    Yes, an entire episode about human zoos would be great. I'm an inuk (Canadian Inuit.) There's a book at my parents' house about the story of an Inuit family being taken and put into a human zoo. I think it's the story of Abraham Ulrikab, but I'd have to look at the book again to be sure 😔

    I loved zoo tycoon as a kid too! Now I’m a wildlife conservationist! If you ever want some help figuring out which zoos actually take care of their animals, find out if they are Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Accredited. The Accreditation process is extremely thorough and holds zoos to the highest standard of animal welfare, conservation, and education with continued inspections. There’s a reason why your local elephant sanctuary is not AZA accredited but a zoo like the San Diego Zoo is. And I agree some captive breeding programs have not been successful, but here’s a list of some that have been if you’re interested in learning more: black footed ferrets, California condors, peregrine falcons, and golden lion tamarins. ❤

    Zookeeper here! I wanted to assure that conservation education and animal welfare truly are the top priorities of accredited zoos in the US. Zookeepers put their blood sweat and tears into providing the best care possible for their animals. Many of us aren’t paid a liveable wage - we don’t do it for the money but because it’s our passion. Often zoos work closely with conservation programs in the wild and some animal species now have sustainable wild populations thanks to zoos such as with the California Condors and Bald Eagles! Like many scientific fields, practices of the past were horrible and we are always learning from our mistakes. That’s why it’s important to do your research and support accredited zoos where the animals are the priority.

      Are these animals being rehabilitated?
      What are the size of the enclosures ?
      I think that’s more of the point. I understand rescue situations, but why can’t animals be rehabilitated instead of confining them ? Zoos profit off of animals solely for people to view and for their entertainment.

    • @linnielou5272
      @linnielou5272 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      @@jessienicol33 in some situations rehabilitation and release is not possible. In many cases, animals that are in zoos are there because they have been severely injured or orphaned in the wild and would otherwise not survive on their own if released. It’s also not fair to try to release adult animals when they have lived in captivity all their lives and don’t have the skills to live in the wild. It’s not simply releasing them, there are many factors to consider. Zoo animals associate people with providing food, enrichment, socialization. If you release them even with rehabilitation they will continue to seek out human interaction and will be more susceptible to poaching. People also have to remember that the “wild” isn’t truly wild anymore. Humanity has ventured to every possible area on earth and wild spaces are much smaller than people realize with very limited recourses. Zoos are working on improving their enclosure spaces. Gone are the days of jail-like cells and solid concrete enclosures. Now we know how much space certain species truly need and they are trying to make them as natural as possible so they have avenues to have natural behaviors. New enclosures are sometimes several acres large!

      @fruitbasket851 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      For example, the Oakland zoo in California is restocking the Sue Indian nation with bison every year, sending them I think it's like half of the babies that are born to re-introduced them into the wild because they're basically extinct over there. Oakland zoo also has a California condor program where they save so many of their lives because they're all being poisoned by eating contaminated carcasses. These accredited zoos are saving animals and species! They're so important everyone should all donate money to them and visit them regularly

    • @linnielou5272
      @linnielou5272 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Also wanted to add that the word “entertainment” keeps being thrown around when in reality that is not the case for accredited zoos. Accredited zoos are first and foremost educational. Studies have shown that people care more about animals when the actual animal is present as opposed to seeing pictures in a textbook. Seeing animals in person scientifically makes people more willing to learn about them and most importantly learn the importance of protecting them. For example, someone might tell you to put stickers on your window to prevent bird strike, but until you see the beautiful birds that it impacts the most you might not think it’s actually that important. People also don’t have opportunities to see animals in the wild unless they are very wealthy. Zoos make seeing those amazing animals accessible to everyone. If someone has never heard of a rhino or seen it why should they care if it goes extinct if it doesn’t directly impact them?
      All in all I wanted to remind everyone that we are on opposite sides of the same coin. We all want to see all these animals free in the wild and protected no matter if you are pro or anti zoo. Unfortunately that’s just not possible right now. Until that day arrives, accredited zoos will continue providing excellent care to their animals, supporting conservation efforts, and educating the public on why animals are so important.

