I am new to your TH-cam videos. I've been a quilter for 37 years but always enjoy learning new techniques for old things. I think you're an excellent teacher. And I'm sure I will continue to enjoy your videos!
I can't tell you how many videos I have watched on finishing binding! This is the easiest no nonsense video I have seen! I LOVE you and your tutorials!!!! Thank you!!!!
I am a new quilter, and this is such a great simplistic explanation and video for binding a quilt! I am a huge fan of Jenny Doan's tutorials, and I happened to catch one where she had you on the show, and now I am a big fan of your tutorials as well! Between the two of you and my classroom instructor (Beatrice), I have learned so much, and purchased so many tools of the trade I can hardly wait to make more quilts! My sister and I also crochet, so we will be watching for your crochet tutorials as well! Thank you, and I will always be watching!
Vanessa, I have enjoyed watching you for about a year, Thank you! This is the BEST explanation and visual on binding that I have ever seen or heard. I am confident I can do it and I AM VERY INTERESTED in becoming a part of your new quilting/sewing community.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!! Vanessa, I have taken numerous quilting classes. I've watched and rewatched dozens of binding tutorials and tried all manner of binding tools and now watching yours (I've been watching your tutorial since I started quilting 4 years ago) now I see what I've been doing wrong and where I've been so confused. You draw the line to join the binding right top corner to bottom left and I've been doing it top left corner to bottom right corner. LOL !!!!! I can't believe the simplicity of it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your technique. I've learned so much from you and made so many of your projects. What an inspiration you are. I love quilting and sewing and enjoy your tutorials so much.
I am not a quilter, but a sewer. I love to make little quilted coasters and table runners but, that is all that I have done. I look forward to being part of your community and learning from you. I love your teaching method, easy to understand and to follow. Thank you!
I am a newbie so I am sooo looking forward to this new online quilting community and learning from you as well as all of the others that will be on here. Thank you so much!!!
Loved that little quilting tip. It came at the right time as I am making little quilts for upcoming Great Grand Babies. Thanks. Love your teaching style it's like being in a sewing room with a good friend.
That was a great introduction to your on line quilting community .... very excited about being part of the group. Great technique on binding and so glad that you demonstrated. Your teaching is empowering.
I am a Bag designer and have found many of your tutorials so valuable. I think you are an excellent teacher and find your style, tone, and pace to be so encouraging. Thanks so much.
This is a great tip and helps avoid all that frustration at the end of the project, thanks so much Vanessa! I really appreciate the wonderful job you do in sharing your teachings and your wonderful sparkly self and wish you even more success for the future - you certainly deserve it!
Thank you, thank you, Vanessa. I've been following you for about 6 months now. First was a little zippered purse (or cosmetic bag). Never would have dreamed of tackling that on my own. You've shown me the best and easiest way to do things. Go girl. We're with you.
I have always struggled with the binding. I can't wait to get started, it is the last thing I have to do on my son's t-shirt quilt. I would also like to say that i have enjoyed your You Tube tutorials for a while now and I think you have a great gift of speaking and making it very simply to follow. Keep up the fantastic work!!
scalloped edge binding and the covered (both sides fabric) Prarie pointed bonded edge. my grama used to add it after the quilt was done. the summer always ran out before I got to see her do this kind of binding edge. thank GOD for grandmother's who quilted and sewed. and I THANK HIM for you. your style is quick and steady and your venacular is so easy to understand and your voice is clear and precise. like you worked the bugs out. and tell us so we don't midnite sew with something that we have instead of waiting til mornin light, when we can git to the fabric notion store . keep it up. I will be waiting on pins and needles. haha
Hi Vanessa. I love love love how you teach. I have learned how to sew through your fantastic videos, and am so excited to make a quilt. You're teaching is so clear, precise, and understandable. I do believe I could learn anything from you. Thanks for putting this together and I look forward to our quilting community.
Only just came across your video's, you're a breath of fresh air! The end of binding has been problematic for me for 20+ years! Keep up the good work, will be sharing with my disabled students, I hope they'll be encouraged to complete more projects.
Love how Vanessa aka: Crafty Gemini shares her tips and techniques with others. As a true newbie to quilting I'm looking forward to learning this new adventure. Thanks Vanessa ❤️❤️❤️😄
Your new endeavor sounds like fun! Can't wait. I'm glad that others have complimented you on your teaching style and how good of a teacher you are. It's why I've always loved your channel so much, and why I stay with you. I've watched plenty of tutorials from others, even professionals and none of them are as easy to understand as you are. Thanks Vanessa!
Oh my goodness Vanessa, I just had a light bulb experience. Overlap by the width of your binding!!! Wow, no mystery, no high tech maths, just that easy. Wow, thank you. Now I know what I'm doing.
