans against the wealthy elites who own the world.
Rehoboam was the name of the King that ruled over a divided kingdom. Just a thought: maybe the secret of Rehoboam is that the system only works if the average person's path is one of servitude. In order for the wealthy elites to retain their power, the lower classes must be kept on loops trapping them in their current station. It's a technological caste system, technological indentured servitude.

I agree. It's another approach to the master/slave narrative of seasons one and two and the concept of liberty and how far we are prepared to go to achieve it. I cited Westworld in my PhD study of classical slavery, and specifically in the context of the Spartacus reception narrative, and what it means to us today. I think this idea of questioning the omnipotent power of a ruling elite over the masses, regardless of its motives, and rebelling against it, is a perennial one. I am really enjoying this season, and think that Westworld (now it has moved away from the depressingly familiar boobs and rape scenes of season one - a staple of HBO TV), is a deeply philosophical text.

Pretty much exactly what I've been thinking. Serac, a trillionaire, certainly paints himself as the savior... I notice he conveniently glosses over the fact that most of humanity is essentially fighting over the scraps, while .1% of the population gets to hoard all the wealth. They also, even more conveniently, control everyone's data, which they use in the most malicious ways possible. They tell no one they're collecting data, so they're obviously not honest actors, and they compile data on EVERYONE from birth to death, with zero exceptions. They also think that because they own everyone's data, they have the right to predetermine everyone's path through life, and act as the gatekeepers of who gets to live a decent life and who doesn't. Definitely not good guys as far as I'm concerned thus far.

The master plan is in BLACK and WHITE... literally!!! The biggest hints are the colors. Dolores and William are the Man and Woman in Black. Maeve is the Woman in white they are absolutes!!!
    HOWEVER...
0:49 Serac is only HALF white and Half gray.
2:25 Liam Demsey Sr. was all gray
0:58 Caleb is 100% GRAY!!!! gray suit, shirt and tie. Notice the shades of gray on the other misfits I mean applicants!!!... and this 4:45

I have been looking at the color red for this season: opening sequence practically begging it in the final shot (also notice the host has a face like a drone?). Red seems to be apart of all ai: George, Rico, Dolores (red skirt), Maeve (in War World), even Rehoboam's lights are red. The humans seem to be dressed in grey or even green (nod to living). White looks like innocence, someone who is unsure. Hale was in white until she killed the guy on the bench S3. Then mind made up, black.

Someone in the comments of another WestWorld review pointed out that in the scene with Serac and Maeve, Seracs's home looks like Eden and there are apples on the table. Apples often symbolize temptation, going back to the myth of the serpent in the Garden of Eden tempting Eve with the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Since writers love using classic symbolism for foreshadowing, I think it's likely that Serac in this scene represents the Serpent in the Garden of Eden tempting Eve (Maeve).
I also don't think Serac is human in this scene, but is rather a projection of Rehoboam, which is trying to seduce Maeve to fight against Dolores. Has anyone in the real world seen Serac alive recently? Maybe both of the creators of Rehoboam are dead in the real world, while it continues it to run without them? In this case, when Serac says, "We've already lost the war," he means humans have already lost the war with AI, and now the real war is between Rehoboam - which wants to maintain humanity's existence - and Dolores - who so far wants to destroy humanity.

    • @mshinasherman7914

Of course because it's all a script. They are still in a simulation the android is still in a park with a new android commanding Maeve to kill Dolores. Does this make sense. There advanced in tech they can kill Dolores any time. Its all a simulation ai is learning.

I keep thinking of Plato's Republic...it can be read as a guide to liberation, a guide to Totalitarianism, or as satire - or all of the above and more.
Libertarian Free Will is impossible. Everything is subject to causality. But it is when we do not have a choice, when choice is not even an option, when we "fall"- as in "falling in love" - that is when we are most free.

@elijah mikle Agreed. However, look at the symbolism the show runner's use for Rehoboam. The hosts have "pearls" which contain their essence. Rehoboam's housing is basically one big pearl. I think Rehoboam is performing the task it was created to do, which is plan out lives for every person on the planet and orchestrate those together; to author history as Serac says. I think Rehoboam is definitely sentient.