    I used to have an indoor cat named Artemis. She was my little goddess...
    She broke out of our house so she could explore the wider world.
    I searched for her day after day after day until I finally gave up. I missed her so much that I thought I was going to have a full on nervous breakdown.
    After all, she'd been an indoor cat her entire life. She wasn't spayed and there were tons of feral cats roaming the streets. And, just a quick fyi, we're talking about feral cats in Detroit...so, not a safe place for a tame indoor cat to go roaming around in.
    Add to that the fact that we lived a block away from 2 high traffic roads (the house was on a corner) where people drove like they were trying to break the land speed record, and you can understand why I thought I'd never see her again.
    But then...a miracle.
    About a month after she snuck out of the house, I was out on the porch, putting little piles of dry cat food out for the weaker strays and, suddenly, there she was, 2 feet away from me, I couldn't believe my eyes.
    It was kind of funny because we did the whole romcom reunion thing, I said, "Artemis, is that really you?" and she meowed at me as if to say, "K, is that you?"
    I grabbed her and made a bee line to the bathroom where my husband was just minding his own business, trying to use the facilities.
    I literally kicked the door open and he looked super, uber peeved at me until he saw Artemis...lol
    She survived on the streets of Detroit without getting hit by a car, receiving a single injury or getting pregnant.
    I think that's pretty dang impressive...

    I worked at my local wildlife conservation zoo and it’s the only zoo that I personally know of, have been to and can confirm that it truly cares about the animals they care for and preserving their species in the wild. Some species only exist within zoos because they’ve been hunted into extinction in the wild and we had a few of these and the keepers put as much care and attention to detail as possible into making sure every need was met. Fun and entertainment included through what they called enrichment (activities meant to stimulate their natural instincts)

    I kinda wish the AZA accredited zoos versus road side zoos was a topic that was touched on.
    Another side note. I remember reading an article during 2020 that talked about how a lot of animals were becoming depressed because they didn't have people to interact with anymore. Social enrichment is huge for a lot of these animals. Of course they wouldn't need that enrichment if we left them where they belong in the first place buuut here we are 🙃
    I love zoos personally as long as they have the AZA accreditation.

    • @fruitbasket851

      100% agree! Zoos and accredited zoos are two completely different things they're just night and day difference! Also there's plenty of animals that can't be left alone in the wild because there is no wild left. I mean Russia China and Africa have just completely destroyed the habitats or hunted them literally to extinction. It's crazy! I hope they all do it India did which was whatever it took to clear a huge swath of land for their tigers who came back from the brink of extinction by just moving humans out of a large territory for them. A beautiful national reserve! India is my hero lol

But dont forget the key word i said earlier...ACCREDITED

      100%! And those accredited places need money because these animals are expensive, also here in the San Francisco Bay area where I live they put a lot of the money that they raise towards their sister and brother animals in the wild, who are being hunted to extinction out there so you know them not being in zoos is going to lead to them being wiped out. So I highly suggest people go to accredited

  • @nicolejames8242
    @nicolejames8242 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hello! Just wanted to toss it in here that there is an accreditation program in place called AZA (association of zoos & aquariums) which includes a lengthy and extensive evaluation of a zoo and aquarium by recognized experts. The organization is only accredited when it meets the established standards and best practices. Also, you have to take into consideration that we don’t only need to conserve and protect these animals for our own education but also for the preservation of the earth and it’s ecosystems. Unfortunately it takes human intervention to fix human intervention! Yes there is absolutely some unethical zoo’s out there, but there are also some amazing and crucial ones too! Just check for the AZA accreditation before you visit 😊

    Love this I use to volunteer at a wildlife refuge, we had animals that couldn't go back in the wild cause they were people's pets and the cruel things people do to them. I could tell you many dark stories about it.

    I grew up going to the Memphis zoo. I remember when we first got our pandas Yaya and Lele. Yaya passed away a few weeks ago and Lele was shipped back to China 2 weeks ago. Both pandas lived well beyond the usual life expectancy of a panda. Memphis zoo did a fantastic job caring for them, the baby they had, and regularly sending them to China for check ups.

    I highly recommend that if you decide to check out a zoo, make sure it is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (they have a list of all accredited zoos online)! Its basically a third party that reviews zoo policies, animal care, conservation efforts, etc. to ensure that animals are treated well and used as a means for education :)

      Oh you should see the zoos now, the accredited ones which are mostly what's out there nowadays. It's truly amazing! And animals in the wild Don't look so they don't look like anything because they're dead. They're completely wiped out and hunted to extinction… I don't know how to get some sort of international reserves with animals can be safe on another countries but that's what we gotta focus on