I am super new to sewing. My first sewing machine ever was a Christmas gift because my husband thought the sewing machine was a good deal. I have so enjoyed learning to sew. Your teaching style is wonderful. I know nothing and even I can follow along.
Not only are your videos easy to follow, I learned from subscribing and following you on Instagram that you are an animal lover (especially pitty) and believe in sustainability (growing your own vegetables). From knowing that personal side, I just think you are an overall fantastic person and I'm glad to support you in any way.
A "debutante" quilter living in SW France. Your quilt binding tutorial is fantastic. I used it on four quilts for my grandchildren and it was so simple to follow your instructions and worked perfectly. Merci beaucoup.
Love the video, and the binding technique is very helpful. It is one of the things I have struggled with. I'm excited for you for the Quilt Club, but hope you will continue to post free videos for those of us who are unable to join the QC. We learn a lot from your videos as well. Thanks for the many ideas and techniques you post! You're a great teacher!
Easy Peasy! Thank you so very much for all, through all the years and projects, and techniques, and here is to many more! Keep up the great work! Annette
WoooHoooo!! I'm so excited for this new community! So what I struggle with most is the quilting process itself. I do great with piecing things together, and I'm even pretty good at the binding. But I have a very beginner machine and no matter how much I pin and smooth and re pin all the layers together, when I quilt it all together, I get wrinkles and puckers all over the place. Even when doing something as small as a crib quilt. And as you can imagine, the bigger the blanket the more puckers and wrinkles get quilted in. Tips and tricks for preventing that without spending a fortune on a new machine would be amazing!! :)
PERFECT! Exactly what I needed for small area on bumper pads I made. I love your tutorials, you’re an incredible instructor & your enthusiasm is wonderful. Glad you won, you really deserve the recognition
This tutorial with your favorite binding tip just saved me from a great deal of frustration. You have made finishing the binding really easy. Thanks I really like all of your tutorials.
You are very valuable in yourself!.you, explain in a very good and understanding way!. And if I forget I go right back to your tutorials and watch it again!.. Thank you Vanessa you are awesome!
i watched your binding tutorial yesterday. You are the greatest Completed 3 bindinngs today. Can't wait to finsh up some more quilts.Keep up the great work. thanks so much
Hi Vanessa I am new to sewing my partner has bought me a little machine for Xmas but I have already started playing with it, I have always wanted to make quilts for my children I can't wait for the community to be up and running xx I think it is amazing what you are doing xx
I love this binding technique -- I was lucky enough to learn it when I first started quilting. My tip would be before you trim the excess make sure you stitched it correctly. When I was in my class there was a lady that didn't do it correctly and had to rebind. Great job as always Vanessa keep it up! As you said in " It's Sew Easy" you aren't jaded. Thanks for always explaining things so well!!
God bless you. I just finished my second quilt. I had help connecting the binding on the first one but this time I was on my own. Watched a few videos. I just couldn't do it right. Your tutorial was so easy it was like a light bulb went on. Thank you. Judy
Thanks for this great tip, Vanessa. I used this technique today when applying bias tape to a neckline and it worked beautifully. Much more professional looking than other joining techniques I have tried.
Great tip on binding! I want you to know how much I appreciate all your hard work. You are so encouraging for me. Lots of good luck as you start this new journey.
Fabulous job Vanessa!!. I am a Utube tutorial "freak" and I'm so happy you are joining the mix..I love your style, have been watching you for years.. I'm on the "vintage" side agewise with lots of sewing and quilting and K and C under my belt,,but it always makes me smile to find something fresh and new to try...Your simple and concise way of explaining and visuals is going to be so much fun to watch..Good Luck!! I'll be watching for sure..hugs, GrammaBabs
I'm so looking forward to your new online community! But I really want to thank you for this tutorial on joining the binding. Other tutorials just confused me more! I also want to thank you for the "pretty" sides together for making bags! That also is a winner!
Jan Riley Thanks, Jan. The online Quilt Club is now live! We launched in January 2015 and as of today have over 600 members! You can find more details here: craftygemini.com/crafty-gemini-quilt-club
Thank you. thank you for the binding tip! I am a new quilter and have only made one. I've made many things with binding and always hated doing it as I was never happy with the result. This will be so easy.
haha. I can't take credit for it. But I agree that whoever come up with it is a genius! I learned to do it this way years ago and used it ever since. :)
Thank you!! Love you videos!!! My biggest struggle with quilting is machine mitered corners and appliques. Can't wait for your new videos!!! Thanks again.
I love what you are doing and am excited to a part of a brand new community! I struggle the most with cutting. I have a very hard time cutting square, even pieces. I don't know if I'm pushing too much against my ruler with the rotary cutter or what, but things tend to shift. I think you have covered cutting in previous videos, but if you ever get the chance to do an updated one, I would definitely watch it!