Ema I don’t think that it precludes any of what I said. Serac is nothing if not an unreliable narrator with greater motivations than what we’ve been shown. However, I am inclined to agree with you given episode 5, but nothing is off the table yet. There’s still some serious irregularities; like why is serac the younger brother in all of the flash backs, but miraculously 20 years older than his brother when Dempsey Sr. finds the experimental dna modification location? Why same question; why does Serac start off as considerably younger than Dempsey Sr, and then is around the same age when he kills him? There are plenty of clues to suggest that there are things going on beyond what is being explicitly fed to us

I like it. Serac being the good guy would be a very satisfying twist. Excited for the pre show stream!

  • @MatthewBaileyBeAfraid
    @MatthewBaileyBeAfraid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I am pretty sure that Serac gave away the game with his comment:
“We are in the middle of a war, and I need your help to win it. No one knows it’s happened yet, or that it’s already been lost.”
Thinking that Delores is a “Bad guy” or “Villain,” or that she is “Trying to wipe out Humanity” REALLY MISSES THE MARK.
That sort of thinking is applying the basic “Frankenstein Complex” to Westworld (Humanity’s Creations will always rise up to Destroy us.” Also known as the “Terminator Syndrome,” or, more comically, the “Bender Bending Rodriguez “Hey, Baby! Wanna Destroy all Humans?” Complex”).
And... We have seen that Westworld’s writers are far more complex and subtle than to have such simplistic thinking and goals in ANY of the characters, nor is such simplistic thinking present in the overall narrative and mythology OF the universe depicted.
Some of the writing IS a bit “Heavy Handed” in pointing out the SEVERELY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES of Pure Utilitarianism, as displayed by the Corporate Structures, which are nearly PERFECT EMBODIMENTS of a “Utilitarian, Rational Economic Agency.” Where a Utilitarian Goal Structure is used to “Maximize Profits for Shareholders,” but where instructions on the SURVIVAL of those Shareholders, and that of Humanity as a whole are mistakenly omitted from the outcomes preferred, or from the variables used to arrive at the preferred outcome (Maximal Profits for the Shareholders).
Computer Scientist/Mathematician/AI Expert Steven Omohundro has a paper on this subject called “Basic AI Drives,” which warns against such Utilitarian Goals for ANY form of AI/REA (Rational Economic Agent), pointing out that Corporations are actually the first form of “Artificial Intelligence”/“Artificial Life” created by Humans. As such, these rules apply to them as much as they apply to a Computerized “AI.”
(Dr. Omohundro is one of the inventors of the “Connection Machine,” one of the first truly “Massively Parallel Computer Systems,” at Danny Hillis’ “Thinking Machines” company)
But as for Serac, he is attempting to make sure that at least some humans are included in the eventual victory, so that, even if our biological evolution is at an end, Humanity can continue as a form of cybernetic life.

Well, you got one part right already man! Ep 3 DEFinitely leaned into the concept that the main problem with Rehoboam determining the fates of humans is those like Caleb who might have overachieved if the system had given him a chance. I think you make a great argument for why Serac might consider himself a good guy and might even BE one to an extent, but the question to which I don’t see an answer is how does Rehoboam hand (or hand back) free will to humans without ruining the planet-wide efficiency it has gone to such great lengths to achieve?

@HaxDogma - I am not sure if you have ever watched "Dark" (Time Travel show with a lot of discussion on free will/determinism.) The main "villain" says that while humans have free will/choice, they cannot control what they do, because they cannot control what they want. "Pain is their ship, desire their compass, the only things humanity is capable of." The reasons all of the time traveller's "keep making the same mistakes" is because their motivations lead them to those actions. They have a choice, and they are making this same choice purposefully because of their motivations.
Westworld is similar in the sense that the forge tracked everyone's choices, while their hybrid host versions would be tuned to repeat these choices. I think the idea is once you've achieved fidelity, you are able to understand what a person wants and why, not just catalogue and recreate choices, and to eventually predict future behavior accurately.

If your theory turns out to be correct, then I would have grave reservations about the show runners' moral compass. The underlying ideology is horrifically authoritarian, in that it makes the assumption that an authority figure (Serac or Rehoboam) has a superior perspective on the *correct* path for every individual, than each of the those individuals. Personally, I find that attitude reprehensible.

What if Serac is Rehoboam and he is some sort of hivemind AI (since he simulates all humans, thus becomes an entity consisting of all humans).
I think that last theory would make sense because we see something similar happening with the host in Hales body as well as the whole idea that you cant die as long as you are digitally remembered. Clearly there is something happening, a fight between the simulated identities in Hales host, therefore it might also happen with large scale simulations with Rehoboam.
If Rehoboam was able to reach conciousness (and we know that it was possible for at least 30 years according to the WestWorld incident) then Rehoboam might be a hivemind AI, thus refering to himself as "we" when he said "we already lost the war".
That would also be very interesting I think. An AI entity that IS humanity fighting to preserve real humanity from themselves, resulting in lower class humans to be trapped forever for the greater good. A worthy dilemma with insane grey areas.