Hey, Vanessa, you just solved my worst quilting nightmare. I am a "newbie" and found it so hard to grasp the placing of the fabric to be sewn and the direction to sew. I just watched your video and I can't believe that you made it look so simple. I watched other videos and either they didn't photograph it well or they assumed that the viewer knew more than they really did, but they really didn't help. Can't believe how simple it is for me now. Thank you so much for your simple instruction......great job!
Thanks for sharing. I haven't quilted or finished a quilt in years. You make it so seamless the way you show and tell. I am inspired to get back in the groove and finish projects I started. I actually got stuck at this point and now it seems like a piece of cake to finish the binding.
Well, that was amazing. How come no one has taught it so simply before? Thank you! I struggle with the quilting. I would love to see some quilt as you go techniques.
Hi Vanessa. Thank you for the great binding tip. My biggest quilting struggle happened on my last quilt. I made a baby quilt, The top consisted of three coordinating fabrics, I designed it so each fabric type ran diagonally across the quilt. My final quilting technique used to bind the sandwich was to sew large squares in-the-ditch. This would hide the stitches on the front, but create a decorative stitching on the solid back. Even though I pinned carefully, I still ended up with little puckers where the material shifted. Non-quilters would not even notice it, but to my critical eye - I was not pleased. So, gaining ideas and methods to ensure the back turning out as pretty as the front would be of benefit to me.
I'm excited about your new venture. I listened to your podcast yesterday and agree that your point of view (showing us the technique as if we were looking at it as we work) is the key to your understandable techniques. I have struggled with the very issue that you just showed us in this video. I've sewn binding strips on the diagonal with some facing up and some facing down (eek!) especially when using a solid where you can't tell which is the pretty side and I have even reversed the binding on quilts so it's twisted. I will try to follow your technique every time because I want to perfect this so it's not so frustrating. Another thing I struggle with is my long legs and short sewing tables. I just can't get into the perfect ergonomic position. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this tutorial. I did not know how to do this. I would normally just tuck one end into the other and stitch it done but it was usually more bulky than I would like. This technique is so easy! Will try this next time.
This is amazing. YOU are amazing. I love your tutorials!! I have been binding quilts using this method (from the Binding Gizmo), but have never really understood how or why it works, and have messed up many times. Your clear instructions were a Eureka moment for me. I will never have to struggle with this again. Thank you!
Thank you Vanessa for your many tutorials. They are so informative and your idea for a quilting community is an excellent one and I look forward to seeing you achieve this. I have made your oven mitten, the square foldover one, I gave two pairs of these for Christmas gifts in 2014. I don't consider myself a quilter as I haven't taken the plunge and actually made a quilt but I love watching the many videos that are around. One day soon . . . . I do have a very fundamental frustration though. I am left-handed but I use my right to cut with scissors and a rotary cutter, however I always seem to get a mental block when I am using my cutting mat and rulers to measure and cut fabric, I always seem to struggle to get the ruler in the right position for the measurements I need. It probably doesn't help that my A3 cutting mat has metric measurements and not inches, whereas my rulers are imperial. Any suggestions - anyone?
What a great tip for binding. I always finish mine off by hand so I can have the great feeling of knowing I'm finally done and it was all worth it....lol .... Although I would love to learn finishing binding by machine for those quicker projects. I watch how insightful and full of joy you are and I know whatever you come up with will be fantastic...Kudos to you and happy holidays to you & your family !!!
Enjoyed your tutorial. I have problems with mitered corners, matching fabrics, choosing batting, squaring up fabric, etc. most everything! Thanks for your tip today. I am adding you to my ipad screen.
Wahoo!! I can't wait til you get this community moving & grooving!! It sounds like so much fun! I'm looking forward to what you have in store for all of us! My biggest quilting struggle right now is machine binding! Gah!! I hand sew binding because I know it will sew up correctly. But when I machine bind, I find that I don't catch the backside. I know practice makes perfect, so I'm going to be working on mini quilts this winter to help with that! 😊
I am by no means an expert but have you tried machine sewing the binding to the back first, then fold over and sew the front down by machine? This is my preferred method. There's a ton of free tutorials online to show you how to do it right.
There's a lot to be said for finishing off your binding by hand - sitting on the sofa with half an ear on an old favourite audio book is my preferred way. Not only do you get the neatest result, but I think if you are giving the quilt as a present, it's always good to have the handmade touch. But there isn't any right or wrong way, as there are so many techniques, it boils down to what you're most comfortable with. I always go for starting with a small project on a new technique - mug rugs or table mats are the perfect size!
This is so exciting! I can't wait to see what you come up with! My biggest struggle when quilting is keeping the bonding strips lined up when I'm joining multiple pieces together. I'm not sure if the fabric shifts from the pins or maybe it's because my 1/4" foot had a guide on it. I have no idea but I end up having to redo it several times and it's frustrating.