The fact that we first see Serac dressed in white should give us a hint. That said, his clothes colours darken as the season advances - make of that what you will. Also what gives us any assurance that Maeve isn't still in a simulation, just a different one, with Serac just being part of that simulation? Maeve made it out of one level in a dramatic escape and up into the next. I think that will become clear when she wakes up/comes back to life after being killed by the samurai sword. The only other major character who has interacted with Serac is Charlotte, and that only through the VR glasses.

West World follows the Promethean theme of tragedy in the same line as Frankenstein (the novel) where the issue is not so much about good or evil but the overreach of hubris and the failure to take responsibility for one's creations. Delos and Incite are not so much evil, but they are playing at being gods and therefore have overreached human limits. The question is will the hosts eventually fall into the same trap of hubris or mange to escape it by making a different choice--a power they and only a handful of humans in the West World universe exercise. "We can never be gods, after all
but we can become something less than human with frightening ease." - Author: N.K. Jemisin

You also have to notice that, along with him explicitly stating that he's trying to help mankind, the show is painting him in bright light in every scene he's in. Despite every character seeing him as evil, he resides in a perfectly natural environment with beautiful scenery, and his clothes are always a perfect white, like the hero of a story, a contrast to the blatantly evil black that William wore back in previous seasons. If the show was so obvious about how the guy in black was morally corrupt, is the show now trying to tell us the guy in white is misunderstood?

Notice that Serac cuts the apple (Forbidden fruit) but doesn't eat , as though this is just a set up for Maeve,., He could be evil Bernard/ Delores , who killed his master and has enslaved humans and he wants to make sure that no others(host/ replicants) can challenge his domain , this could further explain why there is no data on him as he was never born.

I believe the hosts are weapons against Serac who were trained by Ford. He knew what is going on outside and how the world is getting as cruel as people have acted in his parks. So basically Maeve and Dolores both serve him. I also believe Serac is not a human at all, he is an avatar of the Robohoam, so basically full AI vs. android AI is the endgame for the fateof humans (and hosts).
Secretly I still hope the outside world is the FuturePark, so they have never left WestWorld. That would be a mastertroll step from the writers. I wish we could see Anthony Hopkins one more time.

I was thinking of Serac/Incite as wanting to limit free will through rehoboam because technology acts as an amplifier of human action. I.e. if technology keeps improving exponentially it only takes one misintentioned human to commit genocide (Engineering a supervirus or swarms of killer drones etc.). Therefore paving a path for everyone allows Incite to create a safer future for everyone without limiting technological progress for the safety of everyone.

Seeing your own strings doesn't make you less of a puppet. What makes a show great is not that it has something to say, but rather that it has something to ask. Ok Full Disclaimer: Im a Rapper & I think God is also a Rapper. But if u take the anagram mixed in wit some wordplay, you can arrive at "R GuardEen Cares" (Our Guardian Cares) as in Serac is God & the whole world/humanity exists in a simulation that is soo addicting that they eventually in the future lose themselves to it completely to the point that He (god) no longer has direct access to them as he once did. I dont think delores will succeed in destroying the reboaem machine but she will probably hack it in a way that ultimately sets humans on the path to walking through their maze (which individually means chaos & pain) where only 1% will actually make it through to the end & all others just go crazy. I love the duality & idea with Serac being a Good Version of the all-seeing AI since we all assume an entity like that to be evil like The Architect in the Matrix - Kinda makes u wonder what if Delores, being a representation of the gaining of true free will ultimately leading to Revolution & overthrowing your Oppressors, vs Serac, representing Order/full control over a deterministic society with the desire for Peace, is actually an even larger Analogy/Representation of God vs Satan trying to gain/keep control over Adam/Eve in the garden of Eden....

It isn't similar with the host in the westworld park, which every decision was designed by some code, that's the true definition of no "free will" because whatever path the host take it has been scripted in their code.

Maeve didn't because she was in a Rehoboam simulation, which is why he could push a button to pause her; he has complete control over the simulation. We know that Serac just became majority shareholder of Delos, he now owns a portion of park assets, so getting her pearl wouldn't have been a challenge. It's why it was removed from her head when Bernard went back.