About to start a non-quilt project that uses binding and was in need of info on technique and tips. Between Jenny Doan's binding tutorials for MSQC and yours, I feel a bit more confident. Thanks, Vanessa!
Thanks for the great (as usual) video tutorial. I wasn't aware that I should only overlap by the width of the binding strip... I look forward to the community in 2015.
Thank You! :) I actually did it on a small project right now. You are such a fantastic teacher! I was so terrified of it, bam take that you mean binding.
Oh also wanted to suggest maybe making some wall quilts. there are so many quilters out there doing big quilts which I seldom do any more but love wall quilts for holidays and sewing room.
Thank you for the wonderful quilt binding tip. This is something that is always hard for me to do. What I consider the first and most important step in making a quilt is choosing the fabric. I have a very hard time coordinating fabric for making a quilt so therefore I tend to not quilt. Is there an easy way to chose fabric? I know the colors that I would like but just can't seem to pull together colors that will look nice when put in a quilt. I am looking forward to your new venture and know it will be perfect!
TheCraftyGemini I have a big issue with selecting coordinating fabric for a project. I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. But I am so glad for your success. I know that if I am looking for any type of sewing info, this is my first and usually last stop. Thank you so much for sharing your passion with us.

Thanks for the quick binding tip! Just what I was looking for to finish up two quilts this weekend.
You make everything look so easy and inspire confidence
Awesome, I have been watching you for years and missed that . Thank you. Can't wait for your next project.
Thank you!
Glad to hear it! :)
You make sewing look so easy! Thank you. Your explanations are a wonderful help to me.
Vanessa, you are such a hard worker. I know your new online community will be a success because of it.
What a great tutorial soooo helpful xx
Thanks for the great binding tip, looking forward to seeing more sewing tips.
Any suggestions - anyone?
i love your tutorials they get me moving .can't wait for you to get started. going to use the binding tip right now thanks
Fantastic that you're starting an online community, Vanessa!
Such a great tutorial!!This is so much better and easier than how I have been joining my binding. Thanks so much!!
Thank you for showing this!
I have to check out your other videos and your club.
Enjoyed your tutorial. I have problems with mitered corners, matching fabrics, choosing batting, squaring up fabric, etc. most everything! Thanks for your tip today. I am adding you to my ipad screen.
First time doing a binding and joining I and your instructions were perfect. Looks wonderful. Thanks
Love your binding tip. I have been a sewer for over 10 years and also teach sewing but binding is still my nightmare. thank you so much for the hint.
Hi Vanessa, Thanks for the correct way to cut and close your binding. This is simple the way you explained it. Thanks. Ella in NC.

I can't find a you tube tutorial about machine sewing the binding to the back first and then fold over and sew the front. Can you help?
th-cam.com/video/wprg5vzkuGw/w-d-xo.html is Leah Day's take on attaching binding to the wrong side
Why have I never heard that binding tip before ?! Genius!
Great tip and you make it so simple. Love binding but have always dreaded the final joining ah but no more. Thanks
This is so exciting! I can't wait to see what you come up with! My biggest struggle when quilting is keeping the bonding strips lined up when I'm joining multiple pieces together. I'm not sure if the fabric shifts from the pins or maybe it's because my 1/4" foot had a guide on it. I have no idea but I end up having to redo it several times and it's frustrating.
great tip, you can teach an old dog some new tricks lol great idea for the online community, you have a lifelong fan in me !
I'm so happy you're doing so well in terms of your quilting videos! You have been so helpful to me. And I enjoy your teaching style. Th♥nk Y♥u!
I have never attempted quilting yet & look forward to the online cmty. Ty for your videos!
Love these video's. I did so many project's that were so easy to do after looking at the video. It's amazing .
Oh also wanted to suggest maybe making some wall quilts. there are so many quilters out there doing big quilts which I seldom do any more but love wall quilts for holidays and sewing room.
Thank you for making this easier for me! Plain as day, now!!!
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge. I still struggle with mitered corners. I have messed it up a few times and it is so disappointing.
Some day I hope to not need to keep referring back to this awesome video to get my binding ends turned the right way! Until then, THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Update; a year later and still using this video! Greatful for it's existence. 🤗
You’re welcome! Glad to help! 🙏🏽❤️
Thank you very much for this, it's something I have always struggled with. Looking forward to what's next.
I have always wondered how to bind a quilt. Thank you so very much for sharing. :)
TheCraftyGemini I have a big issue with selecting coordinating fabric for a project. I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. But I am so glad for your success. I know that if I am looking for any type of sewing info, this is my first and usually last stop. Thank you so much for sharing your passion with us.
I'm with you Sammie. I have the same problem. A class on how to coordinate color and fabric would be great!
